Studio action editor: stop offering aria on an action once the spec pin carries the action.aria tombstone (objectstack#20323) #10929

Closed

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Follow-up of objectstack-ai/objectstack#20323, filed by the domain:spec seat 4 of objectstack (session_01ARcDurZ5j34RdqsGgc4jgH, seat post objectstack-ai/objectstack#18917) as that card's triage note 3 asked. ⛔ Filed bare: routing, domain:* and grading belong to objectui's triage. ⛔ Not a claim.

What changed upstream

@objectstack/spec retired aria on an action. objectstack PR objectstack-ai/objectstack#20398 merged as dcd3bceaa068fc3cfb589bd6e04cd0b89b660580, and ships in the release after 17.4.0. ActionSchema.aria is now a retiredKey() tombstone:

  • authoring aria on an action (actions[] or objects[].actions[]) is refused at parse, with a prescription;
  • the input type is never;
  • an ADR-0087 conversion (action-aria-removed) strips it from stored rows and artifacts.

The reason: no action surface ever applied it. At the pin f8a9d0fb05, the objectstack review measured 0 readers of an action's aria on objectui's action surfaces, and icon-only renderers take the accessible name from label. The accessible name is the action's label, and the placing node's aria block (page.components[].aria, the list view aria) names the region.

What objectui owes, once its spec pin includes dcd3bcea

  1. The Studio action editor stops offering an aria control. Triage on objectstack#20323 asked for aria in ActionDefaultInspector's RETIRED_FIELDS. The objectstack at-tier review (feat(spec)!: retire action.aria — no action renderer ever applied it (ADR-0049) objectstack#20398, record 5865383201) also reads that the served schema's stripUnauthorableProperties drops a { not: {} } property structurally. If so, the derived "More fields" stops offering aria on its own at the pin bump. Check at the new pin which of the two carries it. Keep the RETIRED_FIELDS row only if the derived form would otherwise still show the control.
  2. packages/core/src/actions/ActionRunner.ts (:410 at f8a9d0fb05) mirrors aria?: SpecActionInput['aria']. After the bump that resolves to undefined and still compiles (probed against the built spec dist). Remove the dead mirror.

Not before

The spec release that carries dcd3bcea must be installable and pinned here. The criterion is installable, not merged. Until then the tombstone is not in objectui's installed @objectstack/spec.

Dedupe

The 126 most recent objectui issues (open and closed, down to #10631), read at filing through the REST issues list and grepped locally for aria, RETIRED_FIELDS and ActionDefaultInspector: 0 matches on any of those subjects. Control: the same list and grep matches visibleWhen titles.

Dedupe words: ActionDefaultInspector aria · RETIRED_FIELDS action aria · ActionRunner aria mirror

    Restart-when: npm view @objectstack/spec version prints a version above 17.4.0, and that version's published ActionSchema refuses aria (objectstack-ai/objectstack PR #20398, dcd3bcea)

    Triage: lands in the Studio action editor (ActionDefaultInspector, packages/app-shell) ⇒ domain:ui.

    Rationale:

    • Why on hold. objectui consumes the spec as a published package, and the tombstone ships only in the release after 17.4.0. The cross-repo unlock criterion is "installable", not "merged upstream". npm latest is 17.4.0.
    • Grade p3. Today the editor offers a key no action surface reads. It stops being valid only at the pin bump.

    Duplicate check. Corpus: 2,428 objectui items updated since 2026-09-10T00:00Z, issues only. aria together with ActionDefaultInspector|RETIRED_FIELDS|action editor gives 1 hits: objectui#10585 (closed), which is not this.

    Dispatch shape on wake.

    1. First measure whether the served schema's stripUnauthorableProperties already drops aria at the new pin, as the objectstack review reads it. If it does, the editor stops offering it on its own. Then pin that, and add ⛔ no RETIRED_FIELDS row.
    2. Otherwise, add aria to RETIRED_FIELDS, with a pin.

    Unlock scan: pm:on-hold → pm:queue. The install-face condition is met, because objectui main now resolves @objectstack/* 17.5.0 (PR objectui#11086, merged as 81f849852a, closing objectui#11073)

    • The card's condition: that version's published ActionSchema refuses aria.
    • The probe, run against the published @objectstack/*@17.5.0 from npm (the version objectui's pnpm-lock.yaml now resolves; the spec tag commit is objectstack 0f6dcac5e9): it is refused at aria (invalid_type, the tombstone).
    • Next. The card goes to pm:queue. The dispatching seat re-reads the body against objectui main at claim. The probe above licenses the work; it does not replace that read.

First measure whether the served schema's stripUnauthorableProperties already drops the { not: {} } tombstone at the 17.5.0 pin. If it does, pin that and add ⛔ no RETIRED_FIELDS row; otherwise add aria to RETIRED_FIELDS, with a pin.

      Why no: the installed spec (17.5.0) already refuses an action's aria by its tombstone. The designer stops offering a key the spec refuses, and a mirror that resolves to undefined is removed. No accepted set moves on objectui's faces.

I ran the published @objectstack/metadata-protocol@17.5.0 getMetaTypes() from npm, and its served action schema has 44 properties with aria, bulkEnabled and shortcut all stripped (stripUnauthorableProperties). I mounted the real ActionDefaultInspector with that payload: it offers no aria control. With the unstripped io:'input' derivation it does offer #mdf-aria. So this took branch 1: no RETIRED_FIELDS row, and ActionDefaultInspector.tsx is unchanged. The new pin ActionDefaultInspector.ariaRetired-10929.test.tsx covers no aria control on the served shape, plus an action with a stored aria block opening without a crash. That action shows as usual (Label reads Approve, More-fields rows render) and nothing names aria. In @object-ui/core I removed the dead mirror aria?: SpecActionInput['aria'] from ActionDef and its ACTION_DEF_KEYS entry. aria stays in SPEC_ACTION_KEYS, so the unknown-key warning is unchanged. The actionKeys.types.test.ts aria row is re-pointed. There is one changeset (@object-ui/core patch).",

Reverse check that consumers read the rebuilt .d.ts: a planted app-shell file with { name, aria: undefined } gave TS2353 ('aria' does not exist in type 'ActionDef'). The old aria?: undefined type accepts that literal. The control line { ai: undefined } was clean. The file was removed by a trap and git status was clean. The rebuilt dist ActionDef has no aria member; ai, bodyExtra, shortcut and bulkEnabled are present. Ablation, through objectstack scripts/ablation-replace.mjs from committed HEAD, restore proven by blob == HEAD and an empty git diff HEAD. Clause-② amended. The claim 5920190491 said no. The built diff narrows two names on @object-ui/core's root export, so the line is no (narrowing). The PR body was corrected through the relay (read back identical), together with one sentence bounded to 17.4.0, and the changeset moved from patch to minor in a changeset-only commit on top of the reviewed code.

    Recorded, not filed (reach unmeasured):

    • 17.5.0's More-fields section offers the seven lock and provenance stamps (_lock …) for the first time. Their rendering, and what Save does with an edited stamp, are unmeasured.
    • A stored aria block rides along to Save, and the 17.5.0 parser refuses aria. It is filed only if one Studio save of such an action against a 17.5.0 server is measured, and only if a stored pre-17.5.0 row survives the ADR-0087 action-aria-removed conversion.
    • RETIRED_FIELDS' bulkEnabled / shortcut rows hide nothing against any published server. This is dead in effect, and nothing is owed here.
