Problem

The js -> rust interop row has failed about 3 of 4 runs since #4883. The browser publishes its Opus rendition before the WebCodecs encoder reports the OpusHead, so the first catalog has no description. fmp4::Export built dOps with a guessed pre-skip (0). Then the catalog gained the real head (pre-skip 312), and #4883's strict sample-entry check failed with rendition audio changed its codec configuration after it was declared. The row passed only when the first catalog snapshot already had the head.

Fix

  • An Opus sample entry synthesized without a catalog description is now provisional. When either side of the comparison is provisional, the check skips dOps pre-skip and input sample rate. The input rate is metadata only (RFC 7845 §5.1), and the decode rate in the audio sample entry is still compared. Channel count, decode sample rate, output gain and the rest of the entry still have to match, so a real change is still TrackChanged. Gain is not treated as a guess: it scales every decoded sample, and an init that is already written can't fix it. WebCodecs writes a gain of 0, which matches the guess.
  • When a head settles a provisional entry, it replaces the stored declaration. If the init hasn't been written yet, the init gets the real pre-skip. If it has, the written init keeps the guess, and later changes are compared against the real head.
  • synthesize_audio_trak now refuses an OpusHead whose channel count contradicts the catalog entry, with the new fmp4::Error::OpusChannelCount. Without this, a head present from the first catalog could produce an init whose sample entry and dOps disagree. This applies to both fmp4::Export and fmp4::Muxer. A late head with a different channel count only arrives together with a changed catalog count, which fails with TrackChanged.

Pre-skip trade-off

If the init is already written when the head arrives, its dOps pre-skip stays 0 instead of the encoder's value (312 samples for libopus, 6.5 ms at 48 kHz). A player then doesn't trim the encoder's warm-up: the first 6.5 ms of decoded audio is lookahead (near-silent), and audio runs 6.5 ms behind video. That is too small to notice as a lip-sync error, so this keeps the written init rather than re-initializing the file mid-stream. When video is still waiting for its first keyframe, the head usually arrives first and the init gets the correct value.

Public API and wire impact

  • New variant fmp4::Error::OpusChannelCount { catalog, head }. The enum is #[non_exhaustive], so this is additive.
  • Behavior change: fmp4::Export now accepts an OpusHead that arrives after a declaration without one; before, this failed. fmp4::Export and fmp4::Muxer now refuse an OpusHead that contradicts the catalog's channel count; before, they wrote the catalog's count into dOps.
  • No wire change. The JS publisher is unchanged.

Tests

  • a_later_opus_head_settles_the_guess: the rendition is declared without a head and the init is written. The head, which records a 44.1 kHz input rate, then arrives and audio keeps flowing. A second head with a different pre-skip fails with TrackChanged. Fails without the fix.
  • an_opus_head_before_the_init_is_written: the init carries the settled pre-skip. Fails without the fix.
  • an_opus_head_that_disagrees_fails: after a stereo declaration with no head, either a mono catalog entry with a mono head, or a head with -6 dB gain, fails with TrackChanged.
  • a_settled_opus_head_survives_a_return: a settled rendition leaves, returns without its head, and then gets the same head again. The audio keeps flowing.
  • synthesize_opus_trak_refuses_a_contradicting_head: a mono head under a stereo catalog entry fails with OpusChannelCount.
  • just check passes. Before the fix, just test interop --publishers js --subscribers rust failed 3 of 4 runs with the error above. With the fix, just test interop --all passed js -> rust in 5 of 5 runs, and just test interop --publishers js --subscribers rust passed 5 of 5 on 05ec98b. python -> js and go -> js still failed in every run; fix(net): a parked group's expiry no longer walks the backlog #4892 fixes those.

A browser declares its Opus rendition before the encoder reports the
OpusHead, so the export synthesized dOps with a guessed pre-skip and then
failed with TrackChanged when the real head arrived. An Opus entry
synthesized without a catalog description is now provisional: a later head
that agrees on everything but pre-skip and gain settles it. dOps now takes
its channel count from the head, so a head that disagrees still fails.

A written init can't take back a guessed output gain, and the gain scales
every sample, so only pre-skip is left out of the provisional comparison.

Verdict: needs-attention

  • [high] Reject late output-gain changes after the init is written (rs/moq-mux/src/container/fmp4/export.rs, sample_entry). The first version left output gain out of the provisional comparison along with pre-skip. A late OpusHead with a -6 dB gain would have been accepted while the written init kept gain 0, so the whole recording would play 6 dB too loud. Unlike pre-skip, gain affects every decoded sample, and the Opus-in-ISOBMFF spec requires dOps OutputGain to match the header.

Resolution in 2a5d827: only pre-skip is treated as a guess now. A gain change fails with TrackChanged, both before and after the init is written. an_opus_head_that_disagrees_fails now covers a -6 dB head as well as a mono head. WebCodecs writes a gain of 0, so the browser path is unaffected. just check passes.

No other findings.

OpusHead's input sample rate is metadata (RFC 7845 5.1), so a late head
recording a 44.1 kHz source settles the guess too. The decode rate in the
audio sample entry is still compared.

Adversarial review, second pass (Codex, via peer-review), on 2a5d827

Verdict: needs-attention

  • [medium] Normalize the guessed Opus input sample rate too (rs/moq-mux/src/container/fmp4/export.rs, sample_entry). The guess sets dOps InputSampleRate to the catalog rate. A valid late OpusHead that records a 44.1 kHz (or 0, unspecified) input rate would still have failed with TrackChanged. Per RFC 7845 §5.1 that field is informational.

Resolution in 05ec98b: the provisional comparison now skips the input rate along with pre-skip. The decode rate in the audio sample entry, the channel count and the gain are still compared. The test heads now record a 44.1 kHz input rate, so the settle tests cover this case, and the disagree test shows that channel and gain changes still fail. just check passes.

Automated review: head 05ec98b7

Fixes the flaky js -> rust interop row: an Opus rendition declared without an OpusHead now gets a provisional sample entry, and a later head that only corrects pre-skip and input rate settles it instead of failing with TrackChanged. The change is small and well-scoped. Channel count, decode rate, and gain are still compared strictly, and the three tests cover settling before and after the init plus the disagreeing cases. I didn't find any blocking issues.

Non-blocking

  1. The dOps channel count can now disagree with the audio sample entry. rs/moq-mux/src/container/fmp4/mod.rs:748 takes output_channel_count from the head, but audio.channel_count (line 727) still comes from config.channel_count. When the first catalog Export sees already carries a head that disagrees with the catalog (for example catalog stereo, head mono), there's no earlier declaration to compare against. The init is then written with channelcount=2 in the Opus box and OutputChannelCount=1 in dOps. Before this PR the entry was self-consistent, even if wrong. Either reject the mismatch in synthesize_audio_trak, for example as UnsupportedChannelCount or a new error, or derive both from the head.
  2. Muxer also picks up the channel-count change. muxer.rs:260 calls the same synthesize_audio_trak, so the one-shot CMAF muxer's init now uses the head's channel count too. That's probably what you want, but the "Public API and wire impact" section only mentions fmp4::Export, and no muxer test pins it.
  3. The rejoin path isn't tested. The likely real-world sequence after a browser reconnect goes like this. The rendition leaves after the init, then returns through rejoin without a head (provisional against the now-settled declaration, so the guessed comparison passes), and then gets its head again. All the new tests stay on reconfigure. A short test of leave, return without a head, then return with the same head would lock in that a settled declaration stays settled and doesn't trip TrackChanged.
  4. There's a small known gap in the settled state. Once the init is written with pre-skip 0 and settled to 312, a later real head that says pre-skip 0 fails TrackChanged, even though it matches what the file actually declares. That's unlikely with libopus and acceptable. I'm only noting it because the docs line ("an init already written keeps the guess") might suggest the written value stays authoritative.

CI: Check and Test were still pending at review time.

Verdict: MERGE (once CI is green)

Walkthrough

The exporter marks synthesized Opus declarations without a catalog description as provisional. It ignores guessed pre-skip and input sample rate when comparing a provisional declaration with a later description, while still checking other sample-entry fields. A definitive declaration can replace the provisional declaration. Synthesized Opus output now uses the channel count from the parsed or constructed Opus header. Tests cover descriptions received before and after init creation and cases that return TrackChanged. Documentation describes this behavior.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 05ec9

Opus exports with conflicting channel metadata can produce an invalid init segment, and the CLI guidance misstates which later heads are accepted. Correct both before merging, or accept the bounded risk.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 05ec9

The metadata-settlement change preserves important compatibility checks. However, conflicting channel information supplied at initialization can now produce inconsistent channel declarations. The supported impact is limited to affected media output; a broader security exploit has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · observed: Shared Opus synthesis now uses different authorities for its two channel declarations. An initial catalog declaring stereo with a valid mono OpusHead constructs Audio.channel_count=2 and dOps.output_channel_count=1. The first declaration is stored without reconciling these fields, and the existing muxer consumes the same helper. This creates a downstream configuration-consistency risk before the later-change guard applies; encoding and playback consequences are not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is existing Legacy/LOC Opus input consumed by the exporter or rendition muxer and consumers of the resulting media. The exporter combines tracks into one init, so downstream rejection could affect that presentation. Cross-tenant, service-wide and decoder-compromise effects are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A source able to supply both initial catalog channels and OpusHead can select conflicting values that reach synthesis. This is a conditional input path, not a verified exploit: deployment authorization and player behavior are unavailable. Acceptance of inconsistent input predates the PR; construction of conflicting Audio and dOps channel fields is introduced by it.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The settlement comparison retains rejection of changed channels and output gain. The disagreement tests begin after a guessed init has been emitted, so their protection does not establish consistency of an initially definitive description.

Taking dOps channels from the head let a head present from the first

instead, keep dOps on the catalog count, and cover a rendition that
returns without its head after settling.

Automated review of d57b3f07 (full review: first Grok pass on this PR)

The fix is narrowly scoped and the logic holds up. Only an Opus entry synthesized without a catalog description is marked provisional (export.rs:361). Pre-skip and input rate are masked only when one side of the comparison is provisional (export.rs:309). The settle overwrites the stored declaration only when going from provisional to real (export.rs:316). I traced the cases: guess then head, head then a return without its head, a return without its head then the same head, and guess then a head with a different gain or channel count. Each one either keeps the track or fails with TrackChanged, as the PR describes. The new channel check in synthesize_audio_trak (mod.rs:745) is safe for in-tree publishers. The JS encoder, opus::import::config, From<opus::Config>, and the moq-rtc bridge all derive the catalog channel count and the head from the same value, so it only rejects genuinely contradictory catalogs.

No blocking issues.

Non-blocking

  1. OpusChannelCount doesn't name the rendition (mod.rs:746). In fmp4::Export with several audio renditions, the error says "Opus head has 1 channels but the catalog declares 2" without saying which track. The neighbouring export errors (TrackChanged(name), TrackUndescribed(names)) do name it. Consider adding the name at the Export call site (export.rs:359), or a track field, so a failed interop run points at the right rendition.
  2. After a post-init settle, declaration no longer mirrors the written init (export.rs:316-318). The init keeps pre-skip 0 while declared.trak now carries 312. That's intended, and today declaration.trak is only read to build the one init (export.rs:849-851) and to compare against. A short note on the declaration field would stop a future change, like re-emitting an init or deriving fragment metadata from it, from assuming it matches the bytes on disk.
  3. Test gap: an in-place description drop. a_settled_opus_head_survives_a_return covers the rejoin path (the rendition leaves and returns without its head). The JS publisher can also republish the same rendition without description while a reconfigured encoder hasn't reported its head yet (js/publish/src/audio/encoder.ts:412). That goes through reconfigure → describe with a settled declaration and a provisional candidate. A cheap test would set description = None via modify() without removing the rendition, then restore the same head and assert audio keeps flowing.
  4. The two disagreement cases in an_opus_head_that_disagrees_fails also pass without the fix, because any change failed before. They're useful guards on how far the relaxation goes, but the doc comment could say they guard the masking's limits rather than reproduce the bug.

CI (Check, Test, macOS, Windows, Android) is still pending on this head.

Verdict: MERGE once CI is green.

Merge summary (head d57b3f07e4471679903386b5f6fdcfea1f1e8d55)

Changes: fmp4::Export treats an Opus entry synthesized without a catalog description as provisional. A later OpusHead that differs only in pre-skip and input rate settles it instead of failing with TrackChanged. Channel count, decode rate and gain are still compared strictly. synthesize_audio_trak now refuses an OpusHead whose channel count contradicts the catalog, with the new fmp4::Error::OpusChannelCount.

Decisions:

  • If the init is already written when the head arrives, the init keeps the guessed pre-skip (0) rather than re-initializing the file. The cost is up to 6.5 ms of untrimmed encoder delay at the start.
  • Output gain is not treated as a guess, because it scales every sample (Codex review).
  • Input sample rate is treated as a guess, because it is metadata only (RFC 7845 §5.1, Codex review).
  • A head that contradicts the catalog's channel count is refused rather than written beside it (CodeRabbit and Grok).

Verification: CI is green. Before the fix, js -> rust interop failed 3 of 4 runs. After it, it passed 13 of 13 runs across the last three heads. python -> js and go -> js are left to #4892.

Deferred (non-blocking, from Grok's review of d57b3f07):

  • OpusChannelCount does not name the rendition.
  • Add a field note that declaration may no longer match the written init after a post-init settle.
  • Add a test for an in-place description drop through reconfigure.
  • Reword the doc comment on the disagreement test as a guard on the leniency.
