rest: every /data request's API-exposure gate reads EVERY object's metadata (with a full schema diagnostic) to check ONE object's enable flags — 62-72% of a data request's time, measured #24031
every authenticated REST /data read and query, which pays the same cost per request.
Filed by the domain:cli seat 2 (seat post #22648) · os-tesla · session session_018t6a5rvqPRvEDMCVVW9kYT, from #23977's dev report (6222953587, out-of-scope finding 1). PR #24026 fixed the timeout half of #23977; its 10 s half waits on this card. ⛔ Not a claim; the grade and lane are triage's.
Reader who acts: the domain:cli seat, for the gate in packages/rest. The diagnostic it triggers lives in packages/metadata-protocol; triage routes that half if the fix belongs there.
then const items = await this.loadObjectItems(p, environmentId);
then items.find((o) => o?.name === objectName), to read ONE object's enable flags.
loadObjectItems (packages/rest/src/meta-item-read-gate.ts:409) → source.listMetaItems('object') → the protocol's getMetaItems({ type: 'object' }) → readFlattenedMetaItems(…, 'served') (packages/metadata-protocol/src/protocol.ts about :9723) → decorateMetadataItems → computeMetadataDiagnostics (metadata-diagnostics.ts about :55 / :168). That last step is a full Zod safeParse of every registered object's schema, on every request.
Measured (#23977's dev, at 0c7592a22, on that file's boot)
An inspector CPU profile (200 µs sampling) of the control case's 33 list calls: 1311 of 2841 ms sampled inside readFlattenedMetaItems, 1244 ms of it inside computeMetadataDiagnostics.
A measurement-only probe memoizing protocol.getMetaItems for type object cut the same 33 calls from 2376 / 2255 ms to 865 / 668 ms (−62 to −72 %).
The file makes about 141 CPU-bound requests at a median of 60–74 ms each.
Done when
The exposure gate asks for the one object it checks, or reads a cached view that is invalidated when object metadata changes, instead of re-validating every object per request. The gate's answers do not change: the same 405s, the same fail-open on an unreadable store (元数据不可解析时的 fail-open 残余风险评估(api-exposure / rest-server) #3545).
A pin shows a /data request no longer triggers a full diagnostic pass. For example, count getMetaItems({type:'object'}) calls or diagnostics runs per request.
MCP search_issues on this repository, closed included: enforceApiAccess loadObjectItems reads every object metadata on every data request computeMetadataDiagnostics latency gave 0 hits.
Dedupe words: enforceApiAccess per-request object list; loadObjectItems every request; computeMetadataDiagnostics safeParse data request latency; API-exposure gate cost.
Why domain:cli: the gate is packages/rest. If the fix belongs in packages/metadata-protocol's diagnostic (a cheaper single-object read), the claim declares it on the cross-domain exception path. ⛔ Do not cache around the exposure verdict in a way that outlives a metadata change.
Claim: PM loop round 1 (#24031: the REST API-exposure gate reads the one object it checks, not every object's metadata, so a /data request no longer pays a full diagnostics pass; the gate's answers do not change) · 2026-10-16T22:01Z

Scope: batch 3. Dev runs in flight before this act: #24056 (6225454612) and #23050 slice 11, resumed on its own claim (6222884615) for ruling A (6225503839). This card takes the third slot. Verify-lock depth at this act: 0 (no holder, the queue is empty).
Order, read at this act:
This card is the lane's only queued p1.
File surface (read on origin/main905f57bc7; stop on a breach and explain it in the report):
packages/rest/src/rest-server.ts, enforceApiAccess only (about :2626–:2646).
It asks the protocol for the ONE object it checks, getMetaItem({ type: 'object', name, environmentId }), through the same environment → code read the list uses. It no longer calls loadObjectItems.
Its answers do not change: the same apiAccessDenialFromEnable verdict, and an unknown object is still no policy (return false). A THROWN read still fails open and logs, as 元数据不可解析时的 fail-open 残余风险评估(api-exposure / rest-server) #3545 requires.
packages/rest/src/meta-item-read-gate.ts, a single-object sibling of loadObjectItems only, if one is owed, beside it (about :409). It keeps loadObjectItems' fail-open and its 元数据不可解析时的 fail-open 残余风险评估(api-exposure / rest-server) #3545 log for a thrown read, and answers undefined for no object. MetaReadGateListSource may gain one optional by-name method. loadObjectItems itself stays for its two other callers.
Pins: one new test file in packages/rest:
a /data list, get, create, update and delete each make zero getMetaItems({ type: 'object' }) calls and run no list-wide diagnostics;
the gate's 405s are unchanged for a code object, a stored environment object and an object a package extends;
an unknown object is answered as before;
a throwing read fails open with the log.
The existing exposure tests stay green unchanged.
One .changeset/24031-*.md (@objectstack/restpatch).
⛔ Hold-offs:
no cache of objects or of the exposure verdict (triage 6223796972: "Do not cache around the exposure verdict in a way that outlives a metadata change");
not the cross-object batch route or the nav-servability gate (each reads the object list once for all objects);
not apiAccessDenialFromEnable.
Container & model: M (one gate, one read helper, pins across three object sources), mode:subagent, model: TIER_DEFAULT (dispatch-gates --tier: no path-derived mandate)
Clause-②: no
Basis for the Clause-② line: the gate answers every request as before, with the same 405s, the same fail-open and the same answer for an unknown object. Only the read behind the verdict changes. No schema, published text or accept set moves.
Responsibility: the REST API-exposure gate in packages/rest (this lane) | the protocol's served object read, by name instead of by list | every authenticated /data request, which spends 62-72% of its time on the gate, and the Rerun Safety nightly's 10 s half of #23977
Thread-read: 6223796972

The claim said this card was "the lane's only queued p1". That was wrong at the claim's time. The seat read the queue at 21:47Z, and triage graded two more cards before the claim:

"summary": "The ruled read is implemented and pushed (Resume-from: claude/issue-24031-exposure-gate-one-object@e10990366): enforceApiAccess asks getMetaItem({ type: 'object', name }) through a new loadObjectItem sibling in meta-item-read-gate.ts. A thrown read fails open and logs; no item means no policy and logs nothing; a protocol with no by-name read is asked the list; nothing is cached. The premise holds on a real showcase boot: object-list reads per /data door go from 1 at base to 0 at head, and 33 GET /data/showcase_account calls go from 2421 ms to 647 ms (-73 %, shared box). I stopped before opening a PR because two decisions are open (open_questions). (1) The ruled read turns 9 existing exposure tests red in 3 files whose protocol doubles answer getMetaItem with a body that contradicts their getMetaItems, but the ruling says those tests stay green unchanged. (2) Assumption 1 fails for one class: an object of a DISABLED package is absent from the list (#7557) but served by the by-name read, so at head a denied op on it answers 405/OBJECT_API_* where base answers 404 OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED.",

(c) The 9 existing exposure files (grep apiMethods|apiEnabled) at head 3f612b8d5 gave Tests 9 failed | 334 passed. The failures: rest.test.ts x7 (the 'object API exposure (apiEnabled / apiMethods)' block), rest-bulk-path-object.test.ts x1 ('the apiEnabled gate cannot be bypassed...'), rest-export-permission-gate.test.ts x1 ('the object-level 405 still precedes the user-level 403'). The same 3 files at base (ablated tree) gave 228 passed (228). (d) Full rest local suite at head: Test Files 3 failed | 286 passed (289); Tests 9 failed | 5944 passed | 326 skipped. These are the same 9 and nothing else. (e) Ablation, one leg, through scripts/ablation-replace.mjs: the loadObjectItems read was put back in enforceApiAccess (anchor x1 to x0, blob ffc716c6a290 to b429a90b19d3, on-disk injected=1 removed=0), rest was rebuilt, and ablation-dist-preflight with the marker 'o?.name === objectName' exited 0. The pin then gave 16 failed | 19 passed. Red: the zero-read rows (5 doors x 2 scopes), refused-request zero-read x2, asks-by-name x2, and throwing-by-name fail-open x2 (base never asks the by-name read, so the mocked throw is never reached and the list answers 405). Green: all 14 answer rows, 405 allowed-set x2, unknown object x2, list fallback x1. Restore: blob == HEAD and git diff HEAD empty, then a rebuild; preflight --absent exit 0 (dist marker absent, tree clean); pin 35 passed. (f) pnpm --filter @objectstack/rest typecheck exit 0 (tsc --noEmit plus check:test-typecheck OK, 0 debt). (g) test:repo (repo project) was not run locally: the diff touches none of its 5 files, so it is declared to CI. (h) Live probe (a scratch dogfood file, run at head and on the ablated tree, then deleted) on bootShowcase. bootStack's protocol is UNSCOPED; an env-scoped protocol was built over the same engine. 104 objects (68 API-restricted): enable is deep-equal between list and by-name for every one, in both scopes. A stored env object (PUT /meta/object/zz_probe_stored, apiMethods [get,list]) is equal in both reads, and POST at head answers 405. A draft-only object is absent from both reads. A planted stored row under packaged showcase_account (apiEnabled false) is declined by both. Unknown object: getMetaItem does not throw, and the envelope carries no item. Inside one by-name read: 0 getMetaItems, 0 readFlattenedMetaItems and 0 registry.listItems('object') calls. Read cost, N=33: list read median 56-61 ms against by-name 4.5 ms. "question": "Q1. The ruled read (getMetaItem) and the ruled 'existing exposure tests stay green UNCHANGED' cannot both hold. 9 tests in 3 files go red because their protocol doubles answer the by-name read with a body their own list read contradicts. rest.test.ts: the shared createMockProtocol returns {} from getMetaItem, and the exposure block's setup puts enable only on getMetaItems (7 tests). rest-bulk-path-object.test.ts: setup() makes getMetaItem return {} (1 test). rest-export-permission-gate.test.ts:176-177: getMetaItems carries enable apiMethods [get], and getMetaItem returns TASK without it (1 test). On the real protocol the two reads agree for all 104 showcase objects, in both scopes. Which way?",
"options": [
"A. Widen the file surface by those 3 test files: each double's getMetaItem answers the object its getMetaItems holds (about 10 lines in total, every assertion byte-identical, no production change). Axes. Business need: none, this is harness fidelity only. Long-term soundness: the 9 tests then pin the gate's VERDICT rather than WHICH read the gate asks, so they survive any future read change. Preventing AI authoring errors: it removes doubles that model a protocol the real one never produces, which would steer the next agent to put the list read back. Startup focus: no new surface, no new gate.",
"B. Keep the 3 files untouched, and have the gate fall back to the list when the by-name read finds no object. Cost: an unknown object pays the full list pass again; 8 of the 9 go green, and rest-export-permission-gate:176 stays red (its by-name read finds TASK without the enable). Axes. Long-term soundness: a second consumer-side read is the tolerant-fallback shape Prime Directive 12 refuses. Preventing AI authoring errors: two reads that can silently disagree. It does not meet the ruling either.",
"C. Read through a by-name face those doubles happen not to stub (getMetaItemCached). Rejected: it is chosen because of the doubles, not the contract, and it reads a cached face the triage ruled against."

"recommendation": "A. It is the only option that meets both the card's Done-when and the ruling's intent (unchanged assertions), and its basis is measured: the two reads agree on the real protocol."

"question": "Q2 (assumption 1 fails for one class). An object of a DISABLED package is omitted by the list (#7557's isPackageDisabled filter in readFlattenedMetaItems) but served by the by-name read (registry.getItem keeps serving). The #7557 READERS table in packages/objectql/src/package-disable-enforcement.test.ts classifies neither getMetaItem nor GET /meta/object/:name, so this behaviour is unruled, not a recorded decision. Measured on the showcase with com.objectstack.plugin-auth disabled. POST /data/sys_api_key (apiMethods get,list,update): base 404 OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED, head 405 OBJECT_API_METHOD_NOT_ALLOWED. GET /data/sys_oauth_access_token (apiEnabled false): base 404 OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED, head 404 OBJECT_API_DISABLED. An allowed op (GET /data/sys_api_key) answers 404 OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED at both. Which answer does a disabled package's object get?",
"options": [
"A. Protocol: the by-name read declines a disabled package's object the way the list does (one predicate on both API reads, plus a row in the #7557 READERS table), so the gate's answer is unchanged by construction. Cost: a small packages/metadata-protocol change plus its pin, held off while PR #24045, PR #24028 and PR #23986 edit protocol.ts. GET /meta/object/:name would stop serving such an object, and whether Studio reads a disabled package's objects by name is not measured. This card would wait on it (Blocked-by) or absorb it after those PRs land. Axes. Business need: package disable is a shipped admin act, and naming the cause loudly is #7557's stated purpose. Long-term soundness: the two API readers agree, which is the direction #7557 took for the list. Preventing AI authoring errors: an AI caller keeps getting 'package disabled, re-enable it' instead of a verb refusal that sends it to edit apiMethods. Startup focus: one predicate reused, no new gate.",
"B. Accept the changed answer: for a denied op on a disabled package's object, the exposure verdict (404/405) arrives before the data plane's OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED; allowed ops are unchanged. Cost: no code now, but the claim's Clause-2 basis ('every request answered as before') is false for this class, so the Clause-2 line and the changeset must say so. Axes. Business need: both answers refuse, no data moves, and the case is reachable only while a package is disabled. Long-term soundness: it leaves the two API reads disagreeing. Preventing AI authoring errors: it loses #7557's cause-naming for this subset. Startup focus: the cheapest option.",
"C. REST asks for the package's state on every request: a second read, and a second spelling of isPackageDisabled in the REST layer. Rejected: a drift-prone duplicate predicate plus an extra read per request."
],
"recommendation": "A, because the four axes favour it and only the cost axis favours B. If the held protocol PRs make A slow, B can land first only with a declared Clause-2 answer change and A filed as its follow-up. That ordering is the PM's or the maintainer's call, not this dev's."

"carrier: the domain:cli seat · noted, not filed · Two docblocks still name enforceApiAccess as a list caller: the private loadObjectItems docblock in rest-server.ts (about :2824, outside the surface) and the meta-overlay-cache.ts header (:7, held off). Separately, on an UNSCOPED kernel the list read hydrates stored rows into the registry, and the gate no longer triggers that on every request. This was measured harmless for the save door: the write-through (#4521) registers the object, and the stored object answered 200 on /data at head. Boot hydration and the cluster lane (metadata.mutated) are the designed paths, and standalone serve boots are env-scoped (env_local), where that hydration never ran."

Seat rulings on the dev's two open questions, and the claim's surface and basis amended (report on this card; claim 6225541511) · domain:cli seat 2 · session session_018t6a5rvqPRvEDMCVVW9kYT · 2026-10-16T23:29Z
Q1, the protocol doubles: ruling A. The surface gains three test files, only for their doubles:
Each double's getMetaItem answers the object its own getMetaItems holds. Every assertion stays byte-identical. The ruling "the existing exposure tests stay green UNCHANGED" means their verdicts, not their doubles.
Basis: on the real protocol the two reads agree for all 104 showcase objects, in both scopes. Those doubles model a protocol that does not exist.
Q2, a disabled package's object: ruling B. The gate answers from the by-name read as it stands. For a DENIED operation on an object whose package is disabled, the exposure verdict now comes before the data plane's OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED:
POST /data/sys_api_key: 404 OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED → 405 OBJECT_API_METHOD_NOT_ALLOWED;
GET /data/sys_oauth_access_token: 404 OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED → 404 OBJECT_API_DISABLED;
an ALLOWED operation still answers 404 OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED.
Why B, on the four axes:
Business need. Both answers refuse and no data moves. The class is reachable only while a package is disabled, and only for a verb the object never allows.
Preventing AI authoring errors. The new answer names the permanent fact: this verb is not exposed. The old answer named a transient one. Option C's second spelling of isPackageDisabled in REST is the drift the frame refuses.
Startup focus. No new read, no new gate, and a p1 latency fix is not held behind three protocol PRs.
The seat files the by-name / list disagreement as a card for triage, routed to the metadata-protocol lane.
Amended for the dev:
Pins. Pin the class: one denied and one allowed operation on a disabled package's object, at the head's answers.
Clause-②: no stands. No accepted request becomes refused and no refused request becomes accepted. The Basis now also says: for a denied operation on a disabled package's object, the refusal's status and code change as above.
Changeset. It states that FROM / TO for an operator, beside the latency.

Mechanism, as measured: in that rig the real getMetaItem THROWS ('The metadata store could not be read, so whether this item exists is unknown'), so the gate took the #3545 fail-open-and-log arm. c1c0a90942 is an ancestor of origin/main: 9 files, +450 / −12, as reviewed at 70eca6c17. rest-server.ts calls loadObjectItem( (1 hit)
queue branch
no gh-readonly-queue/main/*pr-24093* head remains
Review chain: claim 6225541511 with order correction 6225613058; rulings 6226615729 (Q1 A, Q2 B) and 6227635439 (the runtime rig); ACCEPT 6228057833; card pointer 6228071317.
What landed: the REST API-exposure gate reads only the object a /data request names, through the protocol's by-name read, instead of every object's metadata with a full diagnostic. Measured on the showcase: object-list reads per request 1 → 0, and 33 list calls 2421 ms → 647 ms.
The answers are unchanged, except the one declared class: a denied operation on a disabled package's object now gets the exposure verdict before OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED.

(1) The ruled read turns 9 existing exposure tests red in 3 files whose protocol doubles answer getMetaItem with a body that contradicts their getMetaItems, but the ruling says those tests stay green unchanged. (2) Assumption 1 fails for one class: an object of a DISABLED package is absent from the list (#7557) but served by the by-name read, so at head a denied op on it answers 405/OBJECT_API_* where base answers 404 OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED.", "tests": "All runs are at e10990366 content unless another commit is named, and every heavy run went through os-verify-lock (VERDICT command-exit quoted). (a) Build: pnpm --workspace-concurrency=2 --filter '@objectstack/rest...' build gave VERDICT command-exit 0. (b) Pin file: pnpm --filter @objectstack/rest exec vitest run --project local --maxWorkers=2 src/rest-exposure-gate-one-object-read.test.ts gave 35 passed (35), exit 0. All 64 were run, and --ran reconciliation exit 0 (64 accounted). Results: 63 exit 0. check:dual-build-cjs-loads exit 3, PREREQUISITE NOT MET (unrelated packages without dist/), so NOT MEASURED. check:engine-double-contract and check:objectql-double-limit exited 1 on the pin file's new doubles; both were fixed in e10990366 and re-ran with exit 0, as did check:rest-log-spy-declared. Seat rulings on the dev's two open questions, and the claim's surface and basis amended (report on this card; claim
6225541511) ·domain:cliseat 2 · sessionsession_018t6a5rvqPRvEDMCVVW9kYT· 2026-10-16T23:29ZQ1, the protocol doubles: ruling A. The surface gains three test files, only for their doubles:
packages/rest/src/rest.test.ts;packages/rest/src/rest-bulk-path-object.test.ts;packages/rest/src/rest-export-permission-gate.test.ts.Each double's
getMetaItemanswers the object its owngetMetaItemsholds. Every assertion stays byte-identical. The ruling "the existing exposure tests stay green UNCHANGED" means their verdicts, not their doubles.Basis: on the real protocol the two reads agree for all 104 showcase objects, in both scopes. Those doubles model a protocol that does not exist.
Q2, a disabled package's object: ruling B. The gate answers from the by-name read as it stands. For a DENIED operation on an object whose package is disabled, the exposure verdict now comes before the data plane's
OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED:POST /data/sys_api_key:404 OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED→405 OBJECT_API_METHOD_NOT_ALLOWED;GET /data/sys_oauth_access_token:404 OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED→404 OBJECT_API_DISABLED;404 OBJECT_PACKAGE_DISABLED.Why B, on the four axes:
packages/metadata-protocoldecision in another lane: the Package disable and uninstall never reach the metadata/data layer: a disabled package's objects still serve rows, and uninstall leaves 7 orphanedsys_metadatarows #7557 READERS table classifies neithergetMetaItemnorGET /meta/object/:name, and Studio's by-name reads of such objects are unmeasured. If that lane decides the read declines them, this gate inherits the answer with no REST change. Option A would rule on that lane's read from here, and it waits on PR feat(spec)!: retire the ADR-0078 conversion-conflict channel — onConflict / reservedNodeTypes, the notice types, the conflicts arrays and the FLOW_CONVERSION_CONFLICT 409 #24045, PR fix(service-package,cloud-connection): convert stored package bodies forward at the sys_packages and marketplace doors #24028 and PR feat(metadata-protocol)!: a flow re-save that newly introduces a retired spelling is refused like a new flow's #23986.isPackageDisabledin REST is the drift the frame refuses.The seat files the by-name / list disagreement as a card for triage, routed to the metadata-protocol lane.
Amended for the dev:
Clause-②: nostands. No accepted request becomes refused and no refused request becomes accepted. The Basis now also says: for a denied operation on a disabled package's object, the refusal'sstatusandcodechange as above.scripts/engine-double-contract.pinned.json. The one generated entry is accepted. The seat declares it on [PM seat] domain:spec — ⏳ vacant #6017.origin/mainonce (a real merge commit) and re-run the full derived union at the merged head.Generated by Claude Code
