fix(peer): advertise direct MagicDNS routes for automatic linking - #30110
Automatic linking between Linux and macOS on the same tailnet can fail when Tailscale Serve is off. Discovery advertises numeric HTTP addresses that the existing transport policy rejects, but omits the reachable HTTP MagicDNS address that the policy already accepts. Related to #26450.
Change
Advertise direct HTTP MagicDNS from both server and desktop discovery when Running Self status, a current local Self address, and the effective listener bind agree.
Preserve healthy HTTPS preference and completed Self discovery when optional HTTPS probing exceeds the shared deadline. Keep cached discovery nonblocking.
Cover explicit IPv6 and mapped-address binds, stopped or removed interfaces, and unset-host loopback listeners with Serve enabled.
Scope and approval
This is a focused repair of an existing discovery path, submitted under the obvious-bug exception. Both producers need the same correction so selecting a machine supplies an already accepted, usable origin. Production transport policy, descriptor identity, redirects, access, bearer fencing, wire contracts, and persisted links are unchanged.
This takes a producer-side approach to the issue also addressed by #26475. It does not permit raw CGNAT or arbitrary LAN HTTP, repair Tailscale Serve configuration, or change the link picker UI.
Verification
The initial producer regressions failed on the base. Added deadline, IPv6, and unset-host regressions also failed before their respective fixes. The final focused run passed 67 tests across DirectEndpoints, tailscaleEndpointProvider, DesktopServerExposure, tailscale, linkRequest, and PeerLinks.
vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip phases, GraphQL, ten affected-package typechecks, and 68 tests across seven adjacent files. A separate exact-head source review passed and closed all three earlier findings.
An isolated source server advertised its direct MagicDNS HTTP origin through an authenticated WebSocket server.getConfig request. A request through that advertised origin returned HTTP 200 with the expected environment identity. An unauthenticated WebSocket-ticket request returned HTTP 401. Installed desktop behavior, fresh automatic picker linking between two machines, and installed HTTPS preference have not been verified.

Walkthrough
The change parses Tailscale running state and IPv6 addresses, builds a direct HTTP MagicDNS URL when the listener and local Tailscale address qualify, and includes the URL in desktop and server endpoint results. Tests cover endpoint discovery and linking through the advertised hostname.

Tailscale status and URL eligibility packages/tailscale/src/tailscale.ts, packages/tailscale/src/tailscale.test.ts
TailscaleStatus now includes running state and IPv6 tailnet addresses. The URL builder returns a direct HTTP MagicDNS URL only when the status, name, bind host, and local addresses meet its checks.

Server and desktop endpoint resolution use the URL builder and include an eligible direct MagicDNS endpoint. Server resolution caches status and applies a three-second timeout to the HTTPS Serve probe. Tests cover matching addresses, bind hosts, and probe outcomes.
Peer-link tests exercise an advertised HTTP MagicDNS origin and reject a direct plain-HTTP numeric address. Client-runtime fixtures include the reported HTTP MagicDNS address in listed URLs.

Explanation
The title "fix(peer): advertise direct MagicDNS routes for automatic linking" matches the main change. The changeset makes the server and desktop discovery advertise a direct HTTP MagicDNS origin, which fixes automatic linking when Tailscale Serve is off. The title uses a conventional commit prefix and plain language. It does not cover the deadline handling or IPv6 bind coverage, which is expected for a title.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section states the failure and its context. The Change section lists the producer-side fixes. The Scope section cites an obvious-bug exception and explains why both producers need the same fix. The Verification section lists focused and repo-level checks, the observed results, and what remains unverified (installed desktop behavior, fresh picker linking between two machines, and installed HTTPS preference). Two gaps remain. The Problem section gives no concrete reproduction steps or environment beyond Linux and macOS on one tailnet. The description also does not clearly name the approval basis, since it relies on an exception rather than a linked triaged issue. The template also asks for the model and harness, and the description includes that line. The verification test counts in the description (67 tests, 68 tests) differ from the objectives summary (66 and 67). The description is mostly complete, so this check passes.

Move the bind-host eligibility matrix to the builder's test file.
This table exercises buildTailscaleDirectBaseUrl. It checks wildcard binds, IPv4-mapped forms, expanded IPv6, and BackendState handling. apps/server/src/environment/DirectEndpoints.test.ts (lines 421-471) repeats a similar matrix. packages/tailscale/src/tailscale.test.ts has no test for the builder. Its only changed assertion is running: false, so no test there parses BackendState: "Running".
Put the eligibility table in packages/tailscale/src/tailscale.test.ts. Add a Running parse case to the existing parse test there. In each call-site test, keep one case that proves the builder output reaches the endpoint list. The Tailscale HTTPS ordering check (lines 128-134) is specific to the desktop provider. Keep it here.
As per path instructions, **/*.test.* must follow docs/internals/testing.md: "Test at one layer: the lowest one that fails on main. Do not repeat the case in a wrapper test, at each call site."

Addressed the test-placement note in 8f60b76d7b5. The shared helper now owns the bind eligibility matrix, and the existing parser test covers Running, Stopped, and Unknown. Producer tests retain IPv6 propagation, HTTPS availability and ordering, and server cache/deadline behavior. Production files are unchanged.
The focused suite passed 67 tests, and vp run check:changed passed all steps with 68 adjacent tests. The earlier timeline click timeout cleared on one fresh full CI run. CI for this test-only follow-up is pending.
