What and why

devframe 1.2.4 added client-side RPC caching (connectDevframe({ cacheOptions })). This turns it on in the panel for one function only, pangular:build-meta, so the Dashboard's project details stop asking the server again every time the Dashboard loads.

  • PANEL_CACHED_RPC in config.ts lists the functions the panel may cache. Today that is only pangular:build-meta, which reads package.json, installed versions and angular.json/project.json, none of which a running dev server reloads.
  • The panel passes cacheOptions: { functions: PANEL_CACHED_RPC }, an explicit list. With true, the panel would also cache any static or cacheable function the hub or a plugin registers.
  • build-meta gets cacheable: true to document intent (it is already static).
  • devframe clears the cache when the connection drops, and the panel builds a new client on reconnect, so a restarted server is always asked again.

Not cached, on purpose: the source scans, analog-project, get-http-rules, and every function that reads live page state, since their answers change while you work.

Docs: the contributing page explains PANEL_CACHED_RPC and what may go in it. The Dashboard page notes that project details are read once per connection, so you restart the dev server or reload the panel after upgrading a package or editing angular.json.

How it was verified

  • pnpm commit:check
  • pnpm format:check
  • pnpm typecheck
  • pnpm test:devtools (3102) and pnpm test:panel (738). A new panel-rpc-cache.test.ts starts a real devframe dev server and client: two build-meta calls make one server call, a non-listed query makes one server call per client call, and a new server after a close serves fresh data. The tests fail with the cache off or with another function added to the list.
  • pnpm skills:check
  • Docs in apps/docs updated and pnpm docs:build passes
  • pnpm extension:build and extension/ui committed
  • Checked in the browser with axe (no visible UI change)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Project metadata is cached while the dev server connection remains active, reducing repeated requests. The cache refreshes after reconnecting.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified when project details update and which information remains cached until the dev server restarts or the panel reloads.

The Dashboard asked the server for build-meta every time it loaded,
although the answer only changes when the dev server restarts. Turn on
devframe's client cache for an explicit list, PANEL_CACHED_RPC, that
holds only pangular:build-meta, and mark build-meta cacheable. Every
other call still reaches the server. devframe clears the cache when the
connection status changes and the panel replaces a dropped client, so a
restarted server is always asked again.
Rebuild extension/ui so the extension's panel caches build-meta like the hosted panel.

📝 Walkthrough

The panel now requests connection-level caching for pangular:build-meta. Tests cover cached and uncached RPC calls, cache invalidation after a server restart, and cache options on retry connections. Documentation describes the cache behavior.

Changes: Panel RPC caching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and verify cached RPC behavior
packages/devtools/src/config.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/build-meta.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/panel-rpc-cache.test.ts
PANEL_CACHED_RPC lists pangular:build-meta, and getBuildMeta is marked cacheable. Integration tests cover cached responses, uncached list-pages calls, and cache clearing after a server restart.
Pass cache options through panel connections
app/src/rpc.ts, app/src/app.ts, app/src/__tests__/app-shell.test.ts, apps/docs/src/content/contributing/development.md, apps/docs/src/content/inspectors/dashboard.md, extension/ui/assets/browser-agent-rpc-BXhoSh1z-rr8okg_T.js, extension/ui/index.html
The app passes cache options to each devframe connection. Retry tests check the options and closure of the dropped client. Documentation describes cache eligibility and connection behavior. The UI asset references now use index-CF_JeO4X.js.
