HelpOutlined and ErrorOutlined are not outlined variants #49521

Open

Description

@kneczaj

Steps to reproduce

Steps:

  1. Look at these icons:
    https://mui.com/material-ui/material-icons/?query=Error&theme=Outlined
    https://mui.com/material-ui/material-icons/?query=Help&theme=Outlined
  2. Notice they are the same as filled variants.
  3. Notice that material also provides ErrorOutlineOutlined and HelpOutlineOutlined which are true outlined versions exported by the package, but they are even not present in the documentation

Current behavior

I think that somebody made a mistake here and they have assigned filled variants to outlined export.

Expected behavior

Expected:

  1. ErrorOutlined should be the same as ErrorOutlineOutlined
  2. HelpOutlined should be the same as HelpOutlineOutlined

    @Arkamit

    I am updating an enterprise application from MUI v7 to v9, and I have also noticed this problem. Please provide an update on this.

    You're right that ErrorOutlined and HelpOutlined draw the same filled shapes as Error and Help. In @mui/icons-material the SVG paths are identical. I don't think the fix is to change ErrorOutlined, though. The real problem is how the v9 change that removed the legacy *Outline icons was documented and surfaced.

    What's happening

    • @mui/icons-material builds the *Outlined variants from the "Outlined" style of Google's Material Icons. For error, help and star, that style is a filled glyph, so ErrorOutlined, HelpOutlined and StarOutlined match their filled versions. Redrawing ErrorOutlined as an outline would make it differ from the upstream icon and break apps that use it today. Google publishes the outlined shapes as separate icons (error_outline, help_outline), and you get those through the ErrorOutline* / HelpOutline* exports.
    • v9 removed ErrorOutline, HelpOutline, StarOutline and 20 other *Outline exports. The v9 migration guide says each was an exact duplicate of its *Outlined counterpart and tells you to rename imports to the Outlined suffix. That holds for icons like InfoOutlined and CheckCircleOutlined. For ErrorOutline, HelpOutline and StarOutline it doesn't: following the guide swaps an outlined icon for a filled one. The removed ErrorOutline had the same path as ErrorOutlineOutlined, not ErrorOutlined. That explains what you saw when moving from v7 to v9.
    • The icon search page only indexes icons that have a filled base name. With ErrorOutline and HelpOutline gone, ErrorOutlineOutlined, HelpOutlineOutlined and their Rounded, Sharp and TwoTone versions are still exported but no longer show up in search. That's why you couldn't find them in the docs.

    You can see this directly from the URLs in your report; I haven't checked it in a running app.

    I didn't find an existing issue reporting this.

    Workaround

    Import the *OutlineOutlined variants, which are still exported in v9 and draw the outlined shape that ErrorOutline / HelpOutline used to:

    import ErrorOutlineOutlinedIcon from '@mui/icons-material/ErrorOutlineOutlined';
    import HelpOutlineOutlinedIcon from '@mui/icons-material/HelpOutlineOutlined';

    ErrorOutlineRounded, ErrorOutlineSharp, ErrorOutlineTwoTone and the matching HelpOutline* variants are also still available.

    Next steps

    • Maintainers: decide whether to fix the v9 migration guide so it points ErrorOutline → ErrorOutlineOutlined, HelpOutline → HelpOutlineOutlined and StarOutline → StarOutlineOutlined, and check whether any other removed *Outline icon has the same problem. Also decide whether to restore the removed base exports whose *Outlined counterpart isn't a real duplicate.
    • Maintainers: make the icon search page show themed variants like ErrorOutlineOutlined that no longer have a filled base export.
    • You: nothing more is needed. Please say if ErrorOutlineOutlined / HelpOutlineOutlined don't render the outlined shapes you expect.

    Agent-generated diagnosis; conclusions have not been independently verified. Workflow run.
