feat(proto): add a handshake idle timeout - #34
Conversation
Until the handshake completes, the idle timer uses TransportConfig::handshake_idle_timeout (default 10s, as msquic's HandshakeIdleTimeoutMs), then the negotiated idle timeout. A 2s idle timeout otherwise expires at 3x the initial PTO, just before the second Initial probe, leaving a client two flights: the impaired drills' 'timed out' connects. moq-dev/noq#34 carries the same field for the stack the drills run on; the quest now tracks the pin bump. Until the handshake completes, the idle timer uses TransportConfig::handshake_idle_timeout (default 10s, as msquic's HandshakeIdleTimeoutMs) instead of max_idle_timeout, then switches to the negotiated idle timeout once established. Before an RTT sample the PTO is 999ms, so a 2s idle timeout was armed at 3 * PTO = 2997ms while the second Initial probe is due at 2997ms plus timer slop. A client with a short idle timeout, chosen to detect a dead peer quickly, got only two Initial flights before giving up. A handshake to an unreachable peer now fails after the handshake idle timeout rather than the idle timeout; set both for the old behavior. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughTransport configuration now includes a handshake idle timeout that defaults to 10 seconds. Connection timer and PTO behavior use this timeout during the handshake, then apply the negotiated idle timeout after establishment. Endpoint acceptance rejects incoming connections that exceed the handshake timeout. Regression tests cover client probe timing and stale incoming connections. Priority: ⬇️ Low Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The new handshake idle timeout accepts any Duration. A very large value, such as Duration::MAX used to mean "never time out", could panic the endpoint when it accepts an incoming connection. Default settings are unaffected. Clamp or reject oversized values, or use checked addition, before merging. Pre-merge checks |

Apply the handshake timeout before accepting Incoming
When server code delays calling Incoming::accept, this timeout does not govern that portion of the handshake: Endpoint::accept still rejects stale Initial packets using server_config.transport.max_idle_timeout. For example, with the defaults an Initial can remain queued for 20 seconds despite the new 10-second handshake timeout, and with max_idle_timeout(None) it can remain queued indefinitely; acceptance then creates a connection and starts a fresh handshake timer. Use handshake_idle_timeout for the stale-Initial check so the configured limit covers the handshake from receipt of the Initial.

Fixed in 9f30274: Endpoint::accept now drops an Initial as stale once handshake_idle_timeout has passed since it arrived, instead of max_idle_timeout, so the limit covers the wait for accept and an unset idle timeout no longer lets an Initial wait forever. Test: stale_initial_uses_handshake_idle_timeout (accept 11s after the Initial times out; it was accepted before the change).

…accept A server that delays Incoming::accept still dropped stale Initials by max_idle_timeout, so the handshake limit did not cover that wait, and with no idle timeout an Initial could wait forever. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Use the handshake timeout when capping handshake PTOs
When handshake_idle_timeout is configured below 25 seconds while max_idle_timeout remains longer or disabled, the handshake timer uses the new value here, but pto_time_and_space still selects its retransmission cap from path.idle_timeout.or(self.idle_timeout). For example, with the default 333 ms initial RTT and a 2-second handshake timeout, the second Initial probe is scheduled at the same 2997 ms instant as the idle deadline; TimerTable processes the connection idle timer before the path loss timer, so the connection times out without sending that probe, recreating the short-timeout failure this option is meant to avoid. The PTO cap should consult the effective handshake timeout while the connection is handshaking.

Fixed in e6b21af: pto_time_and_space now picks the probe interval cap from handshake_idle_timeout while handshaking, the same timeout reset_idle_timeout arms. Test: handshake_idle_timeout_caps_probe_interval (idle timeout disabled, 7s handshake timeout, the first three flights lost; the next probe goes at about 6.05s with the fast cap and about 7.05s, past the deadline, without it). With defaults this moves the handshake to the 1s fast cap, since 10s is under the 25s threshold.

pto_time_and_space picked the probe interval cap from the idle timeout, while the handshake is now bounded by handshake_idle_timeout, so a short handshake timeout with a long or disabled idle timeout got the slow 2s cap. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Apply the PTO floor before rejecting queued Initials
When handshake_idle_timeout is shorter than three Initial PTOs (for example, 500 ms with the default 333 ms initial RTT), this check rejects an Incoming after the raw 500 ms, while an immediately accepted connection uses reset_idle_timeout and remains alive for max(timeout, 3 * PTO)—about 3 seconds. Thus merely delaying accept can terminate a handshake while the client is still within the probe window the connection timer deliberately preserves; compute the stale deadline using the same PTO floor.

Leaving this as is. The connection timer's 3x PTO floor protects this endpoint's own probe schedule, and a queued Initial has none: the server has sent nothing yet. Dropping a stale Initial also removes its index entry, so the client's next Initial probe (same DCID) arrives as a fresh Incoming the application can accept, and the handshake continues rather than ending. A handshake timeout under 3 PTOs is also a deliberate choice to give up early. Matching the floor here would mean duplicating the PTO derivation in the endpoint for that edge.

handshake_idle_timeout is an unbounded Duration, so Duration::MAX overflowed the Instant addition in Endpoint::accept and reset_idle_timeout. Such a deadline now never fires. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Ports moq-dev/noq#34's review fixes: a Duration::MAX handshake idle timeout no longer panics when added to an Instant, in the idle timer or the stale-Initial check. noq#34's third fix, the handshake idle timeout picking the PTO interval cap, has no counterpart: quinn's PTO backoff has no idle-based cap. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Carries moq-dev/noq#32 (reset the PTO backoff on discarding Initial or Handshake keys) and moq-dev/noq#34 (TransportConfig::handshake_idle_timeout, default 10s), which fix the impaired drills' handshake timeouts. Deletes the impaired-handshake quest. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Follows #32, released in 2.0.3. Rebased onto
main.Problem
Before an RTT sample the PTO is 999ms. With a 2s
max_idle_timeout, the idle timer is armed atmax(2s, 3 * PTO)= 2997ms, while the client's Initial probes go at 0, 999ms, and 2997ms plus timer slop. So the second probe always lands a millisecond or two after the idle deadline, and a client with a short idle timeout gets only two Initial flights. moq-dev/moq's impaired drills (5% loss) hit this asNoq(Connection("timed out"))in about 1 of 100 cluster runs and 1 of 480 republish runs. Each qlog shows the idle timer firing 1-2ms before the second probe. Details are in moq-dev/moq#5163.A short idle timeout is chosen to detect a dead peer quickly, but it also cuts the handshake short.
Fix
Add
TransportConfig::handshake_idle_timeout(Duration), defaulting to 10s (msquic'sHandshakeIdleTimeoutMsdefault). It is local only and not a transport parameter.max_idle_timeout, still floored at 3x PTO.reset_idle_timeoutnow stops the timer when the effective timeout isNone, so a disabled idle timeout doesn't keep the handshake deadline around.Endpoint::acceptdrops an Initial as stale once the server's handshake idle timeout has passed since it arrived, instead of itsmax_idle_timeout, so the limit also covers an Initial waiting foraccept.Duration::MAX) never fires, instead of overflowing theInstantaddition.Behavior change
A handshake to an unreachable peer now fails after the handshake idle timeout (10s by default) rather than the idle timeout. The default
max_idle_timeoutis 30s, so the default case fails sooner. A config with an idle timeout under 10s now waits 10s.noq'shandshake_timeouttest asserted the old behavior, so it now sets both timeouts. A server drops an Initial still waiting foracceptafter 10s by default, rather than 30s, or never with no idle timeout. With the defaults, handshake probes now use the 1s fast cap instead of the 2s one.Tests
handshake_outlasts_short_idle_timeout: the client's first flight and its first probe (sent 2ms late) are lost, under a 2s idle timeout. It times out without the change and connects with it.stale_initial_uses_handshake_idle_timeout: an Initial accepted 11s after it arrived (past the 10s handshake idle timeout, inside the 30s idle timeout) times out. It was accepted before the change.handshake_idle_timeout_caps_probe_interval: with the idle timeout disabled and a 7s handshake timeout, the first three flights are lost; the next probe goes at about 6.05s and connects. With the 2s cap it would go at about 7.05s, after the deadline.unbounded_handshake_idle_timeout: connects withDuration::MAXon both sides; it panicked before.cargo test -p moq-noq-proto --lib: 494 passed.cargo test -p moq-noq -p web-transport-moq: passed.cargo clippy -p moq-noq-proto --tests: clean.API: adds
