feat(fx): add safe CLI updates with cancellation compatibility - #26998
T3 can run fx, but it cannot discover newer releases or update the binary an instance uses. Newer fx releases also report tools cut off by Stop as failed, which makes cancelled commands and sub-agents look broken and can leave a child thread showing raw error JSON.
This completes the existing fx integration's upgrade-and-use path: discover the stable release, upgrade the resolved instance binary safely, and project fx cancellation correctly. The release endpoint currently serves 0.0.16, released October 29; the protocol recordings below were made on 0.0.15. This does not claim a fresh 0.0.16 runtime pass.
Change
Resolve the fx executable from PATH or Binary path, use https://releases.fx.sh/latest.txt for stable-version discovery, and run <resolved binary> upgrade. This updates the instance's binary in place, including installations outside PATH. upgrade works on older supported fx versions; 0.0.16 also ships update as an alias.
Feed maintenance and version advisories through the shared provider services. Existing web, desktop, and mobile provider-update controls consume the same snapshot; there are no new client controls or connection-specific origins.
Keep stopped fx tools/sub-agents interrupted through repeated failures and output-only updates. Only fx failures carrying a cancellation signal qualify; a genuine failure arriving during Stop stays failed. The ACP decoder retains fx's command_result extension so the fx adapter can interpret it. Other ACP providers keep their existing failure behavior.
Decode a stopped fx sub-agent's error envelope into readable error text. Preserve the later final-head assertion that the follow-up command output actually reached the tool.
Retain the macOS 14 safeguard: no update action or latest-version offer on Darwin < 24. fx 0.0.14 raised the binary requirement to macOS 15; blindly upgrading a working 0.0.13 install would break it. The Node built-in diagnostic directive now explains why the OS-release query is needed.
Scope and reconsideration
Continued in replacement #29399. GitHub refused to reopen that PR through both GraphQL and REST, including after temporarily restoring its closing SHA; the validated rebased head is restored on the original fork branch. The original discussion, reviews, and all meaningful prior evidence remain linked below. The closure requested a split between maintenance support and Stop compatibility.
I disagree with requiring a split for this rollout: offering an in-place fx upgrade and correctly handling the cancellation protocol of the supported newer executable form one coherent fx compatibility change. The updater uses the shared provider-maintenance resolver; Stop presentation uses shared ACP projection with an fx-specific cancellation decoder. Their concrete shared dependency is the instance executable and environment: the driver resolves maintenance from that configuration, and the ACP launcher starts the configured executable with acp. An upgrade therefore changes the binary the next session will run. The pieces are technically independently shippable. No SDK upgrade or minimum-version bump forces them to land together. The request is to reconsider the combined rollout on that basis; no maintainer approval is being claimed.
This branch is independent of #27002 (fx child-thread steps/full replies) and #26994 (per-thread fx backend selection). It includes neither feature. #27002 overlaps the fx adapter, ACP support, recorder/fixture registration, and guide; #26994 overlaps fx ACP support, adapter/driver/status, and the guide. Their eventual integration needs overlap review.
Current verification
Rebased all five original commits through 207857a onto upstream main ac8dce0cc3abd8a337f2d806b5082a6834b9b81a; range-diff confirmed all five were preserved before the follow-up fix.
vp test run --project root --project t3 … --maxWorkers 1: 188 tests passed in 10 files, covering the ACP/fx adapters, maintenance, protocol parsing, and fx/Grok/ACP registry/Muse/Cursor replay suites. Completed output.
vp run check:changed upstream/main --concurrency 1: all steps passed, including typechecks of 14 affected packages and 127 tests in six files. Its test invocation used the same Node-only project selection. Completed output and exact commands/method.
The added genuine-failure-during-Stop assertion failed before the fix (interrupted instead of failed), and the protocol-retention assertion failed because command_result was dropped. Failing-before receipts. The current adapter test also exercises the mock ACP subprocess sequence.
git diff --check and commit-hook formatting/lint/Knip passed.
Current validation receipts include the failing regressions and completed checks. No dev server, interactive browser/device verification, or paid provider turn was used for this revival. The default test runner briefly initialized a headless browser project; that run was stopped and excluded from the results. Completed validation uses the Node projects. Historical CLI/MCP observations below have not been refreshed.
Prior evidence retained
The original runtime check used a real fx 0.0.13 executable installed outside PATH:
This is prior runtime evidence, not the current release number or a new CLI run. The original implementation also verified that fx 0.0.15 called t3_project_list through a dev server's stdio MCP bridge after fx stopped accepting MCP servers over ACP (mcpCapabilities.acp: false).
The committed, normalized 0.0.15 protocol recordings remain intact:
Both originally failed on main with expected 'failed' to equal 'interrupted'. The older 0.0.13 transcripts and 0.0.14 fx_subagent recording remain as compatibility coverage. The original fx, Grok, ACP registry, Muse, and Cursor replay suites passed. Prior CI on final original head 207857a also succeeded; that result does not validate the rebased head.
The original 0.0.13 → 0.0.15 audit also checked changes already handled by T3: code → auto mode naming and the additional full-access mode; wrapped and flat sub-agent arguments; plain-text shell results; an ignored Fast option; usage without cost; and additional status/model fields. The user guide retains minimum fx 0.0.13 support, the update workflow and OS restriction, and the correction that fx 0.0.14+ saves the permission mode.
Later review corrections take precedence over initial summaries: repeated failed/output-only updates stay interrupted, genuine pre-Stop failures retain their status, macOS 14 receives neither an incompatible action nor advisory, and the final test checks the later exit 130 output. The revival additionally addresses CodeRabbit's queued-failure concern with the regression described above.
Original implementation: Claude Opus 5.5 through Claude Code. Revival, follow-up fix, and validation: GPT-6.1 Sol through Codex.
fx was manual-only: T3 never knew when a newer fx release was out and
offered no way to update it. fx now resolves its installed binary (PATH or
binaryPath), checks releases.fx.sh/latest.txt (the file `fx upgrade` and
fx's setup script read), and offers `<binary> upgrade`, which replaces the
binary it runs from. Docs cover the minimum version (0.0.13) and updating.

…nterrupted
fx 0.0.15 answers Stop by failing every tool call still open, sub-agents
included, before it acknowledges the cancel. T3 projected those as failed,
and an interrupted fx sub-agent's child thread showed fx's raw error JSON as
its reply. A tool an agent fails after Stop now reads as interrupted, like one
it leaves open, and the fx sub-agent reply shows fx's error text.
Recorded on fx 0.0.15: an fx turn_interrupt_mid_tool variant and
fx_subagent_stop (a Supervised sub-agent stopped while it waits). The 0.0.13
transcripts and the 0.0.14 fx_subagent stay as coverage for older fx.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The change adds fx update checks, an upgrade action, and improved interruption presentation. The new file-level nodeBuiltinImport:off diagnostic suppression requires human review.

After Stop, the first failed update was stored as failed, so a later update
for the same tool no longer matched the open-status check and the card flipped
back to failed. The turn now remembers which tools Stop cut off.

Explanation
The description follows the template sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section states that the fx integration targets 0.0.13 and that T3 has no update support. The Change section explains maintenance resolution, the version advisory, and the ACP interrupt handling. The Verification section gives a runtime check against a real fx 0.0.13 install and names the new recordings and replay suites. The Scope and approval section is missing. It has no linked issue, discussion, or maintainer approval, and the PR objectives describe a larger scope (update checks, fx 0.0.15 support, and shared ACP changes) than a focused fix. The description also includes a closing note about the model used, which the template asks for.

Explain why the shared ACP adapter change (emitTool) and the fx 0.0.15 compatibility changes belong in the same PR as the update checks. Keep the Problem, Change, and Verification sections as they are, or state the same content under the template headings.

fx releases after 0.0.13 need macOS 15, and `fx upgrade` installs the latest
release without checking, so Update now on macOS 14 would leave an fx that
cannot start. Older Macs get neither the update action nor a latest-version
check, so T3 does not advertise a release they cannot run.

The PR adds fx version discovery and an upgrade action while independently repairing tool/subagent interruption projection after Stop. The updater is usable for the existing fx 0.0.13 integration, and correcting failed-after-cancel statuses works without adding update discovery or commands. No SDK upgrade or minimum-version change requires these two changes to land together.
Split fx update discovery/action support from the ACP/fx Stop-status and subagent-result correction, retaining the maintenance checks and cancellation regressions with the respective PRs.

feat(fx): add safe CLI updates with cancellation compatibility
Nov 2, 2026
Opened replacement #29399 because GitHub refused to reopen this PR through GraphQL and REST, including after restoring its closing SHA. The REST error said the branch was force-pushed or recreated. The original fork branch now contains the validated rebased head.
Regarding the scope closure. I disagree with requiring a split here: offering an in-place fx upgrade and handling the newer executable's cancellation protocol make a coherent fx compatibility rollout. Both paths use the instance's configured binary and environment (maintenance resolution, ACP launch). The pieces can technically ship independently; no SDK or minimum-version change makes them inseparable. This requests reconsideration and does not claim maintainer approval.
The original five commits are rebased onto upstream main ac8dce0cc3abd8a337f2d806b5082a6834b9b81a. The final-head fixes remain: repeated/output-only updates stay interrupted, macOS 14 receives no incompatible update offer, and the test asserts the later exit 130 output. The diagnostic directive now explains the OS-version query.
I also reproduced the remaining queued-failure concern: a genuine failure arriving during Stop became interrupted. The follow-up fix requires fx's cancellation signal and retains its command-result extension. Genuine errors, including clipped indeterminate-command error envelopes, remain failed. The regression failed before the fix and passes now.
Current verification: 188 focused tests passed; check:changed passed all steps, with 14 affected packages typechecked and 127 adjacent tests passing. Receipts and exact commands, failing-before output, and mock ACP runtime receipt are uploaded. Tests use the Node projects; an initial unfiltered run that initialized a headless browser was stopped and excluded. No fresh UI/device or real-provider turn is claimed. The description preserves the original CLI/MCP observations, protocol recordings, and prior CI as historical evidence, and updates the stale latest-release framing to fx 0.0.16.
The branch is independent of #27002 and #26994. Their fx adapter/support/docs overlap is called out in the description for integration review.
