fix(acp): keep v1 assistant images and standard tool images - #30101
ACP assistant image chunks appear as [ACP image (image/png)], and standard ToolCallContent image blocks lose their bytes before the existing image renderer sees them. User uploads and supported vendor-specific rawOutput images already work.
Reproduction: a generic ACP v1 subprocess reports protocolVersion: 1, then emits agent_message_chunk text, image, text, image, text, followed by a completed tool call with two { type: "content", content: { type: "image", mimeType: "image/png", data: "..." } } blocks. Both assistant images should remain in the reply, and both tool images should appear when its result is expanded.
Change
Preserve bounded inline and base64 data-URI raster payloads through ACP parsing. For agents reporting protocolVersion: 1, persist assistant images through the existing user-upload storage path and preserve text/image order, including omitted or reused messageId. Unwrap standard tool content as a fallback when no rawOutput exists, so the existing tool-image reader can serve it.
Web and desktop reuse the existing attachment renderer, signed asset URLs, and image preview. Mobile already renders assistant attachments. Both timeline implementations keep the contiguous image-bearing final reply visible after settlement, rather than folding its earlier segments into "Worked for". Tools, reasoning, earlier progress, steer boundaries, and text-only folding retain their existing behavior.
Protocol boundary: v1 assistant images are fixed only when the initialize response reports version 1. V2 assistant handling is unchanged and not fixed. V1-shaped agents reporting version 2, including Antigravity, also keep base behavior. The compatibility layer's shape-based generation is private. Standard tool-result images are tested for both versions. The terminal segment's copy button still copies only that segment's text.
Scope and approval
Submitted under CONTRIBUTING.md's focused obvious-bug exception, without a prior triaged issue or maintainer approval. Raster bytes already arrive through the supported ACP content contract but become placeholders. The parser, adapter, extracted unchanged upload persistence, render path, fold handling, and tests address that one data-loss defect. The fold changes are necessary because segmenting the reply otherwise hides previously visible text. Maintainers decide whether this qualifies for the exception.
No Amp integration, downloads, history import, observation, settings, tool-title changes, dependencies, or new wire contracts. This does not undo #16652's removal of unserved tool bytes or add Markdown/HTML data-URI rendering.
Verification
GOMAXPROCS=2 vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/AcpAdapterV2.test.ts packages/provider-acp/src/server/runtimeModel.test.ts apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.logic.test.ts apps/mobile/src/lib/threadActivity.test.ts --maxWorkers 1: 282 passed. Covers persisted bytes, ordered segments, distinct attachment IDs, standard tool images in both versions, v2 authoritative text, and image/text-only fold controls with tool and steer boundaries. The image and fold regressions fail against their base implementations.
GOMAXPROCS=2 vp run check:changed cefb544af3c98224874419198c0359b652ca3c94 --concurrency 1: exit 0 in an isolated source-identical checkout. Format, lint, both Knip passes, server GraphQL, 26 uncached package typechecks including mobile, 299 tests, and 8 targeted React Compiler checks passed. The runner declined to cache the pass because other inputs changed; all 12 candidate source hashes and git status stayed identical. Full CI suites and builds were not run locally.
Independent read-only Claude Code, Claude Opus 5.5, high effort review found no correctness blocker. Base/candidate probes confirmed four v2 chunk/reasoning/upsert sequences produce identical assistant outputs; 139 web/mobile fold tests passed. The tracing-only follow-up was re-reviewed by the same reviewer, who also reran three adapter image regressions. Its separate server typecheck exceeded the reviewer Orb's memory; the source-identical Changed-Gate above passed all 26 typechecks in a larger Orb.
After the tracing-only follow-up, format and 143 adapter/runtimeModel tests passed locally, and the full Changed-Gate above passed again on the exact final source.
Real isolated Linux T3 stack, driven through native T3 preview_* tools, with the same generic ACP v1 subprocess fixture and two PNGs, not a live named vendor or paid model turn:
Base: user image works; assistant 0, tool 0, four placeholders. Fixed: collapsed default and reload show user 1 + assistant 2 and all text in order. Expanded shows all five images and no placeholders.
Five image previews opened and closed with Escape; reload passed. All five HTTP responses were 200 image/png, with exact source bytes: 401, 401, 8090, 401, 8090. The seven before/after session updates are identical after session-ID normalization, SHA256 42f38bc30c3ad41b8d376f1d6b796c21fbe9bf0a593aa582bf35b8c239711a22.
The turn and five previews ran on V4's ten web/server sources, byte-identical in V5. V5 added only the two mobile files. Default, expanded, and reload were then recaptured on the V5 checkout using that unchanged persisted reply, without a new provider turn. The final V6 follow-up only removes the ProviderHost wrapper's duplicate tracing span; image storage and UI sources are unchanged. No V6 UI execution is claimed.
Known limitation from code review: guest share pages still do not display assistant-image thumbnails. Their attachment URL map includes only user messages. This adjacent guest-rendering gap is not fixed here; assistant images were also unavailable there before this change.
Not exercised: native mobile runtime or build, packaged Electron, relay/tunnel paths, named live providers, or line-wrapped base64. T3 device access was explicitly disabled, so mobile verification is tests, typecheck, and code review only. No performance benchmark was run.

Summary
Attachment persistence and provider wiring apps/server/src/assets/ChatAttachments.ts, packages/provider-core/src/server/ProviderHost.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ProviderHostLive.ts, apps/server/src/ws.ts
A shared effect validates and stores attachments. ProviderHost exposes the operation, and the live provider supplies its configuration and filesystem services. The WebSocket module imports the shared implementation.
ACP image extraction and projection packages/provider-acp/src/server/runtimeModel.ts, packages/provider-acp/src/server/adapter.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/AcpAdapterV2.test.ts
The ACP runtime validates image content. For ACP v1, the adapter can persist assistant images and project them as attachments. Tool output unwraps content blocks, and tests cover image handling and message fidelity.
Image reply folding and display apps/mobile/src/lib/threadActivity.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/threadActivity.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.logic.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/TimelineAssistantRows.tsx
Mobile and web folding retain contiguous assistant messages when the sequence contains an image attachment. The web timeline renders attachments and supports image previews. Tests cover image and non-image replies, collapsed and expanded views, and steered turns.

Explanation
The title "fix(acp): keep v1 assistant images and standard tool images" matches the main change. The diff adds persistence for ACP v1 assistant images, keeps the image-bearing final reply visible after folding, and unwraps standard ToolCallContent images. The title follows the conventional commit format from the template. It names the protocol scope (v1) and both image paths, so a teammate scanning history can identify the primary change.

Use Effect.fnUntraced here. persistChatAttachments already owns the span.
persistChatAttachments in apps/server/src/assets/ChatAttachments.ts already runs inside Effect.fn("ws.assets.persistChatAttachments"). The wrapper adds ProviderHost.persistChatAttachments around that call, so each persistence call creates two nested spans for one operation. The resolveExtractedTextPath entry in the same object delegates the same way and uses Effect.fnUntraced with a comment that names the span owner. Use the same form here.
The effect-services guide says to use Effect.fnUntraced for helpers already covered by the same operation's span, and to avoid adding a second span for the same operation.

Update the persistChatAttachments wrapper in the provider host to use
Effect.fnUntraced, matching resolveExtractedTextPath, because the delegated
operation already owns its span. Preserve the existing service provisioning for
ServerConfig, FileSystem, and Path.
Delegate provider attachment persistence without opening a second span. The shared ChatAttachments operation retains its existing span and receives the same captured services.

The duplicate persistence-span comment is addressed in 5omeOtherGuy@8ff769f. ProviderHost now follows the neighboring Effect.fnUntraced delegation pattern; the shared persistence operation retains its existing span and all three captured services.
The exact follow-up passed a fresh check:changed run with 26 uncached typechecks, 299 tests and 8 React Compiler checks, plus 143 focused tests locally. The same independent Claude Code / Claude Opus 5.5 / high-effort reviewer re-reviewed the delta and found no blocker. CI for the new head is running.
The PR description now explicitly discloses the adjacent guest-share assistant-image limitation and keeps the original V4/V5 UI evidence labeled accurately. No guest-rendering feature or new inline-preview path was added. The current-producer evidence for the blob/data thumbnail finding is in #30101 (comment).
