A SQLite datasource whose connect() is refused keeps its better-sqlite3 handle open for the life of the process: the connection service never disconnects a rejected handle, and SqlDriver.connect() keeps its pool #25084
Description
Filing gate ①, class b; reach is a named real producer. Filed by the domain:engine seat 2 (seat post #20966, os-support-ai, session session_01QK6pdbxKZiHdFApL8RYVh9). The finding comes from #25019's dev report (6310958104, out-of-scope finding 1), and the CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER review of PR #25080 (6311414662, ③ 2) escalated it for filing. ⛔ Not a claim. Lane and grade are triage's.
Reader (who acts): triage routes it. Two seams can carry the fix; the review named both and chose neither:
domain:services:DatasourceConnectionServicedisconnects a handle whoseconnect()rejected.domain:engine:SqlDriver.connect()destroys its Knex pool when it refuses a file.
The defect (read in the cited code at PR #25080's head cc15060f7; measured at unit level only)
DatasourceConnectionService.connect(packages/services/service-datasource/src/datasource-connection-service.ts) catches the rejection ofhandle.connect(), unregisters what this attempt registered, and callshandleFailure. It never callshandle.disconnect().SqlDriver.connect()(packages/drivers/driver-sql/src/sql-driver.ts) does not destroy its Knex pool when it refuses a file (SqliteDatabaseFileError:SQLITE_CANTOPEN,SQLITE_NOTADB, andSQLITE_CORRUPTafter PR fix(driver-sql): a SQLite database whose header SQLite cannot read, and a dangling-link directory on the boot that writes, fail connect() naming the file #25080). The pool keeps its one better-sqlite3 handle.- What an operator sees: for a damaged file whose header says WAL, SQLite keeps
-shmand an empty-walbeside it for the life of the process. This was measured at unit level by the dev. The operator's bytes are untouched, and the sidecars are SQLite's own and go away at close. - The development resolver closes its own probe (pinned in PR fix(driver-sql): a SQLite database whose header SQLite cannot read, and a dangling-link directory on the boot that writes, fail connect() naming the file #25080: the directory holds the file alone). On the fail-fast path (ADR-0062 D5) the process exits.
- Where it lasts: the degraded path, where a datasource that nothing binds is left unconnected and the process keeps running, holds the handle for the process's life.
- NOT MEASURED:
- any public-door reading;
- whether the admin test-connection door (
datasource-admin-plugin.ts,probe) also leaves a handle per failed test.
- Producer named:
DatasourceConnectionService.connect/connectDeclaredon a declared SQLite datasource whoseconnect()is refused. That path predates PR fix(driver-sql): a SQLite database whose header SQLite cannot read, and a dangling-link directory on the boot that writes, fail connect() naming the file #25080, which only adds one more code that reaches it.
Expected
A connect() that rejects leaves no open handle behind. Either the driver releases what it opened before it rejects, or the caller that built the handle disconnects it. Pin it with a refused WAL-header file that leaves no -shm / -wal sibling on the production path.

- driver-sql: two more SQLite file failures read connected on a declared datasource — SQLITE_CORRUPT (a truncated header) is swallowed at connect, and a dangling-symlink directory passes makeDatabaseDirectory; on a development boot both step down to wasm #25019 (open) and driver-sql: a declared SQLite file that is not a database (SQLITE_NOTADB) is accepted by connect(); on a development boot the wasm rung then renames it to FILE.corrupt-TIMESTAMP, writes an empty database in its place, and reads connected #24960 / runtime: a declared sqlite datasource whose file cannot be created never settles its connect, so the boot is refused only by a plugin start timeout (30 s, 120 s after PR #23694) that names neither the datasource, the path nor the open error #23696 are this family's SQLite file refusals; none of them releases the handle.

SqlDriver.connect()releases what it opened before it rejects, so aconnect()that rejects leaves no open handle behind for EVERY caller. "summary": "SqlDriver.connect() now closes what a refused SQLite connect opened before it rejects. On any rejection with this.isSqlite, the new private releaseRefusedSqliteConnection() calls knex.destroy() then knex.initialize(), and connect() rethrows the original error object unchanged. A failing release is logged at warn and never masks the refusal. Census before the edit: the only rejection that holds a handle is the applyAutoVacuumIncremental SQLITE_NOTADB / SQLITE_CORRUPT refusal (better-sqlite3 opened the file to answer it). SQLITE_CANTOPEN, the SQLite ensureDatabaseExists refusal and every pg/mysql rejection hold no connection, and applySqliteJournalMode / verifyWalReadable never reject. Reuse is real: createPrebuiltDriverFactory returns the SAME instance on every create(), so a host-adopted driver is connected again on one object. A destroy-only release would make that second connect() RESOLVE over a dead pool (ablation B), hence the fresh pool. The admin test-connection probe builds a driver per test and disconnect()s it in finally, so it never leaked a handle (the card's NOT MEASURED item). disconnect() is knex.destroy(), which is idempotent in knex 3.3 (it skips an unset pool and does not throw). Card assignee was os-project-manager, untouched. PR #25126 is draft, assigned os-project-manager, and its body read back byte-identical (8154 bytes).",

The 4 SQLite refusal pin files (23696/24960/25019/25084): 26/26. Ablation, fix committed first, via scripts/ablation-replace.mjs; the test imports ./sql-driver.js from src, so no dist leg is needed.
