What changes

A. ADR-0087 semantic entry (packages/spec/src/migrations/entries/semantic/18.user-field-delete-behavior-enforced.ts, id user-field-delete-behavior-enforced). PR #29368 made a declared deleteBehavior on a user field take effect when the user is deleted. No key moved, so there is no conversion; the entry records the judgment the consumer owes, following the two 18.x precedents field-master-detail-set-null-refused and user-field-foreign-reference-refused:

  • surface: object.fields[].deleteBehavior (and objectExtension.fields[].deleteBehavior) on a type: 'user' field;
  • replacement: declare only the outcome you want enforced, or drop the key to keep the field out of the walk;
  • reason: the declaration was inert and now takes effect; the stored population of objects saved while the parse still wrote set_null on every type can carry a set_null nobody authored. On a non-required field that is accepted as it is (it clears the field, as on a lookup); on a required field it now refuses the user delete with 409 DELETE_RESTRICTED wherever clearing would leave the field empty;
  • acceptance: every declared value is meant, a required field carries set_null only where the refusal is intended, and a test delete gives the declared outcome per field.

The entry reaches the generated registry (one hit for the id in the gitignored registry.ts), and check:spec-changes / check:upgrade-guide project it in memory.

The #29253 changeset (.changeset/29253-user-field-delete-behavior.md, unreleased; added to the claim by amendment 6584095382). Finding A of contract review 6579523704: its ADR-0087 marker goes from not-required (no-migration-prescription) to registered user-field-delete-behavior-enforced, and its "Rows stored before #9784" paragraph now names the entry and the fix. The marker's old "there is no stored value for a conversion to rewrite" clause, which contradicted that paragraph, is gone with it.

B. Spec prose that said a user field never joins the delete walk:

  • data/field.zod.ts: the deleteBehavior docblock (FieldSchema.deleteBehavior defaults set_null onto EVERY field type, so built artifacts ship the key on text/datetime/number fields #9784 paragraph), the .overwrite comment, the comment above the user reference refusal, and the refusal message itself ("a user field never did" becomes "a user field has no default and keeps the id unless it declares one");
  • the D3 entry user-field-foreign-reference-refused: "which a user field never did" becomes "which a user field that declares no deleteBehavior does not do";
  • data/hook.zod.ts: the referentialFieldClear docblock and describe, and the referentialCascadeDelete docblock, now name user beside lookup / tree; content/docs/references/data/hook.mdx is regenerated for the describe (gen:docs);
  • contracts/objectql-engine.ts: the getCascadeDeleteObjects docblock names user.

⛔ Held, owed after the freeze: packages/spec/src/api/protocol.zod.ts, the two cascadeDeleteObjects describes (GetMetaItemResponseSchema and GetMetaItemCachedResponseSchema's sibling text, which enumerate master_detail / lookup / tree). protocol.ts is frozen until 2026-11-03 06:00Z at the latest; the seat sends that edit after the freeze lifts.

Forms. data/field.form.ts and data/object.form.ts showed deleteBehavior only for lookup and master_detail. The lookup branch now reads data.type in ['lookup','user'] in both files, so a Studio author can set the key on a user field with all three outcomes. A user field has no default, and the metadata-admin select prefills nothing, so the control writes a value only when the author picks one.

Why

Contract review 6579523704 on PR #29368, should-fixes A and B; triage 6583845201 grades it p1 because both ship with 18.3.0.

Tests

packages/spec/src/data/form-delete-behavior-options.test.ts gains two cases per form: a user author sees exactly one control offering all three values, and a text author sees none.

  • Reverse verification, on commit 44bec0e9: with both visibleWhen rules put back to data.type == 'lookup' (zero hits of the new spelling on disk after the swap), the suite reported 2 failed | 16 passed (18), the two user cases, one per form; restored from HEAD, git diff HEAD empty.
  • pnpm --filter @objectstack/spec test under the verify lock: Test Files 792 passed (792), Tests 23526 passed and 1 todo; lock VERDICT command-exit 0.

Verification

  • pnpm --filter @objectstack/spec build (VERDICT command-exit 0), then check:generated: one stale artifact (content/docs/references/**, from the hook describe), regenerated with gen:docs, then all 14 up to date.
  • check:spec-changes and check:upgrade-guide: exit 0.
  • Derived gates (node scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs --commands, 106 commands): run from a runner that records CMD :: exit N, measured on head 21cd9672, and reconciled with --ran: 106 derived, 105 run, 1 NOT-MEASURED, 0 UNRUN (dispatch-gates --ran exit 0). Of the 105, 104 exit 0 and one exits 1: check-empty-changeset --base origin/main, by design (see Acceptance notes). Two first runs exited 3 (prerequisite) and were re-run after the prerequisite: check-plugin-teardown-shape --self-test after fetching its pinned fixture commit (then exit 0, 48 cases), and check:i18n after building its extract closure (then exit 0, 10 packages in sync). NOT MEASURED: check:dual-build-cjs-loads (exit 3, it needs every package built); CI runs it.

Acceptance notes

Human Minimum

  • 1. Schemas start as Zod; packages/spec holds no runtime logic.
  • 2. Every name I added uses the casing for its kind.
  • 3. No formatter ran; pnpm lint passes. (No formatter ran. pnpm lint was not run locally: it is CI's run.)
  • 4. One issue, one branch off an up-to-date main, one pull request.
  • 5. A change that publishes carries a changeset, and both declaration lines are filled in here and in the changeset.
  • 6. packages/spec touched: its generated artifacts are regenerated and committed.
  • 7. No hand edits to content/docs/references/, packages/*/CHANGELOG.md or content/docs/releases/.
  • 8. Title, body and comments are in English.

…emantic entry and correct the delete-walk prose (#29415)

Item A: semantic migration entry user-field-delete-behavior-enforced; the
#29253 changeset's ADR-0087 marker becomes registered and its stored-row
paragraph names the entry. Item B: FieldSchema docblocks and the user
reference refusal message, the user-field-foreign-reference-refused entry,
the hook-context referential markers and the getCascadeDeleteObjects
docblock say a user field joins the walk when it declares deleteBehavior.
Both metadata forms show deleteBehavior on a user field.

The api/protocol.zod.ts cascadeDeleteObjects describe is held for the
protocol.ts freeze.

📓 Docs Drift Check

This PR changes 1 package(s): @objectstack/spec, touching 6 documentable anchor(s).

18 hand-written doc(s) name something this change touched — list omitted above 15 rows. Re-derive on the tree named below: node scripts/docs-audit/affected-docs.mjs --json 32907ae9ce0f020a966c5363eaca2a688240e47a.

⛔ 6 release-owned page(s) also affected — read-only, see AGENTS.md Documentation Guardrails.

What this run could not see
  • 4 name(s) were too generic to anchor anything (single lowercase words)
  • the SDK route bridge reached 60 of 216 client-bound route-ledger rows — the other 156 have no registrar path: tail to select them, so pages documenting THEIR client methods cannot appear above, on this or any run. Of those 156: 0 are remediable by widening that discovery convention (an in-repo file declares the path; the convention did not scan it); 55 are structural — on a ledger where NOT ONE row is declared in-repo, so no discovery change reaches them at any price; 101 are undecided (no in-repo declaration, on a ledger that has other in-repo registrars — absence and an unreadable spelling are not distinguishable here). The rows themselves: node scripts/docs-audit/affected-docs.mjs --bridge-coverage
  • a page that states a rule by its inputs shares no identifier with the emitter that implements the rule, so an emitter-only diff cannot list it — not on this run and not on any run. Measured on fix(driver-sql): emit varchar(maxLength) for a text field a declared index keys on #11430: content/docs/protocol/objectql/types.mdx documents the text-family column mapping by the ObjectQL type names it maps FROM (text / textarea / html) while the diff changed createColumn; it went unlisted, and it was the page that diff falsified, in four places. No shared token exists to detect this on, so a rule your change carries has to be re-read by hand in the pages that restate it.
  • a key NAME is not a key, so the hand re-read the line above prescribes can land on the wrong schema. The same spelling is authorable on one governed type and a [REMOVED] tombstone on another for each of active, aria, joins, objects, template, tools and version (censused on [finding] tools is a key on BOTH AgentSchema (tombstoned, dead) and SkillSchema (live, cloud-attested), so a name-based search attributes skill examples to the agent key — it produced a false stop-the-line alarm on PR #19059 #19093 over the liveness ledger's governed types, top-level keys); nothing in a search result distinguishes the two, so a grep hit on a LIVE example reads as evidence about the DEAD key. Measured on fix(spec): the agent.tools liveness row says dead — it claimed live on a key the schema tombstoned #19059: content/docs/ai/agents.mdx was reported as contradicting the agent.tools tombstone over its tools: example at :161, which is inside the defineSkill({ block opened at :155 — the page was already correct. Settle ownership by PARSING the value against both schemas, never by the name: that literal PASSES SkillSchema, and as an AgentSchema it FAILS at tools with the tombstone prescription. ⛔ These names are not the whole class — a key retired through a .strict() guidance map leaves no tombstone in the walked shape and none of them here (tool.category, live as AIToolDefinition.category).

Coarse fallback — 168 page(s) merely mention a changed package (the pre-#9192 predicate, kept for the deliberately-wide backstop): node scripts/docs-audit/affected-docs.mjs --json 32907ae9ce0f020a966c5363eaca2a688240e47a → packageMentionDocs.

Which tree this was computed on

This run read content/docs from 2417bd15c045c7f17578243be5abb9b60e29dbe5 — the merge of head 59709cbbbd3c3120beafbca1a265710d227ab7ba into base 32907ae9ce0f020a966c5363eaca2a688240e47a, which is what actions/checkout gives a pull_request run. Not the PR head.

A worktree cut from an older main holds a different content/docs, so re-deriving there can legitimately return a different list — that is a different tree, not a wrong row. To answer on the same tree:

# while this PR is open — GitHub drops the merge commit once it closes
git fetch origin 2417bd15c045c7f17578243be5abb9b60e29dbe5 && git checkout 2417bd15c045c7f17578243be5abb9b60e29dbe5
# afterwards, rebuild it from the two parents, which stay fetchable
git fetch origin 32907ae9ce0f020a966c5363eaca2a688240e47a 59709cbbbd3c3120beafbca1a265710d227ab7ba && git checkout -B drift-repro 32907ae9ce0f020a966c5363eaca2a688240e47a && git merge --no-ff 59709cbbbd3c3120beafbca1a265710d227ab7ba

node scripts/docs-audit/affected-docs.mjs --json 32907ae9ce0f020a966c5363eaca2a688240e47a

⚠️ That checkout carried uncommitted changes, so the commit above does not fully identify what was read.

Advisory only, and a precision-first one (#9192): a page is listed because it names a
symbol, wire route or SDK method this diff touched — not because it mentions a changed
package. Each row says which anchor put it there, so a wrong row is reportable rather than
merely annoying. To re-verify, run the docs-accuracy-audit workflow scoped to these files:
node scripts/docs-audit/affected-docs.mjs 32907ae9ce0f020a966c5363eaca2a688240e47a → pass the list as
args.docs, on the commit named under Which tree this was computed on.

Contract review

Served-tier: CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER
Head-sha: 59709cbbbd3c3120beafbca1a265710d227ab7ba
Local-runs: none
Scope: packages/spec/src/migrations/entries/semantic/18.user-field-delete-behavior-enforced.ts, packages/spec/src/migrations/entries/semantic/18.user-field-foreign-reference-refused.ts, packages/spec/src/data/field.zod.ts, packages/spec/src/data/hook.zod.ts, packages/spec/src/contracts/objectql-engine.ts, packages/spec/src/data/field.form.ts, packages/spec/src/data/object.form.ts, .changeset/29253-user-field-delete-behavior.md, .changeset/29415-user-delete-behavior-entry.md + packages/objectql/src/engine.ts on main (statesDeleteSemantics, deleteWalkTargetOf, DELETE_RESTRICTED)

Inputs read: card #29415, PR #29553's body, its 12 files, and the net diff against main (+141/−35). The head's check-runs, and the failing Check Changeset and Test UI (15/16) logs. engine.ts on origin/main, read with git show.

① Derived judgments

  • The new semantic entry user-field-delete-behavior-enforced: right.
    • Surface: deleteBehavior on type: 'user' fields, objects and extensions.
    • Replacement: the three outcomes, plus "drop the key to keep the field out of the walk".
    • Reason: the walk used to read only master_detail, lookup and tree.
    • All of it matches engine.ts on main: statesDeleteSemantics admits a user field only when it declares a deleteBehavior in DECLARED_DELETE_BEHAVIORS; deleteWalkTargetOf answers sys_user for a user field; and the refusal is the walk's DELETE_RESTRICTED.
    • The stored-population sentences are exact: pre-FieldSchema.deleteBehavior defaults set_null onto EVERY field type, so built artifacts ship the key on text/datetime/number fields #9784 set_null clears a non-required field, and refuses on a required one.
    • A semantic entry rather than a conversion is the right shape, with field-master-detail-set-null-refused as precedent. No key or value moved.
  • The prose corrections: right. FieldSchema, the user-reference refusal message, the user-field-foreign-reference-refused entry, referentialFieldClear / referentialCascadeDelete and getCascadeDeleteObjects now all say a user field joins the walk exactly when it declares the key. That is the engine's predicate.
  • The forms: right. The deleteBehavior control's visibleWhen is widened to ['lookup','user'] in both the field designer and the object form, with the master_detail branch disjoint as before. The new test pins it. A user field has no default, so the control writes nothing unless the author picks a value. This matches the parse, which materializes no key on user.
  • DELIBERATE CORRECTION, confirmed by this record (landing-operations.md: a diff that also changes code needs an at-tier PASS on the same head that judges each rewritten sentence). The rewritten pending note is .changeset/29253-user-field-delete-behavior.md.
    • Sentence 1, the marker: not-required (no-migration-prescription) … becomes registered user-field-delete-behavior-enforced. True now: this PR adds that entry under that id, and check-adr-0087-registration is green.
    • Sentence 2, appended to "Rows stored before FieldSchema.deleteBehavior defaults set_null onto EVERY field type, so built artifacts ship the key on text/datetime/number fields #9784": "No conversion rewrites it … the semantic migration entry user-field-delete-behavior-enforced lists it for objectstack migrate meta and the upgrade guide. Save the object again without the key, or with the value you want." True: no conversion is registered for it, the entry's acceptanceCriteria names that population, and the remedy is the entry's own.
    • Neither sentence restores a false statement, and nothing else in that note moves.
  • Gate verdicts on this head: 54 success, 8 skipped, 3 failure.

② Semver level

.changeset/29415-user-delete-behavior-entry.md carries @objectstack/spec: patch, Clause-②: no and Metadata-protocol: none. The spec change is describe/JSDoc text, a semantic entry and form-definition visibleWhen values: no schema key, accept set or export moves. Right. check-changeset-no-major is green.

③ Boundary flags

④ Design judgment

The entry records the one thing an upgrading author must do, which is read each user-field declaration, and it names the population most likely to surprise: unauthored pre-#9784 set_null. The prose now has one rule everywhere. The form exposes the key the engine honours, without inventing a default.

Tried to break it:

  • A user field with no deleteBehavior: the predicate says no walk, and every text now says the id is kept. Right.
  • required + set_null: refused with DELETE_RESTRICTED, as stated in both the entry and the note.
  • The form on a master_detail: the predicates stay disjoint.
  • Security: nothing here is security-relevant.

Must-fix: none.

Should-fix:

  1. field.zod.ts ≈L1822: "and on a user field that AUTHORS one" reads as authoring a reference, which is the antecedent. The engine keys on an authored deleteBehavior. Write "a user field that declares a deleteBehavior".

Landing condition: Check Changeset stays red by design, and this record is its confirmation. The Test UI red is #29468's. Both are named here, so the PR may enter the queue with them under SKILL.md's three conditions.

VERDICT: PASS
