Builds on #5002, which makes a timed-out subscribe leave nothing behind, so a retry doesn't pile up streams or stale entries.

Problem

@moq/watch treats every NetError.Stream as the end of a track, and nothing reruns the subscribing effect while the broadcast handle stays open. So the element goes blank for good, even though the connection is up and the broadcast is still announced. Two cases hit this:

  • Setup timeout. A SUBSCRIBE that gets no answer within @moq/net's 10 s setup deadline closes with StreamCode.ControlTimeout. This was seen after a relay restart with several <moq-watch> elements on one page: some stayed blank until the page was reloaded.
  • Upstream reset on an open handle. A publisher restarts (crash, SIGKILL, lost link) before the relay has noticed its old session is gone. Its new session announces the same path, so @moq/net logs rerouted and keeps the same handle. When the relay drops the old session, it resets every track that session served with code 0 (Internal), or SessionClosed for a clean close. Without a publisher epoch (lite-06, or an un-epoched publisher), nothing swaps the handle.

Media tracks (video, audio, captions, through subscribeMedia) and the catalog track (Broadcast's catalog subscription) both fail this way. If the catalog fails, no media track is ever subscribed.

Approach

  • A shared internal helper, resubscribe(effect, subscriber, track), reruns the caller's effect when the subscriber closes for a reason that says nothing about the track. The rerun subscribes again. Both subscribeMedia and the catalog subscription use it.
    • Local setup timeout: ControlTimeout whose cause is the timer's TimeoutError. Retried at once: each attempt already waited out the 10 s deadline. A peer's reset with code 0x31 decodes to the same code with the transport error as its cause, so it still ends the track.
    • Internal or SessionClosed from the peer: retried after a fixed 1 s, so a relay that keeps resetting can't make it spin.
  • Every other reset (Cancel, NotFound, Unroutable, MalformedTrack, application codes) and a clean finish still end the track. A retry is logged with console.warn.
  • Tests:
    • media.test.ts (fake timers): a local setup timeout re-subscribes at once, Internal and SessionClosed after the delay. A peer's ControlTimeout reset, Unroutable, Cancel and NotFound stay ended.
    • broadcast.test.ts:
      • A catalog track that timed out is subscribed again and goes live.
      • A catalog reset with Internal on a handle that stays open is subscribed again after the delay and goes live, on the same handle.
      • After an unannounce and re-announce, the watch Broadcast hands over a new handle and a subscribeMedia caller subscribes on it.
    • lite/subscriber.test.ts: through the real withTimeout path with fake timers, the setup timeout closes the track with ControlTimeout caused by a TimeoutError. This is the contract @moq/watch relies on.

Impact

  • No public API change: the helpers are internal.
  • No wire change.
  • Behaviour: a media or catalog track whose setup timed out, or that a relay reset with Internal or SessionClosed, is now subscribed again. Before, it stayed dead.

Alternatives

  • Telling a local timeout from a peer reset. @moq/watch checks cause.name === "TimeoutError", the same convention as AbortSignal.timeout(), because TimeoutError isn't exported from @moq/net. A cleaner option is a dedicated exported class for the local deadline (like NotFound), which is a public API decision.
  • Which codes retry. This is an allowlist.
    • Retrying every reset except deliberate endings, with exponential backoff, was considered. The backoff state would have to live outside the effect in every subscribeMedia caller. That's a lot of extra code for what one fixed delay already bounds.
    • Unroutable stays "over". The relay answers it when the route for the handle's pinned epoch is gone, so retrying on the same handle asks again for the instance it just refused. The relay then ends the announcement, and Origin.request().active swaps to a new handle when the broadcast is announced again, which already reruns the subscribing effect.
  • Relying on epochs (feat(apps): follow a broadcast's announcement as its online signal and log epochs #4970) instead. A restarted publisher that mints a new epoch on lite-07 already gets a new handle. lite-06 is still the default, and an un-epoched route is never resumed through another one, so the upstream reset still needs handling here.

Decisions

Which resets retry on an open handle:

  • ✅ An allowlist with a fixed delay: Internal and SessionClosed after 1 s, plus the local timeout at once.
  • A denylist with backoff: every reset except deliberate endings.
  • No client fix: rely on epochs and promoting lite-07.

Walkthrough

Media subscriptions now retry after selected close reasons: immediately for a ControlTimeout caused by TimeoutError, and after one second for Internal or SessionClosed. Broadcast catalog subscriptions use the same retry helper. Tests cover timeout classification, retry behavior, and broadcast recovery after a replacement broadcast or catalog track.

Bound pending opens before retrying subscriptions.

subscribeMedia retries after subscriber.closed reports ControlTimeout. The timed-out setup rejects the request, but its underlying Stream.open can still be queued. openWithin only discards a stream that opens later; it does not cancel the pending transport open. The timeout cleanup also cannot abort a stream that has not opened yet.

Repeated timeouts can therefore leave stale opens queued and consume stream credit before other subscriptions. Cancel the underlying open on timeout, or prevent a retry while the previous open remains pending by applying a shared bound.

Declining for this PR; it's already listed under Follow-ups.

  • WebTransport has no way to cancel a parked createBidirectionalStream. @moq/net already does what it can: openWithin and the setup-timeout path reset a stream that opens after its deadline, so a late open holds a slot only until it lands and is reset, and the peer then grants that credit back.
  • Growth is bounded by the setup deadline: at most one parked open per track per 10 s while the session is starved, and they drain at once when a slot frees. Without this PR the element stays blank for good, which is the worse outcome.
  • The timeout this PR targets wasn't credit starvation in the case that prompted it: the relay logged the SUBSCRIBE (the stream had opened) and never answered. There the timed-out stream is reset right away and nothing is left parked.
  • Not retrying while the earlier open is still parked would need @moq/net to expose that state (or to pace its own setup on credit), which is a change to @moq/net's subscribe path rather than @moq/watch. Better as its own change.

@Dryvnt Thanks for clarifying. I accept deferring pending-open handling to a separate @moq/net change. The reported failure occurred after the stream opened, so retrying restores playback without leaving a parked open in that case.

The pending-open risk remains under credit starvation, but it is already listed as a follow-up. No further change is requested for this PR.

Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for that follow-up?

Learning: In moq-dev/moq, WebTransport does not expose cancellation for a parked createBidirectionalStream call. In moq/net, openWithin and setup-timeout cleanup reset streams that open after their deadline. Preventing retries while earlier opens remain parked requires pending-open state or credit-aware setup pacing in moq/net, rather than only changes to js/watch/src/media.ts.

Automated review: cf2530d2

The bug is real and the fix is small: a media SUBSCRIBE that hits the 10 s setup deadline currently kills the track for good, and rerunning the caller's effect on ControlTimeout is a reasonable way to recover. CI (Check, Test) is green. A few gaps before this fully covers the reported failure, in severity order.

1. The catalog subscription has the same dead-element failure, and it isn't covered (medium-high)

js/watch/src/broadcast.ts #runCatalog subscribes the catalog track directly, not through subscribeMedia. If that SUBSCRIBE times out, the spawned loop catches the NetError.Stream, logs catalog subscription ended, and the finally sets #raw to undefined and status to "offline". Nothing reruns #runCatalog, since it only depends on enabled, catalogFormat, name, error, out.active and that handle's closed, and none of them change. With no catalog, no media subscription is ever made, so the element stays blank until reload: exactly the symptom in the description. After a relay restart the catalog is the first track every <moq-watch> subscribes, so it is at least as likely to hit the deadline as the media tracks.

Fix: apply the same retry in #runCatalog, for example a retry signal that the effect reads and the catch sets on a setup timeout. Better still, share one helper with subscribeMedia so the two can't drift. A broadcast.test.ts case where the catalog track closes with ControlTimeout and is then served would pin it.

2. Matching on the code alone also retries on peer resets, with no spacing (medium)

media.ts checks closed instanceof NetError.Stream && closed.code === StreamCode.ControlTimeout. That isn't specific to the local setup timer:

  • 0x31 is a registered wire code. fromTransport in js/net/src/error.ts decodes a peer's stream reset with that code into the same Stream(ControlTimeout), and the Rust relay forwards it verbatim across a hop (rs/moq-net/src/error.rs, relaying_a_code_does_not_change_registries pins 0x31). So "no peer sends it" depends on every upstream never originating or forwarding it.
  • The effect watches subscriber.closed for the subscription's whole life, not only before the first response. A reset with that code mid-stream (after groups have flowed) retries too, which contradicts the new doc comment ("times out before its first response").

When the code comes from a peer, the 10 s spacing the PR relies on doesn't exist: a peer that answers every SUBSCRIBE with an immediate 0x31 reset turns this into a hot resubscribe loop, with one console.warn and one new TRACK and SUBSCRIBE stream per iteration.

Fix: retry only on the locally raised timeout. controlTimeout(err) in js/net/src/error.ts sets cause to the TimeoutError, so closed.cause instanceof TimeoutError (or a dedicated exported subclass, like NotFound) tells the two apart. Alternatively, add a small floor delay with backoff so no code path can spin.

3. Each retry repeats a setup leak under the browser stream cap (medium-low, mostly pre-existing)

The timeout's own message names the browser stream limit as the usual cause. In js/net/src/lite/subscriber.ts #runSubscribe, when withTimeout fires, the catch deletes #subscribes[id] and only arranges to abort state.stream once setup settles. If the timer fired while #openSubscribe was still waiting on #trackInfo or Stream.open, setup keeps going afterwards: it calls request.accept(...) on the already-rejected request, then this.#subscribes.set(id, entry), and nothing deletes that entry again. Please confirm, because it doesn't happen if accept throws on a rejected request. Separately, the TRACK and SUBSCRIBE opens stay queued behind the cap until slots free up (the PR notes this as a follow-up).

Before this PR that happened once per dead track. Now it happens every 10 s per track for as long as the cap holds, and the queued opens all land together when slots free, then get aborted. A retry cap or backoff here, or aborting the pending setup in @moq/net on timeout, keeps the retries from adding to the pressure that caused them.

4. The tests can't tell a local timeout from a peer reset (low)

media.test.ts injects the failure with failing.close(new Moq.Error.Stream(Moq.StreamCode[code])). That is the same shape a peer reset produces, so the tests would keep passing whichever way finding 2 is resolved. Once the check is narrowed, add a case where 0x31 arrives as a peer reset (no TimeoutError cause) and does not retry immediately. Ideally also cover the real withTimeout path with a fake timer.

Verdict: ITERATE

The direction is right and the media-side change is small. Covering the catalog (1) and limiting retries to the local timer or adding a delay (2) would make this the complete fix for the reported blank elements. Findings 3 and 4 can follow.

Addressed in f75e64a5:

  1. Catalog: fixed. The media retry is now a shared internal helper, resubscribeOnTimeout, which the catalog subscription in Broadcast also uses, so the two can't drift. broadcast.test.ts covers it: the catalog track closes with the local timeout, is then served, and the broadcast goes live.
  2. Peer 0x31: fixed. A retry now needs ControlTimeout whose cause is the setup timer's TimeoutError. A peer's reset with the same code (cause: the transport error) ends the track as before, so it can't hot-loop. The local timeout only fires before the first response, so a mid-stream reset doesn't retry either. TimeoutError isn't exported from @moq/net, so the check uses cause.name. Exporting a dedicated class instead is listed under Alternatives as an API decision.
  3. #subscribes leak: confirmed, not fixed here. With a fake session, a deadline that fires while TRACK_INFO is pending leaves the entry behind once TRACK_INFO arrives. A deadline that fires while the SUBSCRIBE stream is opening does not. It's a @moq/net bug, so it's listed as a follow-up rather than mixed into this @moq/watch fix. Queued opens are tracked in quest: plan JS requests waiting for a stream slot without timing out #5001.
  4. Tests: added. media.test.ts has a peer ControlTimeout reset that stays ended. lite/subscriber.test.ts drives the real withTimeout path with fake timers and pins that the track closes with ControlTimeout caused by a TimeoutError.

Merge summary

  • @moq/watch: the shared resubscribe helper reruns the media and catalog subscriptions after a local setup timeout (at once), or after a peer reset with Internal or SessionClosed (after 1 s). That second case covers a publisher that restarts onto the same broadcast handle. Every other reset still ends the track.
  • @moq/net: at the setup deadline, a subscribe still waiting on TRACK_INFO resets that stream and stops setup, so retries no longer pile up stream slots or stale entries.

Decisions: an allowlist with a fixed delay rather than backoff, and fixing the TRACK_INFO leak in this PR. Both are in the description. The follow-ups stay listed there, with no new quests; stream-slot pacing is in #5001 and lite-07 promotion in #4970.

Reviewed commit: 225698c

One integration gap: preserve the post-open cancellation guard already fixed and tested in #5002. Here js/net/src/lite/subscriber.ts:686–688 still writes SUBSCRIBE unconditionally after Stream.open. If TRACK_INFO arrives at 5 s and the SUBSCRIBE open resumes just after the 10 s setup deadline, this abandoned attempt sends a stale request before late cleanup, while watch may already be retrying. Check the deadline signal immediately after that open, and retain #5002's parked-SUBSCRIBE/no-writes regression when reconciling these overlapping changes. This confirms the related finding in #5002 (comment) rather than duplicating it inline.

Direction: the shared catalog/media recovery path, local-timeout discrimination, and delayed reset allowlist are coherent. Current TRACK_INFO cancellation addresses the earlier leak; uncancellable parked-open queue growth is the explicitly deferred #5001 limitation. Retry is compatibility recovery, not a substitute for publisher epoch/identity correctness.

Verification: all six changed files, Effect teardown/rerun behavior, stream setup/cleanup, tests and discussion inspected via GitHub; no local tests or real-browser restart/stream-pressure exercise run. Returned exact-head Check, Release JS, and Audio quality runs succeeded.

Dropped the @moq/net commit (225698c) and moved this back to draft until #5002 merges.

#5002 fixes the same TRACK_INFO setup leak, more completely: it also stops a SUBSCRIBE stream that opens after the deadline from sending its request (the gap the last review found here), and it covers lite-05 through -07. The leak exists without this PR, so it lands on its own, and this PR stays a @moq/watch change. The retry here is only safe on top of that fix, so this PR waits for it and then gets rebased onto main.

…dcast

A publisher that restarts before the relay drops its old session reroutes
the same broadcast handle; the relay then resets every track the old
session served with Internal (or SessionClosed). Nothing reruns the
subscribing effect, so the catalog and media stay dead. Retry those two
codes after a fixed 1 s delay through the same helper as the setup timeout.

Thanks for the thorough investigation. Rather than resubscribing on errors in @moq/watch, #5013 plans fixes at the source: a setup timeout stays fatal and requests fail fast without stream credit, and a better route without an epoch takes over with a re-announce, so a restarted lite-06 publisher reaches viewers through announcements. Players recover on announcements, not subscription errors (see #4970).
