feat(web): toggle task-list checkboxes in pull request comments - #29660
Task-list checkboxes in pull request comments can now be clicked. Bots such as Trunk ask you to tick a box to merge, and T3 Code showed those boxes read-only.
Clicking a box in Summary or Timeline saves the comment, shows the change at once, and rolls back with a toast on failure.
GitHub issue comments now report viewerCanUpdate, so maintainers can toggle boxes in others' comments, as on github.com. The edit button shows there too.
Verification
vp run check:changed passes. In a dev build, clicking boxes in both tabs updated a test comment on GitHub. GraphQL reports viewerCanUpdate: true on a Trunk comment.
GitHub comments from bots such as Trunk ask you to tick a box, but T3 Code
rendered those boxes read-only. Clicking one now rewrites the comment through
the existing comment update path, shows the new state at once, and rolls back
if the save fails.
GitHub issue comments now carry viewerCanUpdate as canEdit, so a maintainer can
toggle a box in a comment somebody else wrote, as on github.com.

Pull request comments now support task-list checkbox updates in the Summary and Timeline tabs. Checkbox offsets map to comment text, GitHub edit permissions gate saving, and task changes use optimistic updates with queued saves.
The activity query requests viewerCanUpdate for issue comments. The decoder maps that value to canEdit, and a test checks false and true values.
Task marker offsets and optimistic state apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestMarkdown.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/usePullRequestTaskToggle.ts, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/usePullRequestTaskToggle.browser.test.tsx
PullRequestMarkdown reports checkbox changes with offsets in the original text. The hook applies changes optimistically and queues saves in click order. Browser tests cover successful queued saves, failed saves, and host text updates.
Summary and Timeline comment updates apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestSummaryTab.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestTimelineTab.tsx
Both tabs connect task toggles to comment updates. Saving is disabled for review comments and review-verdict bodies. Timeline saving checks that the displayed text occurs in the original comment body.

[Bug]: Checkboxes in a pull request description can't be ticked #29487: The issue reports that task-list checkboxes in a pull request description cannot be ticked in the Summary tab. This PR enables task-list checkbox updates in Summary and Timeline comments, but the summaries do not establish that pull request descriptions are affected.
Concurrent comment updates may lose newer text, and some attachment-containing comments can be modified incorrectly when a task is clicked. These issues should be fixed before merging.

Explanation
The title "feat(web): toggle task-list checkboxes in pull request comments" matches the main change. The changeset adds clickable task-list checkboxes in PR comments (Summary and Timeline tabs), a usePullRequestTaskToggle hook, and viewerCanUpdate support for GitHub issue comments. It follows the conventional commit format the template suggests and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the problem (task-list checkboxes were read-only, so Bots such as Trunk could not be ticked to merge), the change (clickable checkboxes in Summary and Timeline with optimistic update and rollback on failure, plus viewerCanUpdate for issue comments), and a Verification section. It does not address the Scope and approval section, which the template requires to link a triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion. It also lacks before/after screenshots or a recording for this UI change, and the Verification section does not describe the rollback or sequential-save behavior that the tests cover.
Resolution
Add a Scope and approval section that links the triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion (with the approval comment). If no prior approval exists, explain why this change qualifies as a small, focused fix of an obvious bug. Add before/after screenshots of the checkboxes in the Summary and Timeline tabs, plus a short recording of the click and rollback behavior, since the change is interactive. Expand Verification to cover the failure rollback path and rapid-toggle ordering, and state what could not be checked, such as the other GitHub comment types.

Each save sends the whole comment body, so two quick toggles could land out of
order and the older body would overwrite the newer one.

Keep queued changes visible across intermediate refreshes.
If a user toggles A and B, the refresh after saving A can change body before B saves. Line 18 then hides the pending A+B body. If the user toggles C, the queued A+C snapshot overwrites B. Keep the latest pending body until the queue settles, and reconcile it with refreshed bodies. PullRequestSummaryTab.tsx saves and refreshes after each toggle. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the queued save flow in the pull-request task toggle hook so refreshes
between saves do not replace the latest pending body with a stale `body`. Apply
each toggle to the latest pending body, reconcile refreshed bodies without
losing queued changes, and retain that body until the save queue settles.

Coordinate queued task saves with comment edits.
A user can open the editor and save new text while a task save is pending. The editor and task handlers already use the same updateComment path, and that path serializes calls per environment, but it does not rebase captured bodies. A queued B save can therefore run after the editor save and overwrite the new text with B's older whole-body snapshot. Rebase queued saves on the latest comment state or add comment-level coordination that removes this stale write.

Update the queued save flow in usePullRequestTaskToggle around queue.current and
save(next) so a task save applies its change to the latest comment body when it
executes, preserving intervening editor text; alternatively, coordinate task and
editor updates at the comment level so stale whole-body snapshots cannot
overwrite newer edits. Keep the existing updateComment serialization and
safeguards intact.

Fixed in 9171555: a burst of toggles keeps its optimistic body until the queue drains, and the app refreshes once at the end instead of after every save.

@ethanleifer I verified that the hook keeps the optimistic body visible until the queue drains and refreshes once afterward. That addresses the intermediate-refresh issue.
The separate editor-save race remains. usePullRequestTaskToggle.ts, Line 36, still saves the captured next body. The Summary tab also allows editing while task saves remain queued. A queued task save can therefore overwrite intervening editor text.
Please coordinate editor saves with the task queue, or rebase queued task changes before saving. Add a regression test that queues two toggles, saves editor text while the first toggle is pending, and verifies that the final body preserves the editor text.

Not fixing this one. Hitting it means toggling, then opening the editor, typing, and saving before the queued task saves finish, all within one request round trip. Coordinating the editor with the task queue would add more machinery than that case justifies.

@ethanleifer Understood. You’ve chosen to accept this edge case rather than add coordination between task saves and editor saves. I won’t press for that change.
A refresh after one save could hide toggles still queued, so the next toggle
overwrote them. A failed save left its change in the saves queued behind it.
Now a burst of toggles holds its optimistic body until the queue drains,
refreshes once at the end, and a failure cancels the saves queued behind it.

After a save settled, the optimistic body stayed in state. If someone later
reverted the comment to its old text, the stale body showed again and the next
toggle could save over their change.

Follow-up Comments
Use source ranges instead of searching the original comment text.
61-66: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Use source ranges instead of searching the original comment text.
When a reachable timeline comment contains duplicate task text inside removed attachment content, text.indexOf(segment.text, searchFrom) can return the attachment occurrence. setMarkdownTaskChecked then changes that valid marker and saves a body with the attachment text modified instead of the clicked task.
Carry the original source range on each segment from splitPullRequestBody, and use the markdown segment's recorded start at this mapping site. A blind lastIndexOf replacement is not safe because a later attachment can contain the duplicate.

around lines 61 - 66:
Update splitPullRequestBody to retain each segment’s original source range, then
use the markdown segment’s recorded start in the mapping that currently searches
with text.indexOf. Ensure setMarkdownTaskChecked targets the clicked task’s
source location even when duplicate text appears in removed attachment content;
do not replace this search with lastIndexOf.

Re the follow-up on PullRequestMarkdown.tsx lines 61-66: not changing this. A wrong match needs an attachment line before the segment that contains the segment's whole text, including its [ ] marker. Attachment lines are bare media URLs or <video> tags, so that does not occur in practice, and carrying source ranges through splitPullRequestBody would change every segment's shape for it.
