Connect API, Temporal workflows and activity attempts in OTLP traces - #299
API-started work now produces connected HTTP, workflow, child-workflow and activity-attempt spans. All three workers register deterministic tracing interceptors and replay-suppressed sinks. Continue-as-new and background continuations carry span links. Attributes are allowlisted, collector failures preserve execution results, and worker shutdown flushes the bounded exporter. No tracing SDK was added; @temporalio/testing is the only new development dependency.
Validation
The complete fork validationpassed on exact PR head 5979fb3abdcc7e404edc41e8118bd3c6c8a25916, using the repository's pinned Node version:
npm run check
npm test: API 3,627 passed / 17 skipped; web 3,930 passed; worker 236 passed; shared-package and script suites passed.
npm run build
npm run pack:dry-run -w run-spaceapp
The observability fault-injection suite also passed separately. The API Vitest subpath alias resolves the import regression without changing assertions.
Hygiene preflight and whitespace checks passed. The fork run executes the unchanged check/test/build commands on the submitted source. It excludes the maintainer-owned export provenance pipeline, as allowed for external PRs by issue #61; it is not an upstream check approval.
Execution evidence
A separate passing run exercised a real loopback HTTP POST /api/turns, the production TemporalTurnStarter, production dummyTurnWorkflow, and both production dummy activities against a real Temporal test server and Jaeger all-in-one. Jaeger returned four connected spans in trace bdaa1c6268f8e01434d8e967f1f9b579. Assertions verify the HTTP → workflow → activity parentage and that the prompt sentinel is absent from exported payloads. The run log contains the captured OTLP batches and Jaeger response. The fork-only evidence harness is outside this PR's diff.
That run uses in-memory API storage and the built-in dummy runtime; no paid model-provider turn was performed. The screenshot below shows the same captured OTLP spans loaded into the local Jaeger viewer, with the HTTP request, production dummy workflow, and two activity spans connected in one trace.
The integration suite additionally checks retries, child parents, continuation links, redaction, replay with zero exports, replay of pre-instrumentation history, and collector outage behavior. The existing screenshot below shows its actual exported spans using a synthetic HTTP route, real Temporal execution, and stub activities; it is not the newer production-route trace.
AI-assisted contribution submitted by Yusef Atteyih with authorized DCO sign-off. Implementation and automated validation were performed with AI assistance; no unobserved personal testing is asserted. Please assess the disclosed dummy-runtime proof against the manual bounty criterion.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added optional trace export for API requests, workflows, and activities.
Trace context now carries across child workflows and background continuations, with links connecting related operations.
Exported spans include filtered metadata; trace export failures do not affect processing results, and replay does not generate duplicate traces.
Documentation
Added setup guidance for configuring an optional OTLP trace collector, including URL requirements and export behavior.

Walkthrough
The PR adds Temporal workflow spans to the main and memory workers, extends activity trace propagation, and links background continuations to their source traces. It also updates OTLP span-link serialization, tests, package exports, and observability documentation.

The API returns the registry’s traceparent unchanged. Worker helpers extract and validate trace context and filter attributes. Dummy-turn inputs accept an optional traceLink, and the contracts package exports the observability subpath.
Workflow interceptors derive trace context, record workflow spans, and propagate context to activities and child workflows. All three workers configure workflow tracing. Tests cover span relationships, replay behavior, disabled tracing, and exporter failures.
Activity propagation and continuation links apps/worker/src/activity-observability.ts, apps/worker/src/room-background-continuation.ts, apps/worker/tests/activity-observability.test.ts, apps/worker/tests/room-background-continuation.test.ts, apps/worker/tests/room-continuation-fixture.ts
Activity spans use propagated trace context and filtered attributes. Background continuations retain a link to a valid source trace and receive a new traceparent. Tests cover continuation retries and exporter failures.
OTLP links, lifecycle, and validation packages/runtime/src/otlp-span-exporter.ts, packages/runtime/tests/otlp-span-exporter.test.ts, apps/worker/tests/memory-maintenance-worker.test.ts, docs/configuration-reference.md, docs/quality/observability.md
The exporter serializes valid span links and schedules queue draining asynchronously. Tests cover exporter flushes, queue limits, and worker shutdown. Documentation describes trace export configuration, propagation, replay behavior, and coverage.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #61 coding requirements are met by the reviewed changes. All three worker entrypoints configure the shared OTLP exporter and workflow tracing. The exporter retains bounded queuing, drop statistics, timeouts, failure isolation, link serialization, and the idle-flush fix. The workflow and activity interceptors cover API parentage, retries, child workflows, continue-as-new links, background links, replay suppression, and allowlisted attributes. workflow-tracing.test.ts uses a local HTTP collector and Temporal test environment and checks these behaviors, including legacy replay and collector outage handling. The required documentation is updated. @temporalio/testing is test support named by issue #61, and no tracing SDK was added. The unconfirmed full-suite rerun and omitted production manual turn are not concrete unmet coding requirements.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain within issue #61. The API traceparent correction supports API-to-worker parentage. The shared exporter link and flush changes support worker export. The maintenance-worker shutdown fix preserves exporter cleanup on worker failure. The contract field, tests, package export, and documentation support tracing propagation, validation, or operation. No CLI or Browser Host spans, metrics or log export, sampling configuration, or trace-ID database columns were added.

Update the stale "Workflow code is unchanged" and replay statements.
This PR adds apps/worker/src/workflow-tracing.ts as a workflow interceptor module. The worker bundles it when an exporter is configured. The new ## Temporal OTLP traces section describes this behavior. These older statements now contradict it:
Lines 236-238 say the workflow bundle only gains the optional contract field.
Lines 242-249 say no file the workflow bundle imports was changed.
Lines 223-224 say activity spans carry the activity type, outcome and attempt only.
The replay claims matter to operators who decide whether to run scripts/temporal-replay-check.mjs before deploy. Revise these passages to match the new tracing behavior, or point them to the new section.

When worker.run() rejects, execution skips await spans?.close() and enters the outer catch. The exporter therefore does not perform its final flush, so accepted spans can remain queued during worker shutdown.

Ensure the maintenance-worker cleanup runs whether `worker.run()` succeeds or
rejects by moving `stopReloadWatch()` and `await spans?.close()` into a
`finally` block around `worker.run()`. Keep the existing outer error handling
intact.
