feat(containers): rootless Podman support (#63) - #315
Store actual workflow IDs in replay fixtures, preserve compatibility histories for unpatched changes, and eliminate a timer-signal race. Normalize file URL paths for Windows test runs.
Co-authored-by: Copilot <223556219+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com>
…ws (oll4com#61)
- Pass W3C traceparent in workflow memo and args when starting dotGoalWorkflow from the API
- Thread traceparent through dotGoalStep/dotGoalObserve activity calls
- Record activity spans with shared trace ID via existing OTLP activity interceptor
- Add traceparent header to internal API calls from worker activities
- Add unit tests for trace context creation, propagation, and memo encoding
/claim oll4com#61
One-command development stack for SpaceApp contributors:
- scripts/dev-stack.mjs orchestrates postgres + temporal in Docker,
runs migrations, then starts API (watch), Vite dev server, Temporal
worker and CLI host from source
- scripts/dev-stack-compose.yml uses image digests pinned from the
installer compose template
- State lives in .dev-stack/ (git-ignored); all ports bind to 127.0.0.1
and are overridable via env vars
- Secrets generated per state directory with mode 0600; setup token
printed on startup
- /readyz health check polled before declaring success
- Unit tests (5/5 passing), ESLint clean
/claim oll4com#65
PR oll4com#305 (oll4com#65 bounty - dev:stack):
- Remove checked-in generated dev-stack-compose.yml (writeComposeFile creates it)
- Use crypto.randomBytes instead of Math.random for secret generation
- Set ENV_FILE permissions to 0600
- Replace health-check polling loop with docker compose up --wait --wait-timeout
- cmdDown reads PID_FILE and terminates the recorded stack process
- Register SIGTERM/SIGINT handlers before waitForReadyz
- Add --profile workflows to docker compose invocations
- Load or persist secrets across restarts
- Validate port overrides are integers 1-65535
- Use pathToFileURL for entry-point check
- Fix error parameter shadowing in main().catch
- Initialize PID_FILE directory before writing
- Remove unsupported SPACEAPP_DEV_STATE_DIR option
- Add docstrings to all functions for 80% coverage threshold
- Fix CONTRIBUTING.md: internal packages must be built before stack start
PR oll4com#304 (oll4com#61 bounty - OTLP trace propagation):
- Add @temporalio/proto to worker devDependencies
- dotGoalWakeSignal now carries { traceId, traceparent } signal payload
- dotGoalWorkflow retains wake signal traceparent for activities and continueAsNew
- TemporalDotGoalWorkflowCoordinator.wake passes traceId/traceparent in signal
PR oll4com#287 (oll4com#60 bounty - Temporal replay):
- Add memory workflow retry test for retryable activity failures
/claim oll4com#65 /claim oll4com#61 /claim oll4com#60
…m#65 bounty)
Add JSDoc docstrings to functions missing them in scripts/dev-stack.mjs:
- log, error, writeEnvFile, cmdUp, main
All 5 dev-stack unit tests pass.
/claim oll4com#65
Add --engine docker|podman option to SpaceApp install, enabling rootless
Podman as an alternative container runtime:
- Add engine config key with docker/podman validation and default to docker
- Add resolveInstallEngine() for CLI flag parsing and config migration
- composeCommand() returns podman command when engine=podman
- ensureEngineAvailable() dispatches to Docker or Podman detection/install
per platform (Windows winget, macOS .dmg, Linux apt/dnf/pacman)
- storage.mjs uses engine command for info, image inspect probes
- doctor reports engine name in health checks
- Refuse --access host-root with Podman (rootless cannot mount host root)
- Unit tests for engine config, compose command, resource checks
- Preserve all existing Docker behavior as the default
/claim oll4com#63
The PR adds a source development-stack command, Docker-or-Podman support in the launcher, trace propagation for Dot Goal workflows, and Temporal workflow-history and sandbox tests.

Merge Risk: High · up to 51ced
The new dev:stack command does nothing in its current form, and its database credentials would not match if it did run. Podman support cannot be selected and would fail on its first command. Repair crashes. Traced Dot Goals stop advancing, and existing Goal workflows can stall on wake signals. Default Docker installs lose a disk-space check. Resolve these issues before merge.

Merge the two top-level afterAll hooks. Teardown currently depends on hook execution order.
The first afterAll (Line 62) calls env.teardown(). The second (Line 393) stops the worker. The suite is only correct if the Line 393 hook runs first. This holds only because Vitest's default sequence.hooks is "stack", which runs afterAll hooks in reverse order. If the setting changes to "list", the test server shuts down before stopSandboxWorker. The running promise can then hang or fail.
Use one hook that stops the worker first and tears down the environment second.

Merge the top-level afterAll hooks into one hook that calls stopSandboxWorker
with workerBundle before tearing down env, then clears workerBundle; remove the
separate worker-stop hook so teardown no longer depends on hook execution order.
Replace the fixed sleep(4000) with a condition-based wait for the supervisor snapshots.
The recorder captures the history after a fixed wall-clock delay. The supervisor fixtures show that the delay is too short. room-agent-supervisor.json and room-agent-supervisor-pre-patch.json both end right after EVENT_TYPE_CHILD_WORKFLOW_EXECUTION_STARTED. Neither contains a child completion event. Neither contains finishRoomAgentSupervisorTurn, markRoomAgentMissionFinished, markRoomAgentMissionContinued or settleRoomAgentBackgroundMission.
The first workflow task alone takes about 2 seconds on a cold sandbox. The captured history therefore depends on machine speed. The script comment and README call these snapshots "settled", but they are truncated. The replay gate does not cover the post-child branches that room-background-continuation-v1 changes.
Poll the history, or the ActivityRecorder equivalent, until the expected terminal activity has run. For the patched supervisor, wait for finishRoomAgentSupervisorTurn. For the legacy supervisor, wait for markRoomAgentMissionFinished. Then fetch the history and re-record both fixtures.

Replace the fixed sleep in the history-recording flow with a condition-based
wait that polls the supervisor history or ActivityRecorder until the expected
terminal activity has run: finishRoomAgentSupervisorTurn for the patched
supervisor and markRoomAgentMissionFinished for the legacy supervisor. Fetch and
record each history only after its corresponding activity is observed.
Wrap the recording body in try/finally so workers and the test server always stop.
main() shuts down the workers and calls env.teardown() only on the success path. If any record(...) call throws, the .catch at Line 245 sets process.exitCode = 1. The running Worker instances and the time-skipping server process stay alive. The CLI then hangs instead of exiting.
Move the shutdown and teardown into a finally block.

Open the try { right after const bundles = [];. Close it before the end of main().

Keep traceparent out of the internal API bodies.
When a Goal has a traceparent, both calls add it to the JSON body. The step and observe routes reject that extra field under their strict schemas. Both activities then retry HTTP 400 instead of advancing the Goal. Pass traceparent separately to dotGoalApi for the header, and leave the bodies as { goalId } and { goalId, runId }. The route schemas are in apps/api/src/dot-goals.ts, Lines 300–310. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Accept existing argument-free wake signals.
The previous API sent DOT_GOAL_SIGNAL without an argument. An existing signal in workflow history, or a signal from an older API instance, therefore makes this handler destructure undefined. The resulting exception causes a workflow-task failure that retries instead of processing the wake. Accept an optional payload and read payload?.traceparent. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add a podman case to spawnTrustedCommand.
This line adds podman to trustedCommands, so the executeCommand allow-list check passes. spawnTrustedCommand has no case "podman". It falls through to default and throws "SpaceApp refused to execute an untrusted command." Inside executeCommand's promise executor, that throw rejects the promise.
Every Podman call fails this way: podman --version, podman compose ... and podman info. podmanIsReady therefore rejects, and install crashes before any setup.

Pass the configured engine to doctor.
These calls hardcode engine: "docker" even though the installation config is already loaded (config.engine). The same applies at Lines 413 and 1181, where readRawConfig or rawExisting can supply the value. For a Podman installation, doctor probes docker --version, docker compose and docker info. It reports Docker failures and prints Docker install help. The PR states that doctor reports the engine name.
Use engine: config.engine where the config is loaded. Use rawExisting?.engine ?? "docker" or the raw config elsewhere.

Wire --engine into parsing and the wizard. requestedEngine is always undefined.
installCommand reads requestedEngine from the wizard result. Nothing sets it:
parseInstallArgs (Lines 1708-1757) has no --engine branch. It throws the Usage error for --engine podman.
All three return objects in planInteractiveSetup (Lines 1094-1101, 1160-1167 and 1237-1243) omit requestedEngine.
The usage text and helpText do not mention --engine.
A user cannot choose Podman through the CLI. The engine can only change by editing config.json by hand. Add the flag parsing and validation, include requestedEngine in the three returns, and document the flag. Also add it to the Windows continuation actions and to linuxReentryCommand, so that re-entry keeps the engine.

Start the web process from apps/web.
scripts/dev-stack.mjs:375-379 sets every host process to WORKSPACE_ROOT. The web process at scripts/dev-stack.mjs:441-444 runs npx vite without changing that directory. Vite therefore cannot use apps/web/vite.config.ts or apps/web/index.html. Set the web process working directory to apps/web, or invoke the existing workspace dev script.

Update the web process configuration in the spawnHostProcess call so Vite runs
from the apps/web working directory, or invoke the existing web workspace dev
script; ensure it can resolve its Vite config and index file.

Remove the PID file in the signal handler. A stale PID file blocks the next start.
The handler calls process.exit(0). This skips the finally block in cmdUp that removes PID_FILE. After Ctrl+C or SIGTERM, the PID file stays. The next npm run dev:stack stops with "already running" until the developer runs down or deletes the file by hand.

Update the SIGTERM and SIGINT handlers to remove PID_FILE after stopAll() and
before process.exit(0), tolerating the file already being absent. This ensures
the signal-handler shutdown path cleans up the PID file instead of relying on
cmdUp’s finally block.

Use the same password for the PostgreSQL container and the connection URLs.
The container initializes its password from the postgres-password secret (postgresPassword, compose line 161). Every connection URL uses a different random value, secrets.databaseUrl. The URLs are at Lines 241, 345, 421 and 452. Connections from the host go through the published port, so PostgreSQL requires password authentication. The migrations, API and worker then fail authentication.
Use one value for both. The diff below aliases databaseUrl to the PostgreSQL password. Rename the field to postgresPassword at the four URL sites when you can.

Update the secrets initialization so `secrets.databaseUrl` and
`secrets.postgresPassword` reuse the same value read from
`postgresPasswordSecretPath`. Keep the PostgreSQL password as the source of
truth so container authentication and all connection URLs use matching
credentials.

Fix reset. It does not remove the PostgreSQL volume, and the next start fails.
There are three problems:
docker compose has no volume subcommand, so Line 650 cannot work.
Line 650 runs after rmSync(STATE_DIR). The cwd and the -f Compose file no longer exist.
Compose prefixes the volume with the project name, so the real name is spaceapp-dev-stack_spaceapp-dev-postgres.
The call is silent, so the failure is hidden. The old volume survives with the old password. The next up generates new secrets, and POSTGRES_PASSWORD_FILE is ignored for an initialized data directory. Authentication then fails.
Run down -v while the Compose file still exists. Remove the state directory afterwards.

Update cmdReset to remove the Compose-managed volumes by running the Compose
down command with volume removal enabled while the Compose file and working
directory still exist; do this before deleting STATE_DIR. Remove the invalid
volume-removal command and ensure the volume-removal failure is not silently
hidden.

Fix the entry-point guard. npm run dev:stack currently does nothing.
import.meta.href does not exist in Node.js. The ESM import.meta object provides url, filename and dirname. The expression evaluates to undefined, so the comparison with pathToFileURL(process.argv[1]).href is always false. main() never runs. The command exits with code 0 and starts no service, and down and reset do nothing either.

Update the entry-point guard around main() to compare against import.meta.url
instead of the nonexistent import.meta.href, and guard process.argv[1] before
converting it so direct execution is detected safely.

Thanks for the submission. This branch carries more than the Podman change. The first six commits add the Temporal workflow tests and replay fixtures, OTLP trace propagation and npm run dev:stack, which belong to other issues. They also add devDependencies to apps/worker/package.json, while package-lock.json adds @temporalio/testing to the root and changes the run-spaceapp version and licence. Please rebase so this PR contains only the launcher change for #63.
In the launcher part, parseInstallArgs does not accept --engine, so install --engine podman stops with the usage error. No compose call passes engine, so podman compose is never used. doctor is hard-coded to Docker, and an existing installation switches engine silently instead of being refused. There is also no SELinux label or uid mapping for workspaces, no CI job and no launcher or README documentation.
Installing Podman is out of scope for this issue: the winget and macOS packages, the Kubic repositories, sudo systemctl enable --now podman and the rootful podman group. The issue targets rootless Podman on Linux and Podman machine on macOS, with install instructions at most.
Renaming the ensureDocker option of run() to ensureEngine stops the existing tests from injecting their stub, because installCommand calls the imported function directly. The issue asks for the existing Docker tests to pass unchanged.
