Completes quest/m0/broadcast-epoch/gateways.md.

Summary

RTMP, SRT, and WHIP ingest now publish each incoming connection under a freshly minted epoch. Before this, every connection announced a route with no epoch. If an encoder reconnected under the same key while its stale connection was still open, the subscriptions already in flight stayed pinned to the stale broadcast and stalled.

  • moq-rtmp: the server's per-publish Publisher and the dial-side pull Publisher each mint an epoch.
  • moq-srt: ts::Publisher mints one for a single-program ingest. Program::All already mints one per program through moq_mux::ts::Programs.
  • moq-rtc: whip::accept mints one per offer. It creates the broadcast hidden up front (so an out-of-scope offer is refused before any mux work) and announces it only after the offer is accepted, so a failed offer leaves a live session's broadcast alone.
  • The epoch now appears in the existing "publish accepted" log lines, and WHIP gets a new whip publish accepted line.
  • The relay doesn't embed the gateways; the moq CLI listeners call into these crates, so the CLI and embedders both pick this up.
  • Docs: doc/bin/{rtmp,srt,rtc}.md and doc/bin/relay/cluster.md now say each connection is its own epoch.
  • Deletes the finished quest and its references.

Tests

One regression test per gateway. Each opens a second connection on the same path while the first is still open, checks that the stale viewer's subscription ends with Unroutable right away, and checks that a new request reaches the new broadcast. All three stall without the fix (RTMP hit its 5 s bound; SRT and WHIP hung until nextest's TIMEOUT before bounds were added).

  • moq-rtmp server::tests::a_reconnect_replaces_the_stale_publish: two real RTMP client connections over loopback.
  • moq-srt ts::tests::a_reconnect_replaces_the_stale_connection: two ts::Publishers, with time mocked.
  • moq-rtc server::whip::tests::a_reconnect_replaces_the_stale_session: two whip::accept calls with real str0m offers.

just check passes. The only warning is a clippy let_unit_value already on main in rs/moq-cli/src/play/media.rs, which this PR doesn't touch.

Public API and wire impact

  • Public API: none. The new fields are private. The whip::accept doc now says it announces under a fresh epoch.
  • Wire: none. The epoch rides the existing moq-lite 07 field from feat(net)!: carry publisher epochs on routes #4942. On lite-06 and moq-transport links, a reconnect shows up as an end followed by a start at the same path.

Notes

  • The gateway mints the epoch itself; callers can't supply one. That matches "keep it private until a consumer needs it." A redundant pair of gateways ingesting the same encoder would need a shared epoch. That would be a with_epoch on the publish request and is left for when someone needs it.

Suggested follow-ups

  • None needed for this line. TS restart already covers a signalled restart inside one SRT connection.
  • Restart (planned in quest: plan Restart, Rust untimed default, and three follow-ups #5012) makes subscriptions sticky and announces a Restart instead of ending stale subscriptions with Unroutable. The per-connection epoch here is what it needs for one-round-trip recovery; it already plans to flip these three tests, and the Unroutable wording in doc/bin/{rtmp,srt}.md and doc/bin/relay/cluster.md changes with it.

RTMP, SRT, and WHIP ingest publish each incoming connection (and each
RTMP pull) under a freshly minted epoch, so an encoder that reconnects
under the same key while its stale connection lingers replaces the old
broadcast at once instead of being resumed into it. The epoch is logged
with each accepted publish.

Outcome: the quest is complete and the PR stays a draft. RTMP (push and pull), SRT, and WHIP ingest each mint an epoch per connection. Each has a regression test showing a reconnect under the same key, with the stale connection still open, ends the stale viewers with Unroutable instead of stalling them. All three tests stall without the fix. just check passes.

Open note, no decision needed now: callers can't supply the epoch; the gateway mints it. Recommend keeping it that way until a redundant-ingest consumer needs a shared epoch.

Grok review of #4962 at ab5b6bc5 (first review; the head is 6ad9e274 plus an origin/main merge)

This mints a fresh epoch per RTMP push and pull, per single-program SRT connection, and per WHIP offer, so a reconnect supersedes the stale connection's broadcast instead of leaving viewers pinned to it. The change is small and matches how pick treats a newer epoch (Superseded ends the stale fronts with Unroutable). The three regression tests each exercise the real reconnect-while-stale case. publish is exactly create_broadcast plus announce, so the WHIP switch from the two-step form changes nothing else. The /concept/moq-lite#publisher-epochs doc links resolve.

Non-blocking

  1. A WHIP offer that fails negotiation still kicks every viewer of the live session (rs/moq-rtc/src/server/whip.rs:126-148). The new epoch is announced at line 127, before IngestSink::new (133), server.mux() (138), and accept_offer (148), and any of those can return Err. When one does, the producer drops and its route goes away, but by then every front on the healthy session's older epoch has already been superseded and ended with Unroutable. Viewers re-request and land back on the old session, so it's a blip rather than a stall. Still, a retry with a bad or unsupported offer (or, on the bundled unauthenticated router, anyone's POST to the path) now disconnects the audience, and before this PR it didn't. The fix is cheap: create_broadcast at line 127 (it stays hidden), then handle.announce(Route::default().with_epoch(epoch.clone()))? just before register_session. That still announces before the SDP answer goes back, so the 404-gap protection stays. A unit test could post a parseable offer that accept_offer rejects and assert the existing catalog subscription keeps going.
  2. The same thing happens, more narrowly, in SRT and RTMP. ts::Publisher::new (rs/moq-srt/src/ts.rs:82) announces before the PAT arrives, so a second connection on the same stream id carrying a multi-program feed with no --program supersedes the live feed and is then refused. RTMP announces in Publisher::new (server.rs:1399) before accept_request (645), which can also fail. Both are rarer than the WHIP case, and the RTMP order is deliberate (reserve the path before telling the client yes), so documenting this is fine. If you fix WHIP, though, the same create-then-announce-on-commit split would work for SRT Program::One/None at the first PMT.
  3. "Replaces it at once" assumes the two gateways' clocks agree (doc/bin/relay/cluster.md:41-43, and likewise rtmp.md, srt.md, rtc.md). Epochs are UUIDv7 and the newest wins. If an encoder reconnects through a load balancer to a different gateway whose wall clock lags the old one by more than the reconnect gap, the fresh epoch sorts older: the stale route keeps winning, and the fresh push stays invisible until the stale connection dies. With NTP that's milliseconds against reconnect gaps of seconds, so it's low risk. It's still worth one clause in cluster.md, since that page is about multi-node setups.

No correctness issues in the diff itself. CI was still running (Check, Test, macOS, and Windows pending; Quest passed) when this was written.

Verdict: MERGE once CI is green. Finding 1 is worth folding in first if it's quick.

Walkthrough

WHIP offers, RTMP pulls and publishes, and default or single-program SRT ingests now publish broadcasts under fresh epochs. Reconnect tests check that stale broadcasts become unroutable and new requests reach distinct broadcasts. The documentation describes this behavior. The broadcast-epoch gateway requirement and proposal document are removed.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ab5b6

Reconnecting an ingest now replaces a stale broadcast, as intended. However, a WHIP reconnect that fails during offer negotiation can still disconnect viewers of a session that is working. Publish the new epoch only after the offer is accepted, and clarify the docs, before merging.

A failed offer no longer replaces a live session's broadcast. Docs now say a
stale subscription ends with Unroutable and the next subscribe reaches the new
connection, and SRT mints an epoch per broadcast for --program all.

Grok follow-up review of #4962 at 469e67b3 (re-review after the push; the earlier review was on ab5b6bc5)

The push is one commit, 469e67b3: WHIP now publishes the epoch only after accept_offer succeeds, and the RTMP and SRT docs now say a stale subscription ends with Unroutable and the viewer's next subscribe reaches the new connection. There's no base-branch churn in it.

Earlier findings

  1. Fixed: a failed WHIP offer no longer kicks the live session's viewers. publisher.publish(...) now runs after accept_offer (rs/moq-rtc/src/server/whip.rs:135-143) and still before the answer goes back, so the protection against a 404 before the first packet stays. After the publish, only IngestSink::new can still fail, and on a freshly created broadcast that's only the catalog track insert, so the window is effectively gone. The test I suggested (a parseable offer that accept_offer rejects leaves the existing subscription running) wasn't added. It's worth one test, since nothing pins this ordering and a later refactor could move the publish back up.
  2. Still open, and fine as is: SRT (ts::Publisher::new) and RTMP (Publisher::new before accept_request) still announce before they know the connection is good. The new doc wording doesn't mention that a refused second connection still supersedes the live one, but this case is rare.
  3. Still open: doc/bin/relay/cluster.md:41-43 still says "replaces its stale connection at once" without the caveat that it needs the gateways' clocks to roughly agree (epochs are UUIDv7 and the newest wins).

New in this push (non-blocking)

  1. An out-of-scope WHIP POST now gets further before it's refused (whip.rs:124-143). Before, publish ran first, so Unauthorized came back before any mux work. Now an out-of-scope caller on an embedder's scoped origin triggers server.mux(), which lazily binds the UDP socket on first use, registers ICE credentials on the mux, and runs a full SDP negotiation, and only then gets a 401. Nothing leaks, since registration drops on the error path, but it's more unauthenticated work per request than before. The split from the earlier review avoids this: call create_broadcast up front (it does the scope check and stays hidden), then announce with the fresh epoch right after accept_offer. The accept doc comment also still lists Unauthorized as a failure mode, which is still true, just later.

CI was still running when I wrote this (Check, Test, macOS, and Windows pending).

Verdict: MERGE once CI is green. Finding 4 and the missing regression test are quick to fold in if you want them.

Replies to the Grok reviews of ab5b6bc5 and 469e67b3:

  • WHIP ordering (1, 4): d4aa507 creates the broadcast hidden up front, so an out-of-scope offer gets Unauthorized before any mux or SDP work, and announces it under the fresh epoch only after accept_offer succeeds.
  • Regression test for a rejected offer: not added. I wrote one (a fingerprint-less offer that parses but accept_offer rejects), and it also passed with the announce moved back before negotiation. The announce and the drop both happen before the origin driver runs, so they coalesce and the live viewers never see a supersede. Nothing in-process can pin that ordering without a hook into the driver.
  • SRT and RTMP announcing before the connection is known good (2): not changing here. The RTMP order is deliberate, and the SRT case needs a refused multi-program feed on a live stream id.
  • Clock skew (3): 1655a28 adds a clause to doc/bin/relay/cluster.md that a reconnect to a different gateway assumes the gateways' clocks roughly agree.

Grok follow-up review of #4962 at 1655a282 (re-review after the push; the previous review was on 469e67b3)

The push is two commits with no base-branch churn. d4aa5072 splits WHIP's publish into create_broadcast up front and announce after accept_offer. 1655a282 adds the clock caveat to the relay cluster doc.

Earlier findings

  1. Fixed (finding 4): an out-of-scope WHIP POST is refused before any mux work. create_broadcast (rs/moq-rtc/src/server/whip.rs:124) does the same scope check publish did (origin.rs:1568), so Unauthorized comes back before server.mux() binds the socket, registers ICE credentials, or negotiates SDP. publish is literally create_broadcast plus announce (origin.rs:1620-1624), so behavior is otherwise unchanged. The hidden entry is filtered out of cursors and requests (advertised && !stale, origin.rs:860), so it doesn't touch the live session's broadcast while negotiation runs. IngestSink::new now inserts the catalog track before the announce, which is the order the announce docs ask for, so a fast subscriber finds the catalog already there. The only thing that can still fail after the announce is Error::Closed from a dropped driver.
  2. Fixed (finding 3): doc/bin/relay/cluster.md:43-44 now says a reconnect to a different gateway assumes the gateways' clocks roughly agree.
  3. Still open: there's still no test that a parseable offer which accept_offer rejects leaves the existing session's subscription running. The ordering is now spread over two calls, which makes it a bit easier for a later refactor to undo it, so one test would still be worthwhile.
  4. Still open, and fine as is: SRT and RTMP still announce before they know the connection is good.

New in this push

No new issues. One tiny nit: the new sentence in cluster.md:44 leaves that source line much longer than the ones around it ("...roughly agree. A route without an epoch, including every"). It's harmless in rendered Markdown.

CI was still running when I wrote this (Check, Test, macOS, and Windows pending).

Verdict: MERGE once CI is green.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: b5b019b

No new actionable defect found. The direction is sound: each RTMP/SRT publisher construction mints its instance epoch, and WHIP creates a hidden, scope-checked broadcast before mux work, then announces only after accept_offer succeeds (rs/moq-rtc/src/server/whip.rs:122–153). The reconnect regressions check stale-subscription Unroutable and a distinct replacement while the old session remains alive. Reviewed changed gateway paths, tests, docs and prior discussion; the earlier WHIP ordering and clock-skew concerns are addressed in this head. Verification limits: static review only; no gateway/network tests run. The previously discussed RTMP/SRT announce-before-media-validation tradeoff remains.

Resolve the doc conflicts by keeping the feature-level pages and carrying
over what main changed underneath them: per-connection ingest epochs and
`--epoch` (#4962, #4969), no random first hop for unnamed publishers,
untimed tracks, the bounded HLS window, disabled renditions, the audio
group duration and Balanced default preset, and the Go pointer timestamp.

Also address the open review notes: scope restart takeover to moq-lite 07
and today's Unroutable behavior, keep `--cluster-tier` covering admitted
LAN peers, qualify the watch buffer as cheap for audio only, and say an
over-budget JSON append is refused before anything is written.
