Adds two optional settings, both OFF by default and listed in Settings below "Use Saves Folder".
Global Saves Folder (use_global_saves_folder): when ON, every save is stored as /saves/<ROM file name>.sav at the root of the SD card instead of next to the ROM, so copies of the same ROM file in different folders share one save. The save path is built in one place (global_save_path() in cart_load.c), which is used for N64 ROMs (including 64DD combo ROMs) and emulated ROMs.
Migrate Old Saves (migrate_saves_to_global_folder): only used while the global folder is ON. When ON, if a ROM has no global save yet but still has one in its own location (its saves subdirectory or next to the ROM, following Use Saves Folder), that save is moved into /saves with f_rename the first time the ROM is launched. If the move fails, the existing save is used where it is rather than starting a new, empty one. When OFF, per-folder saves are never touched.
Keeping migration as a separate choice means users who keep different save files in different folders can leave them as they are, while users who want everything in one place can bring their existing progress along. Turning either setting OFF moves nothing back.
Saves are matched by ROM file name, which is what lets copies share them. Two different ROMs with the same file name in different folders would also share a save; the docs call this out.
Documentation: new sections in 32_menu_settings.md and a tip in 10_getting_started_sd.md.
Motivation and Context
Popular SD card layouts keep the same ROM in more than one folder, for example a "Top 50" or favourites folder next to an A–Z tree. Today each copy gets its own saves folder, so progress made from one folder is missing when the game is started from the other. A global folder keyed by the ROM file name gives every copy the same save, without changing the default behaviour.
How Has This Been Tested?
The global folder itself has been running on my SummerCart64 since 2026-09-28, built on V0.3.4 and played on an Analogue 3D. My existing saves were moved to /saves by hand, and games started from the TOP 50 folder and from the A–Z folders now load the same save.
This branch builds on current develop with make all (no warnings).
The Migrate Old Saves move has not been tested on hardware yet.

Added an optional Global Saves Folder setting. When enabled, game saves are stored in /saves at the SD card root and shared by ROM copies with the same filename. It is off by default.
Added an optional Migrate Old Saves setting, also off by default. When enabled alongside Global Saves Folder, an existing per-folder save moves to the global folder on first launch if no global save exists. Saves moved globally are not moved back if either setting is turned off.
Documentation
Updated the setup and settings guides with details about global saves and migration.
Add a "Central Saves Folder" setting (`use_central_saves_folder`, OFF by
default). When it is ON, every save is stored as
`/saves/<ROM file name>.sav` at the root of the SD card instead of next to
the ROM, so copies of the same ROM file in different folders (for example
a favourites folder and an A-Z folder) share one save.
A save that is still in the ROM's own location (its `saves` subdirectory,
or next to the ROM) is moved into the central folder the first time the
ROM is launched, so existing progress carries over when the setting is
turned on. If that move fails, the existing save is used where it is
rather than starting a new, empty one.
This applies to N64 ROMs (including 64DD combo ROMs) and emulated ROMs.
The setting is documented in the menu settings and SD card guides.

Add a "Migrate Old Saves" setting (`migrate_saves_to_central_folder`,
OFF by default, only used while Central Saves Folder is ON). A ROM's
existing save in its own location is moved into /saves only when this is
ON. When it is OFF, per-folder saves are left untouched and a ROM without
a central save starts a new one, so turning on the central folder never
moves saves for users who keep different save files in different folders.

Walkthrough
This change adds settings for global save storage and migration. When enabled, N64 and emulator save loading can use a shared /saves directory and optionally move an existing per-folder save there.

Adds global save-path selection for N64 and emulator saves. When migration is enabled, an existing local save moves only if the global save does not exist; a failed move uses the local path. The documentation describes the settings and save paths.

Users who changed their save-folder setting can launch a game without their existing progress and then be unable to migrate it automatically. A failure to create the global folder can also block loading despite an existing local save. Resolve these cases before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to bbace
Both options are off by default and affect saves on the same SD card. Enabling them deliberately shares saves by filename and can permanently move existing files. Failed moves retain the local save, but recovery guarantees for interrupted moves have not been established.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The visible expansion is within the selected storage device: a save can now be consumed and subsequently written by launches from multiple directories that resolve to the same save basename. This increases shared-data coupling, but the reviewed change does not establish cross-device, remote-service, or tenant exposure.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The destination is constructed from the existing storage prefix, a fixed saves directory, and the final slash-delimited component of the selected save path. The new feature is gated by a false-default setting; moving a legacy file requires the separate false-default migration setting.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The existence guard and rename-error fallback provide normal-execution failure containment. They do not establish crash consistency or concurrent-writer safety. Those guarantees remain unresolved, rather than verified defects; a successful rename followed by a load error leaves the destination available for retry.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Consider showing the selected legacy source and global destination before enabling migration, including a warning that unrelated ROMs with the same save basename share data and that disabling global mode does not restore moved files.

As requested in review, use "global" rather than "central": the settings
are now "Global Saves Folder" (`use_global_saves_folder`) and "Migrate Old
Saves" (`migrate_saves_to_global_folder`), the helper is
`global_save_path()`, and the docs say "global" throughout.

Does this also apply to save files from emulated games (like the Game Boy and SNES emulator on the flashcart)? If this is not feasible, maybe emulator save files could be at least symlinked or copied to a backup folder.

Use an existing local save if global directory creation fails.
If migration is enabled and /saves cannot be created, this return occurs before the local save is checked. Both callers then stop the ROM load, even when an existing local save could be used in place. Check for that save and return its path on directory-creation failure; keep the error when no usable save exists. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Check both legacy save locations before migration.
If a user changed Use Saves Folder before enabling migration, this branch checks only the current location. An existing save in the other location remains untouched. flashcart_load_save then creates a new global save, and the existing-save check prevents migration on later launches. Check both the adjacent .sav path and the ROM’s saves subdirectory before creating a global save. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Description
Adds two optional settings, both OFF by default and listed in Settings below "Use Saves Folder".
Global Saves Folder (
use_global_saves_folder): when ON, every save is stored as/saves/<ROM file name>.savat the root of the SD card instead of next to the ROM, so copies of the same ROM file in different folders share one save. The save path is built in one place (global_save_path()incart_load.c), which is used for N64 ROMs (including 64DD combo ROMs) and emulated ROMs.Migrate Old Saves (
migrate_saves_to_global_folder): only used while the global folder is ON. When ON, if a ROM has no global save yet but still has one in its own location (itssavessubdirectory or next to the ROM, following Use Saves Folder), that save is moved into/saveswithf_renamethe first time the ROM is launched. If the move fails, the existing save is used where it is rather than starting a new, empty one. When OFF, per-folder saves are never touched.Keeping migration as a separate choice means users who keep different save files in different folders can leave them as they are, while users who want everything in one place can bring their existing progress along. Turning either setting OFF moves nothing back.
Saves are matched by ROM file name, which is what lets copies share them. Two different ROMs with the same file name in different folders would also share a save; the docs call this out.
