Summary

Adds a built-in jsonValue schema that validates JSON-serializable values (strings, finite numbers, booleans, null, and objects/arrays that recursively contain only these types), plus its JsonValue type, JsonValueIssue, and full API/guide documentation.

Closes #1585, and follows up on the documentation-only outcome of #933 by replacing the guide's hand-rolled recipe with a built-in schema.

Design decisions (from #1585 discussion)

This implementation deliberately follows several decisions reached in the issue thread rather than the original proposal, based on feedback from @fabian-hiller:

  • Ships in valibot core, not a separate package. @dosu's analysis argued core inclusion fits precedent (email, uuid, url, etc.) and costs nothing for non-users thanks to tree-shaking; this was accepted.
  • Implemented as a complete primitive, not a preassembled composition. The original proposal (and JSON type #933's suggestion) built jsonValue as lazy(() => union([string(), number(), boolean(), null_(), array(...), record(...)])). Fabian raised a concern that this doesn't fit the library's architecture: "I am unsure about the fact that this is a preassembled schema instead of a primitive schema on its own... All other schemas ship their own schema object." After reviewing array.ts and record.ts, the conclusion (mine, agreed by Fabian) was that no existing schema holds and delegates to other schema instances it built and hid internally — every schema either does its own checks inline or orchestrates schemas the caller explicitly passed in. So jsonValue is implemented as a hand-rolled primitive: it branches across all six value shapes directly in its own ~run, reusing only internal utilities (_isValidObjectKey, _addIssue) the way array.ts/record.ts already do, not other public schema factories.
  • Precise nested error paths, not a generic "invalid JSON" error. Fabian asked what should happen for a deeply nested issue — a generic top-level error, or a path to the exact property? The agreed answer: same mechanism as array/record. Each recursion level prepends its own ArrayPathItem/ObjectPathItem to the issue path, so e.g. { address: { zip: undefined } } reports an issue at address.zip, not a blanket "invalid JSON".
  • No async variant — there's no user-provided validation involved, so this wasn't needed.

Cycle detection

Beyond what was discussed in the issue, recursing into an untrusted self-referencing value needed handling: JSON.stringify throws on cycles, and the original recursive implementation would overflow the call stack with an uncaught RangeError, breaking safeParse's no-throw contract.

_runJsonValue now threads a WeakSet<object> (visiting) through the recursion, tracking only the arrays/objects on the active recursion path (ancestors), not every value seen. A value that references one of its own ancestors is rejected with a normal validation issue instead of being followed; a value reused across sibling branches (not an ancestor) is still accepted. The set entry for a container is added before recursing into its children and removed afterward, on every normal exit path (including abortEarly early-break).

A second WeakSet<object> (validated) memoizes containers already found fully valid via some other reference to them, so a value shared across many sibling branches (for example a diamond-shaped or deeply reused object graph) is walked once instead of once per reference — otherwise validating it costs time exponential in the number of references, which is reachable from small, entirely valid, non-malicious input (for example anything rehydrated with shared references by structuredClone or similar).

Validation-only behavior (updated after review)

jsonValue was originally rebuilding every array/object it validated into a fresh copy, and silently dropping __proto__, prototype, and constructor keys during that rebuild — which could change otherwise-valid JSON data. @yslpn flagged this: jsonValue should stay validation-only and preserve the original input on success.

Since jsonValue never reshapes values (there's no transform semantics here, only validation), the rebuild wasn't actually needed. It now:

  • Never writes to dataset.value. On both success and failure, the returned value is the exact same array/object reference the input was, not a copy.
  • No longer excludes __proto__, prototype, or constructor — since nothing is copied into a new object anymore, there's no prototype-pollution surface those exclusions were protecting against, so those keys are now validated like any other own key.
  • Because the input is no longer copied, mutating the returned value also mutates the original input value.

Other behavior notes

  • NaN, Infinity, and -Infinity are rejected at runtime via Number.isFinite (the JsonValue type can't express this — TypeScript has no finite-number type — so this is documented as a known type/runtime gap in a doc comment).
  • Non-plain objects (Date, Map, Set, or a custom class instance) and Array subclass instances are rejected with an issue, even ones with no own enumerable properties. Since the input is never copied, accepting one would return it live and typed as JsonValue. This plain-object/plain-array check is a heuristic for ordinary, non-adversarial input (like a Date passed in by mistake), not a sound, attacker-proof guarantee — a Proxy can fake its own prototype, or a class's prototype chain can be deliberately shortened to look plain, and no in-language check can be relied on against that threat model. This is documented as a known, accepted limitation rather than something the check tries to fully close.
  • Very deeply (but non-circular) nested input can still exceed the call stack; this is documented as a caller responsibility for untrusted input, consistent with how the rest of the library handles unbounded recursion.

Review

This branch went through an internal review pass covering correctness, test coverage, type design, comment accuracy, and silent-failure analysis before opening this PR. That first pass found and fixed two real bugs during development (now part of this PR's history): NaN/Infinity acceptance, and the circular-reference stack overflow described above. A later round on the open PR caught the validation-only issue described above, now fixed, and then the non-plain-object rejection itself went through several hardening iterations against Date/Map/Set/custom-class instances slipping through as live, uncopied output.

A subsequent full review pass (the five specialized checks above, re-run against this state) found and fixed two further issues before merge-readiness: an exponential-time DoS on small, entirely valid, shared-reference input (fixed via the validated memoization set described above), and Array subclass instances bypassing the non-plain-object rejection that already applied to plain objects (fixed by adding the equivalent check for arrays). It also fixed a self-contradictory circular-reference error message and narrowed the plain-object check's documentation to state plainly that it's a heuristic, not an attacker-proof guarantee, rather than adding another round of hardening to an inherently unclosable gap (a Proxy can always fake its own prototype in the same realm). See the PR's inline comments for the review threads addressing the tightened plain-object/plain-array check.

Fix 1: the JsonValueSchema BaseSchema generic links referenced
../JsonValue/, but no such page existed. Adds
website/src/routes/api/(types)/JsonValue/{index.mdx,properties.ts}
documenting the union type, modeled on ArrayInput's single-Definition
template and Enum's index-signature property pattern for the recursive
object/array branches, and lists it in menu.md immediately before
JsonValueIssue.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01RGCMuVz8MTKgrxfwwHcfE7
Fix 3: reword the API page's Explanation paragraph to match the
non-overclaiming JSDoc wording (no unqualified "without loss" guarantee;
documents Date/Map/Set handling, __proto__/prototype/constructor key
exclusion, and recursion depth limits per Fix 6).

Fix 4: the guide claimed jsonValue is "under the hood... equivalent to"
a hand-rolled lazy/union/record composition. Neither half was accurate
(jsonValue has no internal lazy/union calls, and the two report
structurally different issues). Reworded to describe it as an
illustrative hand-rolled alternative instead of a runtime equivalence.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01RGCMuVz8MTKgrxfwwHcfE7
Fix 5: Task 7 only inserted jsonValue's cross-reference into pages under
(schemas)/, but the same exhaustive-schema-list convention is followed
by 37 additional pages under (methods)/, (actions)/, and (types)/ that
enumerate every schema (verified against library/src/schemas/ via diff
on pipe/check/ExamplesAction). Inserts 'jsonValue', alphabetically after
'intersect', in each, matching Task 7's original anchor pattern.

The 2 other files containing 'lazy', under these directories
(LazySchema/properties.ts, LazySchemaAsync/properties.ts) are the
LazySchema type's own property/reference definitions, not schema lists,
so they were intentionally left unchanged.

…ccuracies

jsonValue previously recursed into arrays/objects without tracking the
active recursion path, so a self-referencing value overflowed the call
stack and escaped safeParse's no-throw contract with an uncaught
RangeError. It now tracks ancestors on the current path in a WeakSet
and reports a normal validation issue for a cycle, while still
accepting the same object/array reused across sibling branches.

Also corrects two doc/comment claims that didn't match the source:
the object schema doesn't treat non-plain objects like Date the same
way record does (it reads its declared entry keys, not the input's
own keys), and the guide's hand-rolled composition accepts Infinity
where jsonValue rejects it. Updates contributor attribution on the
new docs pages to the actual author.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01RGCMuVz8MTKgrxfwwHcfE7
Implements v.jsonValue() as a self-contained schema (no internal
string()/array()/record()/union()/lazy() calls) that validates any
JSON-serializable value, recursing into itself for array items and
object entries the same way array.ts and record.ts already do.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01TwU54gbySpBJnmJUpe1g73
Task 6's dispatch followed the plan's Step 7 literally, which only
specified the Schemas-section jsonValue entry. The Types section
lists every other schema's type pages (e.g. NeverIssue/NeverSchema),
so JsonValueIssue/JsonValueSchema were missing from sidebar
navigation despite their pages existing.

…anch behavior

Fix 2: require Number.isFinite in addition to typeof === 'number' so
NaN/Infinity produce a type issue instead of being silently accepted,
matching the schema's own "without loss" round-trip guarantee. Updates
jsonValue.test.ts to assert issues for NaN/Infinity/-Infinity instead of
asserting no issue.

Fix 3: reword the jsonValue() JSDoc hint and the JsonValue type JSDoc to
stop claiming an unqualified "without loss" guarantee, and instead
document the actual, precedent-based behavior (Date/Map/Set are not
specially handled, same as object/record; __proto__/prototype/constructor
keys are excluded). Adds regression tests locking in this behavior
(Date, Map, Set, and constructor/prototype key exclusion) plus a note
about recursion depth limits (Fix 6). No change to '~run' runtime logic
for non-plain objects, per the controller's ruling that this mirrors the
established object.ts/record.ts convention.

Walkthrough

Adds the jsonValue schema and recursive JsonValue types. The schema validates JSON-compatible primitives, arrays, and objects, rejects unsupported values and circular references, preserves input identity, and reports nested issues. It supports custom messages and abort-early validation. Runtime and type-level tests cover the behavior. The change exports the new APIs and adds API references, guide content, changelog content, menu entries, and related-schema links.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 42304

The new jsonValue schema may accept Map values as valid JSON values while leaving their contents unchecked, producing outputs that do not match the documented JSON-compatible contract. This should be resolved before merge.

Review comment triage

Went through all 14 inline review comments and fixed the 4 that were valid (pushed in 012d7fc). The other 10 were false positives.

Fixed

  • JsonValueSchema.reference doc type (website/.../JsonValueSchema/properties.ts): used modifier: 'readonly', should be 'typeof' to match readonly reference: typeof jsonValue in source — consistent with every other schema's properties.ts.
  • Misleading comment (jsonValue.ts:145): "plain object" → "object", since the branch also handles Date/Map/Set.
  • JsonValue type page: added a note that NaN/Infinity/-Infinity type-check as JsonValue but are rejected at runtime, matching the existing JSDoc.
  • Guide caveat: now explicitly states the hand-rolled recipe stack-overflows on circular references (previously only mentioned the non-finite-number difference).

False positives (not changed)

The 10 comments suggesting jsonValue be removed from keyof/pick/partial/bigint/void/promise/blob/date's "Related > Schemas" lists (plus adding a reciprocal instance link) misread an existing convention: that list is a fixed, boilerplate enumeration of ~23 structural schema names applied identically to every schema/method/type page, not a type-compatibility list. Confirmed record/map/union were already on blob's page before this PR, despite being equally "incompatible" under a literal reading. Removing jsonValue from these, or adding instance reciprocally, would be inconsistent with how every other entry already works.

I took a quick look at the implementation itself.

Could jsonValue remain validation-only and preserve the original input on success? It currently rebuilds objects/arrays and silently drops __proto__, prototype, and constructor, which can change valid JSON data.

Hi @yslpn, Thank you for reviewing the PR.

The original exclusion of __proto__/prototype/constructor was carried over from record.ts's pattern for guarding against prototype pollution when copying into a new object. But since jsonValue doesn't need to reshape input the way record does, that copy (and the exclusion it required) wasn't actually necessary here.

Fixed in (6d4ce3b): jsonValue no longer writes to dataset.value, so the original input reference is returned unchanged on success, and __proto__, prototype, and constructor are now validated like any other own key instead of being dropped.

Fixes 4 confirmed issues from PR open-circle#1610 review comments: the
JsonValueSchema `reference` property doc used the wrong type
modifier (`readonly` instead of `typeof`, inconsistent with every
other schema's properties.ts), the object-branch comment in
jsonValue.ts mislabeled non-plain objects as "plain object", the
JsonValue type page omitted the documented NaN/Infinity runtime
gap, and the guide's hand-rolled-recipe caveat didn't call out that
it stack-overflows on circular references (only non-finite numbers
were mentioned).

The other 10 review comments (removing jsonValue from unrelated
schema/method "Related" lists, and adding a reciprocal `instance`
link) were false positives: that list is a fixed, boilerplate
enumeration of ~23 structural schema names applied identically to
every schema/method/type page regardless of literal type
compatibility, as confirmed by `record`/`map`/`union` already being
present on pages like `blob` before this PR existed.

The guide implied jsonValue accepts anything JSON.stringify can
serialize. It doesn't: Date instances, other class instances, and
sparse arrays are all rejected even though stringify handles them.
jsonValue's own plain-object checks already handle a Proxy whose
getPrototypeOf trap throws, but _addIssue calls _stringify to build
the issue message, and _stringify read the prototype again without a
try/catch. That unguarded read threw and escaped safeParse. Since
every schema's error messages go through _stringify, this affected
all of them, not just jsonValue.
Fold types.ts into jsonValue.ts, since jsonValue has no async/variant
siblings that need to share it. Move the private helper functions
(_isPlainObject, _isPlainArray, _cloneJsonValueIssues, _runJsonValue)
into a jsonValue/utils folder, one function per subfolder, matching
the union/intersect utils convention. No behavior change.

jsonValue takes only an optional message, not a nested schema, and has
no entries property, so it can't combine with function or string, and
pick and keyof can't operate on it.
…claims

jsonValue checks structural shape, not whether the input is
JSON-serializable, so its outcome can differ from JSON.stringify for
a toJSON method (never invoked) and for a sparse array whose holes
read as undefined but can pick up a value from an inherited index.
Date.prototype, Map.prototype, and a plain class's own .prototype sit
at the same one-hop depth above Object.prototype as an ordinary plain
object and usually have no own enumerable properties either, so the
existing plain-object check accepted them and returned the live,
shared prototype object as is, typed as JsonValue.

Add _isConstructorPrototype, checked only against the actual input
value in _runJsonValue, not inside _isPlainObject itself: _isPlainArray
reuses _isPlainObject to confirm an ordinary array's own prototype
(real Array.prototype, itself a constructor prototype object) is
plain-shaped one hop up, so that reuse must keep accepting it.

Also document that jsonValue never invokes a toJSON method, own or
inherited, so its outcome can diverge from JSON.stringify for such
input.

…nValue

_isConstructorPrototype read input.constructor by plain property access,
which invokes a non-enumerable accessor if the input defines one. A
throwing getter on an otherwise plain object was caught and treated as a
constructor prototype, rejecting an object that should have been valid,
since only enumerable own properties are meant to affect validation. It
now reads the own property descriptor instead, so only a real data
property (as every genuine .prototype object has) is considered, and no
accessor is ever invoked. Also adds unit coverage for the still-untested
Proxy input case on _isPlainObject's own getPrototypeOf catch.
…a lists

The earlier cleanup only removed jsonValue from function, string, pick,
and keyof, leaving it on every other leaf schema page (any, bigint,
boolean, number, null, undefined, and so on) for the same reason: these
schemas take no nested schema, so jsonValue can't combine with them.

Guarding _isConstructorPrototype against a throwing constructor accessor
exposed a wider gap: any enumerable own property whose getter throws
(constructor or otherwise, on an object or at an array index) was still
read directly while walking entries, so the exception escaped ~run
instead of becoming a validation issue. Wrap each item and entry read in
_runJsonValue and report it as an invalid, unreadable value instead of
letting it abort the whole parse.
This reverts 9deb625. That "Related > Schemas" list is a fixed
boilerplate block applied uniformly across leaf schema pages, not a
per-entry compatibility filter, so removing jsonValue only from these 20
pages broke the existing convention instead of fixing it.

Wrapping only the property read in try/catch left a gap: reading an
array's length again on a later iteration, or enumerating a hostile
Proxy's own keys, can itself throw outside that guard. Such a throw
skipped visiting.delete(input) entirely, so a later, non-cyclic sibling
reference to the same array or object was misreported as circular.

Wrap the whole per-container loop in try/finally so visiting is always
cleaned up, and catch any throw that escapes the per-item guard as a
whole-container issue instead of a partial walk.
