fix(net): a subscriber hands its cursors off to a park's cache - #4698
Conversation
A takeover that retired a copy mid-group parked its warm cache, which drops every segment and splices the cache as a fresh one. A reader already mid-group got a second cursor over the cache and was handed the open group again. Swap the segment's track for its cache instead: readers on it keep their cursor, newcomers read the cache, and a cursor that died with its source picks the cache up past what its reader already has. Direction is right: retaining the segment's identity and range avoids abusing the idle-only park operation, while preserving the cached head for newcomers.
[P2] Independently confirmed the existing late-failure recovery finding at resume.rs:1837–1850. An active reader can be waiting before group 0 arrives, then remain unpolled while another reader receives its head and the source dies. Retirement marks that reader's cache flag but does not replace its Active cursor. Its next read discovers the error and becomes Done; the one-time transition no longer retries the cache. Because source teardown removes unfinished groups and the replacement starts inside group 0, that reader cannot obtain its head and can stall indefinitely on an open catalog/log group.
Recover when the old cursor subsequently becomes terminal, retaining the handed-out-group floor. Extend the regression to this ordering: initialize a waiting reader before the first group, deliver the head, retire the failed source, then resume that reader. The existing outage test exercises a cursor already Done before retirement. No duplicate inline comment added.
Verification: traced retirement, source teardown, cursor activation/read paths, and the changed tests. No tests run here (Rust toolchain unavailable); the author's relay reproduction was not independently executed, and CI was still pending.

The new TCP regression in goaway_cluster.rs:121–214 adds useful coverage of the original mid-group duplicate: it checks the held group's remainder and requires the next delivered group to advance. Keeping the segment identity remains the right direction, with no public API or wire change. No new actionable bugs found in this test-only delta.
The previous P2 recovery finding remains unresolved: resume.rs:1837–1850 still latches cache while an Active/Pending cursor can subsequently fail, preventing that reader from picking up the cached head. Recover on that later terminal transition while retaining the delivery floor, and cover a reader first polled after retirement. The new test holds an already-delivered group and does not exercise this ordering. This is unchanged status, not a duplicate inline finding.
Verification: inspected the exact commit, surrounding announcement/reconnect code, and the unchanged recovery state transitions. Rust/Nix/just are unavailable here, so I did not run the regression, reproduce its reported failure on main, or run repository checks. Exact-head CI was still running.

Retiring in place kept the continuation's mid-group start, so after enough takeovers of one open group no segment could hand its head to a newcomer. Keep the park, which leaves one unbounded cache segment, and make the subscriber treat it as a handoff instead: drop the cursors it replaced and start the cache's cursor past what the reader was already handed. [P2] Preserve older parked groups that the new cache does not contain. resume.rs:1805–1809 drops every replaced cursor and its parked groups, but warm_copy copies only the outgoing source plus the saved edge, not every earlier segment.
For example, with a replay budget and no time advance: park completed group 0 from A behind end_at(..0); take over onto B at group 1 and poll the still-capped reader so A's boundary is recorded; let B produce open group 1, then take over onto C. A's finished group bypassed warming at origin.rs:2470–2472, so this cache contains B's group 1 but no group 0. The new retain removes A's parked copy, and raising the cap to 2 silently skips group 0. Previously that capped cursor could drain. Preserve older ranges/parked groups absent from the replacement cache, or include them in the cache before dropping their cursors. Extend the cap regression across these two takeovers; its current cache explicitly contains every parked group.
The earlier late-failure recovery issue is addressed: removing the one-time cache flag prevents an Active/Pending cursor from remaining attached after handoff. Reusing the park path simplifies the design, provided it preserves unread content across all replaced ranges. The latest relay-test change also consumes A's replay before waiting for B. No public API or wire change identified.
Verification: static trace of both revisions, cache construction, cursor retention and finished-group ownership; Rust/Nix/just are unavailable, so no regression or repository tests were run. Exact-head CI remains pending.

Picks up #4698, which hands a subscriber's cursors off to a park's cache. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Problem
A cluster relay redirected by GOAWAY from upstream A to sibling B while group 1 is half read hands group 1 to the reader twice on moq-lite-05/06/07-wip: it drains
1/a 1/b 1/c <end>, thenrecv_groupyields group 1 again in full before group 2. Reproduced withgoaway_mid_group.rsfrom kidq330/moq@afc2e8240 (a_goaway_mid_group_keeps_every_frame_before_moving_on).The cause is #4655's mid-group takeover. To keep the open group's head for later readers,
TrackIo::retireparks a warm cache of the outgoing copy (resume::Producer::park), which replaces every segment with one unbounded cache segment. Aresume::Subscriberalready reading took the cache as one more segment: it opened a second cursor over content its old cursors had already delivered, and the cache's copy of group 1 starts at frame 0, so it surfaced as a new group. It only hit when the takeover landed mid-group (the publisher had not moved on), which is why the other cases passed.Fix
resume::Subscribertreats a park as a handoff. When a snapshot brings a cache segment it hasn't seen, the cursors on the segments it replaced are dropped, and the cache's cursor starts past the newest group this reader was already handed:The same handoff applies to the idle-track park, for a subscriber that outlives it.
Tests
a_takeover_keeps_the_open_group_head_for_later_readers(origin, paused clock): the reader mid-group is not handed group 0 again (fails onmain), and a reader joining during the outage still gets the whole group.repeated_parks_mid_group_hand_the_head_out_once(resume):MAX_SEGMENTS + 1mid-group parks of one open group; the reader never gets it twice, and a newcomer gets every frame from the head.a_park_reoffers_a_group_held_at_the_cap_once(resume): a group parked at the cap comes out once after the park.cluster_continues_a_group_split_by_goaway(relay, real TCP): the end-to-end repro, trimmed to wait on B's route instead of sleeping. About 1 s; uses the default version (lite-06). The fork's full repro passes on lite-05, -06 and -07-wip.Each fails with the handoff removed.
Impact
No public API or wire change.
