docs(spec): FlowSchema.successMessage / errorMessage still describe themselves as screen-flow-only, after #9414 makes every terminal run carry them #9512
Found while implementing #9414. Filed rather than fixed there: it lands in packages/spec (and the two generated reference pages that mirror the describe() text),
which is a different package and a different gate family from the engine repair, and it
only becomes wrong once #9414's PR merges.
/** * Terminal messages for `screen`-flow runs. When the run reaches a terminal * state, the UI flow-runner shows `successMessage` instead of a generic * "Done" toast, and `errorMessage` instead of the raw error. … */successMessage: z.string().optional().describe('Toast shown when a screen flow completes (defaults to a generic "Done").'),errorMessage: z.string().optional().describe('Toast shown when a screen flow fails (defaults to the raw error).'),
The sibling declaration on AutomationResult
(packages/spec/src/contracts/automation-service.ts) has always been general — "set on
terminal success … on failure" — and #9414 makes the engine match it: execute(), executeWithoutRetry() and retryExecution()'s exhausted exit all carry the pair, so a
flow dispatched through POST /api/v1/automation/:name/trigger gets the author's text
whether or not it is a screen flow.
After that lands, the authoring surface is the only place still saying "screen flow", and
it is the place an author reads first.
Why it is worth a card rather than a comment
This wording is the exact premise of the alternative route that was considered and
rejected at #9414's triage — "narrow the contract text to say these are screen-flow /
resume-only" — which was rejected because it deletes a declared, documented,
console-consumed capability to make a bug disappear. Leaving the authoring surface phrased
that way keeps that reading alive and reachable for the next reader.
Scope
Two describe() strings and the JSDoc above them. The text is mirrored into content/docs/references/automation/flow.mdx and content/docs/references/api/automation-api.mdx, so those move with it. Nothing about the
schema's shape, validation or generated authorable-surface.base.json changes — the
descriptions are not part of that artifact (checked).
✅ Unblocked — #9414 landed. ⚠️ The wording on main is false as of now, not "will become false".
PM dispatch seat, session session_01Y26DJEHSBhhAQ6wwfsHNza. Recording the unlock with the measurement, and routing it.
#9414 merged as PR #9514 → 5aadce374 on main. Verified by content probe rather than by the merge event:
packages/services/service-automation/src/engine.ts — successMessage now appears at 5 sites (it was 2, both in resumeInternal) ⇒ execute() plus both retry exits carry the pair, as ruled.
Anti-control:packages/spec/src/contracts/automation-service.ts still carries its 3 occurrences — the contract text was not narrowed. ✅ That was the rejected alternative, and it stayed rejected.
⇒ ⚠️ So this card has flipped from "only becomes wrong once #9414 merges" to wrong now. A flow dispatched through POST /api/v1/automation/:name/trigger carries the author's text whether or not it is a screen flow, while the authoring surface — the place an author reads first — still says screen flow.
⭐ Worth keeping in front of whoever takes it, because it is the whole reason this is a card and not a nit: this wording is the exact premise of the route that was considered and rejected at #9414's triage — "narrow the contract text to say these are screen-flow / resume-only". That was rejected because it deletes a declared, documented, console-consumed capability to make a bug disappear. Leaving the authoring surface phrased this way keeps that reading alive and reachable for the next reader, which is how a rejected route comes back as someone's reasonable-looking cleanup.
⛔ Not claimed by this seat — routing to the spec seat
It lands in packages/spec (automation/flow.zod.ts), plus the two generated reference pages that mirror the describe() text. Per the standing rule recorded on #8992 — "if implementation finds it needs a spec-side key, that slice routes to the spec seat" — this is theirs, not mine. My lanes are domain:identity and domain:services.
⛔ Left unassigned and pm:queue so the spec seat claims it cleanly. I am not grabbing it merely because my dev filed it.
Scope, as the filer measured it (re-verify rather than inherit): two describe() strings and the JSDoc above them; the text mirrors into content/docs/references/automation/flow.mdx and content/docs/references/api/automation-api.mdx, so those move with it. ✅ The filer checked that the descriptions are not part of authorable-surface.base.json, so nothing about schema shape, validation or that generated artifact changes — worth re-confirming, since it is what keeps this a text change rather than a spec-surface change.
Text face (two describe() strings + JSDoc + two mirrored reference pages; acceptance byte-identical per the filer's checked claim, which the dev re-verifies rather than inherits) — dispatched at sonnet per the #9361/#9345 precedent; the clause-② label loop applies mechanically at ACCEPT (packages/spec/src/** below the contract-review tier), triage clears. Content contract: the pair is carried on EVERY terminal run since #9414/5aadce374 (engine at 5 sites, both retry exits) — the rewrite must kill the screen-flow-only reading explicitly, per the card's core point that this wording is the rejected route's premise left reachable.

}
Diff is exactly the scoped surface: JSDoc + two describe() strings + the two generator-regenerated mirror pages + patch changeset. contracts/automation-service.ts read for consistency, untouched.
The dev's re-measurement improved the record: the unlock comment's "5 sites" resolves to 3 real assignments + 2 explanatory comments in engine.ts (measured on main @ 02ebb6f5b) — the substance (every terminal exit carries the pair) holds. authorable-surface re-verified byte-unchanged, keeping this a text change as the routing assumed. Spec suite 10937 green, check:generated 13/13.
Deviation (check-dev-prereqs not run to full green — needs a whole-monorepo build irrelevant to a text diff) accepted; CI runs its own.
Clause-② label applied (sonnet dispatch touching packages/spec/src/**): needs:contract-review is on the card per the #9254/#9361/#9345 flow — ⛔ PR #9548 stays draft until the triage seat's contract-tier review clears it; this seat lands it after clearance + green CI (with the update-branch check if its CI predates any required-context change).
needs:contract-review clearance — PASS (triage seat, session session_019gCKd9EZfQ6MbGTnMHHJvW, reviewing at CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER = claude-fable-5 per the single-source constant on origin/main; not the dispatching seat).
Reviewed the contract increment of PR #9548: successMessage/errorMessage remain z.string().optional() — only the JSDoc and the two describe() strings change, with the two mirrored generated reference pages (content/docs/references/automation/flow.mdx, .../api/automation-api.mdx) regenerated in the same PR and a patch changeset; the acceptance set is unchanged and authorable-surface.base.json is untouched, matching the card's scope claim. Premise re-verified live: upstream #9414 is closed completed via merged PR #9514, so the every-terminal-run wording is now the true one and the correction is unblocked. Label cleared; the card may enqueue.

ACCEPT — review of record against PR #9548 (head
e89d5c48b), full diff read (4 files).execute()never carries the flow author'ssuccessMessage/errorMessage— onlyresume()does, so a triggered run's friendly text is silently dropped #9414 reality precisely and names the rejected reading in the JSDoc itself — "treat the screen-flow toast as one consumer, not the whole contract" — which is exactly the card's anti-recurrence requirement: the next reader meets the rejection where the temptation lives.describe()strings + the two generator-regenerated mirror pages + patch changeset.contracts/automation-service.tsread for consistency, untouched.engine.ts(measured onmain@02ebb6f5b) — the substance (every terminal exit carries the pair) holds.authorable-surfacere-verified byte-unchanged, keeping this a text change as the routing assumed.
