Problem

A media playlist's EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE is the reference rendition's record number. The exporter re-picked that reference on every catalog update: the first video rendition by name, or the first audio rendition when there was no video. Adding a rendition that sorts earlier switched the reference, cleared the window, and rewound the sequence to the new rendition's own records. RFC 8216 §6.2.2 says the tag must not decrease. Players reloading the same media.m3u8 then stall, and the new URLs name different content under the old sequence numbers.

Approach

Keep the current reference while it is still a catalog rendition with a timeline. A newer, earlier-named rendition no longer takes over, so repeated playlist reloads keep a non-decreasing sequence and the same segment URLs. A reference that leaves the catalog still falls back to the first remaining rendition, which can rewind; that case is unchanged.

Impact

  • No public API change. Broadcaster and the playlist renderer are unchanged.
  • No MoQ wire change. The hang draft's derived-format note now says an edge keeps its reference while that rendition stays in the catalog.
  • HLS: EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE no longer rewinds when an earlier-named rendition appears, and segment URLs keep the original reference tag.

Alternatives

Number the new reference's segments from past the last listed one. That stays monotonic even when the reference leaves, but an edge that starts after the switch numbers differently, so edges disagree on the media sequence. Keeping the reference leaves the segment number equal to that rendition's record sequence.

Follow-ups

  • A reference that leaves the catalog can still rewind EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE. Measure whether that happens before offsetting the replacement. Recommendation: /quest-plan that only if a reference actually leaves in practice.
  • A late-joining edge sees the current catalog snapshot and latches the first rendition by name at join time, while an edge already serving sticks with the older one. The URL tag keeps those from naming the same path with different bytes, but the media sequences differ. Recommendation: leave this unless cross-edge failover after a mid-stream rendition add shows up. Recording the latched reference in the catalog would be a wire change.

(Written by Grok 4.7)

Decisions

  • ✅ (maintainer 2026-10-07) Sticky reference, as the quest recommended, rather than offsetting the numbering at a switch.
  • ✅ (maintainer 2026-10-07) An audio reference yields to video: the reference stays only while it is video, or while no video rendition has a timeline. Audio switches to video when a video rendition has a timeline, under a new tag, which rewinds the sequence as a reference that leaves does. Video listed before its timeline exists does not take over yet. Rejected: offsetting the new numbering (edges joining later disagree) and keeping audio (video segments cut on audio records are mostly gaps). Options were in this reply. The hang draft and doc/bin/hls.md say so.

Outcome

The HLS exporter keeps its reference rendition while that rendition stays in the catalog with a timeline. Adding an earlier-named rendition no longer clears the window, so EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE stays non-decreasing and segment URLs keep the original reference tag.

A reference that leaves the catalog still falls back to the first remaining rendition and can rewind. That case is unchanged.

Testing

an_earlier_rendition_does_not_rewind_the_media_sequence failed with the sticky check disabled: the sequence went from 2 to 0 and the playlist switched to the new rendition's tag. With the fix, just rs check-test -p moq-hls passed (128 tests). just drafts check and remark on doc/bin/hls.md passed. A full just check in this worktree stopped in biome on nested configs under an untracked .worktrees/ directory owned by other agents; that directory is not part of the branch.

Decisions

  • Sticky reference, as the quest recommended. Offsetting at a switch would stay monotonic when the reference leaves, and edges that join after the switch would number differently.
  • Late-joining edges latch the first rendition by name in the snapshot they see. URL tags keep those paths from sharing bytes. Recording the latched reference in the catalog would be a wire change. Recommendation: leave it.

Follow-ups

  • /quest-plan an offset for a reference that leaves, only if that happens in practice.
  • Leave late-joiner numbering alone unless cross-edge failover after a mid-stream rendition add shows up.

Left as a draft.

Walkthrough

The HLS exporter retains a video reference while it remains available in the catalog and has a timeline. An audio reference switches to indexed video when video becomes available. Tests cover reference changes, playlist numbering, and segment URLs across reloads. The HLS documentation and archive materials describe or reflect these rules.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to dac9c

Cross-server failover after a new rendition appears may interrupt playback until the client reloads the playlist. This known, conditional behavior is mergeable with owner awareness.

Reviewed commit: 0cf54bf

No actionable new defect found. Direction: the narrow sticky-reference fix is sound. rs/moq-hls/src/export/mod.rs:404-416 preserves the current kind/name only while it remains listed and indexed, preventing an earlier-named addition from clearing the existing numbering. The added reload test checks both sequence monotonicity and unchanged bytes under the old URL.

This is not a general monotonicity guarantee: reference removal and edges joining different catalog snapshots remain the explicitly documented limitations. Preserve those caveats when integrating with #4978 rather than describing all edges as agreeing unconditionally.

Verification: complete diff, reference-selection context, tests and discussion reviewed; no local tests run. Check, Test, Windows, macOS and Quest succeeded for this head. GitHub currently reports merge conflicts; the eventual conflict resolution is not covered by this review.

Grok review of 44e8be07 (full review, no earlier Grok review on this PR)

The sticky check in reference() is small and does what it says: an earlier-named rendition no longer clears the window, and the new reload test fails without it. One behavior change isn't covered by the PR description, though.

Blocking

  1. An audio reference now sticks after video shows up (rs/moq-hls/src/export/mod.rs:407-416). The early return keeps current whatever its kind. If the first catalog snapshot with an indexed timeline has only audio (for example, audio's config and timeline enroll before the video encoder emits its first keyframe), the edge latches audio. When video joins a moment later, it stays a non-reference rendition for the life of the broadcast. Its segment boundaries then come from audio records, and per doc/bin/hls.md each one snaps to a keyframe within about a second or renders as EXT-X-GAP. With GOPs that don't line up with the audio record cuts, the video playlist fills with gaps or uneven segments, which is exactly what the "prefer video" rule was there to avoid. An edge that joins after video appears picks video, so two edges disagree on segment boundaries, not just on numbering (the PR's second follow-up only mentions the media sequence).
Suggested fix: keep current only when it's video, or when no video rendition has a timeline yet. That way an audio-to-video upgrade still switches once (rewinding as it did on main, under a new tag), and the video-to-video case this PR targets stays sticky. A unit test on reference() covering audio-then-video, the earlier-named video case, and a reference that leaves would pin all three without the full harness.

Non-blocking

  1. The draft text locks in the audio case (drafts/draft-lcurley-moq-hang.md:773). "Keeps it while that rendition stays in the catalog" reads as normative for an audio reference too. If you take fix 1, word it as "keeps a video reference while it stays; an audio reference yields to the first video rendition with a timeline."
  2. No direct test for the fallback. The doc comment says a reference that leaves falls back to the first choice. Only a_reference_switch_never_reuses_a_segment_url covers a switch, and it calls watch_timeline by hand rather than going through reference(&catalog, Some(..)), so the fallback branch itself isn't exercised.

CI (Check, Test, Windows, macOS, Quest) is still queued on this head. GitHub reports it mergeable now, and the merge notes already cover the Timelines conflict once #4978 lands.

Verdict: ITERATE. Fix 1 is a few lines; the rest is optional.

Reviewed commit: 44e8be0

The update makes the media-sequence regression use paused time and tolerate additional Config fields (rs/moq-hls/src/export/mod.rs:3057, 3086–3090); it does not change reference selection.

I independently confirmed the existing audio-first reference finding: reference() at :407–416 returns a still-listed audio reference before considering newly indexed video at :418–423. If audio enrolls first, video remains aligned to audio record cuts for the broadcast lifetime; with GOP boundaries outside the snapping tolerance, its segments become gaps. This qualifies my earlier favorable assessment of the narrow same-kind addition fix. Add an audio-first → video regression and choose an upgrade policy that also preserves sequence monotonicity, rather than restoring a rewind. No duplicate inline thread.

Direction: iterate on that existing correctness concern. The same-kind earlier-name fix and explicit reference-removal/cross-edge limitations otherwise remain as reviewed.

Verification: GitHub-only static delta, reference/catalog-watcher context, HLS boundary documentation and discussion; no tests or player playback run. Main updates accounted for; open state, exact head and prior reviews rechecked.

Replies to the Grok review and the OpenAI review of 44e8be07:

  1. An audio reference sticks after video shows up: confirmed, left for the maintainer. The reviewers disagree on the fix: Grok suggests switching once from audio to video, and OpenAI asks for a policy that never rewinds. Options:

    • A. Keep current only while it is video, or while no video rendition has a timeline. Audio upgrades to video once, under a new tag, and that one switch rewinds EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE as it does on main. Edges then agree on boundaries once video exists. About five lines plus an audio-then-video test.
    • B. Upgrade to video but number its segments from past the last one listed. The sequence never rewinds, but an edge that joins after the upgrade numbers differently. The quest rejected this as "offset at the switch".
    • C. Keep this PR's behavior. Video stays aligned to audio record cuts for the whole broadcast, so most of its segments become gaps when GOPs don't line up with those cuts.

Recommendation: A. The upgrade happens at most once, usually within the first second, while the encoder's first keyframe lands, and the new tag keeps old URLs from naming new bytes. The draft wording (finding 2) follows from whichever option is chosen.

  2. Draft wording: waits on finding 1.

  3. No direct test for the fallback: fixed in 6e0e637b. the_reference_sticks_until_it_leaves calls reference() directly. An earlier-named video does not take over, and a reference that leaves falls back to the first choice.

Grok follow-up review of 6e0e637b (re-review after a push; last Grok review was on 44e8be07)

This push is test-only: the_reference_sticks_until_it_leaves in rs/moq-hls/src/export/mod.rs calls reference() directly. The renditions are a BTreeMap, so the fallback to "a" is deterministic and the test isn't flaky. No production code changed.

Earlier findings

  • 3. No direct test for the fallback: fixed. The new test covers the first pick, an earlier-named video not taking over, and a reference that leaves falling back to the first remaining video.
  • 1. An audio reference sticks after video shows up: still open (blocking). reference() lines 407-416 are unchanged, and the reply leaves the choice to the maintainer. Of the three options listed, A is the one that avoids the real damage: under C, video segments stay cut on audio record boundaries for the whole broadcast, which means gaps whenever GOPs don't line up, and edges that join after video appears disagree on boundaries, not just numbering. B fixes the rewind but brings back the cross-edge numbering split the quest rejected. A costs one rewind, under a new tag, at most once per broadcast, usually within the first second. When you add it, extend this test with an audio-only catalog followed by audio plus video, so the one-time upgrade is pinned next to the sticky video case.
  • 2. Draft wording (drafts/draft-lcurley-moq-hang.md:773): still open, and it follows from finding 1.

Non-blocking

  • The test doesn't cover a reference that stays listed but loses its timeline (listed && !indexed). It's one more assert, for example dropping "b" from archive(...) while keeping it in the renditions.

CI (Check, Test, Windows, macOS) is still pending on this head.

Verdict: ITERATE. Only finding 1 blocks; take option A and update the draft text to match.

Keeping an audio reference after video appeared cut every video segment on
audio records, so most became gaps. A video reference still sticks; an audio
one switches to video once, which rewinds the media sequence as a reference
that leaves does.

Grok follow-up review of 777bed15 (re-review after a push; last Grok review was on 6e0e637b)

This push takes option A: in reference() (rs/moq-hls/src/export/mod.rs:405-432), an audio current is kept only while no video rendition has a timeline, and a video current still sticks. The logic is right. video is computed once before the early return and reused for the fallback, so the switch lands on the first indexed video by name, the same pick a freshly joining edge makes. The caller at line 367 already handles a changed reference: it aborts the old watcher, calls skip(), and starts a new one under the new tag.

Earlier findings

  • 1. An audio reference sticks after video shows up: fixed. The test now covers audio-only, then an earlier-named audio not taking over, then video arriving and taking over.
  • 2. Draft wording (drafts/draft-lcurley-moq-hang.md:773): fixed, along with the changelog entry and doc/bin/hls.md.
  • 3. No direct test for the fallback: fixed in the previous push.

Non-blocking

  • The common startup case isn't pinned. The race behind finding 1 was a video rendition listed in the catalog before its timeline exists. In that window video is None, so audio should stay. One more assert would pin it: video "v" in renditions but left out of archive(...), expecting audio("b"). The same pattern covers the listed && !indexed video case from the last review.
  • "Switches once" is only true while video stays. If the only indexed video later leaves or loses its timeline, the fallback goes back to audio and rewinds again, then again when video returns. That's consistent with the "a reference that leaves" rule, but the docs (doc/bin/hls.md, the module doc, and the draft) say "once". Something like "switches to video when a video rendition appears" would avoid overstating it.

CI: Windows and macOS are still pending on this head.

Verdict: MERGE once CI is green. Both notes are optional.

Grok follow-up on 777bed15, both addressed in 65c68674:

  • The startup case is pinned: a video listed before its timeline exists leaves the audio reference in place.
  • The docs no longer say "once": audio switches to video when a video rendition with a timeline appears, and a reference that leaves can switch back, as documented.

Share the reference choice across broadcaster instances.

Server::broadcaster caches a Broadcaster only inside one Server. If two edges serve the same public URL, each edge can construct its own instance. One instance can retain video0 after an earlier-sorting videoA appears, while a later instance selects videoA as its initial reference. Reloading the same media playlist can then change EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE and segment URL tags. A segment URL from one edge can also return 404 on the other edge.

Store the selected reference at the broadcast or generation level and initialize every Broadcaster from that shared choice. Update that shared choice only when the current reference leaves or becomes invalid. A new reference must use a new playlist or an explicit discontinuity mapping, as required for a new sequence namespace.

On the outside-diff finding (share the reference choice across Broadcaster instances): declining for this PR.

Edges joining at different catalog snapshots can pick different references. The PR description already lists this as a follow-up. Sharing the choice across edges means either recording the latched reference in the catalog, which is a wire change, or coordinating between edges, which conflicts with the rule that relays never block on peers. The URL tag already keeps one edge's segment URLs from naming another edge's bytes. A player that fails over between edges after a mid-stream rendition add may see a different EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE. If that shows up in practice, the follow-up is to record the reference in the catalog.

Reviewed commit: 5dbcc74

No new actionable bugs found since my review of 44e8be0, accounting for the merged main changes.

The prior audio-first reference finding is fixed: rs/moq-hls/src/export/mod.rs:441–455 now retains audio only while no indexed video exists. The direct test at :3261–3294 covers sticky video, removal fallback, sticky audio, video listed before its timeline, and the indexed-video upgrade. The Timelines merge resolution at :2953–2958 preserves both the archive snapshot and the updated reference() call.

Direction: this implements the chosen narrow policy without adding numbering offsets or cross-edge coordination. Audio-to-video upgrades and reference loss can still rewind; the existing cross-edge finding remains an explicitly deferred limitation, not a new finding or a general monotonicity guarantee.

Verification: GitHub-only static review of the complete PR diff, relevant watcher/fanout/window code, tests and discussion. No tests or player playback run. Check and Platform are still in progress for this head. Open state, exact head and reviews rechecked immediately before posting.

Merge summary for 5dbcc745:

  • A video reference sticks while it stays listed with a timeline, so an earlier-named rendition no longer rewinds EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE. An audio reference yields once video has a timeline. A reference that leaves falls back.
  • ✅ Decisions (maintainer 2026-10-07): a sticky reference, and audio yields to video (option A).
  • Merged main after feat(hls)!: bounded playlists: capped window, sync-point gating, explicit replay mode #4978 landed and resolved the Timelines harness and draft changelog conflicts. The OpenAI review of 5dbcc745 found nothing new. The CodeRabbit cross-edge finding is deferred, as noted above.
