Fixes #12486
Clause-②: no (narrowing)

Half 2 of objectui#12464. The page renderer drops its kind === 'jsx' arm now that objectui resolves @objectstack/spec 18.0.0-next.2 (built from objectstack e5136ff10f, which carries c5dd7fce30), as triage's ruling 6190403616 set the condition and the unlock 6215013185 measured it met.

The narrowing (the claim's Clause-② reason)

@object-ui/components' PageRenderer used to compile a node's source when its kind was html or jsx. It now compiles it for html only.

  • What a raw node loses. A page node that still carries kind: 'jsx' is no longer compiled. It takes the template / page-type layout path that a node with no kind takes: it draws its children or regions and never reads source. Such a node can only come from code built past the types: PageNodeSchema.kind and its zod face have refused jsx since objectui#12464.
  • Why a served page cannot carry jsx. next.2's COMPILED_PAGE_KINDS is ['html'], its page parse refuses jsx by name (the save door answers 422, os validate reports it), and spec 18's stored-row rehydration rewrites a stored jsx page to html before it is served.
  • Levelled minor on @object-ui/components, per this repo's version policy. One CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER review is owed before ready, per the claim.

What changed

  1. packages/components/src/renderers/layout/page.tsx: the arm is gone. The read of schema.kind is the authoring type again (const kind = schema.kind, no widening annotation), and the comment above getJsxManifest names kind:'html'.
  2. packages/types/src/zod/layout.zod.ts: comments only. The .extract comment no longer describes the pre-next.2 state, and the list of re-attached spec checks no longer names jsx (next.2's checkPageSourceCompleteness reads html and react; COMPILED_PAGE_KINDS is html). No code line in the file moved.
  3. packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/ResourceEditPage.pageRequiresStamp-11357.test.tsx: the server double reads the installed @objectstack/spec/ui COMPILED_PAGE_KINDS (through an async vi.hoisted import) instead of its hand copy of html and jsx. The card named the file under views/; it lives under views/metadata-admin/.
  4. New pin: packages/components/src/renderers/layout/__tests__/page-kind-jsx-not-compiled-12486.test.tsx.
  5. .changeset/12486-drop-page-kind-jsx-arm.md: @object-ui/components: minor, stating the narrowing in words.

What a stray kind: 'jsx' node draws: the decision, on the four axes

The options: A, the renderer's existing path for a kind it does not name (template / page type, as for an absent kind); B, a named error panel for jsx; C, a generic loud panel for any undeclared kind.

  • Real business need (measured). No producer reaches the renderer with jsx. On objectui main at 4be76e030, the only kind: 'jsx' writer outside CHANGELOGs and pending changesets is the retired-value pin in packages/types (control: the same grep finds kind: 'html' in many files). On objectstack main at 7a6ba03, only the test fixtures of the conversion and refusal machinery write it. B and C serve no measured case.
  • Long-term soundness. A keeps the renderer reading declared kinds only. B fossilises a retired value in the consumer and needs its own removal later.
  • Keeping AI from writing wrong metadata. The loud refusal already sits at the contract: the spec parse, the save door's 422, the TS face, and the zod face behind objectui validate. A adds no consumer tolerance and re-honours nothing. B would be a second, consumer-side spelling of a refusal the contract owns.
  • No scope creep. B and C add surface for a retired value, and immediate retirement says no.

Implemented: A. The trade-off, stated plainly: at render, A is quiet (the source is not read); the refusal lives at authoring and save.

Evidence (all at head bc88318)

  • Closure build, pnpm exec turbo run build --filter='@object-ui/app-shell^...' --concurrency=2: Tasks: 28 successful, 28 total, exit 0 (3m0s on a shared box).
  • Console build as CI runs it, VITE_BASE_PATH=/console/ pnpm --filter @object-ui/console exec vite build: exit 0, apps/console/dist/index.html present (a 100.8s build on a shared box).
  • pnpm --filter type-check: @object-ui/components 0, @object-ui/types 0, @object-ui/app-shell 0. Both edited test files are inputs of their package's tsconfig.test.json (read with --listFilesOnly).
  • vitest, root form: Test Files 88 passed (88), Tests 2192 passed (2192). The set: packages/components/src/renderers/layout/, the app-shell requires-stamp test, 25 components tests that render page kinds, and 58 packages/types/src tests that name jsx or kind.
  • Ablation (put the arm back as if (kind === 'html' || kind === 'jsx')), through objectstack's scripts/ablation-replace.mjs: anchor hits 1 to 0, blob b2b94175 to ee18452c. The pin went 2 failed | 1 passed (subject and same-path red, control green), and @object-ui/components type-check went red with TS2367 on the re-added comparison, because the authoring-type read refuses it. Restore: blob after restore equals the HEAD blob b2b94175, and git diff HEAD is empty.
  • Gates: check:changeset-claims 0, changeset:check 0, check:test-path-roots 0, check:spec-symbols 0, check-changeset-presence 0, check:new-line-citations 0, check:control-bytes 0. eslint on the 4 changed source files: 0 errors (9 warnings, all on untouched lines). check-governed-queue-guard --test: NOT GOVERNED.
  • Not run locally: the whole packages/app-shell/ suite and the full pnpm test; the CI shards run them.

Acceptance notes

  • The pending .changeset/12464-retire-page-kind-jsx.md kept a paragraph (it started Unchanged:) saying the renderer still renders a stored jsx page as html. This PR makes that false, so the seat's REWORK round 1 widened the file surface to that changeset's prose, and commit 240a30f9 deleted the paragraph (frontmatter untouched). The supersede sentence in this PR's own changeset was dropped as redundant.
  • objectstack's packages/spec/liveness/page.json, in the source row's note, cites the renderer's kind:'jsx' branch. After this PR that branch is the kind:'html' one. Prose drift in a ledger note that no gate reads; no carrier; not filed.

…ml (objectui#12486)

@objectstack/spec 18 retired the page kind jsx, and objectui now resolves
18.0.0-next.2, whose COMPILED_PAGE_KINDS is html alone and whose stored-row
rehydration rewrites a stored jsx page to html. So the renderer's
kind === 'jsx' arm goes, and the kind read is the authoring type again, with
no widening annotation. A raw node that still carries jsx takes the
template / page-type path a node with no kind takes.

- page.tsx: the arm, the widened read and the getJsxManifest comment.
- layout.zod.ts: comments that named jsx as live.
- the app-shell requires-stamp server double reads the installed spec's
COMPILED_PAGE_KINDS instead of a hand copy that still listed jsx.
- a render pin: a jsx node paints nothing from its source and draws what an
absent-kind node draws; html still compiles.

REWORK round 1 → PR #12679 · domain:ui seat 1 · session_011K9g23W67dy2zwnyzaoB6o · 2026-10-16T13:28Z

Reviewed at head bc88318. Accepted as reviewed: items 1–5 of the card; the four-axis decision (option A: a raw kind: 'jsx' node takes the renderer's existing path for a kind it does not name, with no arm that honours or refuses it); the server double now reads the installed COMPILED_PAGE_KINDS; the new pin and its ablation; and the corrected test path (metadata-admin/ResourceEditPage.pageRequiresStamp-11357.test.tsx).

Patch round on the same claim (6216091050), same dev, same branch:

  1. A pending changeset goes false with this PR. .changeset/12464-retire-page-kind-jsx.md, the paragraph that begins "Unchanged:", says @object-ui/components' page renderer still renders a stored kind: 'jsx' page as html. After this PR it does not. Both changesets publish into the same CHANGELOG. Delete that one paragraph, frontmatter untouched. check-changeset-overwrite.mjs records it as a deliberate correction, and this PR's own changeset already states the new behaviour.
    • File surface widened for this item only: .changeset/12464-retire-page-kind-jsx.md (prose).

Noted, not asked: the objectstack packages/spec/liveness/page.json note citing the kind:'jsx' branch is another repository's prose ledger.

… (objectui#12486)

The pending objectui#12464 changeset said the page renderer still renders a
stored kind jsx page as html. This branch drops that arm, so the paragraph
is deleted; this PR's own changeset states the new behaviour.

…12486)

The objectui#12464 paragraph it pointed at was deleted in the previous
commit, so the sentence named nothing.

Live E2E (informational) red on ea56ec6: not this PR's · domain:ui seat 1 · session_011K9g23W67dy2zwnyzaoB6o · 2026-10-16T13:32Z

Job 116997748188 dies in e2e/live/ci/start-backend.sh before any spec runs, on the same cold-cache npm crash (Cannot read properties of null (reading 'edgesOut')) that main's own bump PR #12648 hit. objectui#12649 tracks it; no fix exists yet, and the crash reproduces on a cold cache, so the seat takes no re-run. The full reasoning is on PR #12656 (6214488000). The lane is informational and blocks no merge; every other check is judged on this head as usual.

The two .changeset/*.md files are prose faces, judged under ② only; the lane seat's ACCEPT owns them.

Reviewed read-only against card objectui#12486 (body and every comment), its parent objectui#12464 with triage ruling 6190403616 and the unlock 6215013185, the PR body and file list, the net diff of the head against its merge-base with main (4be76e03), and the check-runs on the head. Neither the dispatch order nor the dispatching seat's conclusions were inputs.

① Derived judgments

The arm, and what the renderer now does — right. On main the PageRenderer compiled a node's source when kind was html or jsx. At this head the one remaining compile arm is kind === 'html'. A raw node that still carries kind: 'jsx' is a kind the renderer does not name: it falls through to resolveTemplate and then the page-type switch (home / app / utility / record), exactly as a node with kind: 'full', kind: 'slotted' or no kind does, and its source is never read. No alias, no ?? fallback and no named refusal arm were added in the consumer, which is the rule for an internal contract whose refusal already sits at the producer. The pin's same path row holds the two renders DOM-identical, so the fall-through is measured, not assumed. The getJsxManifest comment now names kind:'html'.

Can any producer still hand it jsx — no, each one checked.

  • Served pages: the resolved spec at the head is 18.0.0-next.2 for every importer in pnpm-lock.yaml (no 18.0.0-next.1 version line remains; packages/types and packages/app-shell range ^18.0.0-next.2, packages/components range ^18.0.0-next.1, all resolving next.2). In the published next.2 dist, PageSchema.kind is enumWithRetiredValues(['full', 'slotted', 'html', 'react'], PAGE_KIND_RETIRED_GUIDANCE): jsx is refused at parse with a prescription naming html, so the save door, os validate and defineStack refuse it before a renderer sees it. COMPILED_PAGE_KINDS is ['html'].
  • Stored rows: the dist's applyConversionsToStoredItem calls applyConversions with includeRetired: true, so the retired page-kind-jsx-to-html entry (retiredFromLoadPath: true, retiredAfter: 17.7.0) still rewrites a stored kind: 'jsx' page to html on the rehydration seam. That is the ADR-0087 addendum rule read in the shipped code; the server's call of that seam is objectstack's and outside this review's inputs.
  • The console sample: apps/console/src/sdui-jsx-preview.tsx authors kind: 'html' at the head (objectui#12464 half 1).
  • The types: packages/types/src/layout.ts declares kind?: 'full' | 'slotted' | 'html' | 'react'; the zod face extracts those four from the spec's own enum, which at next.2 is the identity. A kind: 'jsx' literal does not compile and does not parse.
  • Writers in the tree: a PCRE grep of packages/ and apps/ source at the head for a jsx page kind finds only the retired-value pin in packages/types/src/__tests__/page-kind-jsx-retired-12464.test.ts and the new pin's own comments; the control kind: 'html' hits 55 files. The dev's measurement is reproduced.

The schema.kind type read — sound. const kind = schema.kind is 'full' | 'slotted' | 'html' | 'react' | undefined; both comparisons ('react', 'html') are members of the union, and a re-added 'jsx' comparison is a TS2367, which is the compile-time guard the widening annotation on main existed to defeat. Type Check is green on the head.

The narrowing is complete and nothing else narrows or widens. The only behaviour change is the one arm. layout.zod.ts moves no code line: both hunks are comment text, and the re-attached-checks list now matches the dist (checkPageSourceCompleteness reads html and react; checkPageRequiresKind reads COMPILED_PAGE_KINDS, which is html). The app-shell server double reads the installed spec's COMPILED_PAGE_KINDS through await vi.hoisted(async () => await import('@objectstack/spec/ui')) instead of a hand copy of html and jsx; @objectstack/spec is a declared dependency of @object-ui/app-shell and ./ui is an exported subpath, so the import resolves, and reading an installed dependency is not a cross-package source input. The readonly unknown[] view of the tuple is a test-local type widening so a stored kind of any value can be looked up; it reaches no shipped code.

The pin. subject is red while the arm exists (the compiled heading would paint), same path is red while the arm exists (the arm ignores children) and control is green in both worlds, so the file cannot pass on a renderer that compiles nothing. It renders through ComponentRegistry.get('home', 'ui'), which page.tsx registers to PageRenderer, and imports the renderers at module scope, not in a hook. The dev's ablation (arm restored, pin 2 failed | 1 passed, components type-check red on TS2367, blob restored byte-equal) is consistent with that reading.

Check-runs on the head. Every required check is green: Type Check, Test and all 16 shards, Test (dist pins), Build & E2E, Lint, Repo Gates, Changeset Bump Policy, Changeset Declaration, Changeset Claim Re-read, Changeset Fixed Group Check, Changeset Overwrite Report, Line Citation Gate, Governed Surface Queue Guard (not governed), Bundle Analysis, Build Docs. Live E2E (informational) is red: judged from the run itself, the job failed at the step Start ObjectStack backend (published packages) about a minute in, every spec step after it (Build console, Run live E2E allowlist) was skipped, and the artefact step found no backend.log, which is the shape of the cold-cache npm install crash tracked as objectui#12649 that also hit main's own PR #12648; this diff touches no e2e/, pin or backend file, and the lane is informational. The step log body itself was not retrievable through this session's proxy, so that judgment rests on the step roster, the duration and the missing artefact, not on the log text.

Drift. Between the merge-base 4be76e03 and main at review time (efa9cb4f) no touched path changed; the PR is mergeable.

② Semver level

  • .changeset/12486-drop-page-kind-jsx-arm.md: @object-ui/components: minor, with the breaking semantics stated in the body and the migration spelled FROM kind: 'jsx' TO kind: 'html' with the one-line fix. That is this repo's version policy exactly: a breaking change in the fixed group is levelled minor, never major (check-changeset-no-major is the mechanical half, green on the head). The published surface the diff changes is one renderer behaviour in @object-ui/components; nothing in @object-ui/types changes behaviour (comments only) and the app-shell edit is a test. Changeset Declaration is green. The fixed group (40 packages, components and types included) versions together, so one entry is the right count.
  • .changeset/12464-retire-page-kind-jsx.md: the pending entry's Unchanged: paragraph said the renderer still renders a stored jsx page as html. This PR makes that false in the same release, so deleting the paragraph (commit 240a30f9) is the semver-face correction a reader of the shipped CHANGELOG needs; the head's second commit drops the now-redundant supersede sentence from the 12486 entry. Both edits are prose and change no level.
  • Clause-②: no on the PR body and the claim is right: no published type, schema or export changes; the narrowing is of renderer behaviour, which is why the card owes this tier of review rather than the declaration tier. The line carries no (narrowing) arm; see ③.

③ Boundary flags

Dev report 6216524189 on the card: open_questions is empty; two deviations and two out_of_scope_findings.

  • Deviation, the test path: the card and claim name packages/app-shell/src/views/ResourceEditPage.pageRequiresStamp-11357.test.tsx; the file lives under views/metadata-admin/. Same file, the card's intent met; answered.
  • Deviation, commit trailers and footer: the model-free trailer pair and the session-URL footer follow objectui's own AGENTS.md; no contract content; answered.
  • Out-of-scope finding, the 12464 changeset's Unchanged: paragraph: closed in this PR by commit 240a30f9, authored under the adopting seat's session after the dev's report. The dev stopped at the surface boundary and reported, which is the right act. The edit sits outside the claim's declared file surface (one .changeset/12486-*.md); the seat widens the surface on record when it accepts, as the parent's seat did for layout.zod.ts. The PR body's Acceptance notes still describe the pre-head state (the changeset "states that it supersedes that paragraph", and offers the deletion as the seat's alternative); a prose refresh is the lane seat's at ACCEPT.
  • Out-of-scope finding, objectstack packages/spec/liveness/page.json source row note citing the renderer's kind:'jsx' branch: escalated as a one-line prose follow-up for the objectstack domain:spec lane. No gate reads that note's text (scripts/check-platform-checklist.mjs consumes the ledger's kinds, not its notes), so it carries nothing here and is not a verdict input.
  • Flag raised by this review, the Clause-②: spelling: the PR body's line is Clause-②: no with the narrowing declared in the section below it, and the claim carries the reason on a separate Clause-② reason: line. The record recogniser routes the narrowing face off the (narrowing) arm on that line (--paths refused to decide a face and asked for it), so as spelled a later reader classifies this PR's owed review as the declaration tier. This record serves the higher tier regardless, and the PR is not governed, so nothing mechanical is blocked; the one-word fix is to spell the PR body line Clause-②: no (narrowing), a prose surface for the lane seat. Not verdict-changing.
  • PR body evidence is cited at bc88318; the head differs from it by the two changeset-only commits (four deleted lines). The check-runs on the head are the gate verdicts and are read above.

What was reviewed:

  • Head ea56ec6f5c, against objectui#12486 (half 2 of objectui#12464, triage ruling 6190403616, unlock 6215013185).
  • The claim 6216091050 (Clause-②: no, a narrowing) and the dev's report 6216524189 on the card.
  • The contract review of record, 6217074684 (CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER, an isolated subagent, PASS, same head).
  1. Shape.
    • Fixes #12486 is the first line and the only closing keyword. The body's second line now reads Clause-②: no (narrowing), the one-word prose fix the review asked for, so the recogniser routes the owed review to the narrowing face. The assignee is os-tesla.
    • 6 files, +133/−22:
      • the page.tsx arm;
      • layout.zod.ts, comments only;
      • the app-shell server double, which now reads the installed COMPILED_PAGE_KINDS;
      • the new pin;
      • this card's changeset;
      • the two-line deletion in .changeset/12464-retire-page-kind-jsx.md.
    • That last file was widened onto the surface on record by this seat's REWORK round 1 (6216546610), so the review's "widen at ACCEPT" is already met. It is a prose deletion, frontmatter untouched, recorded by Changeset Overwrite Report.
    • The surface is NOT governed, at 155 changed lines.
  2. The narrowing.
    • The one compile arm left is kind === 'html'. A raw kind: 'jsx' node takes the path of any kind the renderer does not name, and its source is never read. No alias, no ??, no consumer-side refusal arm.
    • Every producer is checked closed in the review: the lockfile resolves 18.0.0-next.2 for every importer, and the spec refuses jsx at parse. Stored rows are rewritten at rehydration. The console sample, the TS face and the zod face all read html.
    • A re-added 'jsx' comparison is TS2367.
  3. Gates (check-runs pinned to this head).
    • 32 success and 3 skipped by design, including Type Check, Test with all 16 shards, Test (dist pins), Build & E2E, Lint, Repo Gates, every changeset check and Bundle Analysis.
    • Live E2E (informational) is the base-red npm crash, objectui#12649 (6216622977).
    • The dev's ablation: arm restored gives the pin 2 failed | 1 passed and components type-check red on TS2367; the restored blob is byte-equal.
  4. Semver. @object-ui/components: minor, with the breaking behaviour and the FROM kind: 'jsx' TO kind: 'html' migration in the body. That is objectui's policy for a breaking change in the fixed group.
  5. Accepted notes, no carrier. objectstack's packages/spec/liveness/page.json source row note still says kind:'jsx' branch. That is prose in a ledger note no gate reads, recorded in the PR's Acceptance notes and not filed.
  6. Landing.
    • Ready, then auto-merge into the merge queue.
    • After the merge: verify by content, close the card through Fixes, strip pm:dispatched.
    • objectui#12464's half 2 is then done.
