Summary

Lane E of the simplification program: the Rust core runtime, settings and CLI in rust/src (providers, locale, usage_snapshot, wayfinder and the lane F cost/JSONL files excluded). The change is behavior-preserving. Persisted settings formats, serde names, aliases and defaults, CLI flags and output text, bridge DTOs, and settings tab ids are unchanged. Before risky levers, new pin tests were added first: hooks help text, the dashboard icon table, hook timestamps, forecast series, the token account table, and settings parse-error strings.

Deleted (one module per commit)

  • RCO-01 orphan modules: shortcuts.rs, status/indicators.rs, core/credentials.rs, core/widget_snapshot.rs (RCO-09) and core/session_quota.rs (RCO-10). I checked the port ledger first. None of them has a caller outside its own file and re-export.
  • settings/status.rs, the legacy settings setters and accent-color helpers, and the test-only per-provider setters.
  • RCO-02/03 hard-dead and test-only items:
    • in core: redactor redact_email, provider_state::is_problem, http_proxy validation_error, and the codex_accounts model helpers
    • in updater: the pending-installer scan and the never-read prerelease field
    • in wsl: windows_path_to_wsl
    • in tray: the BadgeType remnants
    • both RollingBuffer copies (tty_runner and host)
  • RCO-07: the never-read requires_api_key / config_file_path fields on ProviderConfigInfo.
  • RCO-08: the test-only Codex host-cost renderer copy in cli/cost.rs. The live renderer is codex_costs/host_costs.rs.
  • RCO-13: the unused forecast copy of persist_recorded_windows, and the never-constructed AccountKeyMismatch burndown error.

Unified

  • RCO-11: TokenAccountSupport::for_provider builds its rows from cookie and API-key constructors.
  • RCO-12: hook timestamps format with chrono. The output is byte-identical: Z suffix, no fraction, pre-epoch clamp kept.
  • RCO-13: the forecast session and weekly series are driven from one table.
  • RCO-26: the dashboard icon table is generated by a macro and pinned against the icons dir.
  • RCO-27: CLI pass-throughs are dropped and test-only helpers are gated.
  • RCO-28: tty_runner shares the DSR and elapsed helpers.
  • RCO-30: CLI FetchContext literals use ..FetchContext::default().
  • RCO-31: one print_json helper serves all CLI commands.
  • RCO-32: repeated patterns in cost, account, usage, serve and guard are deduped. Hooks share one set of JSON output args and one test-result push.
  • TST-03 (settings tests):
    • The language, theme and clamp tests are table-driven. Every former input and expected value is a row.
    • test_settings_load_missing_language_field_defaults_to_english now actually omits ui_language.
  • The module-level #![allow(dead_code)] lines are removed from browser, cli, openai_dashboard, host/command_runner, login, notifications, settings, sound and status, and so is the item allow in tray/icon and updater. Fixed what that surfaced:
    • ensure_aumid_registered is cfg'd out of tests.
    • MINIMUM_WAV_SIZE moved into the sound tests.

Split (every file named in the brief is now under 800 lines)

  • settings.rs 1387 -> 750 lines. It is split into settings/persistence.rs (load, save and migrations), settings/start_at_login.rs and settings/provider_accessors.rs.
  • settings/tests.rs -> 701 lines. Split out: settings/tests/language_theme.rs, settings/tests/provider_configs.rs and settings/start_at_login/tests.rs.
  • cli/serve/tests.rs -> 234 lines. Split out: tests/head_bound.rs and tests/dashboard_routes.rs.
  • core/session_equivalent_forecast.rs -> 516 lines. The history store moved to session_equivalent_forecast/history.rs.
  • cli/tty_runner.rs -> 680 lines; the options moved to tty_runner/options.rs.
  • managed_process.rs -> 768 lines; the command-line encoding moved to managed_process/command_line.rs.
  • Inline mod tests blocks of 10 large files moved to sibling <stem>/tests.rs. Test paths are unchanged.

Splits are line-range extractions, not git mv. To review them as moves, use git show --color-moved=dimmed-zebra and git blame -C -C.

Skipped

  • RCO-05 (RawSettings legacy-only shim), skipped by its own gate.
    • A flattened legacy struct moves the serde error position for a bad legacy field. For example, "codex_cookie_source": 5 reports "line 2 column 26" today and would report "line 3 column 1" with the shim. settings_parse_errors_are_pinned now pins those strings.
    • Hiding the legacy fields would also force them to be pub, because 107 ..Settings::default() literals sit outside the module, including the desktop crate.
  • RCO-12 spawn reuse, not done. emit_quota_threshold_hooks runs one thread for several events and ignores spawn errors with .ok(). spawn_hook_dispatch spawns one thread per event and uses .expect, so reusing it would change behavior.
  • Not in lane E: RCO-04/04b (lane D, or a tooling decision), RCO-06 (call sites in providers and shell), RCO-29 (a feature decision), and RCO-14..25 (lane F).

codexbar 3752 (at 3226d2f) 3722 before rebase; 3733 after rebase (diff of the two: only the 11 new providers::kilo::* tests from main)
codexbar-desktop-tauri 639 639 (identical names)
  • In codexbar, 95 names are gone and 65 are added. Every gone name is justified case by case in the lane ledger (inv-E-removed.md): a test of deleted dead code, a table-row merge, or a path rename from a split.
  • The added names are the moved paths plus 8 new pins.

Commands run (after rebase on origin/main 522699d)

  • cargo fmt --all: clean.
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings covers both crates (the root workspace holds both manifests): clean.
  • cargo test -p codexbar: 3731 passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored, plus 1 and 0 in the other targets. The count includes 11 kilo tests that came in with main; before the rebase it was 3720.
  • cargo test -p codexbar-desktop-tauri: 639 passed, 0 failed.
  • grep -rn "rust/src" apps/desktop-tauri/src: the frontend tests read only core/provider.rs and locale/*, and both are untouched.
  • scripts/local-check.ps1 -Slice ci was not run: the workstation's no-permanent-delete hook blocks its cleanup step. Its Rust slice was run piece by piece as listed above.
  • Builds used a C: target dir for this process only, because W: is full.

Behavior-risk notes

  • No UI-visible change: the tray and settings edits are dead-code removal and file splits only, so CUA proof does not apply.
  • Hook timestamps for years above 9999 would now get chrono's sign prefix. This is unreachable: every caller passes the wall clock.
  • updater no longer deserializes prerelease. serde ignores the unknown key.
  • The one edit outside lane E is in rust/src/codex_costs.rs (lane F): it drops the now-unused CodexHostCostWindow re-export.

Cross-lane follow-ups

  • Lane F could port the unknown-dash assertions of the deleted cli::cost host-text test to host_costs.
  • Lane F: there are dead items in the jsonl and cost_scanner files.
  • Lane C: launch_block_reason is used only by src-tauri tests.
  • usage_snapshot most_restrictive / any_exhausted belong to the Serialize Wayfinder snapshot as camelCase for the bridge #791 owner.
  • locale tray_tooltip belongs to lane D.
  • Lane E files still over 800 lines that the brief did not name:
    • cli/serve/mod.rs 810
    • core/quota_burndown.rs 816
    • coordinator/tests.rs 877
    • core/models_dev_pricing.rs 897
    • core/hooks.rs 903

Validation fix round

An adversarial validator reviewed 1541dc9 and returned SHIP. This round fixes its low-severity findings in five commits, with no change in behavior:

F1, porting the host-cost assertions, is not part of this round.

Checks at b28869b:

  • cargo fmt --all --check: clean.
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
  • cargo test -p codexbar: 3731 passed and 1 ignored, plus 1 bin test.
  • cargo test -p codexbar-desktop-tauri: 639 passed.

Merged main (603681a, #793)

Merged origin/main with a normal merge commit (no rebase). Main had already advanced to b84e797 (#791, Wayfinder camelCase snapshot) when fetched, so that is included too. Conflicts: settings.rs took the branch side (the accessor block lives in settings/provider_accessors.rs), and main's Groq "auto" cookie-source default plus doc comment went into provider_accessors.rs::cookie_source. settings/api_keys.rs took main's new Groq help text, minus the config_file_path field the branch removed. Main's two Groq tests auto-merged into settings/tests.rs next to their neighbours. Checks: fmt, workspace clippy -D warnings, cargo test -p codexbar 3770 passed / 1 ignored, cargo test -p codexbar-desktop-tauri 641 passed.

Walkthrough

This pull request adds scoped session-equivalent forecast history and settings modules. It consolidates CLI and process helpers, expands tests across several subsystems, and removes or restricts multiple public APIs and modules.

Changes

Session-equivalent forecast history

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scoped history and forecasting
rust/src/core/session_equivalent_forecast.rs, rust/src/core/session_equivalent_forecast/history.rs
History records and loads session and weekly utilization by provider and account. Forecasting retains a valid prior estimate when a refresh has no valid estimate.
Forecast and history tests
rust/src/core/session_equivalent_forecast/tests.rs
Tests cover history filtering, retention, account isolation, estimate retention, and forecast calculations.

Settings persistence and accessors

Layer / File(s) Summary
Settings structure and persistence
rust/src/settings.rs, rust/src/settings/persistence.rs, rust/src/settings/cost_time_zone.rs, rust/src/cost_reporting_period.rs
Settings persistence and migrations are defined in a separate module. The saved cost time zone is documented as not applied at runtime.
Provider configuration accessors
rust/src/settings/provider_accessors.rs, rust/src/settings/api_keys.rs
Generic accessors and compatibility aliases are added. Provider configuration metadata no longer includes API-key requirement or config-file path fields.
Start-at-login support
rust/src/settings/start_at_login.rs, rust/src/settings/start_at_login/tests.rs
Platform-specific start-at-login methods and tests cover executable selection and registry-command repair decisions.
Settings tests
rust/src/settings/tests.rs, rust/src/settings/tests/*
Tests cover settings parsing, serialization, provider-config compatibility, language, theme, and persistence.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~90 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 904b1

The settings refactor reorganizes accessors and persistence and is intended to keep behavior unchanged. A few earlier test-coverage concerns remain open in the forecast and indexer tests. These are limited to tests and do not block the change, but they are worth a follow-up.

Inline comments:
Review comments at @rust/src/cli/serve/tests/dashboard_routes.rs:
- Around line 398-410: Move the shared request/response roundtrip logic from
request_roundtrip_dashboard into a pub(super) helper in head_bound.rs that
accepts a ServeConfig. Update request_roundtrip in head_bound.rs and the
dashboard route tests to call that helper, removing the duplicated
implementation while preserving the existing timeout and response-drain
behavior.

Review comments at @rust/src/cli/tty_runner/tests.rs:
- Around line 242-248: Remove the redundant assertion in `test_enriched_path`,
since its non-empty fallback makes it pass regardless of the path contents. Keep
the existing non-empty assertion; only replace the redundant check if adding a
meaningful path-content assertion.

Review comments at @rust/src/codex_workspaces/indexer/tests.rs:
- Line 284: Extend the test around `snap.redact_for_privacy()` to assert that
`snap.sessions[0]` has its title and `cwd` redacted, in addition to the existing
assertions for `snap.projects[0].top_sessions[0]`.
- Line 49: Update the dated fixtures in all three tests to use the date derived
from the cost bucket scan zone, and pass the same fixed `now` to each
`load_snapshot_at` call so the fixture date is within the scan range.

Review comments at @rust/src/core/hook_transition/tests.rs:
- Line 325: Update the suppression test containing HookProviderStatus::Unknown
so usage rises from below 80% to 100% while resets_at advances; assert that only
QuotaReset fires, ensuring the test exercises suppression of upward QuotaLow and
QuotaReached events.
- Line 276: Update the second observation in this test to keep usage at 100%,
matching the first observation, so the test verifies reset-boundary advancement
without a usage drop triggering QuotaReset. Preserve the existing lane key,
timestamp, and other arguments.

Review comments at @rust/src/core/session_equivalent_forecast/tests.rs:
- Around line 271-275: Update the nearby-reset and out-of-order cases around
SessionEquivalentBurnEstimator::estimate to start from a history with at least
three completed groups that produces an estimate; then alter only the reset
times for each case and assert the expected estimate or rejection, so each
assertion tests grouping or ordering rather than the minimum sample count.
- Line 429: In the test loop, insert more than the ring capacity of 56 samples,
then assert that only 56 are retained and that the first retained sample is the
expected post-eviction sample.

Use the shared roundtrip helper instead of a second copy.

request_roundtrip_dashboard repeats the body of request_roundtrip in rust/src/cli/serve/tests/head_bound.rs (Lines 47-61). The only difference is that this helper takes a prebuilt ServeConfig. Add one pub(super) helper in head_bound.rs that accepts a ServeConfig. Then have both callers use it. With one helper, the timeout and drain behavior stays the same for both test files.

Move the shared request/response roundtrip logic from
request_roundtrip_dashboard into a pub(super) helper in head_bound.rs that
accepts a ServeConfig. Update request_roundtrip in head_bound.rs and the
dashboard route tests to call that helper, removing the duplicated
implementation while preserving the existing timeout and response-drain
behavior.

Remove the redundant assertion in test_enriched_path.

Line 245 already asserts !path.is_empty(). Line 247 checks path.contains(';') || !path.is_empty(), so it always passes and verifies nothing. Delete it, or replace it with a real check, for example that the current PATH entries are still present.

Remove the redundant assertion in `test_enriched_path`, since its non-empty
fallback makes it pass regardless of the path contents. Keep the existing

path-content assertion.

Use the index scan date for dated fixtures.

load_snapshot_at ends its scan range at cost_bucket_zone().date(now). The fixtures use Local::now().date_naive(). A pinned cost zone can be behind the machine-local date, so the dated fixture directory can fall outside the scan range.

Derive each fixture date from the scan zone and pass one fixed now to load_snapshot_at in all three tests at lines 49, 101, and 159.

Assert redaction of top-level sessions.

This test checks snap.projects[0].top_sessions[0], but it does not check snap.sessions[0]. Add assertions for the top-level session title and cwd so the test catches a privacy regression in that separate collection.

Isolate the reset-boundary condition.

This test drops usage from 100% to 0%. That drop triggers QuotaReset even if reset-boundary detection fails. Keep usage unchanged in the second observation so the test checks the boundary advance alone.

Make the suppression test cross a quota threshold.

A change from 95% to 5% cannot trigger an upward QuotaLow or QuotaReached edge. This test therefore passes even if reset handling stops suppressing those events. Advance resets_at while usage rises from below 80% to 100%, then assert that only QuotaReset fires.

Make the grouping assertions distinguish valid and invalid histories.

The nearby-reset case expects None because it has only one completed group. The later out-of-order case also has fewer than the required three groups. Both assertions can pass without testing the intended grouping or ordering behavior. Start with a history that produces an estimate, then vary its reset times and assert the resulting estimate or rejection.

Insert enough samples to test ring eviction.

With sample_limit set to 7, the ring capacity is 56. This test inserts only 30 samples, so it passes even if eviction stops working. Insert more than 56 samples and assert both the retained count and the first retained sample.
