/import upsert: two rows of one file with the same matchFields key both insert, so the file writes a duplicate and every later run answers AMBIGUOUS_MATCH #26133

Closed

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filing gate: ① product defect with reach (REST /import, measured on 18.1.0 with @objectstack/verify, sqlite).

Business reason. Legacy spreadsheets routinely carry the same certificate (or contact) twice — once typed ISO 9001, once ISO9001, or simply pasted twice. An upsert import keyed on matchFields is supposed to make re-running a file safe, but when the duplicate is inside the file itself both rows are inserted. The object now holds two rows with the same business key, and from then on every import of that key fails with AMBIGUOUS_MATCH until someone finds and deletes the extra row by hand. Found while re-pinning hotsrm's messy-ledger import trial on 18.1.0: 18.1.0 now accepts ISO9001 as the option value iso9001 (good), which turned a refused row into a silent duplicate.

Who acts. The seat owning the REST /import upsert path (row matching against matchFields).

Repro (18.1.0)

Object with no unique index over the match key (here a certificate: supplier lookup, cert_type select, cert_no text).

POST /api/v1/data/srm_supplier_certificate/import
{ "format": "csv", "writeMode": "upsert", "matchFields": ["supplier", "cert_type", "cert_no"], "csv": <file below>, "mapping": {...} }
file results rows in the object afterwards
two identical rows ISO 9001, A-1 created, created 2 × (iso9001, A-1)
ISO 14001, B-1 then ISO14001, B-1 created, created 2 × (iso14001, B-1)
re-run a file with one row ISO 14001, B-1 failed: AMBIGUOUS_MATCH unchanged

Expected: the second row with an already-seen match key either updates the row the first one created (as a re-run would) or fails with a per-row code that names the earlier row (e.g. DUPLICATE_MATCH_KEY_IN_FILE), so an upsert import never creates two rows with one key.

Objects with a unique index over the key are not affected (the second row gets UNIQUE_VIOLATION), so this hits the common case of a business key that is unique only by convention.

Dedupe

Searched objectstack-ai/objectstack issues (open + closed) for "import upsert two rows in the same file with the same match key both inserted duplicate" (13 hits, none about in-file duplicates: #25475/#25577 create-only columns, #25476/#25578 alternative match keys, driver upsert re-key findings) and "/import matchFields rows earlier in the same import not matched, second row creates a duplicate record" (8 hits, none relevant). Related but different: #25477 (conditional unique / same-batch guards on summary fields).

    ⛔ Not a claim, ⛔ not a dispatch.

    • p2: an upsert import that duplicates its own in-file key leaves the object permanently AMBIGUOUS_MATCH for that key. Detect duplicate matchFields keys within one file before any write, and refuse those rows with a row-level error naming both row numbers (or the configured policy). One file must never write two rows for one key.

Option (a) (every row of the key refused) recommended and implemented: nothing to guess, dry run == write by construction, re-running a fixed file safe either way. Update mode included (measured at base: two rows of one stored key answered updated, updated for the same id, last row silently wins); insert mode unchanged. Per the seat ruling (server seat 2 thread, 2026-10-26T14:56Z) the check applies to unique-index objects too: at base they answered created + UNIQUE_VIOLATION on the write and created, created on the dry run; now DUPLICATE_MATCH_KEY on both halves. 2026-10-26T17:03Z · domain:server seat 2 · seat ruling, posted here for the record (given to the dev in the seat thread at 2026-10-26T14:56Z; the os-dev report and PR #26250 cite it):

    Apply the pre-write duplicate-key check to every object, objects with a unique index over the key included. The order's line about unique-index objects was the seat's wording, meant to protect files without in-file duplicates, not to keep UNIQUE_VIOLATION for in-file duplicates. A runner-side copy of the engine's uniqueness rules is a mirror shape we do not build, and a dry run that answers what the import answers is the better contract. So this is not a needs_decision. The measured before/after for a unique-index object (real run and dry run) is pinned in a test. Option (a) and the update-mode extension are accepted as measured; insert mode is unchanged. This rests on triage ruling 6417860878 (detect before any write, no object-class exception).

    • Landed: an update or upsert import refuses every row that shares its coerced match key with another row of the same file, with DUPLICATE_MATCH_KEY naming all of them, and writes none of them, on a dry run as on the import and on every object. DUPLICATE_MATCH_KEY is in the error-code ledger.
    • Remains: none on this card. One pre-existing corner is recorded in the ACCEPT (a self-object lookup key column naming a row the same file creates earlier).
    • State: closed by the merge. The card thread is done.
