feat(cursor): offer Edit from here via a fresh agent - #30609
Includes #30188 (ACP keep-context after Edit from here) so CommandPolicy and turn-start recovery are present; adds the null-native-ref → handoff path Cursor needs when rollback clears the agent.
Scope and approval
Problem: Built-in Cursor provider never offers Edit from here (#17093, Ideas #18708).
…er Edit from here
These tests reproduce pingdotgg#30136 and fail on main.
- After an ACP rollback, which starts a fresh, empty agent session, the next
turn resumes that session and sends only the new prompt, so the kept turn
never reaches the agent.
- When a resume after a rollback fails, the recovery handoff still carries the
rewound run, because prepareRecoveryHandoff keeps rolled_back runs.
The provider switch test adapter gains an opt-in rollback mode that mirrors the
real adapters: truncate in place, or answer with a new native session like ACP.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ACP agents cannot truncate their conversation, so rollback starts a fresh
agent session. The capability still claimed native rollback, so the next
turn resumed that empty session and sent only the new prompt. The resume
fallback summary also replayed rewound turns for every provider.
ACP now reports providerCanRollbackConversation: false, and rollback is
allowed for adapters that can reset their thread and consume handoffs.
Turn start takes the existing fresh-session recovery path when a
non-truncating provider's native session holds none of the kept turns,
and the recovery summary skips rolled-back runs.

A kept attempt recorded before attempts carried their native session id
counted as held by the current session, so rolling back past a newer turn
gave the fresh ACP session only the new prompt. The reset is now recognised
from attempts that did record a native id, and the check only runs for
providers that cannot truncate natively.
The recovery handoff also carries a fork's inherited conversation, which a
fresh native session lacks just as it lacks the local kept turns.

…attempts
A non-truncating provider's session is stale when the newest turn it accepted
was rolled back, or ran under another native id. The first signal needs no
native ids, so threads whose attempts predate them recover too. Inherited fork
history now counts as kept, so rewinding a fork to its baseline replays it.

The Cursor SDK cannot truncate conversation history. Mirror ACP by
replacing the live agent on rollback so the UI can rewind prompts.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Cursor gains Edit from here through a fresh agent, with conversation-context loss explicitly documented. The change is confined to requested rollback operations and retains existing checkpoint validation and runtime policy.

Cursor now supports thread rollback by clearing its native agent and returning an empty snapshot when no turn is active. Orchestration can use handoff summaries and recover kept conversation history when a provider session lacks it.
Cursor advertises thread rollback and rollback snapshots. ACP reports that it cannot roll back a conversation. Orchestration permits rollback when a provider can consume handoff summaries, even if it cannot roll back its conversation.
When a turn is active, rollback fails. Otherwise, Cursor closes and clears the agent, resets delivery tracking, and returns an empty snapshot. Tests cover both outcomes. The documentation describes the fresh-agent handoff of kept conversation on the next turn.

Startup detects native sessions that lack kept turns and prepares recovery handoffs that exclude rolled-back runs. Integration tests cover fresh sessions, native truncation, forks, legacy attempts without native IDs, and resume failures.
Cursor’s kept-context handoff lacks a test for its actual delivery path. Add coverage or accept the bounded regression risk.

Thanks for this. One concern: after Edit from here, the fresh Cursor agent starts with no memory of the turns the thread kept. The updated cursor.md says so: "a new session that does not remember the conversation from before the checkpoint". So rewinding to the fifth prompt of ten leaves the agent knowing none of the first four, while the thread still shows them.
#30188 (open) fixes that for ACP agents, which have the same limitation. A provider that reports providerCanRollbackConversation: false can still roll back if it can reset its thread and accept a handoff. At the next turn, a session that holds none of the kept turns then gets the full-thread recovery handoff. That check skips providers that report true, so with this PR as written Cursor would never get the handoff, even after #30188 lands.
If this PR kept providerCanRollbackConversation: false (accurate, since the SDK can't truncate) and built on #30188, Cursor would get the kept turns with no Cursor-specific handoff code. The doc line about forgetting would no longer be needed. I've built that combination on a fork: Cursor's rollback clears the native agent, and the next turn creates one and hands it the kept turns (7b51038). It's covered in ProviderSwitch.integration.test.ts, but I haven't run it against a real Cursor agent.
@Entrpi You're right — thanks for spelling this out.
Keeping providerCanRollbackConversation: true was the wrong capability signal: the SDK still can't truncate, and it would opt Cursor out of the #30188 recovery handoff once that lands. Clearing nativeThreadRef and letting the next turn create + hand off the kept turns is the better shape (same as your 7b51038).
After Entrpi's review: report that Cursor cannot truncate, clear the
native thread on rollback, and hand the next ensureThread the kept turns
via the pingdotgg#30188 recovery path instead of creating an empty agent early.

pingdotgg#30188 reads checkpoint rollback capabilities on resume. The ThreadInUse
test session mock omitted providerSession and died before settling.

…or rollback
Cursor ensureThread mints a new row id for the fresh agent; the null-native
recovery path must check kept turns against the stored id, and Cursor adopts
that id when re-ensuring after rollback.

This Cursor-shaped scenario passes injectedHistory, so the test adapter accepts the handoff and the next prompt contains no inline history. Cursor has no injectHistory path and keeps providerCanRollbackConversation: false, so it must receive the kept turns through the inline prompt. Omit injectedHistory for this scenario and assert that capturedTurns contains the kept turns in the next prompt.
