Summary

The tray panel now has the CodexBar 0.70.0 Mac menu chrome. It is a light, fixed 310 px panel that opens next to the tray under every app theme. This is PR 1 of the tray-card rework in W:/mac-parity/spec/tray-card-spec.md (section 6.2, item 1). PR 2 (feat/mac-usage-pace-bar) adds the per-window pace bar. PR 3 restyles the card body.

What changes for users:

  • The panel is light (#DEDEE2) with a gray hairline and a 6 px radius. On Windows 11, DWM rounds the window corners and draws its border in #8A8B8E. Settings and the float bar keep their dark look.
  • The footer follows the Mac groups. Every footer row except Refresh has a 16 px line icon. Refresh, Settings... and Quit show Ctrl+R, Ctrl+, and Ctrl+Q in a right-hand column. About reads "About CodexBar (v0.70.0)".
  • Usage Dashboard and Status Page appear for any provider whose backend reports those URLs in get_provider_detail. Before, a hard-coded list in TrayPanel.tsx decided.
  • The cost block now shows in the tray. The Codex and Cursor captures show it.
  • A hovered menu row uses the Windows accent color. The panel reads the accent again each time it takes focus, so an accent change applies on the next open.
  • The panel can't be moved or resized. Its height fits the content, up to the work area.
  • Settings > Menu has a new Panel scale slider from 100% to 200%. It replaces the zoom slider in the panel footer.

What was removed and where it went

Removed Where it went
Zoom slider in the panel footer Settings > Menu > Panel scale. The slider saves the same trayScalePercent setting when you release it, so a saved zoom carries over.
Move strip (drag to move, double-click to reset) and shell/flyout_placement.rs Nothing. The panel opens next to the tray every time, like the Mac menu. An old flyout position entry stays in the geometry file, and nothing reads it.
Eight resize grips, the stored flyout size, and the size_entries geometry map Nothing. The width is 310 px times Panel scale. The next geometry save drops an old size_entries map.
Commands set_flyout_size, reset_flyout_position and flyout_stored_size Deleted with their wrappers in lib/tauri.ts.
HAS_DASHBOARD and HAS_STATUS_PAGE in TrayPanel.tsx get_provider_detail (dashboardUrl, statusPageUrl) for the selected provider, or the only one.
The tray rule that hid .menu-card__cost Deleted, so the cost block shows.
Locale keys PanelZoom and TrayMoveHandleHint PanelScaleLabel and PanelScaleHelper. The new keys MenuAboutVersion, TrayMenuSwitchAccount, TrayMenuUsageDashboard and TrayMenuStatusPage are translated in all 10 locales.

Decisions this PR implements

  • 7.1, Option C. CSS paints the solid #DEDEE2 fill. The flyout builder passes the same color as background_color, which tao paints on WM_ERASEBKGND. That is meant to stop a dark flash before first paint (inferred from tao's erase handler). The CUA check below has to confirm it. For the tray flyout only, dwm.rs sets DWMWA_WINDOW_CORNER_PREFERENCE to round and DWMWA_BORDER_COLOR to #8A8B8E. There is no Acrylic. The builder keeps .theme(Some(Theme::Dark)), and the light look comes from tokens in the tray scope, not from prefers-color-scheme.
  • 7.3. No submenus. Plan Usage, Cost and the Status Page chevron are not added.
  • 7.4. The zoom slider, the resize grips and the move strip are gone with their sizing code. Panel scale keeps trayScalePercent working. The frontend and the backend both clamp it to 100 to 200.
  • 7.8. The new get_system_accent_color command reads AccentColorMenu from the registry, or the DWM AccentColor when that is missing. The panel uses it for the menu selection. Selection text is white when white has 4.5:1 contrast on the accent, and black otherwise. Black then has at least 4.67:1.

The --mac-* tokens in styles.css are the shared layer for this rework. PR 2 reads --mac-pace-ok and --mac-pace-bad with fallbacks, and PR 3 uses the card tokens.

Merging with the other work:

  • git merge-tree finds no conflicts between this branch and origin/main at 522699d, or between this branch and feat/mac-usage-pace-bar at c838ede.
  • With PR 2 merged in, tsc --noEmit passes and Vitest passes 107 files and 824 tests.
  • The Rust side of that merge was not built, because the W: drive is nearly full. PR 2's new pace field is optional in TypeScript, and this branch adds no Rust RateWindowSnapshot literal that the new field would break.

Tests added

  • Rust. accent_registry_dword_reads_as_abgr pins how the registry accent DWORD decodes. The Chrome tests pin that only the light panel gets round corners and the gray border, and that only the resizable dark chrome keeps WS_THICKFRAME. panel_fill_matches_the_css_panel_background ties PANEL_FILL to --mac-panel-bg. old_flyout_size_entries_are_dropped_on_the_next_save covers the geometry file. surface.rs pins the fixed 310 px window.
  • Vitest. MenuSurface.test.tsx covers the footer groups, icons, separators and shortcuts. TrayPanel.test.tsx covers the link rows from get_provider_detail, Switch Account, the Panel scale zoom, the accent, and the accent refresh on focus. It also checks that a failed native resize logs a warning and still shows the panel. DisplayTab.test.tsx covers the Panel scale slider. menuSelection.test.ts, trayScale.test.ts and useTrayPanelLayout.sizing.test.tsx cover the text contrast, the clamp and the 310 px times scale width.
  • The tests for the move strip, the resize grips, the stored size and the footer zoom slider are deleted with that code.
  • A mutation pass broke eight of the behaviors these tests pin, one at a time, and each break failed its test. A ninth break, to the in-flight guard on the panel's resize observer, failed a test that was already on main.

Commands run

The frontend rows ran on the final commit. One earlier pnpm test run, made while cargo was building, failed useTrayPanelLayout sizing > does not feed measurement style changes back into another auto-fit pass. The test is unchanged from main, where three earlier commits worked on the stability of its file. It passed alone three times and in the two full runs after that.

scripts/local-check.ps1 did not run as a whole. Its Rust and frontend steps ran one by one, as listed above. The W: drive had about 1.6 GB free.

Before and after images

Each sheet shows the Mac light menu, the Mac dark menu, Windows before (main at 60d4ae3) and Windows after.

  • Packs: W:/mac-parity/report/mac-panel-chrome/{Claude,Codex,OpenRouter,Copilot,Cursor,Vercel}.png
  • Overview with several providers: W:/mac-parity/report/mac-panel-chrome/WinMulti.png
  • Settings > Menu before and after: W:/mac-parity/report/mac-panel-chrome/SettingsMenu.png
  • Panel scale 150%: W:/mac-parity/report/mac-panel-chrome/Claude-PanelScale150.png and Codex-PanelScale150.png
  • Raw captures: W:/mac-parity/win-runs/<Pack>@mac-panel-chrome/panel.png (after) and W:/mac-parity/win-runs/<Pack>/panel.png (before)

The captures come from commit 49d799b. The last three commits came after them:

  • The selected card loses its 6% white plate. On the fill that plate was about 2 levels lighter per channel (computed), so the captures differ from the final build by about that much there.
  • Dark selection text becomes solid black, and the panel reads the accent again on focus. Both need a hovered row or an accent change, and the packs show neither.
  • --mac-panel-bg moves to :root with the same color. The dark erase brush call runs for every window again, as on main, and the follow-ups below show that it changes nothing. The flyout builder loses a minimum-size branch that never ran, because the tray panel sets no minimum size.
  • A failed native resize now logs a warning.
  • Comments are trimmed, and the hairline color and the 1 px height slack get names with the same values.

win_run.py unclips the scroll container, so in a capture of a panel taller than the 920 px window cap the hairline frame ends at 920 px and the content runs on below it. The app scrolls that content inside the frame.

Manual tray check for the coordinator

win_run.py shows the CSS but not the DWM chrome. Check these on the real tray with CUA:

  1. On Windows 11, the panel has rounded corners and a thin #8A8B8E border. There is no dark ring and no doubled border.
  2. Opening the panel shows no dark flash.
  3. At 100% display scale, the panel is 310 logical px wide. At 150% display scale it is still 310 logical px (465 physical px). The height fits the content, with no clipped footer and no large gap below it.
  4. The panel stays light under Windows theme dark, light and auto. With the app theme on auto, Settings and the float bar stay dark while the panel is open.
  5. There is no move strip, and no edge shows a resize cursor.
  6. Hovering a footer row paints it in the Windows accent. After you change the accent in Windows settings, the next open uses the new accent.
  7. Panel scale at 150% in Settings > Menu makes the panel 465 logical px wide, and the text scales with it.
  8. Ctrl+R refreshes, Ctrl+, opens Settings and Ctrl+Q quits.
  9. About shows the app version.
  10. Usage Dashboard and Status Page open the selected provider's URLs.
  11. Clicking outside the panel hides it. Dragging a provider tab to reorder it does not.
  12. In a panel taller than the screen, the content scrolls and the footer stays visible.
  13. On Windows 10, the panel keeps square corners and still draws correctly.

Gaps against the Mac shots

These are outside this PR:

  • PR 3 owns the provider switcher style, the OverviewSpendSummary restyle, the card header and metric rows, the "Usage details" and "On-pace budget" disclosures, the "Claude (OAuth)" suffix and the Extra usage strings.
  • PR 2 owns the pace bars and the reserve and deficit lines.
  • Decision 7.3 leaves out the Plan Usage and Cost submenus and the Status Page chevron.
  • The Mac shows Add Account... for Codex and Copilot, and Buy Credits... for Codex. Windows shows neither.
  • Switch Account... shows only for a Claude account with CLI quota. The Claude pack has none, so its capture has no such row. The Mac shows the row for Claude and for Cursor.
  • Cursor has no Status Page row, because rust/src/providers/cursor/mod.rs:51 sets status_page_url: None.
  • The Mac secondary text color, black at 50%, measures about 3.7:1 on the fill. This PR matches the Mac, so that text is below 4.5:1.
  • Card error text uses #FF453A, the dark-mode system red. The Mac light menu uses #FF3B30, which the new --mac-error token holds. PR 3 owns the card text.

Follow-ups

  • dwm.rs sets the dark erase brush with SetWindowLongPtrW(hwnd, -10, brush). Index -10 is the class index GCLP_HBRBACKGROUND, which belongs to SetClassLongPtrW. The window call fails with error 1413 and changes nothing. The probe W:/pstack-logs/Win-CodexBar/mac-panel-chrome-scripts/brush_index_probe.ps1 measured this. The call predates this PR and runs for every window, so this PR leaves it alone.
  • The provider grid divider now shares the menu separator style. Its old 8% white line would barely show on the light fill (computed). PR 3 owns the grid style and can restyle it.
  • The spec asks for Refresh to be disabled while a refresh runs. The Mac row has no enabled state, so this PR keeps Refresh enabled.
  • begin_flyout_gesture arms a 15 s blur guard. With the grips gone, only the provider tab drag-reorder arms it. This work did not measure the blur it guards against. Manual check 11 covers that drag. A code reading suggests the matching guard in main.rs cannot fire, because main holds the tray-panel mode only in proof mode. Removing either guard is its own change.
  • useDraftNumber moved out of the float bar settings so that Panel scale can share it. It hands the value to the save and never sees the result, so a failed save leaves no sign in the slider. A save path that returns its result, plus a test with a rejected save, would fix that.
  • The 100 to 200 Panel scale bounds are written in lib/trayScale.ts, in clamp_tray_scale_percent (rust/src/settings.rs) and in rust/src/settings/preferences_document.rs. The 310 px width is written in useTrayPanelLayout.ts and in surface.rs. A Rust test that reads the TypeScript with include_str!, as panel_fill_matches_the_css_panel_background does, would keep each pair in step.
  • Some tray rules in styles.css replace the base rules' white tints with dark ones. They cover the copy button hover, the "more" grid icon, the update banner action and the credential button. A tint token that each surface sets would replace those overrides. PR 3 owns the card and grid rules.

Affected areas

Tray panel, Settings > Menu, the window geometry file, and docs/ARCHITECTURE.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a panel scale setting and selection highlights that match the system accent color.
    • Added menu actions for switching eligible accounts, opening provider usage dashboards and status pages, and viewing the app version.
  • Updates
    • The tray panel now uses a light menu design, has a fixed 310 px width, fits its height to content, and opens next to the tray.
  • Changed Behavior
    • The panel can no longer be resized or repositioned by dragging; its scale setting adjusts its display size.

The panel is a light 310 px menu (#DEDEE2, 4 px vertical padding,
separators inset 14 px) under every app theme, and the cost block shows
again. Footer rows get icons, Ctrl shortcuts in a 44 px column and an
About row with the version. Usage Dashboard and Status Page come from
get_provider_detail for the selected provider, or the only one. The
menu selection uses the Windows accent color.

The zoom slider, resize grips, move strip and stored-size sizing are
gone. The window is 310 px times the Panel scale wide and fits its
content height.
DWM gives the flyout Windows 11 rounded corners and a #8A8B8E border,
and the window erases to the panel fill, so it never flashes dark. It
has no thick frame and opens next to the tray every time.

The set_flyout_size, reset_flyout_position and flyout_stored_size
commands, the remembered placement and the stored size are removed.
get_system_accent_color reads the Windows accent for the menu
selection.
The tray panel's zoom moves from the panel itself to a 100% to 200%
slider in Settings > Menu. It saves the existing trayScalePercent
setting when the slider is released, so saved scales keep working.
Muted tray text used the tertiary color, which macOS keeps for
shortcuts. Captions such as the spend summary note read at about
1.8:1 on the panel fill. They now use the secondary color.
- Re-read the Windows accent each time the panel takes focus.
- Use black selection text when white falls below 4.5:1 on the accent.
- Drop the white plate behind the selected card.
- Hoist --mac-panel-bg to :root and derive the fill test from PANEL_FILL.
- Keep the dark erase brush call for every window, as on main.
- Drop the unused flyout minimum size.
applySize swallowed every setSize and innerSize error, so the resize
pass's own catch never saw a failed native resize. The error now
reaches that catch, which logs a warning and still reveals the panel.
- Drop comments that restate the code or describe Mac parity.
- Name the panel hairline color and the 1 px height slack.
- Rename linearChannel to srgbByteToLinear.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve content changes during resize suppression.

If the body or footer changes size after measurement but before programmaticInFlightRef clears, this guard drops its ResizeObserver notification. A stable new size does not trigger another notification, so the panel can retain the old height until another layout request occurs. Queue a post-pass check for genuine content changes while filtering measurement-only style feedback.
