feat(web): choose a separate font for chat messages - #27507
Typography settings apply one interface font to everything. Users who want reading-oriented text in conversations (for example a serif, as in Claude's desktop app) must also change every label, button, and sidebar row.
Change
Adds a Chat font row (family and size) to Settings → Appearance → Typography, shown with the other separate fonts (prompt, code, terminal) when "Separate fonts" is on. It applies to user and assistant messages and the new-thread heading; the rest of the UI keeps the interface font and code keeps the monospace font. An empty family inherits the interface font. The size shows "Default" until a user picks one: messages then keep their current interface-relative size, so nothing changes for anyone who doesn't pick a size. Any picked size, 14 px included, applies exactly; reset returns to Default.
fontFamilyChat and fontSizeChat client settings in contracts, applied as --font-chat and --font-size-chat CSS variables.
Headings, tables, and footnotes inside messages scale with the chat size, keeping their current proportions; other Markdown surfaces (plans, file previews) are unchanged.
Same picker, validation, and size control as the prompt font, included in settings search and typography reset.
Mobile is out of scope; its font settings are being discussed in #21987.
Scope and approval
Focused configuration of the existing typography settings: one more family and size slot alongside interface, prompt, code, and terminal, using the same picker and storage. It only changes font-family and font-size on message bodies and font-family on draft hero headings.
Verification
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests, and React Compiler pass.
Manual in the dev web client:
the Chat row is hidden until "Separate fonts" is on, and a settings search for "chat font" reveals it
with Georgia, user and assistant messages and the new-thread heading render in Georgia; tool rows, the composer, and the sidebar stay in the system sans; inline code stays monospace
at a 20 px interface, Default renders messages at 17.5 px (as today) and picking 14 px renders 14 px; reset returns to Default, identical to before this change
appearanceFonts.browser.test.ts covers the Default and picked chat sizes, next to the existing prompt case.

Walkthrough
Client settings now include a chat font family and size. Appearance handling applies these preferences to chat-related CSS variables, and typography settings provide controls to edit, preview, search, and restore them. Chat messages and selected headings use chat typography.

Summary
Define and apply chat preferences packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, apps/web/src/appearanceFonts.ts, apps/web/src/appInit.tsx, apps/desktop/src/settings/DesktopClientSettings.test.ts
Client settings add chat font-family and size fields. Appearance handling clamps chat size and applies the font variables when the chat preferences change.

Typography settings add chat font controls and a preview. Changed-setting detection, default restoration, search, and the preview test mock include chat typography.
Use chat typography in the interface apps/web/src/index.css, apps/web/src/components/chat/*, apps/web/src/components/NoProjectsHero.tsx
Chat message content and selected headings use chat font styling. Message heading, table, and footnote sizes scale relative to the body size.

Distinguish the default size from 14 px.
When the interface size is 20 px, selecting 14 px removes the override and renders messages at 17.5 px. Users cannot select 14 px independently of the interface size. Represent the inherited default separately from an explicit 14 px selection. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

@coderabbitai good catch on 14 px being indistinguishable from the default (appearanceFonts.ts). Fixed in 20bc7e5: fontSizeChat is now nullable. Null is shown as "Default" in the picker and keeps messages on the interface size. Any px value, 14 included, pins the size.
Drops the Default option: the chat size is pixels like the prompt size,
so every value in the picker takes effect and reset returns to 14 px.

@coderabbitai update: dropped the "Default" option again. The chat size is now always applied in pixels, like the prompt size, so every value in the picker takes effect and reset returns to 14 px.

Follow-up Comments
Use the interface-size fallback for a null chat size.
45-45: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Use the interface-size fallback for a null chat size.
When fontSizeChat is null, the app removes --font-size-chat. The assistant message, user message, and settings preview then use var(--text-sm), which is 0.875rem. The interface size is the document root font-size, so 1rem is the correct fallback. The current fallback makes these paths 12.5% smaller than the configured interface size.

Update the chat-size fallback in TimelineAssistantRows and the corresponding
user-message and settings-preview components to use the document root interface
size when --font-size-chat is unset. Replace the smaller text-size fallback with
the equivalent of 1rem, preserving the configured chat-size behavior when the
variable is present.

@dominik-murar Thanks for the fix. I checked the current code, which matches your later update: --font-size-chat is always set in pixels, including 14 px. The chat size is non-nullable, and reset uses the 14 px default. This addresses the original concern without a “Default” option.

@dominik-murar Thanks for the update. Applying every chat size in pixels, including 14 px, addresses the original concern. Resetting to 14 px is consistent with that behavior. No “Default” option is needed.

Scale footnote markers with the chat size.
remark-gfm renders footnote references and back-references as the targeted anchors. User and assistant messages render through ChatMarkdown with chat-message. The global rule fixes both marker types at 0.6875rem, so they do not scale when --font-size-chat changes.

Add a chat-message-scoped rule for footnote reference and back-reference anchors
so their font size scales with `--font-size-chat` instead of retaining the
global fixed size; leave the existing `section[data-footnotes]` rule unchanged.

@coderabbitai footnote markers: fixed in cdb42dd. Footnote references and back-references in messages now scale with the chat size, and they match the old 11 px at the 14 px default.

@dominik-murar Thanks for the fix in cdb42ddd06. The reported change addresses the footnote-marker concern: references and back-references scale with chat size and remain 11 px at the 14 px default.
the focused configuration exception does not cover the changed default here. appearanceFonts.ts always applies a pixel chat size, defaulting to 14, where messages previously followed interface/rem scaling. the author confirms in the follow-up comment that the inherit/default option was deliberately removed. users who never choose a chat size therefore get a different result when they change interface size.
please preserve inherited sizing until a user explicitly chooses a chat size, including reset behavior, or obtain explicit maintainer approval for the new default. then update the relevant evidence and request reconsideration. the separate reading-font configuration remains a useful proposal.

@maria-rcks thanks for the review. Fixed in fdb886c: the chat size is unset by default, so messages keep following the interface size until a user picks a size. The picker shows "Default" in that state, and reset returns to it. The branch is also merged with current main and follows the "Separate fonts" gating from #26559. A browser test covers the Default and picked sizes, and the settings screenshot in the description is updated. Could this be reconsidered?
