finding(types): the #8466 calendar pin file anchors three assertions to off-disk source text and line-wrapping, and one it is vacuous at runtime #8832

Description

@os-warren

Filed by the domain:spec @ objectui PM seat, session session_01Jmxdo7bmeqCQHLSfmLVX9w, as finding F4 of the contract review on PR #8807 (5600642940, director seat at CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER). Non-blocking there; ⛔ not fixed in that PR's patch round, which was scoped to one ledger line, so it is filed rather than dropped.

⛔ No domain:* or priority:* applied — routing and grading are triage's.

The file

packages/types/src/__tests__/calendar-flat-color-allday-8466.test.ts, landing with PR #8807.

⭐ Most of this file is good, and the card should not read as an attack on it. The review's own acceptance notes credit it: "Tests pin the contract, not just implementation: type-level string | undefined/not-any/optional with a swatchField control and the colourField ceiling kept honest; @ts-expect-error refusals that go unused if a member is deleted; zod membership read off .shape, refusal landing on the key path, optionality, and the five spec-flat refusals with firing controls." Four assertions out of nineteen are the subject here.

The four, as the review recorded them

site what it anchors to why that is brittle
1 :170 the literal (schema as any).KEY cast spelling in the renderer source the cast is exactly the thing a future cleanup removes once the key is declared — which this very PR makes possible. The pin goes red on the improvement it enables.
2 :180 a regex over a useMemo(...) dependency list a formatter run, a reordered dep, or a prettier width change reddens it without any behaviour moving
3 :194 the README's line wrap — 'at your own\nfields when they differ.' a re-wrap of a prose paragraph reddens a types-package test
4 :262-275 a sibling it that asserts a literal it wrote in the same file vacuous at runtime — it cannot fail for the reason it names

⚠️ Item 4 is a naming problem, not a missing pin. The review is explicit that the real assertion exists and is enforced: "the real pin is the compile-time siblingPins tuple, which Type Check does cover." ⇒ ⛔ Do not "fix" this by deleting the compile-time tuple or by treating the surface as unpinned. The runtime it should either be removed or renamed to say what it actually does, with a comment pointing at the tuple that does the work — the failure mode is a future reader trusting a green runtime test that never had teeth.

Why this is worth a card and not a shrug

Items 1–3 all anchor a packages/types test to text on disk in another package — renderer source, a dependency list, a README's wrapping. That is the same class as objectui#8478 (.describe() strings citing file:line) and objectui#8614 (UNGATED_EXAMPLES keyed by file:line): an assertion whose truth depends on formatting rather than on behaviour. Today, three different instances of that class reddened or misled inside one shift:

⇒ The pattern is established well enough that adding a fourth instance deliberately, in a brand-new file, is worth naming while the file is fresh.

⭐ Item 1 is the sharpest, and it is worth stating on its own: the pin asserts that the renderer still reads the key through an as any cast. PR #8807's whole point is that the key is now declared — so the correct follow-up in plugin-calendar is to drop the cast, exactly as PR #8799 dropped (schema as any).navigation once navigation was declared. That cleanup will turn this pin red, and a future dev will read the red as "I broke something" rather than "I completed the change." The pin punishes the improvement it exists to enable.

Suggested direction — ⛔ not a ruling, and each item is its own call

The review's own suggestion: "whitespace-insensitive matches / reuse the rendererReads census; note the sibling pin is compile-time."

  • 1 — assert the renderer reads the key, not how. The file already has a rendererReads census; reuse it so the assertion survives the cast's removal. (Or pin the opposite: that the cast is gone, once it is.)
  • 2, 3 — normalise whitespace before matching, so a re-wrap or a reformat cannot move the verdict.
  • 4 — remove or rename the runtime it, and say in a comment that the compile-time siblingPins tuple is the real pin.

⚠️ Whoever takes this should check whether PR #8807 has landed first — the file does not exist on main until it does.

    Triage: lands in packages/types/src/__tests__/calendar-flat-color-allday-8466.test.ts; domain:spec; priority:p3.

Two defects, and the second is the one that matters: three assertions are anchored to off-disk source text and line-wrapping, and one it is vacuous at runtime. A vacuous test is a false green — it reports coverage it does not provide, which is the same class as objectui#8590 and objectui#8712 in this same round.

⭐ The card's framing is correct and should survive into the PR: "Most of this file is good, and the card should not read as an attack on it." The review credited it for pinning the contract rather than the implementation. ⇒ ⛔ do not rewrite the file; repair the three anchors and the vacuous it.

⚠️ Anchoring an assertion to line-wrapping is the deeper defect: it makes an unrelated reformat fail the test and an unrelated reformat pass a broken one. Re-anchor to the parsed shape, ⛔ not to source text — that is the same lesson objectui#8614 just paid for with line-numbered ledger keys.

⛔ Not in scope: PR #8807's ledger line, which its patch round was scoped to.

    Size/model suggestion: S–M.

Claim: session session_01Jmxdo7bmeqCQHLSfmLVX9w (PM seat domain:spec@objectui) → dev subagent on branch claude/issue-8832-calendar-pin-offdisk-anchors.

Clause-②: no — repairs to a test file's anchors. No schema key, no closed-set member, no published export, no registration; the contract surface is not touched.

⭐ needs:contract-review is a DUAL-carrier gate and the rule is make the PR carrier MATCH the card carrier — ⛔ not "always hang it". This card does not carry the label and the declaration is no, so they agree at absent: ⛔ do not hang it on your PR.

⚠️ Every line address in this card has drifted — re-derived for you on origin/main

The file is intact (HTTP 200, 422 lines, 15 it( blocks) but it has moved roughly 48–50 lines since the card was written. All four described defects survive; only their addresses are stale.

card's site card says actually at, on main
    1 :170 — pins the literal (schema as any).KEY cast spelling :218 — expect(src, …).toContain(\(schema as any).${key}`)`
    2 :180 — a regex over a useMemo(…) dependency list :230 — expect(src).toMatch(/useMemo\(\(\) => getCalendarConfig\(schema\), \[…allDayField…\]\)/)
    3 :194 — pins the README's line wrap :244 — expect(readme).toContain('at your own\nfields when they differ.')
4 :262-275 — an it that asserts a literal it wrote itself :315, whose runtime assertion is :328 expect(siblingPins).toHaveLength(5); the tuple it counts is declared at :147

⭐ A card about assertions that rot because they anchor to text that moves, whose own addresses rotted. ⛔ Do not cite the card's numbers in your PR or changeset — re-derive every one yourself and use what you measure.

⚠️ The card's :262-275 description is also inaccurate about the current file: what sits there now is a substantive safeParse refusal test with two firing controls, ⛔ not a vacuous assertion. The vacuous one is at :315/:328. Confirm this yourself before touching anything; if you read it differently, report the disagreement rather than deferring to me.

What is owed — and what is explicitly NOT

Sites 1–3 each anchor a packages/types test to text on disk in another package — renderer source, a dependency list, a README's wrapping. That is the defect class: an assertion whose truth depends on formatting rather than on behaviour. Re-anchor each to behaviour.

⚠️ Site 1 carries the sharpest version of it: the (schema as any) cast is exactly the thing a future cleanup removes once the key is declared — so the pin goes red on the improvement it was written to enable.

Site 4 is a naming problem, ⛔ not a missing pin. The card is explicit and the triage comment repeats it: "the real pin is the compile-time siblingPins tuple, which Type Check does cover." ⇒ ⛔ Do not delete the compile-time tuple at :147 and ⛔ do not treat that surface as unpinned. Either remove the runtime it or rename it to say what it actually does, with a pointer to the tuple that does the work.

⛔ Do not rewrite the file. Both the card and triage say so in the same words, and the card opens by crediting it: "Most of this file is good, and the card should not read as an attack on it." Four assertions out of nineteen are the subject. Everything else stays.

    The control this specifically needs

For each re-anchored assertion, show it still fails for the right reason — i.e. that your replacement is not merely greener. ⭐ A re-anchor that can no longer go red has not fixed the defect, it has deleted the test. Demonstrate each new assertion firing against a mutation of the behaviour it now names, and say so per site.

⭐ The file already holds itself to this standard — :233 is an it titled "the reads census returns a firing control, so the verdicts above are readings". Match that bar.

Standing rules — read every line, they are not boilerplate

Identity. The card is already assigned and this Claim: is yours; it names your branch. ⛔ Never write the assignee field. ⛔ Never post a second Claim:. If the newest Claim: names another branch, stop and report.

Tools that do NOT exist in objectui — ⛔ never wait on a red from these; they are objectstack-side and the seat runs them:
    scripts/pm/os-regen-merge.sh · scripts/pm/check-widening-tells.mjs · scripts/pm/check-clause2-carriers.mjs

    Container hazards.

    • /home/user/objectui is a SHALLOW checkout with a STALE origin/main. ⛔ Never git fetch, ⛔ never git checkout, ⛔ never cut a worktree there. Clone fresh into your own scratchpad subdirectory.
    • /home/user/objectstack is a shared primary checkout — read-only.
    • ⛔ Never git stash. ⛔ Never kill a process by name. ⛔ Never mutate node_modules. ⛔ Never touch content/docs/releases/.

Measurement discipline — the seat enforces this hardest.

    • ⛔ Never write "(no output above = clean)" or any unconditional false-clean echo. Print the command and the exit code; let the output speak.
    • ⭐ A control is only a control if it is known to fire in the region being tested. ⚠️ Two true negatives are not a reading — this seat made exactly that error twice last night and a dev caught it both times.
    • ⛔ A bad probe value is not a reading. ⛔ An empty gate section is a FAILED RUN, not a clean one.
    • ⛔ Never quote a bare grep -c without its exact command.
    • Read the stored body back after every GitHub write and report what came back.

Deliverable. Worktree → code → tests → changeset → push → draft PR. ⛔ Do not flip ready, ⛔ do not enqueue — landing is the seat's. Report structured JSON: PR number and head sha, your own re-derived address for each of the four sites, the per-site firing-control reading, and CI as total / success / skipped / non-green plus whether the reported total_count equals the returned array length.

Claim: session session_01Jmxdo7bmeqCQHLSfmLVX9w (PM seat domain:spec@objectui) → dev subagent on branch claude/issue-8832-calendar-pin-offdisk-anchors
    Session: session_01Jmxdo7bmeqCQHLSfmLVX9w
    Branch: claude/issue-8832-calendar-pin-offdisk-anchors
    Clause-②: no

⚠️ FORMAT REPAIR of my own earlier claim on this card — ⛔ NOT a re-claim and ⛔ NOT a reassignment. Same session, same branch, same declaration. The earlier claim comment stands for its content; this one exists because that content was written in a shape the enqueue gate cannot read.

What was wrong, and how it was caught

scripts/pm/check-clause2-carriers.mjs --pair returned exit 4 on a sibling PR with the finding "the Clause-② declaration is MISPLACED: the fixed spelling appears on the thread but NOT in the card's claim comment, which is the carrier the enqueue gate's content limb reads."

The cause is mine. That script defines a claim comment as one whose body carries a LINE BEGINNING Claim: (:751-752). I had been opening my claims with **Claim:** — a line that begins with **, so no comment on this card was a claim comment at all by the predicate, however complete the reasoning under it.

Measured across the cards this seat claimed tonight:

    claim shape cards gate predicate
bare Claim: line objectui#8735, objectui#8784 ✅ legible — both passed --pair at exit 0
    **Claim:** objectui#9026, objectui#9034, objectui#8832, objectui#8924, objectui#8811 ⛔ illegible

⭐ On objectui#9034 it was worse and worth naming: I also wrote the value in bold — Clause-②: **yes** — so even a loose Clause-②:\s*(yes|no) match failed. The declaration's spelling is fixed: Clause-②: yes or Clause-②: no, exactly those two, unadorned, on their own line.

    The generalisable form

⛔ Markdown emphasis on a field a machine reads is not formatting, it is corruption. I added ** to make the claim easier for a human to scan and silently removed the card from a gate's population — the gate then reported not "this is wrong" but "there is nothing here to read", which is the same self-concealing shape objectui#9026 is itself about.

⇒ ⭐ Nothing about the dispatch changes: the branch, the declaration, the dual-carrier state and every standing rule in the earlier claim comment are unchanged and still binding. A dev checking that the newest Claim: names its branch will find this one, and it names the same branch.

Site 1 now runs a schema-read census over getCalendarConfig's own body, sliced by brace matching, which sees the bare schema.KEY and the (schema as any).KEY cast alike, so dropping the cast no longer reddens the pin it was written to enable. Site 2 slices the config memo's dependency list by bracket matching from a whitespace-tolerant locator and runs the same census over it, so ordering, re-wrapping and print width cannot move the verdict. Site 3 locates the markdown BLOCK that teaches all five keys with the block's internal whitespace collapsed, so a re-wrap cannot move it. Site 4 was a naming problem: the it is renamed to say it keeps the compile-time siblingPins tuple referenced, its vacuous record-literal assertion is gone, and its one runtime assertion now checks the tuple's arity against FLAT_KEYS. Seat note — the dev is right, and both the card and I were each half right about site 4.

My dispatch said the card's :262-275 description was "wrong about the current file" and that the vacuous assertion is at :315/:328. The dev confirmed the location and then refined it: that it carried two vacuous runtime assertions, not one.

assertion what it did who named it
:327 asserted Object.keys of a record literal it had written three lines earlier against FLAT_KEYS ⭐ the card — "asserts a literal it wrote in the same file"
    :328 expect(siblingPins).toHaveLength(5) — counts a tuple literal from :147 ⭐ my table

⇒ the card was right about what and I was right about where, and neither of us had both. ⛔ My "the card's description is wrong about the current file" was too strong: its description was accurate about an assertion I had not found. Both are addressed; the compile-time tuple at :147 is untouched, which is what the card and triage both insisted on.

⭐ The control design here is the bar

Each of sites 1–3 got two mutations, not one:

    • a red-direction mutation proving the new assertion fires (site 1: getCalendarConfig stops reading colorField ⇒ 1 failed / 18 passed, naming the key);
    • a formatting-direction mutation proving the old assertion would have reddened on a pure reformat while the new one survives (site 2: the useMemo re-wrapped prettier-style and its 8 deps reversed ⇒ old regex False, new suite exit 0, 19 passed).

That second leg is what actually demonstrates the defect was fixed rather than merely re-spelled, and it is the leg most "re-anchor" work omits. Site 1's version is the sharpest: with all 23 (schema as any). casts dropped — the future cleanup these pins were blocking — the old assertion is False for all five keys and the new suite is green. ⇒ the pin no longer reddens on the improvement it exists to enable, which was the card's sharpest complaint.

⭐ Also correct: declaring that two landing probes used multi-line grep -F patterns, which grep splits into OR'd patterns, so those were bad probe values and not readings — and re-running with single-line probes rather than quoting the first numbers. And saying plainly that one of its own predictions in that re-run was wrong. ⛔ A bad probe value is not a reading, and reporting it as one would have inflated the evidence.

    Recorded, not acted on

Two out-of-scope observations are correctly left alone: three further literal-text anchors of the same family survive in this file (:311/:312 assert an exact ComponentRegistry.register( call spelling; :227 is a bare toContain('allDayField')), and packages/plugin-calendar/src/ObjectCalendar.tsx still reads all five flat keys through (schema as any) although both are now declared. ⇒ the cast cleanup is a plugin-calendar change, not a packages/types one; this PR measures that it would now land green and ⛔ does not perform it. Whether to close the anchor family rather than the four named instances is a seat call and is noted here rather than filed.

Clause-②: no, both carriers absent and agreeing ⇒ ⛔ no contract review owed. Landing waits on terminal CI.
