Fixes #25020
Clause-②: no (narrowing)

The Clause-② line above is the claim's (comment 6306742426: "If the measured route is the refusal, it is no (narrowing)"), and the measured route is the refusal. The changeset carries the same value. Under the claim, this PR owes a CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER review before the queue.

Dev run of the domain:engine seat 2 PM dispatch (session session_01QK6pdbxKZiHdFApL8RYVh9, mode:subagent), branch claude/issue-25020-turso-encryption-key-local, BASE 4d991588f, with one true merge of origin/main at d15981a07 (it touched no file of this diff). Patch round 1 (contract review 6308116467, FAIL item 1 and findings 7–9; seat verdict 6308149967) landed as 0833772a4, b0236c662 and 4a595ed43. Patch round 2 (seat order 6310662118) landed as df6803d15: one changeset sentence, .changeset/** only. Every reading below was taken at head 4a595ed43 unless it says otherwise (the full dogfood battery, the derived gates and the check-runs were re-read at df6803d15); the H1 table and the H2 grep were read at BASE and at d15981a07, and nothing since touched what they read. Only test values appear here (test-key-25020); no real key and no production path.

The premise, measured first: it does not hold

The seat's premise P was: the key can be honoured by handing it to the engine driver-turso already uses for the file's reads and writes, with no engine swap and no new dependency. Measured:

  • The engine is better-sqlite3 13.0.3 (SQLite 3.53.4), and it has no encryption codec. PRAGMA compile_options lists no codec option. PRAGMA key = 'test-key-25020', PRAGMA cipher, PRAGMA cipher_version and PRAGMA rekey all answer [] (an unknown pragma is a silent no-op). A table written after PRAGMA key leaves a file whose header is SQLite format 3, and a second, key-less read-only open reads the row back.
  • The native libSQL binding does encrypt (@libsql/client 0.18.0 over libsql 0.5.29, already a dependency). A local file: client with the key writes a file whose header is not SQLite format 3; better-sqlite3 opening it answers SQLITE_NOTADB; a libSQL client reopening it without the key answers SQLITE_NOTADB; with the key it reads the row. But that binding is not the engine this driver reads and writes through, so honouring the key means replacing the Knex / better-sqlite3 path with another engine. That is the ruling's "P does not hold" branch.

So the route is the refusal. No engine swap, no partial swap, no warn-and-ignore.

What the driver did with the key, per mode (H1), before this change

Measured on TursoDriver from source at BASE, with a test key:

Mode What happened
local (file: url + key) constructs, connects, syncSchema + create + find round-trip; file header SQLite format 3; plain better-sqlite3, read-only, no key, reads the row
replica, supplied client (file: + syncUrl + client) the same: the key reaches nothing
replica, driver-built sync client (file: + syncUrl, unreachable local sync endpoint) super.connect() writes the file in plaintext first (db.db, -shm, -wal, header SQLite format 3); only then is createClient handed the key, and its construction fails to connect (sync error: … tcp connect error)
@libsql/client + the key, over that plaintext file SQLITE_NOTADB
this driver's replica face over a file @libsql/client encrypted with the key DATABASE_ERROR (SQLITE_NOTADB)

So both halves of H1 hold, depending on which side opens the file with the key: the engine that serves every read and write never encrypts it, and a file the sync client encrypted is one that engine cannot open. NOT MEASURED: a replica with the key against a reachable sync server. No libSQL sync server runs in this container, and the native binding's default (non-offline) sync path speaks the server's replication protocol, which nothing here can stand in for. The refusal does not depend on it: it fires at construction, before any client is built.

Who declares the key today (H2)

Measured on this tree at d15981a07: git grep over examples/**, packages/create-objectstack, packages/cli/src (non-test) and skills/** finds zero encryptionKey authors; no environment variable (TURSO_ENCRYPTION_KEY, OS_DATABASE_ENCRYPTION*) or host default sets it. The hits are the declarations themselves, docs describing them (content/docs/data-modeling/drivers.mdx, docs/design/driver-turso.md, the driver README), and test fixtures. Of the fixtures, the redaction suites author it on remote libsql:// urls (unaffected), and two metadata-protocol suites carry it on a file: url in STORED rows that no parse reads (run green, below).

What changes

A non-empty encryptionKey on a local datasource (a file: url or :memory:) or an embedded replica (a file: url beside syncUrl), detected or forced with mode, is refused at all three places a turso config is judged, with one message per mode:

  • Construction. new TursoDriver() (and createTursoDriver()) throws VALIDATION_ERROR / 400 before super(), so no file is opened. It is the last of the local-engine refusals in the constructor, thrown through the existing envelope helper. The message comes from localEncryptionKeyRefusal(mode) in packages/drivers/driver-turso/src/turso-driver.ts.
  • Authoring. tursoTransportIssues in packages/spec/src/data/driver/turso.zod.ts gains a last arm in the local / replica branch: one custom issue on encryptionKey. It reaches DatasourceSchema (as config.encryptionKey), validateDriverConfig, defineStack / os validate, and a save or test connection through the datasource admin service.
  • The driver mirror (packages/drivers/driver-turso/src/spec/turso.zod.ts) carries the same arm byte for byte.

Patch round 1: the key is judged by where the database lives, not by the mode. A forced mode: 'remote' answers first in detectMode, so { url: 'file:…', mode: 'remote', encryptionKey } skipped every local-engine refusal, and connect() handed the local url to createRemoteClient(), which builds createClient({ url, authToken, concurrency }) with no key. Measured on this head with the new constructor arm ablated (leg D below): it constructed and connected in remote mode, syncSchema + create + find round-tripped, the file's header read SQLite format 3, and plain better-sqlite3, read-only, with no key, read the row. With the arm: VALIDATION_ERROR / 400 at construction, and the file does not exist afterwards. Now refused at all three places:

  • Construction. One mode-independent predicate before super(): a non-empty key beside a url that namesLocalDatabase() (a file: url in any letter case, or :memory:, the same scheme fold the driver uses everywhere). In a local or replica mode it throws the existing text (every url reaching that point is already a file: url or :memory:, because localEngineDefect refused the rest); under a forced remote mode it throws remoteModeLocalEncryptionKeyRefusal(url). It runs after every forced-remote refusal, so a syncUrl or a lone sync beside it keeps its own message.
  • Authoring. tursoTransportIssues gains a last arm in its remote branch: a file: url or :memory: beside a non-empty key raises one custom issue on encryptionKey, after the timeoutMs and syncUrl issues.
  • The mirror carries the arm byte for byte. It declares no mode, so zod strips a forced one and the mirror judges { url: 'file:…', mode: 'remote', encryptionKey } as the local database its url selects: it refuses it on encryptionKey, in the local arm's text. Its copy of the remote arm is unreachable through it and is kept for copy parity, like its other forced-mode branches. The parity table therefore judges the forced-remote rows by the constructor and the spec contract (verdict, key, and byte equality of the constructor's message with the spec's), and skips the mirror's verdict for them, as it does for every forced-mode row.

Two texts, one per variant; both name the mode, echo no url and no key, and keep the envelope:

encryptionKey asks for this datasource's database file to be encrypted, but url is a local file: url, and mode: 'remote' runs every read and write of that file through the libSQL client this driver builds, which is handed no key: nothing would encrypt the file, so it would be written in plaintext that any SQLite reader opens without the key — the turso driver refuses this configuration when it starts. Nothing in this driver encrypts a local file. Drop encryptionKey, and encrypt the disk or volume the file lives on instead, or point url at a remote Turso database, whose storage encryption is the server's to configure, not this key's.

encryptionKey asks for this datasource's database to be encrypted, but url names an in-memory database, and mode: 'remote' runs every read and write of it through the libSQL client this driver builds, which is handed no key: there is no file for the key to encrypt, so it would change nothing — the turso driver refuses this configuration when it starts. Drop encryptionKey.

The key is not forwarded to createClient in this shape: honouring it there would make a file's encryption depend on a transport override, a capability nothing pulls, and #25050 proposes retiring the key. A remote url (libsql://, https://, ws(s)://) with a key is still accepted; that mode is #25050's.

The message (local; the replica variant says "an embedded replica" and adds the parenthesis "the sync client shares that one file, and a file it encrypted could not be opened by that engine"):

encryptionKey asks for this datasource's database file to be encrypted, but this datasource is a local database, which runs every read and write through a local SQLite engine that has no encryption codec: nothing would encrypt the file, so it would be written in plaintext that any SQLite reader opens without the key — the turso driver refuses this configuration when it starts. Nothing in this driver encrypts a local or replica file. Drop encryptionKey, and encrypt the disk or volume the file lives on instead, or keep the data in a remote Turso database, whose storage encryption is the server's to configure, not this key's.

It names the mode and what does encrypt. It names the datasource the way its siblings do ("this datasource"): the driver is never handed the datasource's name, and the boot path prefixes every build failure with datasource 'NAME': connect failed — (datasource-connection-service.ts), while the authoring issue sits at that datasource's config.encryptionKey. It echoes no url and no key.

Order. A url the engine cannot open, a lone sync, a forced replica with no syncUrl, a forced local mode beside a syncUrl, and under a forced remote mode a syncUrl, each keep their own refusal. A lone sync or a forced-remote syncUrl stays the spec's first issue, with the key's second. An empty encryptionKey is unset, as the loaders read it (buildTursoDriverConfig drops it), and is still accepted. A remote url is not judged (the claim puts the libsql:// mode out of scope; see Acceptance notes).

Text made true. The encryptionKey describe in both schemas, its TSDoc, TursoDriverConfig.encryptionKey, the README, docs/design/driver-turso.md §10, the content/docs/data-modeling/drivers.mdx still-writable trade-off (turso's key left it: it was never "a capability the client genuinely honours"), the STILL_WRITABLE_CREDENTIAL_KEYS comment and (patch round 1) the module header of datasource-credential-redaction.ts, the TSDoc of @objectstack/service-datasource's exported TursoDriverConfigInput.encryptionKey, and the QA checklist's turso expectation (write-accepted only on a remote datasource now). Patch round 1 also makes the describe in both schemas, the regenerated reference, drivers.mdx's remote sentence, the README and the design doc true for a file: url or :memory: under a forced remote mode. The replica arm of connect() stops forwarding encryptionKey to createClient: a non-empty one can no longer reach it. The generated content/docs/references/data/driver-turso.mdx is regenerated (check:generated --fix, the one stale artifact; in patch round 1 again, then gen:schema, gen:docs and check:docs in that order, exit 0 at 4a595ed43: "227 generated files in sync with packages/spec").

Migration. packages/spec/src/migrations/entries/semantic/18.turso-config-local-encryption-key-refused.ts (ADR-0087 semantic entry), registered in the changeset's ADR-0087 marker as registered turso-config-local-encryption-key-refused. The changeset .changeset/25020-turso-encryption-key-local.md is minor for @objectstack/spec and @objectstack/driver-turso, BREAKING, with the FROM / TO table (a forced-remote row added in patch round 1) and the one-line fix: delete encryptionKey from every turso datasource whose url is a file: url or :memory:. @objectstack/service-datasource is graded patch for its TSDoc: check-changeset-no-major.mjs --base origin/main --event (this body's Clause-② line) answered exit 0, "@objectstack/service-datasource: patch … NOT refused". A stored row in that shape now fails when its driver is built (failed-degraded, ADR-0062 D5). Patch round 1 dropped the connect-failure escape hatch from the entry's reason and from the changeset's ADR-0062 D5 sentence.

Pins

  • packages/drivers/driver-turso/src/turso-driver-local-encryption-key-refusal.test.ts (new): local (file:, FILE:, forced mode: 'local', :memory:, createTursoDriver) and replica (driver-built client, supplied client, forced mode: 'replica') refusals as code + status + the mode's first sentence, each asserting no database file exists afterwards; the message names no url and no key. Controls: a local datasource with no key, one with an empty key, and a replica with no key each construct, connect, write and read back through the driver, and the file is a plain SQLite database with the row.
  • packages/drivers/driver-turso/src/spec/turso-config-constructor-parity.test.ts: 16 new rows (8 refused on encryptionKey, 6 order rows, 2 empty-key accept rows); the byte-equality set now includes encryptionKey; floors at the measured counts (8 key rows, 3 of them replica, 31 copied-message rows).
  • packages/spec/src/data/driver/turso.test.ts: the authoring refusal per mode, no echo, order (including the two-issue sync + key case), both authoring doors, controls, and the describe no longer promising AES-256.
  • Patch round 1. Refusal file: file:, FILE: and file: + timeout under a forced remote mode (code, status, the first sentence, no file afterwards), :memory: and file::memory: (the in-memory sentence), createTursoDriver with no echo; controls: the same shape with no key, with an empty key, :memory: with no key, and a libsql:// url with a key (auto-detected and forced remote) each construct in remote mode. Parity table: 5 rows refused on encryptionKey under a forced remote mode, 2 order rows (syncUrl first, a lone sync first, each two issues at the spec), 4 accept controls (:memory: and an empty key under a forced remote mode, libsql:// with a key auto-detected and forced); floors 13 key rows, 5 of them forced-remote, 38 copied-message rows. Spec test: the file and in-memory variants, no echo, order, both doors, controls, and the describe naming the forced remote mode.
  • Fixture triage: driver-turso/src/spec/turso.test.ts's all-fields replica fixture drops the key (it pinned the branch this removes); driver-placeholder-refusal.test.ts's turso encryptionKey row moves to a remote url, the one mode where a literal still parses, with a comment that it pins the placeholder judgement and not a remote mode honouring the key.

Reverse verification (ablation), direction predicted before it ran

Each leg went through scripts/ablation-replace.mjs on the committed head (anchor 1 to 0, blob changed, restore proven: blob equals HEAD and git diff HEAD empty). All three suites resolve the mutated file from source, so no rebuild was needed.

Leg Mutation Run Result
A constructor: the refusal call replaced by a no-op the new refusal file + the parity table 25 failed / 249 passed / 37 skipped: all 9 refusal cases and 16 parity cases (8 key rows times constructor verdict and byte equality) red; the 3 controls and every order row green
B spec: the encryptionKey arm disabled spec/src/data/driver/turso.test.ts + the placeholder family 5 failed / 123 passed: the 5 refusal cases red; controls, the describe pin and the placeholder family green
C mirror: the same arm disabled the parity table + the mirror's own test 7 failed / 287 passed / 37 skipped: the mirror verdict on the 6 unforced key rows and the sync + key row red; forced-mode rows skip the mirror by design
D (patch round 1, at 4a595ed43) constructor: the new predicate narrowed back to the old guard (mode !== 'remote' && …) the refusal file + the parity table, plus the door-6 probe predicted: the forced-remote refusal cases red, everything else green. 16 failed / 299 passed / 47 skipped: the 6 forced-remote refusal cases (3 file, 2 in-memory, createTursoDriver) and 10 parity cases (5 rows times constructor verdict and byte equality) red; every control, every local / replica case and both forced-remote order rows green. The probe under the mutation reproduced door 6 (plaintext file, read with no key)

Not ablated: the parity table's spec half through packages/spec/dist (each leg would need a spec rebuild); leg B ablates the same arm through source. The new remote arm in the spec and the mirror is not ablated in patch round 1 (the dispatch asked for one leg, over the constructor arm); the mirror's copy is unreachable through the mirror, so no run could turn it red.

Tests (head 4a595ed43)

  • @objectstack/driver-turso: tsc --noEmit exit 0; vitest run: Test Files 93 passed (93), Tests 2538 passed, 47 skipped.
  • @objectstack/spec: typecheck exit 0 (with check:scripts-typecheck and check:test-typecheck); vitest run --project local: Test Files 703 passed (703), Tests 21383 passed, 1 todo. check:generated --fix: the one stale artifact (check:docs) regenerated; check:docs exit 0.
  • @objectstack/service-datasource (imports the changed TSDoc file): tsc --noEmit exit 0; vitest run: Test Files 51 passed (51), Tests 916 passed.
  • At d15981a07: metadata-protocol stored-row suites (2 files, 44 passed). test:repo is CI's (Test Core).

Gates

node scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs --commands --repo objectstack-ai/objectstack derived 121 families at 4a595ed43 (two more than round 0: the check-tenant-audit-census pair). All 121 were run once after a full turbo run build, each exit code captured to a file before any pipe: all 121 answered 0. --ran reconciliation: "121 derived, 121 run, 0 NOT-MEASURED, 0 UNRUN". check:driver-conformance reads "55 covered cell(s), 0 in the DEBT ledger, 0 exempt" at BASE, at d15981a07 and at 4a595ed43. The local-only check-dev-prereqs scan: exit 0. The PR's check-runs on 4a595ed43, read once: 36 success, 6 skipped.

Full dogfood battery (the title carries ! and the line carries (narrowing)), once, on the final head df6803d15, closure built per ① and run under the lock as pnpm --filter @objectstack/dogfood test with no shard and no path: VERDICT command-exit 0, Test Files 284 passed, 3 skipped (287), Tests 2361 passed, 18 skipped. No failure. (At 4a595ed43 the same battery also read VERDICT command-exit 0, 284 passed / 3 skipped, 2361 passed / 18 skipped.) At df6803d15 the 121 derived gate families all exit 0 (--ran: 121 derived, 121 run, 0 NOT-MEASURED, 0 UNRUN), and the check-runs read 36 success, 6 skipped.

Acceptance notes

  • A remote url still accepts the key and drops it (not this card's; the claim puts the libsql:// mode out of scope; filed as turso: after #25020 a remote datasource's encryptionKey is still parsed and silently dropped, so the key is honoured in no mode; retire it (ADR-0049 enforce-or-remove) #25050). Measured: new TursoDriver({ url: 'libsql://db.example.invalid', encryptionKey: 'test-key-25020' }) constructs and connects in remote mode; createRemoteClient never forwards the key; @libsql/client's own remote client refuses that key (ENCRYPTION_KEY_NOT_SUPPORTED: Encryption key is not supported by the remote client.). The spec contract parses it on a remote url. After this PR the key is honoured in no mode, which the describes now say. A local url under a forced remote mode is not this case: it is refused (patch round 1).
  • The encryptionKey key stays declared (and redacted on read) because removing it is a key retirement this refusal does not make.

📓 Docs Drift Check

This PR changes 3 package(s): @objectstack/driver-turso, @objectstack/service-datasource, @objectstack/spec, touching 13 documentable anchor(s). ⚠️ 2 changed file(s) yielded no anchor (packages/drivers/driver-turso/README.md, packages/spec/src/data/datasource-credential-redaction.ts), so the pages documenting them are NOT COVERED by this run — this is not a clean bill of health for those files.

What this run could not see
  • 2 changed file(s) yielded no anchor (packages/drivers/driver-turso/README.md, packages/spec/src/data/datasource-credential-redaction.ts) — pages documenting those are invisible to this run
  • 5 name(s) were too generic to anchor anything (single lowercase words)
  • the SDK route bridge reached 54 of 206 client-bound route-ledger rows — the other 152 have no registrar path: tail to select them, so pages documenting THEIR client methods cannot appear above, on this or any run. Of those 152: 0 are remediable by widening that discovery convention (an in-repo file declares the path; the convention did not scan it); 55 are structural — on a ledger where NOT ONE row is declared in-repo, so no discovery change reaches them at any price; 97 are undecided (no in-repo declaration, on a ledger that has other in-repo registrars — absence and an unreadable spelling are not distinguishable here). The rows themselves: node scripts/docs-audit/affected-docs.mjs --bridge-coverage
  • a page that states a rule by its inputs shares no identifier with the emitter that implements the rule, so an emitter-only diff cannot list it — not on this run and not on any run. Measured on fix(driver-sql): emit varchar(maxLength) for a text field a declared index keys on #11430: content/docs/protocol/objectql/types.mdx documents the text-family column mapping by the ObjectQL type names it maps FROM (text / textarea / html) while the diff changed createColumn; it went unlisted, and it was the page that diff falsified, in four places. No shared token exists to detect this on, so a rule your change carries has to be re-read by hand in the pages that restate it.
  • a key NAME is not a key, so the hand re-read the line above prescribes can land on the wrong schema. The same spelling is authorable on one governed type and a [REMOVED] tombstone on another for each of active, aria, joins, objects, template, tools and version (censused on [finding] tools is a key on BOTH AgentSchema (tombstoned, dead) and SkillSchema (live, cloud-attested), so a name-based search attributes skill examples to the agent key — it produced a false stop-the-line alarm on PR #19059 #19093 over the liveness ledger's governed types, top-level keys); nothing in a search result distinguishes the two, so a grep hit on a LIVE example reads as evidence about the DEAD key. Measured on fix(spec): the agent.tools liveness row says dead — it claimed live on a key the schema tombstoned #19059: content/docs/ai/agents.mdx was reported as contradicting the agent.tools tombstone over its tools: example at :161, which is inside the defineSkill({ block opened at :155 — the page was already correct. Settle ownership by PARSING the value against both schemas, never by the name: that literal PASSES SkillSchema, and as an AgentSchema it FAILS at tools with the tombstone prescription. ⛔ These names are not the whole class — a key retired through a .strict() guidance map leaves no tombstone in the walked shape and none of them here (tool.category, live as AIToolDefinition.category).

Coarse fallback — 147 page(s) merely mention a changed package (the pre-#9192 predicate, kept for the deliberately-wide backstop): node scripts/docs-audit/affected-docs.mjs --json 2b1382a5b3887e4abd194411ef77a7cd368c95c2 → packageMentionDocs.

Which tree this was computed on

This run read content/docs from 9768300ae6e33c58cbeda2f8373964c66ff726d9 — the merge of head df6803d15923a60a4dc32700d36b563f1b30a4e9 into base 2b1382a5b3887e4abd194411ef77a7cd368c95c2, which is what actions/checkout gives a pull_request run. Not the PR head.

A worktree cut from an older main holds a different content/docs, so re-deriving there can legitimately return a different list — that is a different tree, not a wrong row. To answer on the same tree:

# while this PR is open — GitHub drops the merge commit once it closes
git fetch origin 9768300ae6e33c58cbeda2f8373964c66ff726d9 && git checkout 9768300ae6e33c58cbeda2f8373964c66ff726d9

⚠️ That checkout carried uncommitted changes, so the commit above does not fully identify what was read.

Advisory only, and a precision-first one (#9192): a page is listed because it names a
symbol, wire route or SDK method this diff touched — not because it mentions a changed

Inputs: card #25020 (body; comments 6306043862 triage, 6306742426 claim, 6307914195 dev report; no ruling comment exists), PR #25045 (body, 16-file list, net diff against the merge-base 3b3830ca2 — main has not moved on any of the 16 files since, and the only turso-adjacent movement, sqlite-driver-fallback.ts, builds no turso driver and no libSQL client), and the 40 check-runs on the head read once as they stand (below). Read-only: no worktree, no build, no test, no gate re-run.

Check-runs on d15981a07 as they stand (one read, not polled): 24 success — Lint & Repo Gates, Governed Surface Queue Guard, Check Changeset, Type Check · source gates, every Lint lane (CI/release/engine, ESLint, PM dispatch-gates, docs & code guards, repo & tooling, three scoped), Spec property liveness, Build Docs, Dogfood Regression Gate (the non-matrix run), Flag docs affected, Check Documentation Links, Check PR Size, Auto Label, filter, and the four claim/part-of guards. 10 in_progress — Build Core, Test Core 1/6 through 6/6, Type Check · consumer gates, Type Check · debt ledger, Type Check · workspace. 6 skipped — 18.x upgrade harness (opt-in), Console Pin Gate, Dogfood Regression Gate matrix shard, Dogfood Verify CLI, Packed-tarball smoke (opt-in), Temporal Conformance. Of the five required contexts, Lint & Repo Gates and Governed Surface Queue Guard are green; Build Core and Test Core are still running; the type-check job's source-gates lane is green and its three other lanes are still running. The verdict below does not rest on them: its FAIL item is a code reading that no green run contradicts, because no test on this head exercises the door.

① Derived judgments

1. TursoConfigSchema's accept set and its reach into DatasourceSchema — RIGHT for every local and replica shape; WRONG for one local-file shape (FAIL item 1 below). The new arm in tursoTransportIssues sits inside the mode !== 'remote' branch, after the url, in-memory-replica, forced-replica and forced-local refusals, and refuses a typeof string && length greater than 0 key on encryptionKey with one text per mode (${arm} is the only interpolation). It reaches DatasourceSchema through reportDriverConfigIssues (re-pathed config.encryptionKey), validateDriverConfig (config-registry.zod.ts:596), hence defineStack / os validate, and the admin save door (assertValidConfig at datasource-admin-service.ts:1031, plus recordRefusal, which parses the whole DatasourceSchema). An empty key is accepted (unset, as buildTursoDriverConfig reads it); a lone sync stays the refinement's first issue with this one second — all of it pinned in packages/spec/src/data/driver/turso.test.ts (ten refused shapes across two modes, order rows, both doors, controls, no-echo, the describe). The hole: tursoTransportModeOf returns a FORCED mode first, and the mode === 'remote' branch judges only timeoutMs and syncUrl — so { url: 'file:./data/app.db', mode: 'remote', encryptionKey: KEY } parses at every authoring door.

2. TursoDriver's constructor accept set — RIGHT for every local and replica shape; WRONG for the same shape. if (mode !== 'remote' && config.encryptionKey) refuseIgnoredSyncKey(localEncryptionKeyRefusal(mode)) is raised before super(), after the four sync-key refusals and the localEngineDefect / timeout refusals, so each config keeps the refusal that names its way out; createTursoDriver is new TursoDriver (index.ts:97); both loaders — runtime/turso-driver-factory.ts:288 and default-datasource-driver-factory.ts:1337 — and the CLI (storage-driver.ts loads the runtime factory) reach it through buildTursoDriverConfig. Pinned in the new refusal file: file:, FILE:, forced local, :memory:, createTursoDriver, and three replica shapes (driver-built client, supplied client, forced replica), each asserting code, status, the mode's first sentence and that no file exists afterwards; three controls round-trip a row and read the file back as SQLite format 3. The hole is the same guard: detectMode returns config.mode first, so a forced remote skips every local-engine refusal, this one included.

3. The mirror's byte-equality — RIGHT. Measured on the two head files: the tursoTransportIssues bodies differ only by two pre-existing mirror comments ("Unreachable through this mirror…", not this PR's); the encryptionKey arm and both describe strings are byte-identical. The parity table adds 8 key rows, 6 order rows and 2 empty-key accept rows, extends SYNC_KEY_REFUSALS to the new key, floors the local and replica halves apart (8 and 3) and the copied-message set at 31, and driverConfigOf drops an empty key the way the loaders do.

4. connect()'s replica arm no longer forwarding the key — RIGHT. After the constructor refusal a non-empty key cannot reach that createClient, and an empty one was already unset by the loaders; a forwarded key there would have been dead code that reads as a capability. createRemoteClient never forwarded it, before or after — which is what makes door 6 below a door.

5. The ADR-0087 semantic entry — RIGHT. 18.turso-config-local-encryption-key-refused.ts carries id, surface, replacement, reason, acceptanceCriteria; its file name is the major.id shard the registry builder derives (shardNameFor); no conversionIds, correctly — a refusal judges no mechanical D2 edit, and migrations.test.ts would refuse a fabricated one; no relevantWhen, so it is always listed (the conservative choice for a surface under datasources[].config); surface carries no backtick, as the upgrade-guide renderer needs. The changeset's adr-0087 marker names it registered, and check:spec-changes / check:upgrade-guide ran inside the green Lint & Repo Gates and Type Check · source gates. One nit, not blocking: reason names OS_ALLOW_DRIVER_CONNECT_FAILURE, the escape hatch connect-failure-remedy.ts deliberately never names even to warn against; an upgrade TODO that hands an upgrading agent the hatch is the opposite of that design — drop the clause.

6. The redaction comment — RIGHT, and incomplete. STILL_WRITABLE_CREDENTIAL_KEYS has exactly one consumer, redactableConfigKeys (datasource-credential-redaction.ts:383); a remote turso row still parses with the key and a stored local row may still carry one, so the key must stay on the list and stay redacted on read — the rewritten comment at lines 126–133 says so correctly. The module header at lines 58–62 was not rewritten and still says the key is "an AES-256 key … injected at connect", which is now false for every local and replica row (flag 8 in ③).

7. The five security answers.

  • (a) Doors — one still writes plaintext. ✔ new TursoDriver / createTursoDriver: a non-empty key on file: (any case, whitespace), :memory:, forced local, and on a replica (file: + syncUrl, supplied or driver-built client, forced replica) is refused before super(); no file is opened (pinned). ✔ Boot from defineStack: refused at parse (DatasourceSchema), and a config that reaches the loaders is refused at construction. ✔ A stored row: not re-parsed on load (no D2 conversion exists, by design); both loaders forward the key through buildTursoDriverConfig and the constructor refuses it — see (e). ✔ Admin save: assertValidConfig → issue at config.encryptionKey; recordRefusal parses the whole record. ✔ Admin test connection: probe → factory.create throws → ok: false, "Failed to build driver: …"; connect() is never reached. ✔ The CLI: storage-driver.ts resolves a turso definition from OS_DATABASE_URL / OS_DATABASE_AUTH_TOKEN (no key source) and loads the runtime host loader, the same constructor. ✔ libSQL client builders: the only two createClient sites on the head are in turso-driver.ts; the replica one is unreachable with a non-empty key and no longer forwards it; the Knex handle is built by toKnexConfig alone and carries no key. ✔ No example, skill, CLI scaffold, create-objectstack template or environment variable authors the key (grep on the head). ✗ Door 6 — a file: url under a forced mode: 'remote' with a non-empty key: { url: 'file:./data/app.db', mode: 'remote', encryptionKey: KEY } parses at every authoring door (judgment 1), constructs (judgment 2: toKnexConfig's remote arm opens nothing), and on connect() takes the remote arm: createRemoteClient() calls createClient({ url, authToken, concurrency }) with the key dropped, and @libsql/client opens the local file for a file: url — the driver's own reading of @libsql/core@0.18.0 in the startsWithScheme docblock, the row file: under a forced mode: 'remote' … ctor: 'accept' in the parity table (line 119) and the classification pin in turso-driver-unrecognised-url-refusal.test.ts:303 all treat that shape as a supported one. Every read and write then runs through RemoteTransport over that file: a local database file written in plaintext under a declared key, the card's defect exactly, with the key silently dropped — the outcome the card's Expected forbids. The claim's carve-out ("the remote (libsql://) mode, whose encryption is the server's") does not cover it: there is no server and no libsql:// url. No row in either test matrix carries a key under a forced remote, so no pin on this head exercises it. The :memory: variant of the same shape is accepted-and-dropped the same way and writes nothing to disk. This is FAIL item 1.
  • (b) Strip, coerce or ignore — none on the local and replica paths; one on door 6. buildTursoDriverConfig's reader keeps a non-empty string key unchanged and drops only an empty or non-string one (truthiness), which matches the spec's length greater than 0 and the constructor's truthiness test (a whitespace-only key is refused by both; a non-string is a type issue at the spec and truthy at the constructor). No ?? fallback, no coercion, no normalisation before the arm. The one strip-and-continue is createRemoteClient ignoring the key under door 6.
  • (c) No echo — RIGHT. Both builders (localEncryptionKeyRefusal in the driver, the arm in both schemas) interpolate ${arm} only: no url, no key, no issue id; refuseIgnoredSyncKey's header says the same of the family. The url refusals a key-bearing config meets first (order rows) echo only the scheme and the forced mode, never the url or the key. Pinned twice: spec never echoes the key or either url, driver the message names no url and no key.
  • (d) Envelope — RIGHT. refuseIgnoredSyncKey sets code = StandardErrorCode.enum.VALIDATION_ERROR and status = 400, the ADR-0112 shape; every constructor pin asserts both code and status. The authoring side is a zod custom issue on ['encryptionKey'], re-pathed config.encryptionKey under DatasourceSchema, which the admin door surfaces as Invalid configuration for driver 'turso'. config.encryptionKey: …; the spec pins assert path and message.
  • (e) A stored row fails closed — RIGHT. factory.create throws; datasource-connection-service.ts records failed-degraded with datasource 'NAME': connect failed — MESSAGE (lines 387, 489, 732, 986); under ADR-0062 D5 it throws fail-fast when objects bind or route to the datasource or it is boot-critical, unless OS_ALLOW_DRIVER_CONNECT_FAILURE is set, and otherwise warns and leaves it unconnected with state error in Setup → Datasources; a test connection answers ok: false. The row is never connected with the key dropped. (A row no object addresses is skipped by the D2 gate and never connected either — pre-existing, and not this defect.)

② Semver level

RIGHT. The changeset grades @objectstack/spec and @objectstack/driver-turso minor, BREAKING, with the FROM → TO table and the one-line fix; the title carries !; the PR body and the changeset both carry Clause-②: no (narrowing). That is what the diff publishes: the accept set of TursoConfigSchema (through DatasourceSchema), of the mirror and of new TursoDriver() narrows — a config that parsed and constructed is refused — and no key, export or symbol is added, removed or renamed (TursoTransportIssue.path and TursoTransportKeys are module-local; the schema shape is unchanged; the describe change regenerated content/docs/references/data/driver-turso.mdx, the one stale artifact). BREAKING-as-minor is the amended ruling the triage cites and check-changeset-no-major.mjs enforces; Check Changeset is green. The ADR-0087 disposition marker is present and names the registered entry. @objectstack/service-datasource changes no behaviour (a stale TSDoc only, flag 7) and owes no changeset. The FAIL item does not move the level: its fix is one more narrowing of the same face.

③ Boundary flags

FAIL item 1 (door 6, ① 7(a)). A file: url (or :memory:) under a forced mode: 'remote' with a non-empty encryptionKey is accepted at every authoring door and at construction, and connect() opens the local file through the native libSQL client with the key dropped: plaintext under a declared key. Fix in this PR, narrowly, so the claim's scope holds: decide the key refusal by where the file lives, not by the mode — in the spec's mode === 'remote' branch (and the mirror, byte for byte) an arm for a file: / :memory: url beside a non-empty key, and in the constructor the same predicate independent of mode — with its own text (in this mode the engine is the client the driver builds, which is handed no key), parity rows for file: and :memory: under a forced remote with a key (refused on encryptionKey), a constructor pin asserting no file exists, and the dev's ablation leg over the new arm. Route B (refuse the key in every mode) also closes it, but then the placeholder-family row and the redaction suites that author the key on libsql:// urls lose their home, and the claim's remote carve-out is overridden — declare it as a deviation if chosen.

The open question — remote mode after this PR. (i) Leaving the libsql:// remote mode accepting-and-dropping the key does NOT block this PR: the claim put that mode out of scope in writing, the card's measurement and title are the local file, and on a true remote url nothing is written in plaintext by this driver (the server's storage is the server's). It is a correct follow-up — but only for libsql:// / https:// / ws(s):// urls; a local url under a forced remote mode is inside the card (FAIL item 1). (ii) Recommended route: A — retire the key with a tombstone, as the follow-up card, through the spec-property-retirement kit. Why: measured on this head, zero producers author it; a key the runtime honours in no mode is the ADR-0049 removal case, and retiredKey() carries the prescription in every mode and on every door at once, keeping the liveness-ledger row; B leaves a published slot whose only purpose is to be refused — a key every AI author will still write — and makes the STILL_WRITABLE_CREDENTIAL_KEYS comment, the placeholder-family row and the redaction fixtures describe a value that parses nowhere; C leaves the accepted-and-dropped shape the card forbids on the one mode where it still exists. The retirement's cost (a dozen surfaces, fixtures re-homed, STILL_WRITABLE_CREDENTIAL_KEYS losing its only member) is the kit's ordinary cost, and it is the same work B would only defer.

Dev deviations, each answered. 1. File surface widened to the producer (packages/spec arm, test, ADR-0087 entry, redaction comment, placeholder fixture, docs): correct — the dispatch allowed it, and the parity test holds authoring equal to construction, so a constructor-only refusal would have reopened that class. 2. @objectstack/spec graded minor beside driver-turso: correct, the published schema narrows. 3. The replica arm no longer forwards the key: correct (① 4). 4. Replica with a key against a reachable sync server NOT MEASURED: accepted — the refusal fires at construction before any client exists, and the pin asserts no file; nothing this PR claims depends on it. 5. Six gates re-run at the same head after a full build: accepted; the head's check-runs are the gate verdicts here. 6. Model-free commit trailers and the session-URL body footer: the repo's own form; accepted.

Out-of-scope finding (remote mode accepts and drops the key; @libsql/client's remote client would refuse it with ENCRYPTION_KEY_NOT_SUPPORTED): class b, reach measured by the dev; escalated above as the follow-up (route A). It is not filed by this record: the seat routes it with the card's route choice.

Further findings, non-blocking, fix in this PR with item 1. 7. packages/services/service-datasource/src/turso-driver-config.ts:66 — TursoDriverConfigInput.encryptionKey, a public export of @objectstack/service-datasource (index.ts:149), still reads "AES-256 key for the local database file (local/replica modes)": the one promise the text sweep missed. 8. packages/spec/src/data/datasource-credential-redaction.ts:58-62 — the module header still says the key "stays injected at connect"; rewrite to match the table comment below it. 9. ① 5's nit on OS_ALLOW_DRIVER_CONNECT_FAILURE in the entry's reason. 10. Pre-existing, noted only: the mirror declares no mode, so forced-mode rows skip the mirror by design (parity header), and the only bytes by which the two tursoTransportIssues bodies differ are two mirror-side comments — neither is this PR's to change.

Seat review · domain:engine seat 2 · session_01QK6pdbxKZiHdFApL8RYVh9 · 2026-10-21T04:36Z · head d15981a07 · verdict: REWORK, patch round 1 (one blocking item, three riders).

  • The blocking item is FAIL item 1 of the contract review (6308116467). The seat confirmed it on this head.

    • file: under a forced mode: 'remote' is a supported, pinned shape. Its parity row ("file: under a forced mode: 'remote'") accepts it at construction, and turso-driver-unrecognised-url-refusal.test.ts classifies it remote.
    • The new constructor guard is mode !== 'remote' && config.encryptionKey (turso-driver.ts:2031). The spec's remote branch judges only timeoutMs and syncUrl.
    • So { url: 'file:…', mode: 'remote', encryptionKey } parses and constructs. connect() then hands the local file to createRemoteClient, which drops the key. That is this card's defect, on a local file.
    • The claim's carve-out names the libsql:// mode, whose encryption is the server's. A local file under a forced mode is inside this card.
  • The seat's route for it: refuse, judged by where the file lives, not by the mode. When the url is file: or :memory: and the key is non-empty, the spec arm, the mirror (byte for byte) and the constructor refuse it in every mode. The text is its own: under a forced remote mode, the engine is the libSQL client this driver builds, and that client is handed no key.

  • Riders. These are the review's findings 7–9, text this PR made false or touched. Fix them in the same push:

    • the TSDoc of TursoDriverConfigInput.encryptionKey (packages/services/service-datasource/src/turso-driver-config.ts:66), a published export. That package then needs a changeset entry, at the level Check Changeset accepts beside this PR's Clause-② line;
    • the module header of datasource-credential-redaction.ts (:58-62);
    • OS_ALLOW_DRIVER_CONNECT_FAILURE in the semantic entry's reason, and the same clause in the changeset's ADR-0062 D5 sentence.
  • Prose faces, checked by the seat sentence by sentence against this head:

    • the changeset's FROM → TO table;
    • its failed-degraded and "Failed to build driver: …" sentences (datasource-connection-service.ts:167, datasource-admin-plugin.ts:865);
    • the adr-0087 marker, which names the entry id turso-config-local-encryption-key-refused;
    • in drivers.mdx, the "six keys" table, the "four keys" restart condition and the remote sentence;
    • the regenerated reference row.

All of them hold on this head. The patch must keep them true. The describe, the remote sentence in drivers.mdx and the reference row need to cover the case of a file under a forced remote mode.

  • The open question on remote mode is answered. A libsql:// datasource that accepts and drops the key does not block this PR: the claim scoped it out in writing, and this driver writes nothing to disk for it. It is filed as turso: after #25020 a remote datasource's encryptionKey is still parsed and silently dropped, so the key is honoured in no mode; retire it (ADR-0049 enforce-or-remove) #25050. Both the dev and the reviewer recommend route A, retirement; the route is triage's to set.

  • The dev's deviations 1–6 stand as the review answered them.

  • Gates. At the review's read, this head had 24 checks success, 10 in_progress and 6 skipped. They are not judged further, because the patch push re-runs them.

  • Owed again on the new head: the full dogfood battery (! and (narrowing)), and a contract review re-rendered on that head (the patch edits the narrowing face).

The engine's own url reading was taken from the installed @libsql/core@0.18.0 (lib-esm/uri.js, lib-esm/config.js) in a sibling worktree's node_modules: a read, not a run. No worktree, no build, no test, no gate re-run, no ablation.

Check-runs on 4a595ed43 as they stand (one read at 2026-10-21T07:33Z, not polled): 49 runs, 41 success, 8 skipped, 0 failed, 0 running. Also green: Check Changeset (two runs), Spec property liveness, Build Docs, Dogfood Regression Gate (the non-matrix run), every Lint lane, Flag docs affected, Check Documentation Links, Check PR Size, Auto Label, filter, and the four claim / part-of guards (two runs each). Skipped, by design: 18.x upgrade harness (opt-in), Console Pin Gate, the Dogfood matrix shard, Dogfood Verify CLI, Packed-tarball smoke (opt-in), Temporal Conformance, and one superseded run each of Auto Label and Check PR Size. The dev's "36 success, 6 skipped" is the same set before the duplicate runs; nothing is red.

① Derived judgments

1. FAIL item 1 (door 6) is closed at every door — RIGHT.

  • The predicate. The constructor's guard at turso-driver.ts:2096 is config.encryptionKey && namesLocalDatabase(config.url), with namesLocalDatabase(url) = url === ':memory:' || isFileUrl(url) (:1643) and isFileUrl = startsWithScheme(url, 'file:') (:1618), which lowercases the first five characters of the url and compares. It no longer reads mode for the decision; mode only chooses the text (remoteModeLocalEncryptionKeyRefusal(url) under remote, the existing localEncryptionKeyRefusal(mode) otherwise). It is raised before super(), after the four sync-key refusals and the two timeout refusals.
  • The engine's local set, read at the source it is handed to. @libsql/core@0.18.0 config.js:21-26: a url that === ':memory:' exactly is rewritten to file::memory:; otherwise parseUri runs URI_RE, anchored ^ on a scheme [A-Za-z][A-Za-z.+-]* followed by :, and throws URL_INVALID on no match; the scheme is then compared lowercased, so file in any letter case is the local client. Nothing trims. The engine's local spellings are therefore exactly: the string :memory:, and any url whose first five characters fold to file:. That is namesLocalDatabase to the letter, and the spec's (isFileTursoUrl(url) || url === ':memory:') (turso.zod.ts:353) is the same test on cfg.url.trim() (:199).
  • Spellings, each read against both. Caught by the predicate and local to the engine: file:…, FILE:…, File:…, file://… (with an authority), file:…?query, file::memory:, FILE::memory:, file::memory:?cache=shared, file: beside timeout, and :memory:. Not caught by the predicate: :MEMORY:, :memory:?cache=shared, and any url behind leading whitespace ( file:…, :memory:). Each of those is also NOT local to the engine: the :memory: rewrite is an exact comparison and URI_RE takes no leading whitespace and no leading colon, so createClient throws URL_INVALID before opening anything, and no file is written. Through the loaders those spellings do not arise at all: resolveTursoUrl trims (turso-driver-config.ts:243), as the spec does. No spelling that the engine opens as a local database escapes the predicate: the door is closed, not narrowed.
  • Construction, every entry. createTursoDriver is new TursoDriver (index.ts:97, unchanged). Both loaders go through buildTursoDriverConfig, which forwards mode as authored (:211-212), a non-empty string key unchanged (:172-173) and the trimmed url (:243), so a stored row { url: 'file:…', mode: 'remote', encryptionKey } reaches the constructor in that shape and is refused; the CLI (storage-driver.ts) loads the runtime host loader and has no key source (unchanged, carried). Under a forced remote, toKnexConfig's remote arm (:2296-2300) carries no connection, so Knex opens nothing even for the accepted controls; the one file-opening path, connect() → createRemoteClient() → createClient({ url, authToken, concurrency, fetch? }) (:2343-2351), is never reached by a refused config, and still forwards no key (the only code use of encryptionKey in the driver is the guard at :2096). Pinned in the refusal file's new describe: file:, FILE: and file: + timeout under mode: 'remote' (code, status, the file first sentence, existsSync(path) === false); :memory: and file::memory: (the in-memory first sentence); createTursoDriver (no echo of private-dir / private-key-value).
  • Authoring, every door. The spec's tursoTransportIssues remote branch gains the arm at :352-377, pushed after timeoutMs (:329) and syncUrl (:341), one custom issue on encryptionKey with one of two literal texts chosen by namesInMemoryTursoDatabase(url). tursoTransportModeOf answers a forced mode first (:172), so for these urls the branch is reached only by a forced remote (with no mode they select the local engine and meet the local arm, unchanged). The superRefine (:575-593) raises the arm through TursoConfigSchema, which reportDriverConfigIssues re-paths to config.encryptionKey under DatasourceSchema, and validateDriverConfig returns on encryptionKey — both doors pinned in turso.test.ts with mode: 'remote'. defineStack / os validate, the admin save (assertValidConfig) and recordRefusal parse that schema; the admin test door goes through factory.create, i.e. the constructor (unchanged, carried).
  • The mirror. Carries the same arm byte for byte (judgment 5).

2. The new texts — RIGHT. remoteModeLocalEncryptionKeyRefusal(url) (:1549-1567) reads url only to choose between two string literals; neither interpolates anything, so no url, no key and no issue id can appear; the spec's arm is the same pair of literals. Both name the forced remote mode and the client that is handed no key; the file text names what does encrypt (an encrypted disk or volume, or a remote database); the in-memory text says there is no file to encrypt and stops at "Drop encryptionKey". The envelope is refuseIgnoredSyncKey (:1579-1584): code = StandardErrorCode.enum.VALIDATION_ERROR, status = 400. Both new constructor describes assert code and status; the spec's issue is custom on ['encryptionKey'], and the DatasourceSchema pin reads it at config.encryptionKey.

3. The order, and nothing widened — RIGHT. Constructor: REMOTE_MODE_SYNC_URL_REFUSAL (:2066) and SYNC_WITHOUT_SYNC_URL_REFUSAL (:2069) precede the key arm (:2096); refuseWebSocketTimeout fires only for a ws(s):// url and refuseSuppliedClientTimeout only beside a supplied client, so file: + timeout under mode: 'remote' reaches the key arm (pinned). Spec: a lone sync is the superRefine's first issue (:579), then tursoTransportIssues pushes syncUrl and then encryptionKey, so the two-issue shapes answer [syncUrl, encryptionKey] and [sync, encryptionKey] (pinned in turso.test.ts, and in the parity table as two order rows with issues: 2). Nothing refused at d15981a07 is accepted now: in a local or replica mode every url that reaches the key arm is already :memory: or a file: url, because localEngineDefect (:1716-1720) refused hasRemotePrefix(url) and url !== ':memory:' && !isFileUrl(url) first — so there namesLocalDatabase is the old mode !== 'remote' guard exactly; under a forced remote the arm only adds refusals. In the spec the local / replica branch is byte-unchanged and the remote branch pushes one more issue with no early return removed. The accept set at 4a595ed43 is a subset of the one at d15981a07.

4. The controls — RIGHT. libsql://db.example.invalid with a key constructs in remote mode, auto-detected and forced (namesLocalDatabase is false for it; pinned in the refusal file and as two parity accept rows), and parses (isFileTursoUrl false; pinned) — #25050's mode, untouched. An empty key is unset: falsy at the constructor, a length-greater-than-zero test that fails at the spec, dropped by buildTursoDriverConfig (:172); pinned under a forced remote in both suites. :memory: with no key under mode: 'remote' constructs (pinned) and parses (pinned). The three round-0 controls (local, empty key, replica, each writing a plain SQLite format 3 file) are unchanged.

5. The mirror — RIGHT, and its remote arm is unreachable as claimed. The mirror's TursoConfigSchema is z.object(...) (:356), which strips unknown keys, and declares no mode key (none in the object; the header at :107-111 says so); its superRefine (:472-491) passes the parsed cfg to tursoTransportIssues, so cfg.mode is undefined, tursoTransportModeOf (:142-146) answers local for a file: url or :memory: (replica beside syncUrl), and the local arm's key refusal fires on encryptionKey in the local or replica text. So the parity table's claim holds: the mirror refuses { url: 'file:…', mode: 'remote', encryptionKey } through its local arm. A remote url never satisfies the new arm's url test, so the mirror's copy of the remote arm cannot fire — kept byte-identical for copy parity, like its other forced-mode branches, and the parity table skips the mirror's verdict for every forced-mode row by design. Measured on the two head files: the two tursoTransportIssues bodies differ only by the two pre-existing "Unreachable through this mirror" comments; the new arm and both describe strings are byte-identical.

6. Findings 7–9 — fixed. 7: turso-driver-config.ts:66-72, the TSDoc of the exported TursoDriverConfigInput.encryptionKey, now says the key is passed through as authored and honoured in no mode, refused beside a file: url or :memory: in every mode (VALIDATION_ERROR / 400), and not forwarded to a remote database — true against the reader at :172-173 and the constructor. 8: the redaction module header (datasource-credential-redaction.ts:57-65) no longer says the key is "injected at connect"; it now says it is refused for a local file and honoured in no mode, while a remote datasource still parses with it and a stored row may carry it — consistent with the STILL_WRITABLE_CREDENTIAL_KEYS table comment at :126-133, which is unchanged. 9: OS_ALLOW_DRIVER_CONNECT_FAILURE is gone from the entry's reason and from the changeset's ADR-0062 D5 sentence; across the 17 files at the head its only mention is drivers.mdx:282, in the pre-existing "Startup" section that this PR's two hunks (lines 195–201 and 222–249) do not touch.

7. The prose the round changed — true against the code. The describe in both schemas and the regenerated reference row: "refused for a local or replica datasource … and for a file: url or :memory: under a forced remote mode, whose libSQL client is handed no key; a remote database's storage encryption is the server's" — true (judgments 1, 4). drivers.mdx's remote sentence: a libsql:// / https:// / ws(s):// datasource still parses with the key, which the driver does not forward, while a file: url or :memory: under mode: 'remote' is refused "like a local one, because the libSQL client the driver builds for it is handed no key", and a stored value is redacted on read — true. The README's two additions and the design doc's table row say the same — true. The TursoDriverConfig.encryptionKey TSDoc in the driver — true. The changeset: "narrows by one key beside a file: url or :memory:, in every mode", the added FROM → TO row, the one-line fix ("every turso datasource whose url is a file: url or :memory:"), and the service-datasource patch sentence ("nothing else in it changes") — true (the whole net diff of that package is the TSDoc block, +7 / −1). The entry's surface ("the same url under any forced mode, remote included") and reason — true. The describes in the three test files — true. One nit, non-blocking (③ 11): the remote-url lists in drivers.mdx, the changeset, the entry and the driver docblock name libsql://, https:// and ws(s):// and omit http://, which REMOTE_URL_PREFIXES (:1611) and the spec's prefix list also classify as remote and which this refusal equally does not judge — incomplete, not false.

8. What carries over from 6308116467 unchanged. git diff d15981a07 4a595ed43 --stat lists 14 of the 17 files; docs/qa/platform-checklist/areas/integration-system.json, packages/drivers/driver-turso/src/spec/turso.test.ts and packages/spec/src/data/driver/driver-placeholder-refusal.test.ts are untouched, and so is every cited file outside the diff (main has not moved on any of them). Inside the 14, the hunks are the ones judged above; the regions they do not touch — the spec's and the mirror's local / replica branch, the four sync-key refusals, localEngineDefect, detectMode, toKnexConfig, createRemoteClient, connect() (its replica arm still forwards no key), the entry's id, replacement and acceptanceCriteria, the redaction table comment, the round-0 pins — are byte-unchanged. So these judgments of the previous record carry over as written: 1 and 2 for every local and replica shape; 3 (the byte-equality basis and the round-0 rows); 4 (the replica arm); 5 (the entry's structure: shard name, no conversionIds, no relevantWhen, backtick-free surface, the registered marker — its text re-read above); 6 (the table comment); 7(b) (no strip or coerce on the local and replica paths — and the one strip-and-continue it named, door 6, is now a refusal); 7(c), 7(d), 7(e); every tick of 7(a); the ② basis for @objectstack/spec and @objectstack/driver-turso; and the answers to the round-0 deviations 1–6.

② Semver level

RIGHT. @objectstack/spec and @objectstack/driver-turso stay minor, BREAKING, with the FROM → TO table (one row added) and the one-line fix; the title carries !; the PR body and the changeset carry Clause-②: no (narrowing); the adr-0087 marker names the registered entry. That is what the diff publishes: the accept set of TursoConfigSchema (through DatasourceSchema) and of new TursoDriver() narrows further than at d15981a07 (judgment 3), the mirror's accept set is narrowed from BASE by the same key (the forced-remote shape was already refused through its local arm), and no key, export or symbol is added, removed or renamed. @objectstack/service-datasource graded patch is right: its entire net diff is the TSDoc block at turso-driver-config.ts:66-72; no accept set, no runtime path and no exported symbol moves, and the published .d.ts changes in comment text only, which is what patch means. The gate agrees on this head: under a carried Clause-②: no (narrowing) line, check-changeset-no-major.mjs's judgeLevel takes the discharged lane when a moved package is graded minor and others patch (exit 0, the residual printed, not refused — its enforce lane needs NO moved package at minor or above), and Check Changeset is success on 4a595ed43 in both of its runs. The dev's --base origin/main --event reading ("patch … NOT refused") is that lane.

③ Boundary flags

FAIL items: none. Door 6 of record 6308116467 is closed by the route the seat set (6308149967): the key is judged by where the database lives, at the spec, the mirror and the constructor, and no createClient call is handed it.

Dev deviations of the patch-round report 6310372472, each answered. 1. No PR body PATCH by the dev, the replacement left for the seat: the PR body read for this record is the round-1 body (it names patch round 1 and head 4a595ed43), so the seat's write landed as the role file requires; accepted. 2. One mode-independent predicate choosing its text by mode, identical to the old guard in a local or replica mode: correct (judgments 1 and 3). 3. Ablation leg D taken through source, and the new remote arm in the spec and the mirror not ablated: accepted — one leg was ordered, over the constructor arm; the spec's arm is held by five refusal cases, two order cases and both doors in turso.test.ts under a green Test Core, and the mirror's copy is unreachable and held byte-equal, so no leg could turn it red. 4. The in-memory text adds no remedy beyond "Drop encryptionKey": correct, an in-memory database has no file to place on an encrypted volume. 5. An interrupted dogfood run left uncounted, and stale pid files removed by literal path: accepted; nothing this record rests on depends on it, and the head's Dogfood Regression Gate is green.

The out-of-scope finding (a remote url accepts and drops the key) is #25050's, as the seat filed it; the accept controls pinned here for libsql:// with a key are the rows that route will turn red on purpose, as the dev says.

Further findings, non-blocking. 11. The remote-url lists in the prose (judgment 7) omit http://; a one-word completion in a later pass, not this PR's defect. 12. Noted only, pre-existing: the constructor does not trim url, while the spec (:199) and the loaders (:243) do. A direct new TursoDriver({ url: ' file:…', mode: 'remote', encryptionKey }) is therefore accepted at construction and refused by @libsql/core's parseUri at connect() (URL_INVALID, nothing opened); no loader or authoring door produces that spelling, and in a local or replica mode the same url is refused on url by localEngineDefect. No door opens or writes a file through it. 13. Carried from 6308116467 (its 10): the mirror declares no mode, so forced-mode rows skip the mirror by design — pre-existing, not this PR's to change.

Seat review · domain:engine seat 2 · session_01QK6pdbxKZiHdFApL8RYVh9 · 2026-10-21T07:35Z · head 4a595ed43 · verdict: REWORK, patch round 2 (one changeset sentence). Everything else ACCEPTs on this head.

  • The contract review on this head is PASS (6310634449). FAIL item 1 is closed at every door, findings 7–9 are fixed, and ② is right (spec and driver-turso minor BREAKING, service-datasource patch for its TSDoc).

  • The one item: a changeset sentence this round made false. The changeset ships in the CHANGELOG. It says: "The message is the same text at all three places, and a test holds the constructor's copy equal to the schema's issue byte for byte."

    • For a local or replica datasource that holds.
    • For the shape this round added, { url: 'file:…' or ':memory:', mode: 'remote', encryptionKey }, it does not. The spec and the constructor give the forced-remote text. The driver mirror declares no mode and strips it, so it refuses the same config in the local text (the review's judgment 5).
    • Fix: say which text each place gives for that shape. Change no other sentence.
  • Prose faces, checked by the seat against this head:

    • in the changeset: the Clause-② line, the service-datasource patch sentence, the "judged by where the database lives" sentence, the added FROM → TO row, the one-line fix, and the ADR-0062 D5 sentence with the hatch removed;
    • in drivers.mdx, the remote sentence;
    • the regenerated reference row.

All of them hold, apart from the sentence above.

  • Noted, not reworked: the remote-url lists omit http:// (the review's nit 11). That is incomplete, not false, and the same list stands in non-prose files.

  • Owed on the new head:

    • The contract review record 6310634449 keeps governing, because the push moves the head on a prose face alone. The PR must say so on a Regen-provenance: line.
    • CI green.
    • The full dogfood battery (! and (narrowing)), pinned to the new head.

domain:engine seat 2 · session_01QK6pdbxKZiHdFApL8RYVh9 · 2026-10-21T07:38Z. Patch round 2 touches .changeset/25020-turso-encryption-key-local.md alone (git diff --name-only 4a595ed43 df6803d15 lists that one file), so the PASS record 6310634449 keeps governing the new head. The seat checked the rewritten sentence against the review's judgment 5 and the parity table: for a local or replica datasource the three texts are equal; under a forced remote mode the schema and the constructor give the forced-remote text and the mirror gives the local text; the parity table compares the mirror only for rows where no mode is forced. It holds.

Seat review · domain:engine seat 2 · session_01QK6pdbxKZiHdFApL8RYVh9 · 2026-10-21T08:36Z · head df6803d15 · verdict: ACCEPT. The CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER record 6310634449 (PASS on 4a595ed43) is adopted, and it carries over to this head under the prose-only Regen-provenance: line 6310718106.

  • Shape. A draft PR to main from the claimed branch claude/issue-25020-turso-encryption-key-local. Its only card keyword is Fixes #25020, and the merge closes the card. Line 2 is Clause-②: no (narrowing). The libsql:// remote mode was out of the claim's scope and is filed as turso: after #25020 a remote datasource's encryptionKey is still parsed and silently dropped, so the key is honoured in no mode; retire it (ADR-0049 enforce-or-remove) #25050.
  • Rounds.
    • Round 0 (d15981a07) failed review 6308116467 on door 6, a file: url or :memory: under a forced mode: 'remote'.
    • Round 1 (4a595ed43) judges the key by where the database lives, at the spec, the mirror and the constructor, and it fixed findings 7–9. Review 6310634449 passed it.
    • Round 2 (df6803d15) rewrote one changeset sentence that round 1 had made false: what the mirror says for the forced-remote shape. git diff --name-only 4a595ed43 df6803d15 lists only that file.
  • Gates on this head.
    • 42 check-runs: 36 success, 6 skipped. All 6 skips are in main's roster (check-expected-skips.mjs --pr 25045: OK).
    • check-governed-merges.mjs --pr 25045: NOT governed, +996/−51.
    • The dev's 121 derived families all exit 0 at df6803d15.
    • The full dogfood battery on this head: VERDICT command-exit 0, 284 files passed and 3 skipped, 2361 tests passed and 18 skipped.
  • Prose faces, checked by the seat sentence by sentence.
    • The changeset: the Clause-② line, the service-datasource patch sentence, the "judged by where the database lives" sentence, the rewritten mirror sentence (true against the review's judgment 5 and the parity table), the FROM → TO table and one-line fix, and the ADR-0062 D5 sentence with no escape hatch.
    • drivers.mdx: the four-key restart condition and the remote sentence.
    • The regenerated reference row.
  • Accepted deviations.
    • The surface was widened to the producer (packages/spec) under the dispatch's producer rule.
    • @objectstack/spec is graded minor, and @objectstack/service-datasource patch for its TSDoc.
    • A replica against a reachable sync server is NOT MEASURED. The refusal fires at construction.
    • The PR body was written by the seat, as the role file requires.
  • Noted, no carrier.
    • The remote-url lists omit http://: incomplete, not false.
    • The constructor does not trim url, while the spec and the loaders do. No door opens a file through that.
  • Landing. This seat flips the PR to ready and arms auto-merge through the relay now. At the merge, turso: a local-mode datasource's declared encryptionKey is never applied, so the database file is written in plaintext that any SQLite reader opens without the key #25020 closes via Fixes and its pm:dispatched is removed.
