fix(web): onboarding Codex card keeps a way back to ChatGPT after choosing the CLI - #30102
In onboarding ("Connect your agents"), clicking Use existing CLI on the Codex card saves setupMode: "existing" and swaps the card for a CLI-only row that offers just the terminal Install / Sign in. If the CLI is missing or signed out, there is no way back to Continue with ChatGPT, and reloading /welcome shows the same row. The ChatGPT card already has Use existing CLI as its way back, so this was a one-way door.
Reproduced on main at cefb544 with a fresh dev server (T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0): Codex CLI 0.163 signed out (empty CODEX_HOME) → /welcome → Continue → Use existing CLI → only Sign in; open and close the terminal, reload → same. With the binary path pointing at a missing file → only Install.
Change
While the chosen CLI is not ready (not authenticated, not checking, not ready — the same rule the original two-button card uses), the Codex CLI row also shows Continue with ChatGPT. It saves setupMode: "managed" and starts ChatGPT sign-in in one click, like the original button. The click intent lives in OnboardingCodexSetup, because switching modes remounts the card, and is handed down through the existing autoStart / onAutoStartConsumed props.
The button is hidden when a managed policy locks Codex setupMode (same rule as the existing "Connect another ChatGPT account" control) and disabled without providers:manage.
AgentCard gains an optional secondaryControl. Its row now wraps, so on narrow screens the two controls drop onto their own line instead of squeezing the text.
New browser test can switch Codex back to ChatGPT sign-in after choosing the existing CLI in WelcomeWizard.import.browser.test.tsx: fails on main (the signed-out Codex card must still offer ChatGPT sign-in), passes here. keeps the Codex ChatGPT fallback disabled without permission to manage providers (session with explicit permissions lacking providers:manage): button disabled, no sign-in starts; fails if the guard is removed. The file's other 5 tests pass. vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (2 packages), tests, react compiler all pass.
Real app, before = cefb544, after = 5228ab9, each from its own checkout on a fresh database created through the UI (T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0). Headless Chromium 156 (T3 preview, incognito), no device emulation, DPR 2, 100% font scaling. Wide = 1440×900 CSS viewport (exported 1280×800 by the tool), narrow = 390×844. Diff0 = ImageMagick compare -fuzz 0% (any changed pixel in magenta), DiffT = -fuzz 2%.
What else changed (beyond the new control): the status text rewraps around the extra button and the dialog re-centres to the new card height; the Ready badge on every agent row sits 1.5 CSS px lower because the controls container is now a flex row (R4: only those pixels differ at zero threshold).
Recorded script, same on both sides, from R1: t=3s click Sign in (terminal opens with codex login pre-typed, never run) → t=10s Close → t=13s reload /welcome → t=18s Continue → t=25s before: no ChatGPT control exists; after: click Continue with ChatGPT → t=30s the card has switched to the ChatGPT card with sign-in already started. ChatGPT OAuth cannot complete on the test VM, so the run stops at the waiting state.
End state as lossless settled stills (two frames 500 ms apart, identical). Before = the CLI-only card that remains on main (same capture as R1 1440 light); after = a fresh head database driven through R1, then one click on Continue with ChatGPT, captured once "Complete sign-in in your browser" showed.
Diff0 lights the Codex row (the intended state change), the Ready badge (1.5 px, above), and two capture-condition differences, not from this PR: the focus ring on Continue (focused in the before frame, blurred in the after frame) and the blurred sidebar thread's age. Changed pixels: 8761 at 0%, 5011 at 2%.
R4 · CLI chosen and ready (no ChatGPT control; regression check)
Each side: git worktree add --detach <dir> <sha>, vp install, then from inside it T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0 CODEX_HOME=<empty dir> vp run dev (R4: no CODEX_HOME override, VM's authenticated Codex). Pair with the logged pairingUrl in an incognito browser.
R1: /welcome → Continue → Codex Use existing CLI → reload /welcome → Continue; wait for "Not authenticated" + Sign in.
R2: as R1 on a fresh database, then Settings → Providers → Codex → Binary path = the same nonexistent path on both sides, Tab; reload /welcome → Continue.
Not verified: the policy-locked state (button hidden) and a session without providers:manage (button disabled) — both follow from the code but were not captured; first-party ChatGPT OAuth completion; desktop shell and native mobile (unaffected surfaces). The R3 recordings could not be attached here (MP4 hosting unavailable); the key frame above shows the end state.

… ChatGPT
After choosing "Use existing CLI" with a signed-out Codex CLI, the
onboarding card no longer offers "Continue with ChatGPT". This test
reproduces #30073 and fails until the way back exists.

…osing the CLI
Choosing "Use existing CLI" in onboarding swapped the Codex card for the
generic agent card, which only offered a terminal Install or Sign in. With
the CLI missing or signed out there was no way back to ChatGPT sign-in.
While the chosen CLI is not ready, the card now also offers "Continue with
ChatGPT". It switches the instance to managed setup and starts sign-in in
one click; the request is held in OnboardingCodexSetup because switching
remounts the ChatGPT card. It honours the managed-policy setupMode lock and
the providers:manage permission. AgentCard gains a generic optional
secondary control.

Remaining evidence for the tables in the description (same capture conditions; Diff0 = compare -fuzz 0%, DiffT = -fuzz 2%, changed pixels in magenta). Before = cefb544, after = 5228ab9.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Restores an explicit way to switch from unfinished CLI setup to the existing ChatGPT connection flow. Permission and policy checks constrain the action, and existing product defaults remain unchanged.

Walkthrough
The Codex onboarding card can offer ChatGPT sign-in when provider state and policy allow it. Selecting the option switches Codex to managed mode and starts authentication. The option is disabled when the session lacks provider-management permission.

Explanation
Issue #30073 requires a discoverable return to ChatGPT sign-in after the user selects the CLI path and CLI setup is unavailable or unfinished. OnboardingCodexSetup now renders Continue with ChatGPT when the provider is not authenticated, checking, or ready. The action changes the mode to managed and starts sign-in through autoStart. The control is hidden when policy locks setupMode and disabled without AuthProvidersManageScope. The added browser coverage also checks the missing-permission case. These changes satisfy the linked coding requirement.

This test uses a session without permissions. The legacy orchestration:operate scope therefore grants providers:manage, so the test cannot check the new disabled state. Add a case with explicit permissions that omit providers:manage. Assert that “Continue with ChatGPT” is disabled and cannot start authentication. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the “can switch Codex back to ChatGPT sign-in after choosing the existing
CLI” test to use a session with explicit permissions that omit providers:manage,
rather than relying on legacy scope behavior. Assert that “Continue with
ChatGPT” is disabled and that attempting to continue does not start
authentication.

@coderabbitai Added in 3e2b5d5: keeps the Codex ChatGPT fallback disabled without permission to manage providers uses a session with explicit permissions that omit providers:manage, and asserts the button is disabled, clicking it starts no sign-in, and the setup mode stays existing. It fails with the guard removed.

@juliusmarminge Thanks. The reported test covers the missing-permission case: the fallback stays disabled, sign-in does not start, and setupMode remains existing. The reported failure with the guard removed also shows that the test detects a permission-guard regression. This addresses the coverage gap I raised.

Learning: In apps/web/src/components/settings/CodexSetupSection.tsx, the existing-mode branches run before the canAuthenticate guard. The guarded fallback is a managed-account preparation state, including while a previous CLI snapshot remains visible during a mode change. It must not be interpreted as existing-CLI login guidance. ManagedCodexSetup mounts when the provider reports canAuthenticate: true.

# T3 Code
## Verifying
- Web browser tests are `*.browser.test.tsx` or `*.browser.test.ts` and render with `await using screen = await render(...)` from `apps/web/test/render.tsx`. `t3code/require-disposable-render` errors on the old patterns.
- Acquire what the test drives after mounting (fake timers it advances, spies it sets up after mounting) after the render, so it disposes before the unmount. Anything the first render reads comes before it.
- A helper that renders and then waits or clicks puts the screen in an `AsyncDisposableStack` and `move()`s it out only on success, so a failed wait still unmounts.
- `rerender` needs a fresh element on every call.
- No lifecycle hooks and no module-level mutable state. Shared mock state that `vi.mock` factories read is reset by a `setup()` call at the top of the test.
- `router` is on by default. Pass `router: false` only with a one-line comment saying why.
```tsx
it("saves on Enter", async () => {
const onSave = vi.fn();
using _now = vi.spyOn(Date, "now").mockReturnValue(0);
await using screen = await render(<TitleEditor onSave={onSave} />, { router: "/threads/1" });
await userEvent.type(screen.getByRole("textbox"), "Title{Enter}");
expect(onSave).toHaveBeenCalledWith("Title");
});
Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, AGENTS.md's Verifying section requires tests of meaningful logic or observable behavior. Do not recommend static-markup assertions, callback-wiring assertions, or tests that mirror the implementation. For React components such as apps/web/src/components/chat/AssistantCitationChip.tsx, mocked popover parts with content-only assertions do not verify opening, closing, source navigation, or highlighting.
