Problem

Client capture, simulcast rate adaptation, and OBS work sat in m2 or had no quest, below their maintainer priority (2026-10-09).

Approach

  • Promote from m2 to m1: iOS capture, Android capture, mobile completion, discover media headroom (quic-probe), the viewer up-switch, and native enabled (native players skip a disabled rendition and move off one disabled mid-playback), which rung disable now requires. Every reference is updated, and they are ranked in quest/m1/README.md below their blockers.
  • New m1 quests:
    • simulcast-rung-disable [L]: JS, Rust/FFI, and OBS publishers stop encoding the top renditions their bandwidth grant cannot fund, advertise enabled: false, and re-enable with hysteresis.
    • obs-multitrack [M]: OBS's native multitrack video encoders publish as simulcast renditions, configured like OBS multitrack and over obs-websocket.
    • obs-studio/ questline "MoQ in obs-studio": a native MoQ output and service in obs-studio, with a condition quest [XS] for its maintainers' agreement in principle.
    • portrait-ladder [S]: transcode rungs are sized by the source's short side, so a 1080x1920 source gets correct rungs.
  • Tidy quest references, comments, and test fixture names.

Decisions:

  • ✅ Mobile SDK direction: the upstream Swift and Kotlin bindings over moq-ffi, with Rust owning capture and codecs.
  • ✅ Native capture sets the catalog rotation (portrait phones), linking Video rotation metadata not propagated from mobile camera publish to watch renderer #933.
  • ✅ Rung disable uses one rule in moq_mux::rate, shared with the transcode ladder controller and audio.
  • ✅ OBS multitrack is Related to rung disable, not blocked on it; its goal covers configuration and catalog correctness only.
  • ✅ Rung disable requires native enabled, so a disabled rung never strands a native player.
  • ✅ The plugin stays the vehicle until obs-studio carries MoQ natively. The maintainer does the outreach, and agents never post to obs-studio without explicit approval.

Impact

  • Public API: none. Wire: none. Quest and docs changes, comment-only Rust edits, and one test fixture path.

Alternatives

  • Making obs-multitrack require simulcast-rung-disable: rejected, since the OBS output already keeps one track per encoder and the multitrack configuration work does not need the rate rule first.

Follow-ups

None beyond the quests above.

Gates: quest check passes (425 documents), and just check passes against current main.

Promote mobile capture and completion, the capacity probe, and the viewer
up-switch from m2 to m1 by maintainer priority. Add simulcast rung disable,
OBS multitrack, the MoQ in obs-studio questline with its maintainer
condition, and portrait transcode ladders.

Also tidy quest references, comments, and test fixture names.

P2 Badge Remove rung disabling from this quest's completion goal

The goal makes adaptive rung disabling part of completing obs-multitrack, but the implementation plan contains no such work and lists simulcast-rung-disable only as Related, so this quest can finish while its stated goal remains unmet. Either limit this goal to exposing OBS multitrack encoders as renditions, or make the rung-disable quest a Required blocker.

Reviewed commit: a88fbbd

Direction: reusing the shared rate policy, measuring capacity probing first, and keeping OBS multitrack configuration independently shippable are sensible. Two planning corrections:

  • [P2] Make native disabled-rendition handling a prerequisite (quest/m1/simulcast-rung-disable.md:10-12, related-only dependency at line 61). “Viewers already skip disabled renditions” is not true for native playback. moq play selects from snapshot.video.renditions without checking enabled (rs/moq-cli/src/play/media.rs:158-160), and Playback::wants refuses reselection while its track is still playing (playback.rs:93-95). If this new policy disables that live rung while retaining its track, the native player stays on the now-idle subscription instead of moving to an enabled lower rung. Promote/require native-enabled before this rollout, or explicitly bound the initial rollout to compatible viewers. Include a native mid-playback high-to-low disable test, not just publisher/FFI tests.
  • [P2] Narrow quest/m1/obs-multitrack.md:8-10 to multitrack configuration and catalog correctness; keep adaptive disabling in the separate quest. I independently found the same goal/dependency mismatch already reported in Codex's comment. Narrowing the goal preserves the PR's stated decision against making it a blocker.

Verification: reviewed all 51 file diffs and relevant selection, encoding, ladder, and OBS code through GitHub; added root-relative links resolve. Quest CI passed; other checks were pending/running. No local build, runtime, or device tests were run. State, head, and reviews rechecked immediately before posting.

Walkthrough

The M1 roadmap adds new quest plans and promotes mobile capture, mobile completion, the capacity probe, and viewer up-switching from m2. Existing quest documents receive generalized descriptions and updated or removed external references. Source comments are revised, and one relay test fixture path changes. No executable behavior changes are described.

Move media probing out of the m2 list.

Lines 12–13 still place media probing in m2, but quest/m1/quic-probe.md marks it as promoted to m1 on 2026-10-09. Update this classification to keep the roadmap priorities consistent. The M1 quest records the promotion.

Qualify the claim about DDS over WAN.

Line 64 says “Nobody runs DDS over a WAN.” Fast DDS documents configured WAN/Internet communication, and ROS 2 lists Fast DDS as a supported middleware. Replace this absolute claim with the specific WAN limitations this quest addresses. (fast-dds.docs.eprosima.com)

Grok review of 4e5c086 (full review, no earlier Grok review on this PR)

Quest/docs reshuffle plus comment-only Rust edits and one test fixture path. I spot-checked the code claims in the new quests against main and they hold: OBS_OUTPUT_MULTI_TRACK_VIDEO and the per-encoder video_tracks map in cpp/obs/src/moq-output.cpp, rs/moq-mux/src/container/flv/import.rs, Control in rs/moq-mux/src/rate.rs, Playback::wants in rs/moq-cli/src/play/playback.rs, the JS/Rust encoder paths, and every linked quest target (ladder controller/README, track-priority-scope, obs rate-control, #2848) exist.

No blocking issues.

Non-blocking:

  • quest/m1/obs-multitrack.md refers to doc/bin/obs.md's "OBS publishes one rendition" section; on main that text sits under the heading ## Source quality and moq-transcode (line 24–26). Naming the real heading would make the pointer findable.
  • rs/moq-relay/tests/cluster_unknown.rs fixture rename (opalin/ to robot/) is just a path string, and nothing else in the repo references it, so it's safe.
  • Several Rust comments drop the moq-dev/moq.pro#814 / moq.pro#338 references. That's fine for a public repo, but it does lose the trail back to the incident; consider whether a public issue link should replace them.
  • CI (Quest, Android, macOS, Windows) is still pending on this head; the quest check gate is what matters here.

Verdict: MERGE once the Quest check is green.

Reviewed commit: 4e5c086

Both P2 planning findings from my previous review are addressed:

No remaining or new actionable findings in this update. The native prerequisite and independently shippable OBS configuration are the right direction; these changes correct the plan, with implementation still owned by the quests.

Verification: reviewed the seven-file fix and surrounding plans/selection code, accounted for the main merge separately, and checked added root-relative link targets. GitHub-only inspection; no local build, runtime, or device tests. Current-head CI, including Quest, was pending/running. Rechecked open/ready state, head, and reviews immediately before posting.
