Problem

In Settings → Appearance → Font, the default "SF Pro" entry in the dropdown is written in a serif font instead of SF Pro. "SF Pro" is a synthetic label produced for the macOS system UI face, but it is not a resolvable CSS font family name, so an element styled with font-family: "SF Pro" falls back to the browser default (serif).

Change

Added displayFontFamily() in apps/web/src/appearanceFonts.ts to map the synthetic "SF Pro" (and "SF Mono") labels to resolvable CSS families, and used it in FontFamilyPicker.tsx for both dropdown rows and the trigger button.

Scope and approval

Very small, focused fix for an obvious UI bug: only the display face of the synthetic labels changes; stored setting values are unchanged. No prior issue or discussion.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck).
  • Manual check on macOS: the "SF Pro" row and selected value now render in the San Francisco face instead of a serif.

Walkthrough

The font picker now uses displayFontFamily to set font-family styles for its options, including the default-family option. The helper maps SF Pro and SF Mono labels to font stacks and returns parsed CSS families or an empty string for other inputs.

thanks @plusk-dev. your synthetic-label mapping addresses the serif fallback correctly. i kept your commits, merged main, and narrowed the fix to dropdown previews. the closed trigger keeps its existing inherited font. the helper reuses existing stacks, preserves an installed SF Pro face before its fallback, and retains ordinary-name quoting. final diff: 2 files, +18/-2.

passed on 0cc5fd46b4c525fbccef996cec6e133e62668c00:

  • blacksmith vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, affected typechecks.
  • blacksmith vp test run apps/web/src/components/settings/TypographySettings.browser.test.tsx: 1 test passed.
  • real app in system chrome: installed-font selection, persistence after reload, default reset, advanced prompt/code pickers, synthetic mappings and ordinary-name quoting.
  • two independent code reviews approved this head. both historical bot findings are resolved by the retained backreference and quoting behavior.

waiting: github CI is action_required, with no jobs started, pending maintainer workflow approval. native macos rendering and electron were not exercised on this linux vm. these matching captures use the real app and installed fonts with navigator.platform emulated as MacIntel; they prove the fallback correction, not native SF rendering.

before: main renders the synthetic SF Pro dropdown row in serif

after: final head renders the synthetic SF Pro dropdown row in sans

Minor · Apply displayFontFamily to the trigger label. · FontFamilyPicker.tsx:185-187

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Apply displayFontFamily to the trigger label.

The dropdown row maps SF Pro through displayFontFamily, but the selected/default trigger renders the raw label. When defaultFamily or selectedFamily is SF Pro, the trigger therefore inherits its surrounding font instead of using the San Francisco stack.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified exact head 0cc5fd46b4c525fbccef996cec6e133e62668c00 with repo Playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome on this Linux Boat VM. no source changes or pushes were needed.

  • read the description, diff, discussion and authors. the final diff changes dropdown row previews only; the closed trigger retains its inherited interface font, as the takeover intended.
  • ran vp i and background dev on github/main (8947f3e3533d97cd91e4a02e9ae08ff1b2b07408) in ../main. stopped its captured process group before starting the PR. ran vp i on the exact head and background vp run dev --home-dir /home/user/t3code/.t3: web 5733, server 13773.
  • on each version, added a project pointing at the real /home/user/t3code git repo through the app, created a thread, selected Codex gpt-6.1-sol, and submitted a real turn. both returned Font verification ready. through the web client.
  • Settings → Appearance → Typography: granted real local-font enumeration permission. installed-font rows render distinct serif, sans and monospace faces. selected DejaVu Serif, confirmed the live interface changed, reloaded and confirmed persistence, then reset to default.
  • the monospace picker rejected DejaVu Sans with the fixed-width-font error and kept its prior value. it accepted DejaVu Sans Mono.
  • Blacksmith: vp test run apps/web/src/components/settings/TypographySettings.browser.test.tsx passed, 1 test. the worker initially needed Playwright Chromium installed; the rerun passed after installation. no new tests or fixtures.

matching main/PR captures show the actual Linux installed-font path. they are regression evidence, not a reproduction of the SF Pro bug. code/diff/terminal text inside Settings is the existing app preview, not results from this run.

main: actual Linux font dropdown

PR: actual Linux font dropdown

PR: selecting an installed serif font changes the live interface

PR: real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turn completed

Not verified

the specific SF Pro/SF Mono synthetic-label fix remains unverified. main on Linux produces real Linux/default labels, not the Apple-only synthetic labels. the original SF Pro serif fallback could not be reproduced through the natural user path here. no platform spoofing, injected fonts, mocks or seeded demo data were used. native macOS is needed to reproduce on main and compare the SF Pro row and SF Mono fallback. native desktop, iOS/Android, Windows, relay/tunnel and other providers were not exercised.

reported PR contexts show no failures, which does not replace native rendering proof. brief CPU-overload warnings occurred during initial compilation; the app recovered and neither app nor provider stalled for 10 minutes.

startup correction: the first root-checkout launch selected the default T3 home. it was stopped before browser use and restarted with the explicit isolated directory above. all PR scenario data was created through that isolated running app.

result: Linux regression checks passed; the requested Apple-specific behavior is unverifiable on this VM. no merge, close, rebase, force-push or label changes.
