Summary

Follow-ups from the #4761 merge review, decided by the maintainer. Quest changes only.

Public API: none. Wire: none.

Decisions

Should transcode-group-start become Required on the m0 Wildcard line?

  • ✅ Require it
  • Keep the note only

Should stats epochs gate the next release?

  • ✅ Gate it
  • Accept the risk

Which route rule is intended for a serving front?

  • Stay on route, align main's code and tests
  • ✅ Switch to a cheaper route

When should a serving front move?

  • Strictly cheaper only
  • ✅ Full re-select (rehash on every join or re-price)

Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius.

Walkthrough

The broadcast-epoch quest adds Stats epochs to the release gate and requires each moq-stats node to publish under its own epoch. The wildcard quest makes group-boundary work a requirement and specifies route reselection for serving fronts after joins and re-prices. The route-wakes proposal updates which fronts are rehashed or awakened for route changes and adds verification criteria.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in quest/m0/broadcast-epoch/README.md: The Plan changes Stats epochs from outside the release gate to part of it, recording the October 4, 2026 decision and stating that a restarted Stats node under a reused name can stall viewers until it lands.
  • observed — Modified behavior in quest/m0/broadcast-epoch/README.md: The Required list adds Stats epochs, specifying that each moq-stats node publishes under its own epoch so a restart does not stall its viewers.
  • observed — Modified behavior in quest/m0/wildcard/README.md: The group-boundary dependency is now required before workers can ship, replacing the prior warning that workers might be spliced mid-group. A new serving-front decision says joins and re-prices reselect fronts below the prefix, and fronts move to a cheaper route or the equal-cost rendezvous winner.
  • observed — Modified behavior in quest/m0/wildcard/README.md: Adds a Required section linking the transcode group-boundary quest and stating that it makes claim workers at one path interchangeable without mid-group splicing.

Review: looks good.

  • Wildcard Required now names transcode-group-start, and the old Related entry is removed, so the ship-order note is gone rather than duplicated.
  • Broadcast epochs lists Stats epochs under Required and the Decided bullet matches.
  • Stay rule: no remaining reference to it in quest/ contradicts "serving fronts follow the best route". The one leftover was the route-wakes Facts bullet describing the wildcard line's Pin::Stay short-circuit in best_route; I pushed 2b93421 noting it goes with the new rule. cluster-routing/selection.md (HRW, failover moves only the lost core's paths) and transport-upgrade/rust.md (front reselects to the newest route) are consistent.
  • route-wakes Goal and Verification agree: leaves stay flat in served paths, joins and re-prices pay one rehash per front with select only for moved paths.
  • quest check passes.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit 2b93421.

Direction: making both correctness dependencies Required is useful, and the route-wakes plan now honestly accounts for a per-front rehash on joins/re-prices while avoiding unchanged fronts' track work. This remains a focused planning change with no direct API/wire modification.

P2 remains: make the required group-boundary contract survive caching relays before declaring the new switching rule safe (wildcard/README.md:172–179). I independently confirmed the existing #4761 finding, rather than adding another inline comment. The required transcode-group-start.md:7–21 still constrains only requests reaching a transcoder. If a viewer consumed worker A's group prefix and switches to a relay caching worker B's group, that relay can serve B's suffix without contacting B. #4741's current resume.rs:833–859 resumes at the existing frame index; track.rs:2645–2663 bypasses upstream requests on a cache hit. Matching catalogs and group numbers does not make independently encoded predictive frames interchangeable. Extend the required quest with an end-to-end, cache-preserved boundary contract and a two-caching-relay failover test, or require byte-identical output/distinct paths.

No other actionable bugs found. Verification: static diff, dependency and targeted code review only; no tests, quest checks, benchmarks or live failover run.

Review (2b93421)

Quest-only follow-ups from #4761: promotes ship-order notes into Required gates, and replaces the Stay serving-front rule with follow-the-best-route (with route-wakes adapted). Links and Required targets check out; the three files stay consistent with each other and with #4741's path-is-one-broadcast premise.

Blocking

None.

Non-blocking

  1. CI still pending on this head — Check and Test were QUEUED at review time (docs-only; expected to pass). Auto-merge is already enabled and waiting on them (mergeStateStatus: BLOCKED until green).
  2. Wording precision (optional) — quest/m0/wildcard/README.md (~L175–177) says a join or re-price "re-selects every front below the prefix", while quest/m1/route-wakes.md (~L52–54) is tighter: rehash every front, select only for paths the changed route now wins. Same decision; wildcard could mirror the route-wakes phrasing to avoid implying a full select for fronts that keep their route.

Cross-checks

  • /quest/m1/transcode-group-start.md and /quest/m1/stats-epoch.md resolve on this head and on main (not 404).
  • Wildcard Required ↔ double-claim / group-boundary story matches transcode-group-start's Related back-link.
  • Broadcast-epoch Required adds Stats epochs; Decided bullet matches ("also gates the release").
  • Pin::Stay short-circuit note in route-wakes Facts matches the wildcard line branch (quest/m0/wildcard/README): Pin::Stay(u64) early-out in best_route. Consistent with "that short-circuit goes with follow-the-best-route".
  • fix(net)!: resume route changes by reading the routes' copies; a path is one broadcast #4741 still OPEN (path is one broadcast; any covering route resumes) — the safety claim for moving fronts is sound once that lands; this PR only updates quest policy.
  • quest: a path is the only content identity #4761 MERGED — this correctly settles the prior NBs (ship-order → Required, stats-epoch outside gate → gate, Stay vs cheaper-route → follow best).

Verdict: MERGE

Review (61cee26)

Quest-only follow-up that settles the three maintainer decisions left open after #4761: promote transcode-group-start to Required on Wildcard, gate the release on stats-epoch, and replace Stay with “serving fronts follow the best route” (with route-wakes adapted). Links to quest/m1/transcode-group-start.md and quest/m1/stats-epoch.md resolve on this head; wildcard ↔ route-wakes stay aligned on the new rule.

Blocking

None.

Non-blocking

  1. Wildcard “re-selects every front” vs route-wakes rehash/select split. quest/m0/wildcard/README.md says a join or re-price “re-selects every front below the prefix,” but quest/m1/route-wakes.md (and this PR’s own summary) carefully say: rehash every front below the prefix, select only for paths the changed route now wins. That distinction is the whole point of the adapted wake budget. Prefer matching the route-wakes wording in the Wildcard bullet so implementers do not treat full select as required for keepers.

  2. Stats-epoch gate phrasing. quest/m0/broadcast-epoch/README.md now says stats epochs “also gates the release …: a restarted stats node … stalls its viewers,” which drops the old “until it lands” conditional. Same intent as the main epoch gate bullet, but a “without it / until it lands” clause would match the surrounding style and avoid reading as an unconditional present stall after the gate lands.

  3. CI on this head: Check and Test still pending at review time (docs-only; Auto-merge skipped as expected).

Verdict: MERGE

Cross-check: closes the #4761 NBs that this PR scoped (ship-order → Required, stats outside-gate → gate, Stay vs #4741 → best-route). #4741 is still open; the “safe because a path is one broadcast” claim is planning against that design, not claiming it is on main yet. Out of scope here (still open from #4761): quest/m1/qos/final-lag-sample.md splicer bitrot.

Review (2b93421)

Settles the maintainer decisions from #4761: Wildcard Requires transcode-group-start, broadcast epochs Requires/gates on stats-epoch, and serving fronts follow the best route (replacing Stay), with route-wakes adapted to leave-flat / join-rehash. The three files agree on the new rule, and both Required links resolve on this head.

Blocking

None.

Non-blocking

  1. Wildcard "re-selects every front" vs route-wakes rehash. quest/m0/wildcard/README.md says a join or re-price "re-selects every front below the prefix". quest/m1/route-wakes.md is stricter and better matches the intent: rehash every front, select only for paths the changed route now wins. Worth aligning the Wildcard bullet to "rehash / move when another route wins" so implementers do not pay a full select+track-poll on keepers.

  2. Pin::Stay wording is accurate but line-local. The Facts note that the Pin::Stay short-circuit "goes with" follow-the-best-route matches the wildcard line (Pin::Stay(u64) in front.rs / early return in best_route on quest(wildcard): Wildcard advertisements #4403). Main has no Stay variant. Fine as a line-branch fact; just do not read it as present on main today.

  3. quest/m1/qos/final-lag-sample.md still describes spliced segments (carried from quest: a path is the only content identity #4761). Out of scope here; still bitrots when fix(net)!: resume route changes by reading the routes' copies; a path is one broadcast #4741 deletes the splicer.

  4. CI on this head: Check and Test were still pending at review time (Auto-merge skipped, expected for docs).

Verdict: MERGE

Cross-check: #4741 still open (path-only identity; follow-the-best-route is safe because any covering route resumes). #4761 MERGE NBs on Required/stats-epoch gate / Stay are settled here; qos splicer note remains a separate follow-up. Pin::Stay removal belongs with the wildcard line when it adopts this rule (or when #4741's Pin deletion lands first and the line adapts).

Align route selection with the route-wakes contract.

The route-wakes contract in the PR context rehashes every front but runs select only for paths that move. This wording requires re-selecting every front, including fronts whose winning route stays unchanged. Change it to require rehashing every front and selecting only paths that move.

Add a prefix-scoped index of active fronts.

The route associations and waiter sets do not include active fronts that a joining or repriced route may newly win. OriginState.fronts only provides whole-cache iteration, so scanning it also visits fronts outside the prefix. Add a separate index for active-front prefix enumeration and maintain it as fronts select and close.

Include parked waiters in leave wakeups.

sync_route currently pokes every watch below the prefix. The proposed index stores routed_broadcast waiters separately from a route’s served/requesting fronts, but the leave rule says to wake only the latter. A leave can therefore skip the parked waiter required by the withdrawal case, leaving it asleep instead of retrying against the unshadowed root. Include both waiter sets in the leave rule.

Suggested wording
- A leave wakes only the fronts
- the leaver served or was requesting through.
+ A leave wakes waiting fronts and `routed_broadcast` waiters below the prefix,
+ plus fronts the leaver served or was requesting through.
