Changes

  • Import security changes from the ptero 1.13.3 releases
  • For now the denylist logic we added to SFTP was removed because of an exception (will fix this later

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added configurable Docker CPU scheduling, including CPU period, shares, and burst capacity. CPU burst settings are applied during container startup and resource updates.
    • Configuration updates can rotate remote authentication credentials without restarting services.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved remote credential validation and reporting of token file-read errors.
    • SFTP Setstat requests with unsupported attributes are rejected, and permission defaults are applied consistently.
    • CPU burst handling now accounts for unsupported controls and unavailable container details.
  • Behavior Changes

    • SFTP file-operation requests no longer reject paths based on ignored-path settings.

Note

Harden token credential resolution and add Docker CPU burst controls

  • Adds Configuration.ResolveToken to derive token credentials from environment overrides or config values, and the configuration update API now validates and rejects empty, indirect, or mismatched credentials before persisting and rotating the Panel client credentials via the new remote.Client.SetCredentials (router_system.go, http.go).
  • Adds configurable CFS period, CPU burst percentage, and CPU shares to DockerConfiguration, with the CPU period clamped to 1,000–1,000,000 microseconds, and applies best-effort CPU burst writes (cpu.max.burst on cgroup v2, cpu.cfs_burst_us on v1) when starting or updating containers (cgroup_burst.go, settings.go).
  • config.Expand now returns the read error for unreadable file:// values instead of an empty string, and in-place container updates clear the CPU burst before changing limits and restore it afterward (container.go).
  • Fixes SFTP handling: Setstat requests with extended or missing attributes are rejected with ErrSSHFxBadMessage, and fxErr.As now supports pkg/sftp's private error matching (handler.go, utils.go).
  • Risk: sftp.eventHandler.Log in event.go has unbalanced braces and breaks the build; remote.Client implementations must now implement SetCredentials; container resource mapping no longer uses the fixed 100,000 µs period and 1,024 shares.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds token resolution and remote credential rotation, configurable Docker CPU scheduling and cgroup burst support, and SFTP Setstat validation and error matching.

Changes

Token resolution and credential rotation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Token resolution and validation
config/config.go, config/config_token_test.go
Configuration resolves local token values, validates remote token values and environment overrides, and returns file-read errors. Tests cover remote token resolution.
Remote credential rotation
remote/http.go, remote/http_test.go, router/router_system.go, router/router_system_test.go, router/router_server_backup_test.go
The HTTP client synchronizes credential access. Configuration updates resolve credentials and update the Panel client. Tests cover credential rotation.

Docker CPU scheduling and burst support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Docker CPU resource configuration
config/config_docker.go, config/config_docker_test.go, environment/settings.go
Docker configuration adds CPU period, burst, and shares settings. Resource conversion uses the configured period and shares.
Cgroup burst calculation and application
environment/docker/cgroup_burst.go, environment/docker/cgroup_burst_test.go
The Docker package calculates burst values, resolves cgroup CPU files, and writes burst values. Tests cover calculations and path resolution.
Container lifecycle burst wiring
environment/docker/container.go, environment/docker/power.go, server/install.go
Container start and installation apply burst values. Resource updates clear burst before changing limits and reapply it after a successful update.

SFTP request and error handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Setstat validation and mode handling
sftp/handler.go, sftp/handler_test.go
Setstat rejects unsupported attributes and derives permission modes. The shared Filecmd path no longer checks ignored paths.
Error matching and supporting edits
sftp/utils.go, sftp/event.go, sftp/server.go
fxErr.As supports matching the private SFTP error type. The event map brace and server comment and whitespace are edited.

Merge Risk: 🔴 Critical · up to 95e26

This change does not build: a missing brace in the SFTP activity logger breaks compilation of the SFTP package, so Wings cannot be built or deployed. Several earlier issues are also still open. The most important are that SFTP modification commands no longer respect the egg file denylist, and Setstat can apply unintended permission changes. CPU burst handling and credential rotation also have reliability gaps. Fix the compile error and the denylist regression before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 95e26

The proposed SFTP changes weaken protected-path enforcement for authenticated users. CPU-resource updates and credential rotation also have lifecycle-consistency risks. Existing authentication, operation permissions, and per-server filesystem boundaries limit the demonstrated exposure; cross-server or host-wide compromise is not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: Filecmd no longer rejects denylisted source paths. Authenticated users with the relevant update or delete permission can now rename, chmod, or remove paths that the base rejected. Direct filesystem mutation wrappers do not restore that policy. Read/write denylist checks and root confinement remain, but they do not prevent these mutations.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The new privileged burst writer does not bind the inspected PID and resolved cgroup to a stable container identity through the write. Process exit and PID reuse could therefore misdirect a write, although exploit timing and production permissions are unproven. Separately, a failed burst clear can cause a lower quota update to fail while synchronization only logs the failure, conditionally leaving older resource controls active. Path filtering, bounded burst values, normal power locking, and container recreation mitigate but do not fully resolve these lifecycle cases.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: Credential rotation publishes disk configuration, global authentication/JWT state, and outbound-client credentials under separate locks. Two already-authorized concurrent updates can interleave and leave those stores using different credential generations despite successful responses. The client mutex prevents torn credential pairs, not this cross-store inconsistency. Disk/global publication separation predates the PR, but live authentication and outbound rotation newly depend on consistent publication.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated denylist regression is bounded to a server selected by authenticated SFTP identity and requires relevant file-operation permissions. Credential-publication inconsistency affects the node-wide client, including Panel-backed SFTP validation. A misdirected cgroup write could affect another container on the same host; host-wide impact is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A user with file-update permission can now rename a denylisted source into an allowed path. With file-read permission, subsequent reading may pass the remaining path-based denylist check. Delete permission independently enables direct removal of a denied source. This is supported by the policy delta, not by a completed verifier receipt; the supplied candidates remain deferred.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The configuration-update route requires the current node bearer token. Remote credential values cannot request environment or file indirection, and configured environment overrides must match. Outbound requests snapshot the credential pair under a read lock. These controls constrain unauthorized rotation and secret expansion, but do not serialize the full rotation transaction.
  • observed — Cgroup destinations come from the inspected process's kernel cgroup record rather than a caller-supplied path. Controller selection, absolute-path validation, traversal rejection, and a capped burst percentage constrain ordinary writes. They do not verify identity continuity after Docker inspection.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Ordinary start, stop, and restart actions use a per-server power lock, but emergency termination may proceed without it. Resource synchronization invokes InSituUpdate without that power lock and logs update failures. These recovery choices limit the protection that outer serialization provides to the new cgroup transitions.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Restore protected-path enforcement for filesystem mutations at a shared policy boundary, checking relevant source and destination paths. Preserve operation permissions and descriptor-based confinement as separate controls.
  • proposed — Bind burst writes to a stable container/cgroup identity and make failed clearing or quota application externally distinguishable from successful enforcement. Define reconciliation when bursting is disabled or a lifecycle operation fails.
  • proposed — Serialize credential updates across persistence and both runtime publications, or use generation checks and reconciliation so overlapping updates cannot leave different credential generations active.

Learning: In the server package, when quotas are enabled via config.Get().System.Quotas.Enabled, the disk space check using used >= s.DiskSpace() does not require a special guard for unlimited-disk scenarios (DiskSpace() <= 0). The filesystem handles such cases, so the existing check is sufficient. Apply this pattern to similar quota-related disk checks in the server package and ensure tests/docs reflect that unlimited-disk behavior is governed by the filesystem, not by an extra guard in code.

Security regression: Filecmd lost the egg denylist check.

On main, Filecmd starts with h.fs.IsIgnored(request.Filepath); that check was removed here with no replacement (only Fileread/Filewrite kept theirs). The underlying Filesystem.Rename/Delete/Chmod/Symlink don't enforce the denylist either (Delete calls RemoveAll, not SafeDeleteRecursively), so an SFTP user with file.update/file.delete can now Setstat/Rename/Rmdir/Remove/Symlink denylisted files — and renaming a denylisted file to a non-matching path then defeats the remaining read/write checks too. This is strictly weaker than the HTTP API, which checks both sides of a rename.

Suggested fix — restore the check (and also cover the target path, which main didn't):

	if err := h.fs.IsIgnored(request.Filepath); err != nil {
		return sftp.ErrSSHFxNoSuchFile
	}
	if request.Target != "" {
		if err := h.fs.IsIgnored(request.Target); err != nil {
			return sftp.ErrSSHFxPermissionDenied
		}
	}

The PR description mentions the denylist removal will be fixed later, but since it's an access-control regression it seems worth fixing before merge rather than after.

ResolveToken(true) can permanently desync wings from the Panel after a token rotation.

Scenario: an operator pins credentials via WINGS_TOKEN/WINGS_TOKEN_ID (previously a silent, supported override). A Panel admin then resets the node token: the Panel's NodeUpdateService authenticates with the old token but pushes the new one. This endpoint now 500s with does not match environment override before WriteToDisk — but the Panel only catches ConnectionException, so it commits the new token on its side anyway. Result: every wings→Panel request 401s, and every subsequent config push (even ones not touching tokens) keeps failing until someone hand-edits the env var. Pre-PR, the update was applied and the env override kept winning, which left a recovery path.

Suggested fix: on an env-override mismatch, don't reject the push — accept and persist the Panel's config (the env override still wins at runtime, as before) and log a warning that the override is now stale. That keeps the operator informed without letting the two sides permanently disagree.

A valid config can now produce a CFS quota Docker rejects, making the server impossible to create or update.

The quota is derived as CpuLimit * period / 100 with no floor, but moby's verifyPlatformContainerSettings rejects any quota below 1000µs (“CPU cfs quota can not be less than 1ms (i.e. 1000)”), failing both ContainerCreate and ContainerUpdate. E.g. cpu_period: 10000 (valid — and the config comment encourages shorter periods) with a 5% CPU limit yields 500µs. The failure window is CpuLimit * period < 100000; at the clamp floor period=1000, every limit under 100% breaks. The old hardcoded 100000µs period could never produce an invalid quota.

Suggested change
resources.CPUQuota = l.CpuLimit * period / 100

// Docker rejects a CFS quota below 1ms.

Recomputing the quota from current config silently disables bursting for existing containers after a cpu_period change.

This duplicates the formula in environment/settings.go (drift risk), but the real problem: if an admin raises docker.cpu_period and restarts wings, Start's already-running branch computes a burst from the new period that exceeds the container's creation-time quota — the kernel rejects the cpu.max.burst write with EINVAL (burst > quota), and after the single sync.Once warning every failure is debug-level, so bursting is silently absent fleet-wide until containers are rebuilt.

Suggested fix: use the container's actual quota instead of recomputing it. SetCpuBurst already does a ContainerInspect — read c.HostConfig.Resources.CPUQuota from that result (exactly what server/install.go already does) and drop the quota parameter/recomputation here.

Cgroup path resolution breaks when wings itself runs in a container (a shipped deployment — this repo has a Dockerfile), and the failure warning is misleading.

Per cgroup_namespaces(7), /proc/<pid>/cgroup paths are rendered relative to the reader's cgroup namespace. Host-installed wings sees full host paths and works, but containerized wings fails on several fronts: with a private cgroupns the target's path renders as /../..., which this .. filter skips (→ “no cpu controller found”); without host PID namespace /proc/<host-pid> isn't even the right process; and the container's /sys/fs/cgroup mount typically exposes only its own subtree. With cpu_burst.enabled defaulting to true, every containerized install logs one false “requires Linux 5.14 or newer” warning and the feature silently never works.

Separately, nothing validates that the resolved path belongs to the target container before os.WriteFile — a crashed container plus PID reuse between inspect and write would mutate an unrelated cgroup. A cheap guard for both: verify the resolved path contains the container ID (holds under both /docker/<id> and docker-<id>.scope layouts), and mention cgroup-namespace visibility in the warning text.

If ContainerUpdate fails, the burst just cleared here is never restored.

clearCpuBurst runs before the update, but on the ContainerUpdate error path the function returns before reaching applyCpuBurst, leaving a running server with its burst silently stripped (failed clears/applies only log at debug) until the next successful update or restart.

Suggested fix — re-apply on the error path:

	if _, err := e.client.ContainerUpdate(ctx, e.Id, container.UpdateConfig{
		Resources: e.Configuration.Limits().AsContainerResources(),
	}); err != nil {
		// Restore the burst we cleared above; the old limits still apply.
		e.applyCpuBurst(ctx)
		return errors.Wrap(err, "environment/docker: could not update container")
	}

This reflection-based impersonation of pkg/sftp's private fxerr type is fragile — and a compile-checked alternative exists.

The match hard-codes PkgPath() == "github.com/pkg/sftp", Name() == "fxerr", kind uint32. A fork (this org just renamed its own module), a /v2 module path, or an upstream type rename makes As silently return false — statusFromError falls back to generic SSH_FX_FAILURE(4) and clients stop seeing SSH_FX_QUOTA_EXCEEDED(15), with no compile error or test signal.

pkg/sftp exports typed constants of fxerr (ErrSSHFxOk etc.), and Go constant arithmetic on an exported typed constant yields a value of that same (unexported) type — so a genuine fxerr is constructible from outside the package and errors.As matches it natively:

// SSH_FX_QUOTA_EXCEEDED per draft-ietf-secsh-filexfer; sftp.ErrSSHFxOk + 15 is a
// real pkg/sftp fxerr, so statusFromError's errors.As matches it without reflection,
// and any dependency change breaks loudly at compile time.
type quotaExceededError struct{}

func (quotaExceededError) Error() string { return "Quota Exceeded" }
func (quotaExceededError) Unwrap() error { return sftp.ErrSSHFxOk + 15 }

var ErrSSHQuotaExceeded error = quotaExceededError{}

The wrapper keeps the friendly message (the bare constant would print pkg/sftp's default “failure”); errors.As finds the fxerr via Unwrap. The whole reflect-based As/Error machinery (and the reflect import) can then be deleted.

Redundant second ContainerInspect — both hot call sites already hold a fresh inspect result.

InSituUpdate and Start's already-running branch both call e.ContainerInspect and even read c.State.Pid right before applyCpuBurst, which then re-inspects the same container just to re-obtain the pid — doubling Docker API round-trips per limit update and per boot-time reattach. It also uses the raw client's slow JSON decoder, bypassing the optimized (*Environment).ContainerInspect fast path this project added specifically for this endpoint.

Suggested fix: pass the known pid (and, per the other comment, the actual quota) through from callers — clearCpuBurst(pid) already models the shape. Only the post-ContainerStart site in power.go genuinely needs its own inspect.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR introduces default-enabled CPU cgroup behavior and cross-cutting authentication and SFTP access-control changes. A concrete denylist regression, token-rotation risk, and additional container resource-management concerns leave material security and operational impact requiring human assessment.

Reject unsupported attribute flags before parsing.

For a valid SIZE-only payload, pkg/sftp v1.13.10 returns a non-nil FileStat with zero Mode. This code then defaults the mode to 0644, and Filecmd calls Chmod instead of rejecting the unsupported flag. (github.com)

Require the permissions flag as the only supported attribute before calling request.Attributes().

Verify that the cgroup write stays scoped to the inspected container.

SetCpuBurst obtains a PID through ContainerInspect, then the writer reads /proc/<pid>/cgroup and writes the resolved file. applyCpuBurst derives quota from the current configuration, but an existing container retains the quota set when it was created. After cpu_period changes, the calculated burst can exceed that quota.
