Problem

The hang stalled flag flaps (#4772, #4776). Its encoder-lag detector in JS and Rust used frame-count hysteresis and cleared on demand loss, so a healthy rendition kept toggling and players kept switching. Pausing a rendition in @moq/publish meanwhile removed it from the catalog entirely: a second, heavier signal for "don't use this rendition".

Approach

One optional enabled boolean on every audio and video rendition, default true and written only when false. enabled: false means no frames are coming, and a consumer must not select the rendition.

  • Wire: enabled replaces stalled. Writers stop writing stalled; readers ignore it, since released publishers still flap it. MSF stops mirroring stalled and does not mirror enabled.
  • Detector deleted: Catalog.Stalled (JS), hang::catalog::stalled (Rust), and every producer hook: the moq-mux video Catalog detector, tick/idle/observe_lag on the H.264/H.265/AV1/VP8/VP9 importers and moq_video::encode::Producer, the FLV and MPEG-TS silence ticks, the moq-rtc Bridge/MediaSink tick, and the moq-video capture timer.
  • @moq/publish: disabling a rendition keeps it in the catalog with its last published config and enabled: false, so a mute (which also releases the capture) is a one-field delta. Re-enabling keeps that entry until the reopened capture resolves a config, so an unmute is one field too. Before a video rendition stops it encodes one black keyframe, so a viewer released before this field shows black instead of a frozen frame. A failed black keyframe does not close the track. Each encoder now has a single catalog writer; jitter/delay estimates feed it through a signal.
  • @moq/watch: video and audio selection drop disabled renditions, including a manual target. With no video rendition selectable the player shows black instead of holding the last picture; a paused or hidden player still holds it. The audio graph outlives the absence as it does for a removed rendition while the broadcast stays enabled. Disabling the broadcast releases the graph, so detach returns resources to baseline and reattach builds a fresh graph.
  • Everything else: hang::catalog::Video::ranked() orders disabled renditions last, so the Rust selectors built on it (moq-transcode, moq-rtc egress, moq-rtmp, FLV export) prefer an enabled one; moq-transcode's inherit_stalled becomes inherit_enabled, and it leaves a disabled source only for an enabled one; moq-hls ignores enabled when deciding whether a rendition changed; moq-ffi MoqVideo.stalled becomes enabled and MoqAudio gains enabled (UniFFI default true); C moq_consume_video_stalled becomes moq_consume_video_enabled; wrapper docs and the regenerated Dart bindings follow.
  • Spec/docs: draft-lcurley-moq-hang replaces the stalled text with an enabled common rendition field (audio and video only) and adds a moq-hang-04 changelog entry (-03 is published and contains stalled). doc/concept/hang.md and the lib docs are updated. The completed quest file is deleted and its references updated. The newly imported relay: a publisher replacing a killed one is sent the old session's subscriptions before it has published, and moq import ts exits with "rendition is not published" #4945 before-first-keyframe regression obligation is preserved in quest/m1/catalog-early-demand.md; that issue remains open until the missing regression is added.

Tests: a disabled audio rendition publishes the same config with enabled: false and restores it on enable; disabling video encodes exactly one black keyframe and keeps the last config after the capture is released; the watch audio decoder deselects a disabled rendition and keeps one AudioContext across disable and enable; video selection moves off and back onto a disabled rendition, never picks a disabled manual target, and selects nothing when all are disabled; a legacy stalled: true changes nothing (Rust serde, JS schema and selection); enabled round-trips and is omitted when true (Rust, JS, ffi, C). The watch video decoder clears its picture once nothing is selectable (fails without the fix). Validation: complete clean-Nix just check passed on cleanup commit d2e2dad24d6e9bc9fe24248c78567f90519397f2, then just check d2e2dad24d6e9bc9fe24248c78567f90519397f2 passed on final integration head ccfa8259738d69ec24fa1a89b595b6b1e4ca57e4 (6,277 default tests, capture/feature suites, bindings and docs). just drafts check passed. The exact final head passes the full just test interop --all matrix: all 32 language pairs and browser refusal.

Browser check: the media QA lane (just test media, run in CI on this PR since it touches test/interop) gains a disable case. The fixture disables its video rendition, the catalog keeps it with enabled: false, the encoder stops, the player's canvas goes black and stays black, and after re-enabling playback resumes with audio/video sync intact. Its first run caught the frozen-frame gap fixed above. As a one-off, the same case was also run against a patched @moq/watch that ignores enabled (a pre-enabled viewer): it passed, so the black keyframe reaches and blanks an old player, and it failed on "disable blanks the picture" once the black keyframe was patched out as well. On final head ccfa8259738d69ec24fa1a89b595b6b1e4ca57e4, the complete just test media recipe passes: the rendition stays in the catalog, video remains black while disabled, and playback resumes with audio/video p95 skew 200 ms. Detach releases every session, audio graph and worker; reattach, republish, late join, capture denial/grant and all four negative controls pass. The AudioContext leak is fixed at the decoder by the existing broadcast enabled signal, with a red/green regression that also preserves the warm graph across rendition absence. Hosted Interop's browser go -> js / python -> js audio cells fail the same way on main (runs 37511624075, 37388778078), so they are not caused by this PR.

Impact

  • Wire (hang catalog): new optional enabled on audio and video renditions; stalled is no longer written and is ignored on read. A viewer that predates enabled keeps selecting a disabled rendition (black keyframe for video, silence for audio); accepted degradation, noted in the draft changelog.
  • Wire (MSF): the non-standard stalled track field is gone.
  • Rust hang: VideoConfig::stalled: Option<bool> replaced by enabled: bool; AudioConfig::enabled: bool added; catalog::stalled module removed; Video::ranked() orders disabled renditions after enabled ones.
  • Rust moq-msf: Track::stalled removed.
  • Rust moq-mux: tick, idle, observe_lag removed from the H.264/H.265/AV1/VP8/VP9 Imports.
  • Rust moq-video: encode::Producer::{tick, idle, observe_lag} removed.
  • Rust moq-rtc: MediaSink::tick and Bridge::tick removed.
  • moq-ffi and wrappers: MoqVideo.stalled renamed to enabled (default true, meaning inverted); MoqAudio.enabled added (default true).
  • C (moq.h): moq_consume_video_stalled renamed to moq_consume_video_enabled, meaning inverted.
  • JS @moq/hang: Catalog.Stalled removed; VideoConfig.stalled replaced by enabled; AudioConfig.enabled added.
  • JS @moq/msf: Track.stalled removed.
  • JS @moq/publish: enabled: false keeps the rendition in the catalog with enabled: false instead of removing it.
  • JS @moq/watch: a disabled rendition is never selected, even by name; with no video rendition selectable the picture clears to black.

Decisions

Confirmed choices:

  1. Draft changelog: ✅ keep the new moq-hang-04 section, since -03 is published and contains stalled. Moving the misplaced -03 entries is a separate follow-up. Main has since opened -04 too (the timeline archive), so the entry now sits beside those.
    • Fold the entry into -03.
  2. moq-ffi audio: ✅ keep enabled on MoqAudio, with no C audio getter until a C consumer needs one.
    • Add moq_consume_audio_enabled now.
    • Leave MoqAudio without enabled.

Alternatives

Follow-ups

  • The draft's moq-hang-03 changelog holds entries that landed after -03 was published (delay, group starts, namespaced keys, and more); they belong under moq-hang-04.
  • Rust consumers that pick renditions without Video::ranked() (moq-cli play, moq-gst, the ffi/C convenience paths, audio selection generally) do not look at enabled yet; native players could skip disabled renditions like @moq/watch.
  • C has no audio enabled getter; add moq_consume_audio_enabled when a C consumer needs it.

Every audio and video rendition carries an optional `enabled` (default
true, written only when false); a disabled rendition has no frames coming
and must not be selected. Writers stop writing `stalled`, readers ignore
it, and the flapping encoder-lag detector is deleted in JS and Rust.

@moq/publish keeps a paused rendition in the catalog with `enabled: false`
and its last config, encoding one black keyframe before disabling video.
@moq/watch deselects disabled renditions. moq-transcode, moq-hls, moq-ffi,
the wrappers, and C (`moq_consume_video_enabled`) follow.

A player whose every rendition is disabled deselected the track but kept presenting the last decoded picture. Clear it, as going offline already does; a paused or hidden player still holds its frame.

The media lane mutes the fixture's video, checks the rendition stays published with enabled: false, the player goes black instead of freezing, and playback resumes in sync once re-enabled.

Walkthrough

The change replaces the video stalled hint with an enabled field for audio and video renditions. Catalog schemas, language bindings, FFI records, and the C query are updated. Publishers retain disabled renditions in the catalog and remove stall detection. Viewers exclude disabled renditions from selection. Transcode and catalog conversion paths are updated, and interop tests cover disabling and re-enabling video.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to ccfa8

The change replaces the stalled hint with an enabled flag, and the transcoder now prefers enabled sources. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains in the reviewed code. Final-head CI and the author's stated remaining checks still apply.

Exclude disabled renditions when choosing a transcode source.

If the highest-ranked rendition has enabled: false and a lower-ranked rendition is enabled, choose_source can select the disabled rendition. The new inherit_enabled then disables every transcoded rung despite an available source. Filter disabled candidates here. Also make follow_source reconsider its current source when that source becomes disabled.

Automated review of 5dfbb502d90128e8f3e119757869a6c5003afa8f

Removing the flapping detector and replacing it with one explicit enabled field is a clear simplification, and the black-keyframe teardown is sequenced correctly: Effect waits for the spawned task, so a quick re-enable can't start a second encoder on the track while the old one is still flushing. Two small issues are worth fixing before this lands.

Should fix

1. Rust consumers still pick disabled renditions. Video::ranked() (rs/hang/src/catalog/video/mod.rs:114) doesn't look at enabled, and it's what the first-party Rust selectors use: moq-transcode choose_source (rs/moq-transcode/src/catalog.rs:166), moq-rtc egress pick_video (rs/moq-rtc/src/egress.rs:240), moq-rtmp (server.rs:931), and FLV export (container/flv/export.rs:356). Before this PR, @moq/publish removed a paused rendition, so these never saw it. Now it stays in the catalog, so when one rendition is disabled and a sibling is enabled (the case the new JS selection tests cover), they can pick the disabled one and get one black frame followed by nothing. The transcoder makes this sticky: same_picture (pipeline.rs:22) treats a flip to disabled as the same source, so it stays on the dead rendition and inherit_enabled disables every rung, even though an enabled source exists. The draft now says a consumer MUST NOT select it. Fix: have ranked() skip !enabled, or add a selectable() iterator and use it in these four places. In moq-transcode, treat a source switching to disabled as a reason to choose again whenever an enabled alternative exists. The PR body's follow-up list names moq-cli, moq-gst, and ffi/C, but not these.

2. Unmuting drops the rendition from the catalog until it resolves again. In js/publish/src/video/encoder.ts:414-426, the enabled branch publishes undefined while #live is unset. #runResolved clears #live on disable, and #runCodec clears #codec. After re-enable, #live stays empty until the capture reopens, #dimensions resolves, and the probe (isConfigSupported plus reportedCodec) finishes, so every unmute goes enabled: false, then removed, then present. Audio does the same (audio/encoder.ts:392-423): #config stays undefined until the reopened mic reports a format. This defeats the "mute is a one-field delta" goal for consumers that treat removal as a change, like the moq-hls rendition diff and the transcoder's re-choose, and for the time the camera takes to reopen it looks exactly like the old remove/re-add. The new tests don't catch it because the sample source keeps its format while muted. Fix: in the enabled branch, keep publishing { ...this.#last, ...estimate, enabled: false } while the new config is still pending, and switch to the fresh config once it resolves.

Non-blocking

  • A failed black keyframe kills the track. If the encoder rejects the synthetic I420 frame, or flush() errors, the error callback at encoder.ts:306 calls producer.close(err) on the static track that "the broadcast owns across demand gaps", so a cosmetic teardown step can stop the rendition from ever coming back. Once the run is aborted, swallow the error in the callback (for example, set a flag before encoding the black frame) and just call discontinuity().
  • js/watch/src/video/decoder.ts:173: the new clear-to-black branch resets frame/timestamp but not #out.buffered, unlike the offline branch a few lines below. So buffered ranges from the dropped rendition can linger in the UI.
  • Draft structure: ### enabled {#field-enabled} sits under ## Video but applies to audio too. It would read better under Common Rendition Fields ({#common}), next to label, jitter, and delay, with a note that it's audio and video only.
  • CI: every check is still pending on this head, and the earlier intermediate heads only ran Quest (cancelled), so the new interop disable lane hasn't reported here yet.

Verdict: ITERATE. Filter disabled renditions in ranked() (or its callers), and keep the disabled entry in the catalog until the re-enabled config resolves. Both fixes are small.

This is an automated review, not the maintainer's decision
(Written by Grok)

A disabled rendition sends no frames, yet the transcoder could pick it over a lower-ranked enabled one and disable every rung. Rank enabled renditions first, and let a disabled source give way only to an enabled one, so an all-disabled source still passes enabled: false to its rungs.

Automated follow-up review of 107fde0839c23af9750149dd180e64fee9237de7 (re-review after a push; previous review on 5dfbb502)

The only new commit is 107fde08 (fix(transcode): prefer an enabled source rendition), touching only rs/moq-transcode/src/catalog.rs. It fixes the transcoder half of finding 1 correctly, but leaves the other Rust selectors and finding 2 as they were.

What the push fixes

  • Transcoder no longer gets stuck on a disabled source (part of finding 1). choose_source now tries enabled renditions first and falls back to disabled ones only when nothing enabled can be decoded. follow_source drops a disabled current source when choose_source returns an enabled one, and keeps it otherwise, including on Err. That means Pipeline::follow (pipeline.rs:172-182) sees a new name, rebuilds, and resolve() copies enabled: true from the new source into the rungs, so an all-disabled ladder is no longer forced while an enabled sibling exists. I walked through the edge cases and they hold. If an enabled sibling has no dimensions yet, you get Err(NoSource) and the current source is kept. A refused enabled sibling falls through to a disabled one, which in turn keeps the current source. When every rendition is disabled, the rungs still inherit enabled: false. Both new tests cover the main paths.

Still open

1 (rest). The other Rust consumers still pick disabled renditions. Video::ranked() (rs/hang/src/catalog/video/mod.rs:114) still ignores enabled, so moq-rtc egress pick_video (rs/moq-rtc/src/egress.rs:240), moq-rtmp (server.rs:931), and FLV export (container/flv/export.rs:356) can still choose a disabled rendition over an enabled sibling, which gives one black frame and then nothing. The transcoder now does its own enabled-first ordering. Putting that ordering in ranked(), or in a shared selectable() helper, would fix all four places at once and let choose_source drop its local copy.

2. Unmuting still briefly removes the rendition from the catalog. js/publish/src/video/encoder.ts:414-426 and audio/encoder.ts:392-423 haven't changed, so each unmute still goes from enabled: false to removed and back to present while the capture reopens. This also interacts with the new transcoder logic. While the rendition is gone, follow_source can switch to another rendition, then stays on that one after the original comes back, because an enabled current source is sticky. So an unmute can still cause a source switch and retire rungs.

Non-blocking

  • The transcoder's downgrade is permanent. Say a simulcast publisher disables its top rendition to save uplink. The transcoder moves to the lower enabled one, which is correct, but stays there after the top one is re-enabled, because follow_source only re-chooses when the current source is disabled. The ladder is then capped at the lower source's height until the next restart. If that's intended (avoiding churn), a one-line comment on follow_source would help. If not, consider going back to the preferred source when it comes back enabled.
  • These earlier items are still open: a failed black keyframe closes the static track (encoder.ts:306), #out.buffered isn't reset on the clear-to-black path (js/watch/src/video/decoder.ts:173), and ### enabled sits under ## Video in the draft even though it also applies to audio.
  • CI: every check is still pending on this head, including the Interop lane that exercises disable/re-enable.

Verdict: ITERATE. The transcoder fix is good. Filtering in ranked() (or its remaining callers) and keeping the disabled entry in the catalog until the re-enabled config resolves are still the two small fixes left.

Reviewed commit: 107fde0

No new actionable correctness finding in the inspected changes. Direction is sound: explicit availability replaces a flapping heuristic, detector/timer code is actually removed, and one catalog writer per encoder reduces competing updates. The earlier transcode-source concern is addressed at this head: enabled candidates rank first and a disabled current source yields to an enabled alternative (rs/moq-transcode/src/catalog.rs:170–245).

Checked disabled/manual selection, retained catalog configuration, black-frame teardown against Effect cancellation, serde/FFI defaults and the new disable/resume tests. Native consumer filtering remains the explicitly documented follow-up; this review does not imply all consumers honor enabled yet.

Verification was static only; I did not run builds, tests or browser/interop checks. GitHub reports merge conflicts, so the resolved merge still needs validation.

Video::ranked() feeds every first-party Rust selector (transcode, rtc egress, rtmp, FLV export), so ordering disabled renditions last keeps them all off a rendition with no frames coming while an enabled sibling exists. moq-transcode drops its local copy of the ordering.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Unmuting dropped the rendition from the catalog until the reopened capture resolved a config, so a mute round trip still looked like remove and re-add. Keep advertising the last config with enabled: false until then. A failed black keyframe during teardown no longer closes the track the broadcast owns.

Addressed in dda7e5b7a and the commits before it:

  • Rust selectors: Video::ranked() now orders disabled renditions last, so transcode, rtc egress, rtmp, and FLV export all prefer an enabled sibling; choose_source dropped its local copy.
  • Unmute: a re-enabled rendition keeps its last config with enabled: false until the reopened capture resolves (audio and video, with tests).
  • A failed black keyframe during teardown is logged and no longer closes the track.
  • The watch decoder's clear-to-black path also resets buffered.
  • The draft defines enabled under Common Rendition Fields, noted as audio and video only.

Kept as is: the transcoder staying on an enabled source after a better one re-enables. follow_source already never moves off a valid source for a taller one, to avoid retiring rungs on every catalog edit, and a re-enabled rendition is the same case. It now says so in a comment.

The Interop failure is the max-age step that is broken on main (fixed by #4907 / #4908), which skips the media lane; the new disable case passed locally.

Automated follow-up review of dda7e5b7aab08a727ff6dde97c10114694e34d09 (re-review after a push; previous review on 107fde08)

Three new commits (cbbd5f7f, cfa4b9e9, dda7e5b7) close both open findings and every earlier non-blocking item. I found nothing blocking in the new code.

Fixed

  • Finding 1, Rust consumers picking disabled renditions. Video::ranked() (rs/hang/src/catalog/video/mod.rs:119) now sorts on Reverse((enabled, area, bitrate)), so every caller (transcode choose_source, rtc pick_video, rtmp, FLV export) prefers an enabled sibling. enabled is a plain bool, so true sorts first and the order inside each group is unchanged. choose_source drops its local enabled-then-disabled chain, and the stable sort produces exactly the same order as before, so the transcoder's behavior is unchanged and its earlier tests still apply. The new ranked assertion covers the reordering.
  • Finding 2, unmute briefly removing the rendition. In both encoders, #runCatalog now sets #paused on disable and keeps advertising { ...#last, ...estimate, enabled: false } until a fresh config resolves (video/encoder.ts:423-433, audio/encoder.ts:415-425). I traced the video path: re-enabling reruns #runCodec, which only refills #codec after the async probe, so #live stays empty and the disabled entry holds until then. At that point #runResolved sets out.resolved and #live together, so the encoder configures and the catalog flips in the same update. A rendition that was never resolved still has no #last and stays out of the catalog, so first-announce gating (settled) is unaffected. Both tests now hold the capture closed across the re-enable and assert the entry is unchanged.
  • The failed black keyframe no longer closes the track. tearingDown is set right after abort (video/encoder.ts:389), the error callback only warns once it's set, and the rejected flush() is swallowed, so the finally still runs discontinuity() on the broadcast-owned track.
  • #out.buffered is now cleared on the clear-to-black path (js/watch/src/video/decoder.ts:173-176).
  • The draft's enabled section now sits under Common Rendition Fields, with the field added to CommonExtensions, and the Video and Audio sections no longer redefine it.
  • The transcoder's sticky downgrade is now documented as intentional on follow_source.

Non-blocking

  • A failed unmute now leaves the entry in place indefinitely. If the capture never reopens after re-enabling (permission revoked, device unplugged, a probe that throws), #paused stays set and the rendition stays in the catalog as enabled: false. Before this push, it was removed instead. That's arguably the more accurate signal (no frames are coming), and current consumers won't select it, but a consumer that predates enabled will keep subscribing to a track that never produces frames. If that's the intended trade-off, a sentence in the #runCatalog comment would make it explicit.
  • Draft nit: the Text section (around line 305) still says text renditions carry "the common rendition fields", and CommonExtensions now includes enabled. The new {#field-enabled} text excludes text renditions, so this isn't a contradiction, but "the common rendition fields except enabled" there would make it clearer.
  • CI and merge state: the PR is CONFLICTING with main (10 commits behind), so no CI has run on this head beyond the skipped Auto-merge job. That includes the Interop disable/re-enable lane. On main, drafts/draft-lcurley-moq-hang.md, rs/moq-transcode/src/catalog.rs, rs/hang/src/catalog/root.rs, rs/moq-hls/src/export/rendition.rs, and several moq-mux/moq-ffi/moq-c files have changed since the merge base (for example refactor(net)!: plain u64 varint codec and simulated-time tests (rs2ts) #4437, fix(hls): retain init decoded from completed segments #4840, fix(moq-mux): refuse a moov or Tracks after the importer finished #4898).

Verdict: MERGE once it's rebased onto main and CI is green.

Clear the selection when no rendition remains available.

When the catalog disables the only rendition, Source.#runSelected returns without clearing track or config. The decoder cannot take its !track clear branch. In this test, relativeBroadcast always returns the consumer, so its no-active-broadcast branch cannot clear the frame either. Static flow predicts the test fails first at the frame assertion, and a user can retain the old picture. Clear both outputs at the selection boundary.

@coderabbitai on clearing the selection in Source.#runSelected (js/watch/src/video/source.ts): not changing this. effect.set restores the previous value when the effect reruns, so the early return already leaves out.track and out.config undefined once no rendition is enabled. The decoder test "clears the picture once no rendition is selectable" covers exactly this path. It passes, and it fails without the decoder fix. The browser disable case also sees the canvas go black.

@kixelated, you’re right. I checked Effect.set: when the effect reruns, its cleanup sets out.track and out.config to undefined. If no rendition is enabled, Source.#runSelected then returns without selecting another one. An explicit clear is not needed. I withdraw that concern.

The decoder test covers the resulting picture cleanup. I did not run the tests in this inspection.

Learning: In `js/watch/src/video/source.ts`, `Source.#runSelected` uses `Effect.set` for `out.track` and `out.config`. On an effect rerun, `Effect.set` cleanup resets both signals to `undefined`. If no video rendition is enabled, the early return therefore leaves no selection; an explicit clear in `Source.#runSelected` is unnecessary.

Reviewed 92d377e, following my review of 107fde0 and separating incoming main changes.

No new actionable correctness finding in the targeted update. Enabled-first ranking is now shared by Video::ranked() (rs/hang/src/catalog/video/mod.rs:109–122); delayed re-enable retains the disabled catalog entry until capture resolves (js/publish/src/audio/encoder.ts:414–429; js/publish/src/video/encoder.ts:424–434). Teardown failures no longer abort the persistent video track, and the no-track decoder path clears buffered state. The recent selection-clearing concern does not reproduce by static tracing: Effect.set restores undefined on rerun (js/signals/src/index.ts:747–765), so source.ts:341's early return clears the previous scoped selection.

Direction: coherent improvements to the explicit availability model. Native consumers that do not filter enabled remain the documented follow-up, not a newly discovered regression.

Verification: static code/delta, cleanup semantics and regression-test inspection; no local/browser tests run. Check/platform runs passed; Interop failed at Optional publisher retention, skipping the media lane. GitHub currently reports mergeable=false; the resolved merge and disable/resume path still need validation.

Resolved current main into final head a5a7c21f317b56b6faee3cf7048b31776ab19ce4. The mechanical merge retains main's empty-catalog omission API alongside enabled-first ranking and removes the completed catalog-enabled prerequisites from existing follow-up quests.

The settled enabled API/wire decisions are unchanged: optional default-true enabled on audio/video, ignore legacy stalled, preserve disabled publish configs, deselect disabled renditions in browser watch, and emit one black keyframe for older video viewers. Native filtering and the draft changelog correction remain in their existing quests.

Clean-Nix just check, draft validation, and the full cross-language interop matrix pass. The browser media run passes disable/re-enable, including persistent catalog entry, black output during disable, resumed playback, and A/V sync. The complete local media recipe then fails the previously documented detach resource-baseline assertion with one AudioContext retained; every negative control passes. The PR description records this limitation. Final-head review and CI, including Interop's full media lane, remain required before the normal main merge queue.

Independent final-head integration review of a5a7c21 against the previously reviewed 92d377e.

The merge preserves main's Video::is_empty and this PR's enabled-first ranking, including the ranking implementation. Publisher enabled gating, retained disabled catalog entries, and watcher selection remain intact; inherited removal of the unused audio DTX setting does not change those transitions. The follow-up commit only removes completed prerequisite links. No actionable issue found in the integration delta.

This was a static integration review. The worker reports passing scoped checks, draft validation, full cross-language interop and the browser disable/re-enable case. The separately documented local detach resource-baseline failure remains explicit. Required final-head hosted CI remains the merge gate. The additive optional catalog enabled field and replacement of the prior JS pause/stalled API remain the PR's documented impact.

Final integration summary for ccfa8259738d69ec24fa1a89b595b6b1e4ca57e4:

  • Confirmed choices remain unchanged: optional default-true audio/video enabled replaces ignored legacy stalled; disabling keeps the rendition/configuration in the catalog, with a black video keyframe for older viewers. Browser selection skips disabled renditions. Native consumer filtering stays in its existing follow-up.
  • The draft remains moq-hang-04. FFI audio exposes enabled; a C audio getter waits for a consumer. Rust, JS, FFI and C API breaks and wire compatibility are described in the PR body.
  • Necessary base repair: the watch audio decoder closes its graph when the existing broadcast enabled signal becomes false, while preserving the graph across rendition absence. The regression fails without the fix; no additional public API or wire change is introduced.
  • Current-main integration preserves the removed Live marker and enabled getter docs. The already merged quest: import #4951, #4950, #4945, #4847; decline #4926 #4952 import's missing before-first-keyframe regression is preserved in the narrow existing-scope catalog-early-demand quest. relay: a publisher replacing a killed one is sent the old session's subscriptions before it has published, and moq import ts exits with "rendition is not published" #4945 remains open; this PR does not claim that missing test exists.
  • Complete clean-Nix checks pass across the cleanup and subsequent main integration, including 6,277 default tests and feature/binding/doc checks. Drafts pass. On this exact final head, all 32 interop language pairs, browser refusal, and the complete media lifecycle lane with all four negative controls pass. Detach now releases the audio graph, sessions and workers.

Final-head hosted CI and a fresh clean commit-bound source review remain required before the normal main queue.

Automated follow-up review of ccfa8259738d69ec24fa1a89b595b6b1e4ca57e4 (re-review after a push; previous review on dda7e5b7)

Since dda7e5b7, the real PR-side changes are d2e2dad2 (release the audio graph when the broadcast is disabled) and ccfa8259 (a new quest that keeps the #4945 regression requirement). The rest is origin/main merges plus quest and doc wording I already looked at. The merge with #4952 is resolved correctly: main had added the #4945 decision to quest/m1/catalog-enabled.md, which this PR deletes, and ccfa8259 moves that requirement to quest/m1/catalog-early-demand.md instead of dropping it. Nothing blocking.

d2e2dad2: audio graph released on a broadcast disable

The gate in js/watch/src/audio/decoder.ts:210-212 is correct for the real wiring. Player hands one long-lived Broadcast to the audio Source, and its in.enabled follows the element's connected state. So removing the element now closes the AudioContext, worklet, and ring, while a missing rendition or a mute still keeps the graph warm. #runDecoder already bails when the broadcast is disabled (no active broadcast means no track), so nothing writes to the cleared #ring. The new test checks close-on-disable and rebuild-on-enable, and no other test builds a Decoder against a broadcast mock without in.

Non-blocking:

  1. The graph is now keyed on broadcast identity, not just the shape. effect.get(this.source.in.broadcast) makes #runWorklet rerun whenever the Broadcast object changes, and not only when enabled flips. With Player that never happens. But Source takes broadcast as a Getter, so an app that swaps broadcasts on a custom Source would now get a new AudioContext each time. That contradicts the comment on #shape (lines 112-113, "keyed on this alone"). A small computed such as effect.get(broadcast.in.enabled) behind a Computed<boolean> would rerun only on the enabled flip. Either way, the #shape comment should mention the broadcast gate.
  2. A re-attached player now starts with a fresh AudioContext. Before, the running context survived a DOM detach and re-attach, such as a React re-parent or a tile moved in a grid. Now Util.Gesture.unlock has to resume a new context that was created outside a gesture. That works in Chrome once the page has sticky activation, but it's worth checking on iOS Safari, where a re-attached player might stay silent until the next tap. If it does, the doc/lib/js/watch.md line should say so.

ccfa8259: early-demand quest

I checked its claims against head. publish_stalled and the Detector are gone from rs/moq-mux/src/codec/video.rs, and publish() writes through track.set() (line 64), with no modify() left in that path. #4942 is merged, and #4945 is still open. One nit: the regression test this quest asks for is small, and this PR is the change that fixes the bug, so adding the test here would let #4945 close with the PR instead of waiting on a follow-up quest.

Earlier findings

Both earlier findings remain fixed. The failed-unmute note, where a rendition is left at enabled: false if the capture never reopens, is now documented in 92d377e3 and has no code change, which is fine.

CI was still pending on ccfa8259 at review time (18 checks queued).

Verdict: MERGE once CI is green.

Merge remains blocked at ccfa825 by hosted Interop: https://github.com/moq-dev/moq/actions/runs/37588130050/job/112682937101. Check and the completed platform checks pass; required Test is still queued.

The failed Go-to-browser leg receives video but reports audioBytes=0. Catalog and tone subscriptions succeed, and there is no browser decoder error. The source Go WebTransport connection closes roughly ten seconds after startup, reconnects, then closes again. The Go publisher artifact contains no tone error; native fixture logging was not initialized, so it does not explain the source closure. Native subscriber legs check video rather than audio and therefore do not establish an audio pass.

The exact-head local 32-pair matrix and complete browser media lifecycle already pass. Additional diagnostic runs pinned to two CPU cores pass both the isolated Go cohort with all eight subscribers and the full 32-pair sequence. Those diagnostic runs temporarily enabled native Go debug logs; that instrumentation was removed and the checkout is clean. They provide no evidence for a source fix, and I have not rerun the failed hosted job or changed a timeout. The failure also occurred on the earlier integrated head before the quiet-catalog fix, so that fix is not established as its cause.

Next useful investigation: capture native Go connection logs in the hosted environment and reproduce the closure/audio absence before repairing it. The required final-head review and passing Interop/Test gates remain outstanding. No merge was issued.

Reviewed commit: ccfa825, following my 92d377e review and separating incoming main changes.

No new actionable correctness finding in the targeted update. js/watch/src/audio/decoder.ts:210–212 now observes broadcast availability before creating the graph; effect cleanup closes its context, disconnects the worklet and clears the exposed signals. Re-enable rebuilds from retained shape, while a disabled catalog rendition still keeps the warm graph. decoder.test.ts:261–282 covers close/clear/rebuild. The early-demand regression remains explicitly open in quest/m1/catalog-early-demand.md:17–23, rather than disappearing with the completed detector quest.

Direction: coherent resource-lifetime fix alongside the explicit availability model.

Verification: static delta, lifecycle and regression-test review; no tests run independently. Current-head Check passes, but Interop 37588130050 fails go→js waiting for browser audio (audioBytes=0, broadcast offline); subsequent media lifecycle checks are skipped. That log does not establish a cause or a regression in this change. GitHub now reports the branch mergeable.

Merged current main into d03d028f6eb42bf5fd9443d9b6b7c6ba207c5cf3. The only conflict was quest/m1/README.md: kept main's iroh-capsule-bump entry (which replaced wt-close-backends) and this PR's catalog-early-demand entry. just check passes locally.

Interop triage for the failed go -> js browser cell on ccfa8259 (run 37588130050): it is the same pre-existing failure seen on main (run 37511624075, python -> js and go -> js) and on #5004's base (run 37388778078). In each, the browser times out "waiting for browser audio" with audioBytes: 0 while the source broadcast flaps offline. Here all three announced broadcasts (rust, python, go) went active=false at the same instant, and the video subscription later ended with remote error: 0, so the subscriber lost its upstream rather than mis-selecting audio. This PR's audio change gates the graph on broadcast.in.enabled, which the element drives from attach/detach, not from announcements, and the failing state still had its AudioContext. Neither the Go publisher nor the browser subscribe path reads enabled differently for an enabled rendition. So I left it unfixed here.

Auto-merge enabled at d03d028f6eb42bf5fd9443d9b6b7c6ba207c5cf3.

  • Review: the OpenAI review of ccfa8259 found nothing actionable. Since then the only change is a main merge whose one conflict (quest/m1/README.md) kept main's entries and dropped this PR's completed catalog-enabled line.
  • Decisions: as recorded in the PR body; nothing new.
  • Hosted Interop python/go -> js browser cells are a known flake and not required.

Merged current main into 7a2192c2ba25cdf8f373b42e105f8940ee4dd9b0 after #4988 and #4822 landed. Two conflicts, resolved as the union of both sides:

  • js/watch/src/video/source.ts: kept main's Catalog.ranked (so bestRendition goes) and this PR's enabledRenditions (so the stalled-based selectableRenditions goes).
  • doc/lib/c/index.md: kept main's untimed timestamp_present note and this PR's moq_consume_video_enabled wording.

js/hang and js/watch typecheck and tests pass locally, as does cargo check --tests for hang, moq-mux, moq-ffi and moq-c. Auto-merge is re-armed on the new head.

#4968 landed right after the last push and conflicted again, so CI never ran on 7a2192c2. Merged main again into e181f8668c6f3bb7af0808ff5f8ecd3261985ab1. The only conflict was this PR's disabled-keyframe test in js/publish/src/video/encoder.test.ts, which now passes main's required timescale to accept. All JS packages typecheck, hang/publish/watch tests pass, and the touched Rust crates cargo check --tests cleanly. Auto-merge is re-armed on this head.
