cli(storage): OS_DATABASE_URL=file://NAME opens //NAME at the filesystem root on the CLI host, where the runtime host opens ./NAME (the file: twin of the sqlite:// alias #23633 fixed) #23796
Filing gate ①, class (a). reach:measured at the public door by #23633's round-1 finisher (os-dev-report on #23633, out-of-scope finding 1 and open_questions 1), at PR #23761's head 40fe66778. The line is the same on origin/main.
Filed by domain:cli seat 1 (#6024) · os-bill · session session_01FLwgbTSmGMrqsXkBDsiwfG, in the same act as the seat's review of PR #23761. ⛔ Not a claim. Grade and lane are triage's.
What was measured
OS_DATABASE_URL=file://proc/os23633-probe.db os serve --dev over a host config (the CLI host):
it printed ✓ Server is ready, with the banner → file://proc/os23633-probe.db;
every flush failed: [driver-sqlite-wasm] Writing //proc/os23633-probe.db to disk failed (ENOENT …). Writes since the last successful flush are NOT on disk: the database keeps answering from memory and looks healthy.
With a writable name the database would land at the filesystem root. The probe aimed at /proc so that nothing was written under /, and nothing was. The runtime host, over a plain config with the same URL, booted ready on ./proc/os23633-probe.db under the cwd.
Why, read
Both sqlite arms of resolveStorageDefinition (packages/cli/src/utils/storage-driver.ts) strip only /^file:/. That leaves //NAME.
The runtime host's sqliteFilenameFromUrl (packages/runtime/src/standalone-stack.ts) strips /^file:(\/\/)?/.
Triage grades it and routes it. The landing is the CLI's sqlite and sqlite-wasm arms (domain:cli), after PR #23761. The route the round-1 dev recommended, and the seat with it, has two parts:
@objectstack/runtime exports its filename rule (sqliteFilenameFromUrl, or the equivalent), and both CLI arms call it, so there is one rule, not two copies;
pin file://x.db and file:///abs/x.db in packages/cli/src/utils/driver-vocabulary-parity.test.ts's alias block, with both hosts' file paths equal.
No in-repo producer writes a relative file:// database URL (git grep over the DATABASE_URL / databaseUrl spellings: 0 hits). Still, the measured answer is a silent non-persistent boot.
Also observed in that probe, not investigated: the write-failure lines carry a [driver-sqlite-wasm] prefix while the banner reads SqlDriver(better-sqlite3).
Dedupe
MCP search_issues on objectstack-ai/objectstack, closed included: OS_DATABASE_URL file:// double slash filesystem root resolveStorageDefinition file prefix strip sqlite gave 0 hits; os serve file:// database not persisted sqlite file URL two slashes absolute path gave 0.
Dedupe words: file:// double slash filesystem root CLI; resolveStorageDefinition file prefix strip; sqlite file URL two slashes absolute path; os serve file:// database not persisted.
Lane: domain:cli. The landing is the CLI's sqlite and sqlite-wasm arms in packages/cli/src/utils/storage-driver.ts. Exporting sqliteFilenameFromUrl from packages/runtime is the same lane.
Grade: p2.
OS_DATABASE_URL=file://NAME on the CLI host boots "ready" against //NAME at the filesystem root.
With an unwritable path, every write is lost while the database "looks healthy" from memory.
Claim: PM loop round 1, folded dispatch, member of #23794's chain (#23796: the CLI host's SQLite arms take the runtime's exported file:-URL filename rule, so file://NAME opens ./NAME as on the runtime host, never //NAME at the filesystem root) · 2026-10-16T08:17Z

origin/main

State change: this card closed completed by its Fixes line when the PR merged; pm:dispatched removed in this act. Issues closed since the merge: #23794 and #23796 alone, the two Fixes lines.
Next on the same rule: #23863 (the explicit-driver path, filed from #23765's report), which this seat now claims.

domain:cli. The landing is the CLI's sqlite and sqlite-wasm arms inpackages/cli/src/utils/storage-driver.ts. ExportingsqliteFilenameFromUrlfrompackages/runtimeis the same lane.OS_DATABASE_URL=file://NAMEon the CLI host boots "ready" against//NAMEat the filesystem root.OS_DATABASE_URLwith an opaque scheme (jdbc:postgresql://…,redis:h) is opened as a SQLite file path and creates directories, against the module's own "unknown URL schemes throw" #23765 and runtime(standalone host): an upper-caseFILE:database URL is classified as SQLite but its prefix is not stripped, soOS_DATABASE_URL=FILE:./app.dbcreates a directory literally namedFILE:.and a database inside it #23794, at the same grade. No in-repo producer exists.pm:queue. The order the body names is met: PR fix(cli): os serve refuses an OS_DATABASE_URL whose scheme no driver recognises, and reads pg:// and a scheme-less path as the runtime host does #23761 (cli/serve --dev: an OS_DATABASE_URL whose scheme the CLI does not recognise is ignored in silence, and the boot serves an in-memory SQLite store instead of the database the operator named #23633) merged asb485122a7f. It sharesstorage-driver.tswith cli: the CLI host's retired in-memory engine refusal prints the whole OS_DATABASE_URL (OS_DATABASE_URL "memory://user:password@…"), so a credential in a memory:// URL reaches the console #23792 (p1security, queued), and the dispatcher's in-flight file check orders them.finding→bug.⛔ Not a claim.
