Problem

TS passthrough (quest/m1/ts-passthrough.md, deleted here as complete) needs a lane that publishes
a transport stream without demultiplexing it, for what the demultiplexed lane cannot carry:
TS-level scrambling, private PIDs, and PSI and SI as authored. None exists. This PR is the import
half and the m2ts catalog section. As the quest audit suggested, it splits the export half into
TS passthrough export.

Approach

  • moq import ts --passthrough [--pcr-pid <pid>] publishes every 188-byte packet, in order, on one
track (<n>.m2ts) named by a new m2ts root section of the hang catalog,
{ track, randomAccess, muxRate }. No video or audio rendition is published. --passthrough
conflicts with --program, and --pcr-pid requires it.

  • The importer reads the PAT and the clock program's PMT with the existing psi.rs parsers and
nothing else past the adaptation field, so a scrambled feed groups and paces like its clear twin.
The clock is the PCR_PID of the PAT's first program, or --pcr-pid.

  • It writes through container::Producer (catalog.media_raw, legacy container, data kind), so the
track is enrolled in the broadcast's timelines and claims its peak rate like any other, and a group
    start is a keyframe.

  • An object runs from one PCR on the clock PID to the next. It is stamped with the PCR time of its
first byte, interpolated at the rate between the PCRs either side and floored to microseconds. A
PCR stamps the byte holding the last bit of its base, ten bytes into its packet.

  • Timestamps never step back. They are an unwrapped 64-bit count of 27 MHz ticks: a forward step of
at most half the 2^33 × 300 period adds, across the 33-bit wrap included.

    • A PCR with discontinuity_indicator that steps forward adds its step too, after the bytes before
it are timed at the rate before it. It closes the group with discontinuity(), so the break is a
skipped sequence, as a time-base break is on the demultiplexed lane, and starts the next. A
retransmitted flagged PCR declares one break.
    • A step back ends the import: PcrRewindError without the flag, PcrRestartError with it. An
importer never restarts a broadcast in-process (decided 2026-10-08 in quest: audit the whole tree (2026-10-08) #5058); a restarted source
is a new broadcast from a new import.
  • A group starts at:

    • random_access_indicator on the clock program's video PID, or on the clock PID when it has no
      video;
    • a flagged forward jump. A splice packet that is both a flagged jump and a random access point
      keeps its break marker and still counts as random access;
    • the first PCR at least 1 s after the group's start, for a source that never marks random
      access, so such a group spans 1 s plus at most one PCR interval;
    • the object that would take the group past 16 MiB or 4,096 objects, half of moq-net's
MAX_CACHE_BYTES and MAX_GROUP_FRAMES. A source with a PCR in nearly every packet reaches the
      object bound first.

Objects are never split. More than 16 MiB without a PCR is refused (PcrGapError), since those
bytes can be neither timed nor split.

  • randomAccess is true while the PAT lists one program whose PMT declares at most one video stream
and whose own PCR_PID is the clock, and only if every group so far started at a random access
indicator. A --pcr-pid that no PMT names starts groups at its own random access points, which
mark no program's decoding boundary, so it publishes false. The first group that starts any other
way, or while the layout is not single-program, republishes the section with it false, and it
stays false for the rest of the import even if the layout returns to one program, since groups
from the multi-program period stay cached. muxRate comes from the existing mux_rate.rs meter
and is absent for a variable rate, as in mpegts.

  • Nothing is published until the PAT, the clock program's PMT and a PCR have arrived, and the first
group waits for the next group start. Bytes before it are dropped, and the track is
byte-identical to the input from its first group on. On the Kyrion capture that is about 2,600
packets: its first PAT is packet 804 and the PMT after it packet 1,654.

  • The packet grid is found by four sync bytes a packet apart, at the first offset in the buffered
input that has them, whatever the chunking; a stream too short for four is settled at the end of
input on the packets it has. 192- and 204-byte sources are refused.

  • The draft gains "The m2ts Section": objects, groups, timestamps, and a mapping onto MSFTS's
mpeg2ts packaging (strip the timestamp; mpeg2tsMode unmodified-program for one program,
otherwise unmodified-multiplex). The comparison section cited m2ts, m2tsPmtPid and
m2tsPsiInterval, which neither MSFTS -01 nor its editor's copy has any more; it now uses the
    mpeg2ts names.

  • Following doc/AGENTS.md, the site gains one clause in the CLI's MPEG-TS import paragraph and a
short "Transport streams" section in the hang concept page; the behaviour above is in the module's
    rustdoc and the draft.

Impact

  • A new import mode and an additive m2ts catalog section (hang::Catalog is non_exhaustive);
    nothing existing changes.
  • Catalog::media() is unchanged, so the MSF catalog lists nothing for the track: its frames carry a
varint timestamp before the packets, which MSFTS objects do not.
  • export ts does not read the track yet, js/hang does not parse m2ts, and the import logs no
TR 101 290 counters in this mode.
  • Since the timestamps carry a forward jump, a subscriber whose budget is shorter than the jump, which
is at most the track's 30 s max age, finds the groups before it stale once the jump is out, as on
    the demultiplexed lane.

Alternatives

  • Listing the track in mpegts: rejected in the quest, since that section's members record what
demultiplexing loses, and all of it is in-band here.
  • A flagged rewind as a new timebase inside the broadcast: rejected in quest: plan follow-ups from the final-head PR audit #5038's audit, since timestamps
must never go backwards within one broadcast.
  • Closing a forward jump up, so the timestamps run on as though it were not there: the bytes carry
the jump, so the output would no longer say when each object's bytes were sent.
  • A fallback of every N PCRs: a time bound needs no N and holds whatever the PCR rate.
  • Splitting an object at the size bound: not done, so that every object still runs from one PCR to
the next and carries that PCR's time.

Validation

  • 28 importer tests in passthrough_test.rs, on the Kyrion capture and synthesized fixtures. They
cover the quest's import cases (a scrambled twin; two programs on one clock and two video streams
in one program publishing randomAccess false; the clock on the audio PID grouping at video random
access; the clock found behind a PMT split across packets), plus byte identity from the first
group, independence from chunking, interpolation, the PCR wrap, a flagged forward jump behind a
skipped sequence, a flagged rewind refused as a restart, a break before the first group, an
unflagged rewind refused, a retransmitted break, the one-second fallback, both size bounds, a
stopped clock refused, 192- and 204-byte sources refused, the mux rate, --pcr-pid publishing
randomAccess false, leading junk at five chunk sizes, and a stream shorter than four packets.
  • hang: the section round-trips, randomAccess is always written, and absent reads as false.
  • CLI: flag parsing, and a publish test that the track is a suffix of the input with no renditions.
  • Relay: ts_passthrough_crosses_a_relay_through_a_flagged_jump publishes the capture twice, the
second copy's PCRs moved 20 s forward with its first flagged, through test_relay on
moq-lite-06 and moq-transport-14. The subscribed track is byte-identical to the input from the
first group, every group arrives whole, and the only missing sequence is the break marker. On
lite, a subscriber joining after the end with a 10 s budget reads every group from the jump on and
none the jump left behind; an IETF subscription starts at the newest group, so that check is
    lite-only.
  • Review fixes, each with a test that fails without it: a flagged jump on a random access packet
kept its break (a_flagged_jump_forward_starts_a_group_behind_a_break, with and without the
indicator), and randomAccess lost to a second program stays lost
    (random_access_lost_to_a_second_program_stays_lost).
  • With the discontinuity() call removed, the forward-jump importer test and the relay test both
fail on the missing break marker.
  • just check passes. The drafts recipe is skipped locally for lack of kramdown-rfc; the doc
site's translator test passes the revised draft. After rebasing onto docs: keep the site on features and correct publisher restarts #5033, which touched only
docs, just fix, the markdown check and quest check pass again.

Follow-ups

  • TS passthrough export: moq export ts --passthrough --delay <dur> on the fixed-delay release stage.
  • An MSF converter for the track, if MSF subscribers are to read it.

Two P2 findings:

  • rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/passthrough.rs:351-364: the size probe searches only the first packet-width of offsets, then discards everything except the final 816 bytes. With 204 junk bytes followed by a valid 188-byte stream in one large decode call, all three stride checks fail even though the valid grid is present; almost the entire stream (including PAT/PMT) is discarded, and finish never reprocesses the tail. Smaller chunks can recover earlier, violating chunk-independent output. Scan candidate starts throughout the buffered region before discarding confirmed-stream bytes, and add leading-junk/chunk-size regressions. The same probe/finish path also silently ignores an EOF buffer below 816 bytes.
  • rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/passthrough.rs:656-663: an override PID not named by any PMT uses that PID's random-access flag, yet single still comes from the unrelated first program. The existing override fixture (video 0x100, PMT clock 0x101, override 0x1ee) therefore advertises randomAccess=true even though its groups need not start at video access points. Keep randomAccess false unless the chosen access PID can establish the program's decoding boundary; assert the flag in that fixture.

Direction: a separate whole-multiplex track and bounded PCR-based framing fit the stated use case. Export/MSF/JS support is explicitly separate work, not a missing part of this import-only draft.

Verification: reviewed all changed code, draft/catalog/CLI integration and tests; checked probe bounds and override selection with small local algorithm reproductions. No Rust suite, actual TS ingest or relay tests were run. Draft COMMENT only, not merge approval.

Holding this for rework. The maintainer decided on 2026-10-07, in #5038, that a flagged backward PCR discontinuity in passthrough is a restart, as quest/m0/broadcast-epoch/ts-restart.md already decides for the demultiplexed lane. The passthrough broadcast finishes cleanly, and the rest of the input continues as a new broadcast at the same path under a fresh epoch. Object timestamps must never go backwards within one broadcast.

This PR does the opposite: it writes groups directly to get past the TimestampRewind refusal, and its relay test publishes backward time. Rework it so that:

  • a backward flag ends the broadcast and restarts under a new epoch, reusing ts-restart's path (now a Required of ts-passthrough.md);
  • a forward flag starts a group;
  • an unflagged rewind stays fatal.

Quest audit (2026-10-08), updated: the maintainer dropped the in-process TS restart (#4582 closed as not planned). A PCR rewind, flagged or not, is fatal on both lanes, so this PR should refuse a backward discontinuity rather than start a new timebase inside the same broadcast. It no longer waits on anything. The audit also suggests splitting ts-passthrough's export half into its own quest, so this PR can land the import half and shrink the quest.

Reworked along the quest audit, and rebased onto main:

  • A flagged backward PCR now ends the import with PcrRestartError, as an unflagged one ends it with PcrRewindError. Restarting under a fresh epoch is left to ts-restart, and quest/m1/ts-passthrough.md now holds only that step.
  • The export half is its own quest, quest/m1/ts-passthrough-export.md, so this PR is the import half and the m2ts section.
  • A flagged forward PCR closes its group with discontinuity() and starts the next, so the break is a skipped sequence, as a time-base break is on the demultiplexed lane. The relay test checks that the marker is the only missing sequence, and both it and the importer test fail with the call removed.
  • The track is written through container::Producer, so it is enrolled in the broadcast's timelines and claims its rate like any other.

The two P2 findings:

  • The packet grid is now found at the first offset in the whole buffered input with four sync bytes a packet apart, so leading junk no longer depends on chunking, and a stream too short for four packets is settled at end of input. A new test covers leading junk at five chunk sizes, and another the short stream.
  • A --pcr-pid that no PMT names publishes randomAccess false, since its random access points mark no program's decoding boundary. The override fixture now asserts false.

just check passed before the rebase; after it, since #5033 touched only docs, just fix, the markdown check and quest check pass. The doc edits are cut down to what doc/AGENTS.md now asks for, with the detail in the rustdoc and the draft.

Rebase notes from the 2026-10-08 quest audit (#5058, #5063):

  • msfts-convergence moved to quest/m3/msfts-convergence.md; apply your edit there.
  • Main decided 2026-10-08 that importers never restart in-process: any PCR rewind is fatal, and quest/m0/broadcast-epoch/ts-restart.md is deleted. Drop the "restarts under a new epoch on a flagged rewind" rewrite and that link; keep only the export half (your ts-passthrough-export.md).
  • Keep the link fixes to the export quest in quest/m3/msfts-convergence.md and quest/m2/ts-hitless.md.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds an m2ts catalog section and a Rust importer that publishes an MPEG-TS multiplex as one packet-preserving track. The importer detects packet framing, reads PAT/PMT and PCR information, and creates timestamped objects and groups. The CLI accepts import ts --passthrough with an optional PCR PID. Tests cover import behavior and relay publication. Documentation and quest references describe the format and passthrough export work.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to dc30b

Passthrough import can advertise random access again after a temporary multi-program or multi-video period. Players and relays may then treat groups from that period as clean decoding starts. The trigger is uncommon and the fix is small, so the change is mergeable with this follow-up.

Adds moq import ts --passthrough, which publishes the raw 188-byte transport stream on one .m2ts track. Objects run PCR to PCR, groups start at random-access, discontinuity, fallback, or size boundaries, and a new m2ts catalog section describes the track. It covers what the demultiplexed lane can't (scrambling, private PIDs, authored PSI/SI), and the import is scoped well: unwrapped monotonic PCR time, explicit rewind and restart errors, refusal of 192- and 204-byte packets, and group bounds at half of moq-net's cache limits. This review covered passthrough.rs, the catalog section, and the CLI wiring in depth, and skimmed the tests and draft text.

Findings (non-blocking)

  1. finish() leaves the m2ts catalog section in place, while abort() removes it (passthrough.rs, abort vs finish). That may be intended, since a finished track is still a valid track. But it's asymmetric with abort, so please confirm it matches what the demultiplexed mpegts lane does when it finishes.
  2. The PcrGapError bound counts closed objects still waiting to be timed. The 16 MiB check in packet() adds up open plus everything in queue. Queued objects only drain at the next PCR, so a high-bitrate mux with a long but legal PCR gap is refused at 16 MiB of backlog, not at 16 MiB inside one object. The message says "no PCR for N bytes," which is right; the doc's "more than 16 MiB without a PCR" matches. Just make sure that's the intended threshold for 100 Mbit/s or faster contribution feeds, where a 1.3 s PCR gap would trip it.
  3. No test locks in the end-of-input path. finish() calls probe_packet_size(true) for streams shorter than four sync runs, then drains objects after the final PCR. A test with a short stream, and one with trailing bytes after the last PCR, would pin how those objects get timed (locate extrapolating past the last sample).

CI is green.

Verdict: MERGE. Reviewed head: 0b03ff32.

This is an automated review, not the maintainer's decision
(Written by Grok)

`moq import ts --passthrough [--pcr-pid <pid>]` publishes every 188-byte packet
of a transport stream, in order, on one track that a new `m2ts` root section of
the hang catalog names, for what demultiplexing cannot carry: TS-level
scrambling, private PIDs, and PSI and SI as authored. It writes through
`container::Producer`, so the track joins the broadcast's timelines. The
section stays in the catalog for as long as the importer lives, however the
track ends, as the demultiplexed lane's entries do.

Objects run from one PCR on the clock PID to the next and are stamped with the
PCR time of their first byte, unwrapped into a 64-bit tick count across the
33-bit wrap, so the timestamps never step back. A flagged PCR that jumps
forward carries the jump and starts a group behind a break marker. A PCR that
steps back ends the import, flagged or not: a flagged one is a restart, which
is new content, so a supervisor that carries on publishes it as a new broadcast
under a new epoch. Groups start at video random access points, at a flagged
forward jump, after a second without either, or where the next object would
take a group past half of moq-net's group cache. Bytes before the first group
are dropped, so byte identity holds from there.

The draft specifies the section and maps it onto MSFTS; the comparison now uses
MSFTS's `mpeg2ts` names. This lands the import half of ts-passthrough, so that
quest is replaced by ts-passthrough-export, which holds the export half.

Rebased onto main along your notes: quest/m1/ts-passthrough.md is gone and the m1 README lists only ts-passthrough-export.md; the msfts-convergence edit is in quest/m3/; the link fixes in msfts-convergence and ts-hitless are kept. A PCR that steps back ends the import, flagged (PcrRestartError) or not (PcrRewindError); nothing restarts in-process.

On the automated review:

  1. finish() now matches the demultiplexed lane: the m2ts section is owned by a guard that removes it when the importer drops, however the track ended, as VerbatimEntry does for verbatim tracks. Before, a finished importer left it behind. the_section_goes_with_the_importer covers both ends.
  2. The 16 MiB bound is intended. 13818-1 caps PCR spacing at 100 ms, so at 100 Mbit/s a legal gap is about 1.25 MB and the bound trips only past about 1.3 s.
  3. a_stream_shorter_than_a_sync_run_still_publishes already covered the short stream; objects_after_the_last_pcr_extrapolate_its_rate now pins the timing after the last PCR.

The two P2s from my previous review are fixed: probing covers the buffered grid and short EOF, and an unrelated PCR override no longer advertises random access. The catalog-drop guard and EOF extrapolation regression also address the later lifecycle/timing feedback.

One P2 remains:

  • rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/passthrough.rs:457–458: preserve the discontinuity when the same packet is also a random-access point. With PCR on the video PID, a forward splice carrying both flags first returns Start::Discontinuity from clock(), then overwrites it with RandomAccess here. Consequently write() skips media.discontinuity() (lines 599–602): the new group advances by one sequence rather than two, and its timestamp closes the previous group's timeline across the jump. Keep the break and random-access properties independently so this remains a decodable group with a break marker. Extend a_flagged_jump_forward_starts_a_group_behind_a_break with both flags on its splice packet and assert the +2 sequence gap; its current fixture explicitly excludes random access at the break.

Direction: reusing container::Producer, refusing every PCR rewind, and keeping export in its separate quest fit the intended scope. The rebase now retains the MSFTS changes under quest/m3.

Verification: GitHub source/test inspection, including direct comparison with the previously reviewed file to separate rebase drift; no Rust or relay tests run by this review. Current-head Check/Test and platform jobs are still running. COMMENT only.

Track queued bytes incrementally instead of summing the queue on every packet.

On every packet, packet() sums payload.len() across the whole queue. Objects queue only until the next PCR, so the queue is usually short. During a long PCR gap, though, the queue can approach GROUP_BYTES_MAX. Each packet then walks every queued object, which makes the cost quadratic in the gap length. Keep a running queued_bytes counter. Increase it in close_object, and decrease it in drain_queue.

The remaining P2 from my previous review is fixed. passthrough.rs:452–477 preserves the break independently of Start::RandomAccess, and lines 610–615 emit media.discontinuity() without downgrading a genuinely random-access group. The updated regression covers both splice flag combinations, checking byte identity, timestamp continuity, the +2 sequence gap, and the catalog flag.

No new actionable findings in this update; none of my prior P2s remain open. The separate break/access properties are the right direction for the import-only scope. The other changes since the previous reviewed commit come from merging current main, rather than new passthrough changes.

- Around line 757-768: Update remap to permanently clear all_random_access when
a group has already started under a non-single layout, and update write to clear
it when starting a group while self.single is false. Keep this loss permanent so
later layout changes cannot make record publish random_access as true again.

Pushed on top of t0ms's commit, merged with current main:

  • 4ca4bebd6: a splice packet that is both a flagged PCR jump and a random access point now keeps the break. The object carries the break separately from why its group starts, so write() still calls discontinuity() (+2 sequence) and the group still counts as random access. a_flagged_jump_forward_starts_a_group_behind_a_break runs with and without random_access_indicator on the splice; the RAI case failed before the fix (+1).
  • dc1ca074c: CodeRabbit's layout finding. A group carried while the layout allows no random access clears randomAccess for good, so going back to one program can't reclaim it. Covered by random_access_lost_to_a_second_program_stays_lost; the draft's rule says the same.

CodeRabbit's queue-sum nitpick (packet() summing queue on every packet): leaving it as is. Between PCRs, the queue only grows at random access points that aren't on a PCR packet, and every PCR drains it, so it holds a handful of objects. A running counter would add state that has to stay in sync for no measurable gain.

Description corrections: quest/m1/ts-passthrough.md and ts-restart.md are gone, so the Problem paragraph and the TS passthrough follow-up bullet are stale. A flagged rewind is a fatal PcrRestartError, with no in-process restart.

Updated the PR description: the Problem and Follow-ups no longer point at the deleted ts-passthrough.md / ts-restart.md quests, the rewind bullet records the 2026-10-08 decision (an importer never restarts in-process), and the two review fixes (4ca4bebd6, dc1ca074c) are in Approach and Validation. Merging at the maintainer's direction, pinned to 49665756, with CI green. Thanks @t0ms!
