Problem

On a partial mesh, a relay two hops from a publisher hears only that its neighbor withdrew a broadcast, not why. It switches to another path derived from the same announcement and advertises it, its peers resurrect the name, and the mesh hunts through every stale path (moq-dev/moq.pro#2116: 575 to 57,805 mesh announce starts per ended Kick name).

#4642 (merged) holds a changed route 300 ms at every announce cursor. On the same 34-relay graph it still hunts for 16 of 34 publishers: once a relay has retracted, a stale path that arrives later is a new route and goes out at once.

Approach

Replace #4642's cursor hold with a hold on the announce stream to a cluster peer only (the session's subscribe origin is Producer::peer), lite-05+:

  • When the route we advertised no longer stands and another takes over, retract at once, and advertise the replacement only once it survives HOLD_DOWN (1 s). Anything that arrives for that path during the hold replaces the held route instead of going out as new. A stale replacement is withdrawn within the window and never spreads.
  • New routes, retractions, a re-priced chain, a better route while the advertised one still stands, and a new chain from the neighbor we already route through (its own update, which it held itself) go out at once.
  • Queued updates are applied before a held route is released, so one withdrawn while the writer was blocked is dropped.
  • Only the advertisement waits. The relay's own table, fronts, and subscriptions fail over immediately. Client sessions are never held.
  • fix(moq-net): hold route updates so a withdrawal retracts once #4642's cursor hold is removed (maintainer's decision): one mechanism, 300 ms faster failover. Its mock-transport latency support stays; its regression test is superseded by the live-graph tests below.

"Still stands" is a table lookup (origin::Consumer::carries): a live, visible route covering the path with exactly the advertised chain.

Results

tests/mesh_withdraw.rs runs real lite-06 sessions over the mock transport on live's graph (LIVE, relays numbered by name), each of the 34 relays publishing and withdrawing one broadcast in turn. Link latency is each link's PoP distance at 100 km/ms (sjc-sin 136 ms), scaled. Counts sum every relay's own view after the withdrawals; a clean run is 0 resurrections and 1,156 retractions (34 x 34).

build latency resurrections publishers hunting
before #4642 none 4,975 32 / 34
main (#4642) none 624 16 / 34
main (#4642) 1x 342 16 / 34
main (#4642) 2x 16,304 23 / 34
this PR none, 1x, 2x, 4x 0 0 / 34

Choosing the value: the smallest hold that closes every publisher is 50 ms with no latency, 300 ms at 1x, 500 ms at 2x, 1 s at 4x. 1 s keeps a 3x margin over the estimate.

Failover (live_link_failure_fails_over): each publisher's relay loses every link but its slowest while it keeps publishing. Every relay gets the broadcast back. The longest any relay went with no path was 1.131 s (130 ms with no hold), so a peer left with no other path waits about the hold, and holds along the mesh run side by side, not in series.

Impact

  • Public API, breaking but unreleased: removes origin::Config::update_hold and origin::DEFAULT_UPDATE_HOLD, both added in fix(moq-net): hold route updates so a withdrawal retracts once #4642 and not yet in a release. Producer::is_peer and Consumer::carries are pub(crate).
  • Wire: none. A lost route on a cluster link is an ANNOUNCE_END now and an ANNOUNCE_START later, instead of an ANNOUNCE_RESTART.
  • Behavior: a cluster peer left with no other path sees a broadcast return about 1.1 s after a link failure; route updates to clients and local cursors are no longer delayed. Documented in doc/bin/relay/cluster.md.
  • Cost: one hash lookup per update on a cluster announce stream, plus a table walk at the path only when the advertised chain changes. No benchmark added; nothing here scales with the table or the session count. fix(moq-net): hold route updates so a withdrawal retracts once #4642's pending-set scan is gone.
  • Quest: finishes quest/m0/path-hunting.md (quest: apply the wildcard/cluster audit #4629).

Alternatives

  • Keeping fix(moq-net): hold route updates so a withdrawal retracts once #4642's cursor hold as well: also clean, but 300 ms slower failover and two mechanisms.
  • Hiding routes by the withdrawn chain or first hop: black-holes a valid failover when an intermediate link dies (moq.pro's spike).
  • A per-origin sequence number on cluster links: the complete fix, a wire change for the wip lite version.

Follow-ups

  • moq.pro: move the pin to the merge commit, deploy (user's go-ahead), and confirm about one retraction wave per ended name on Kick dev with just live announced.

Walkthrough

Relay publishers now retract eligible replaced routes immediately and delay their replacement announcements for one second. Session setup identifies relay peers, and announce handling uses the runtime clock to manage hold-down deadlines. Tests cover route updates, withdrawals, and link failures in a simulated relay mesh. Routing documentation and quest records also describe the change.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e8dc7

The replacement hold-down has no established remaining behavioral blocker. Qualify the documentation: better replacements can be delayed when the previously advertised route no longer stands.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e8dc7

The replacement lifecycle preserves withdrawal ordering and cancels replacements that are withdrawn while waiting. No new privilege or access path was identified. However, removing the shared delay changes client timing and a public configuration API, while production convergence and downstream recovery remain only partly established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A propagation failure could affect downstream relays that re-advertise routes reachable through configured peer sessions, rather than remaining isolated to one writer. The inspected scope and forwarding controls constrain eligible metadata, but production tenant, asset, and deployment extent is not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Announcement requests are scoped through the existing consumer; an out-of-scope prefix produces an empty view. Peer exclusion is applied before cursor creation. Outgoing route metadata also passes reflection checks, version-specific hop handling, and cost clamping before reaching the writer.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The hold suppresses stale replacements only when their withdrawals become available before release. One second is an operational convergence assumption, not a security or atomicity guarantee: the sender can release a route before a later withdrawal reaches its queue, and blocked transport can extend externally visible failover time.

[P2] Apply queued withdrawals before releasing held routes
rs/moq-net/src/lite/publisher.rs:918–923

The deadline wins over announced.poll_next, so the stored replacement can be advertised after it has already withdrawn. For example, block the writer while flushing the original route's END, withdraw the fallback during that blockage, then resume after HOLD_DOWN. The loop flushes END, emits and flushes the stale ACTIVE, and only afterward consumes the pending withdrawal and emits another END. This resurrects an ended broadcast despite its withdrawal reaching this relay within the hold-down, reintroducing the extra retraction wave this change targets. Reconcile queued changes or revalidate the held advertisement against current announcement state before releasing it. A paused-clock regression using SinkSend::gated should require only the original END in this scenario.

Direction/complexity: the cluster-only, wire-compatible mitigation is well scoped; the queue/map and single timer are proportionate. The fixed delay remains a convergence assumption, rather than a guarantee under arbitrary stalls.

Verification: inspected all changed files and surrounding announcement, route-table, and writer behavior. GitHub's Check, Platform, WASM, and Android runs for this SHA succeeded. No local tests or runtime reproduction were run.

Fixed in 5828ca9: the announce loop now drains queued updates before it releases a held route, so a replacement withdrawn while the writer was blocked is dropped. replacement_withdrawn_while_blocked_is_never_sent gates the writer as suggested and requires only the original END; it fails on the previous head with [END, ACTIVE, END].

On the fixed delay: agreed, it is a convergence assumption. The sweep in the description puts the closing threshold at ~300 ms on live's graph, so 1 s holds at 4x the estimated link latencies; the per-origin seqno in the wip lite version is the guarantee.

Cluster-only hold-down on a withdrawn route's replacement is a well-scoped fix for the partial-mesh hunting #4399 left open, and the live 34-relay repro plus unit coverage (including the blocked-writer case) are strong. Cannot merge as-is: it conflicts with main, which already shipped a different path-hunting fix.

Blocking

  1. Merge conflict with fix(moq-net): hold route updates so a withdrawal retracts once #4642 (already on main)
mergeable_state: dirty. Main is 2 commits ahead, including fix(moq-net): hold route updates so a withdrawal retracts once (#4642) (ef2511e101f8), which overlaps the same files (lite/publisher.rs, origin.rs, mesh_withdraw.rs, mock latency, cluster.md) with a different design: origin-cursor update_hold (default 300 ms) for every best-route change, rather than this PR's announce-stream hold (1 s) only when the advertised chain dies and a different-neighbor replacement takes over.
Rebase onto current main and choose explicitly:

Non-blocking

  1. CI not run on this head
Check / Platform / WASM / Android succeeded on 28d2318ab159 (pre–queued-update fix). For 5828ca9a1b8d only Dependabot ran (skipped). Re-run / wait for green after the rebase.

  2. Hold release trusts stored hops/cost (rs/moq-net/src/lite/publisher.rs ~920–926)
After poll_due, start advertises the held tuple without a final origin.carries (or “still active”) check. Preferring announced.poll_next before release (and replacement_withdrawn_while_blocked_is_never_sent) closes the writer-blocked resurrection case from the earlier OpenAI review — that finding is fixed. A cheap re-validate before start would still harden against any future path that leaves a held entry without a queued update.

  3. HOLD_DOWN duplicated in the integration test (rs/moq-net/tests/mesh_withdraw.rs ~HOLD_DOWN / failover bound)
The test const can drift from publisher.rs's HOLD_DOWN. Prefer one shared test-visible constant, or assert against the documented 1 s in one place only.

Earlier finding

  • Fixed: apply queued announce updates before releasing a held route (5828ca9a1b8d + replacement_withdrawn_while_blocked_is_never_sent).

Notes

  • Public API / wire: none; is_peer / carries stay pub(crate); clients never held — good.
  • Fixed 1 s delay remains a convergence assumption (same class as fix(moq-net): hold route updates so a withdrawal retracts once #4642's 300 ms); per-origin seqno on cluster links is still the complete fix.
  • After rebase, keep the LIVE-graph + link-failure tests; they are stricter than main's sample-publisher partial_mesh_withdraw_retracts_once and match the quest acceptance criteria.

The previous P2 is addressed in code. In rs/moq-net/src/lite/publisher.rs:918–929, queued announcement updates now take precedence over an expired hold; a queued withdrawal removes the held replacement before it can produce ACTIVE. The paused-clock regression at lines 2232–2250 gates the writer across both withdrawals and requires only the original END, matching the reported failure scenario.

No new actionable finding in the one-commit delta from 28d2318. Direction/complexity: the localized ordering fix reuses the existing queue and transport gate without adding another mechanism; the broader hold-down remains a latency assumption, as acknowledged.

Verification: static review of the delta, announcement cursor, hold queue, writer ordering, and gated test. I did not run tests or independently reproduce the claimed before/after result. No substantive CI result was visible for this exact head at review time; the older head's passing checks do not verify it.

Re-review after merge of main (brings in #4642 origin update_hold + #4641). Conflict with #4642 is resolved; mergeable: true. Docs now describe the two holds as complementary, which is the right call: origin's 300 ms dampens best-route changes during a withdrawal wave, and this PR's 1 s cluster announce hold still closes the resurrection case #4642 alone left open ("a relay that already retracted hearing a stale path as a new one"). No new logic bugs spotted in the resolution.

Blocking

None.

Non-blocking

  1. CI still pending on this head
Check / Test / Platform / WASM / Android are queued on 2d1418b94e78. Prior green was on 28d2318ab159 (pre–queued-update fix). Wait for green before merging.

  2. Hold release still trusts the stored hops/cost (rs/moq-net/src/lite/publisher.rs ~920–926)
After poll_due, start advertises the held tuple without a final origin.carries check. Preferring announced.poll_next before release (and replacement_withdrawn_while_blocked_is_never_sent) already covers the blocked-writer case. A cheap re-validate before start would still harden against any future path that leaves a held entry without a queued update. Unchanged from the prior review.

  3. HOLD_DOWN still duplicated in the integration test (rs/moq-net/tests/mesh_withdraw.rs ~269)
Test const can drift from publisher.rs's HOLD_DOWN. Prefer one shared test-visible constant.

  4. Docs grammar leftover from fix(moq-net): hold route updates so a withdrawal retracts once #4642 (doc/bin/relay/cluster.md)
"A relay two hops from the publisher's still holds…" reads incomplete (likely "publisher's relay"). Not introduced here, but sits in the paragraph this merge kept.

Earlier findings

  • Fixed: merge conflict / dirty state with fix(moq-net): hold route updates so a withdrawal retracts once #4642.
  • Reframed (not a bug): stacking both holds. Prior review asked to pick one; the merge + docs make them complementary, and the ~1.3 s failover cost is called out. LIVE + PRODUCTION mesh tests both remain.
  • Still open (NB): optional carries re-check on hold release; duplicated HOLD_DOWN; CI on this SHA.

Notes

  • Public API / wire unchanged; is_peer / carries stay pub(crate); clients capped at the 300 ms origin hold.
  • live_link_failure_fails_over bound (worst < 2 * HOLD_DOWN) still accommodates ~1.3 s.

[P2] Revalidate held routes when the origin cursor also delays updates
rs/moq-net/src/lite/publisher.rs:920–925

Merging #4642 makes poll_next return Pending even with a newer route queued: OriginConsumerState::scan holds updates for 300 ms. Suppose A withdraws and B enters this session's 1 s hold; 900 ms later B withdraws while a different-neighbor C remains. The cursor still considers this prefix delivered, so it holds the B→C update. At B's deadline this branch emits ACTIVE for the already-withdrawn B. When C finally reaches the loop, B is retracted again and C starts another 1 s hold. This propagates a known-stale path and adds an unnecessary retraction/failover delay.

Reconcile the pending state for the suffix or revalidate the held chain against the current origin before start. Add a paused-clock three-route regression with the default origin hold and B withdrawn near the session deadline; Held::new now sets update_hold: Duration::ZERO, so the existing unit regressions cannot cover this combination.

The previous blocked-writer/all-routes-withdrawn finding remains fixed. This is a new interaction with the merged cursor hold, making the previously suggested release-time validation concretely necessary.

Direction/complexity: the cluster-only mitigation remains scoped, and the combined failover cost is documented. Two delayed views need a current-state check at their boundary; no wire/API expansion is needed for this fix.

Verification: static review of the merge delta, current PR diff, cursor delivery state, hold/release logic, and tests. No tests or runtime reproduction run. Android succeeded for this SHA; Check, Platform, and WASM were still running.

Revalidate a held route before advertising it after the hold-down.

When the deadline fires, Hold::poll_due returns the stored hops and cost, and self.start advertises them without checking them again. The loop drains queued updates first, so a coalesced withdrawal does drop the held route. The remaining risk is the origin cursor's own update_hold (default 300 ms). If an Updated change is still held there at release time, the stored route can already be stale while the cursor has not delivered the change yet. Check origin.carries(&suffix, &hops) before start. If the check fails, keep the suffix unadvertised and let the next update decide.

Both findings on 2d1418b (OpenAI P2, CodeRabbit outside-diff) fixed in 2c33484: at the deadline a held route is checked against the table, and one that no longer stands is held again rather than sent or dropped. Dropping it, as CodeRabbit proposed, would let the cursor's later B to C change arrive as a new route and go out at once, which is the hole this PR closes. held_route_withdrawn_behind_the_cursor_hold_is_never_sent runs with the default 300 ms cursor hold and three routes, withdraws B 200 ms before the session deadline, and requires only the original END and then C after its hold; it fails without the check by advertising B.

Re-review after push fix(net): keep holding a route the cursor has not caught up on. Vs prior MERGE on 2d1418b94e78: at hold-down expiry the announce loop now re-checks origin.carries and re-arms the hold when the stored hops no longer stand, instead of advertising a route the cursor has not yet retracted. New unit test held_route_withdrawn_behind_the_cursor_hold_is_never_sent covers the three-route / default cursor-hold race. That closes the optional re-validate NB from the last review. No new correctness bugs spotted; mergeable: true.

Blocking

None.

Non-blocking

  1. CI pending on this head
Check / Test / Platform / WASM / Android are queued on 2c334849257c. Prior head 2d1418b94e78 was fully green — wait for green on this tip before merging.

  2. Re-hold resets a full HOLD_DOWN (rs/moq-net/src/lite/publisher.rs ~921–930)
After poll_due removes the entry, hold.hold treats it as new and schedules now + 1s. When the cursor was only slightly behind, the surviving replacement then inherits that fresh deadline (via the existing contains_key replace path), so advertisement can stretch toward ~2 s after the original retract — close to live_link_failure_fails_over's worst < 2 * HOLD_DOWN bound. A shorter re-arm (e.g. DEFAULT_UPDATE_HOLD) or holding the suffix without a new full window would tighten that; not wrong given the intentional “don’t drop” choice and the new test.

  3. HOLD_DOWN still duplicated (rs/moq-net/tests/mesh_withdraw.rs ~269)
Unchanged from prior reviews; test const can drift from publisher.rs.

  4. Docs grammar leftover (doc/bin/relay/cluster.md)
“A relay two hops from the publisher's still holds…” still reads incomplete. Not introduced here.

Earlier findings

  • Fixed: optional carries re-check on hold release (was NB on 2d1418b94e78).
  • Still open (NB): CI on this SHA; full-window re-arm latency; duplicated HOLD_DOWN; docs grammar.
  • Prior head’s CI green addresses the old “CI pending on 2d1418b9” note for that commit only.

Notes

  • Public API / wire unchanged; cluster-only hold; clients stay on the 300 ms origin hold.
  • Stacking both holds remains intentional and documented.

The previous P2, independently identified by CodeRabbit, is addressed in code. rs/moq-net/src/lite/publisher.rs:924–929 revalidates the held chain against the current origin before advertising it. Re-inserting the held suffix also ensures the delayed B→C cursor update goes through the hold replacement path instead of becoming an immediately advertised new route. The default-cursor-hold, three-route regression at lines 2275–2303 covers the reported ordering. The earlier blocked-writer fix remains intact.

No new actionable finding in this one-commit delta from 2d1418b94e78ac6b0b119cec9b571027faffedcf. Direction/complexity: the fix reuses the existing table lookup and hold queue without expanding the API or wire. Re-arming a full window adds failover latency when the replacement changes near expiry; this is a conservative tradeoff, and the overall fixed-delay mitigation still depends on the withdrawal-wave timing assumption.

Verification: static review of the delta, current hold/release loop, carries, cursor delivery, and regression. No local tests or runtime reproduction run. Windows, macOS, and Android checks passed for this exact SHA; Check, Test, and WASM were still running.

Decision (maintainer, 2026-10-01): remove #4642's 300 ms announce-cursor hold in this PR so only the cluster-link hold-down remains. Done in e8dc7d6: origin::Config::update_hold, DEFAULT_UPDATE_HOLD, the cursor's pending-update scan, and the clock's driver wake that served it are gone; #4642's mock latency stays, and its five-publisher test is superseded by the live-graph tests. The release-time revalidation from 2c33484 went with it: with no cursor hold, an idle cursor means a held route is current.

Re-measured on this head: 0 resurrections and 0 of 34 publishers hunting at no latency and 1x, 2x, 4x the estimated latency; the failover test's longest outage is 1.131 s. just check and just test interop --all pass.

MERGE

Reviewed head: e8dc7d6994017e9bb88cc873e43204ec90ea8ecd

Re-review after push revert(net): drop the announce cursor's update hold (#4642). Vs prior MERGE on 2c334849257c: removes origin::Config::update_hold / DEFAULT_UPDATE_HOLD, the cursor Held/scan machinery, and the clock register_driver/try_now path that only existed to anchor those holds. Session-level cluster HOLD_DOWN remains the hunting fix; the cursor hold is no longer stacked under it. That matches this PR's own Alternatives note and simplifies failover (~1 s instead of ~1.3 s). Docs and the carries re-hold (only meaningful with a lagging cursor) are updated accordingly. No new correctness bugs spotted; mergeable: true.

Blocking

None.

Non-blocking

  1. CI pending on this head
Check / Test / Platform / WASM / Android are still in progress on e8dc7d699401. Wait for green before merging — this tip deletes a fair amount of origin/timer code and the PRODUCTION mesh test, so the LIVE withdraw + failover suite is the main confidence check.

  2. PR description is stale
Body still describes stacking both holds, ~1.3 s failover, and "clients never held past 300 ms", and lists dropping fix(moq-net): hold route updates so a withdrawal retracts once #4642 as a follow-up. This commit is that follow-up. Worth a short body refresh so review/merge notes match the tip.

  3. Client announce streams no longer coalesce updates
Removing the origin cursor hold means every announce consumer (including non-peer / client sessions) sees best-route changes immediately. Hunting risk is cluster-only and still covered by HOLD_DOWN; clients may just observe more intermediate Updated events during a withdrawal wave. Acceptable and intentional, but a behavioral change vs fix(moq-net): hold route updates so a withdrawal retracts once #4642-on-main.

  4. HOLD_DOWN still duplicated (rs/moq-net/tests/mesh_withdraw.rs ~269 vs lite/publisher.rs ~53)
Unchanged; test const can drift from the production constant.

Earlier findings

  • Fixed / moot: full-window re-arm after carries re-check (code removed with the cursor hold); docs grammar ("A relay two hops from the publisher's…") rewritten.
  • Still open (NB): CI on this SHA; duplicated HOLD_DOWN.
  • Dropped with the feature (expected): held_route_withdrawn_behind_the_cursor_hold_is_never_sent, try_next_delivers_a_held_update, a_changed_route_waits_out_the_hold, and partial_mesh_withdraw_retracts_once (PRODUCTION). LIVE live_withdraw_retracts_once_* + live_link_failure_fails_over remain as the mesh coverage.

Notes

  • Public Config::update_hold / DEFAULT_UPDATE_HOLD removed; PR treats them as unreleased (fix(moq-net): hold route updates so a withdrawal retracts once #4642). Wire unchanged; cluster-only hold kept.
  • Failover bound in live_link_failure_fails_over stays worst < 2 * HOLD_DOWN; without the 300 ms cursor hold the observed worst should land closer to one window.

No new actionable bugs found in the one-commit delta from 2c334849257c83e8c27fa8ed5a4118e0e44bdc57.

The previous delayed-cursor P2 no longer applies: origin.rs:4376–4399 now drains pending updates without a cursor timer, before publisher.rs:918–929 releases a held route. Removing that guard and its cursor-hold-specific test is consistent with removing the underlying delay. The earlier blocked-writer ordering fix and its gated regression remain intact.

Direction/complexity: retaining one cluster-link hold is simpler and avoids stacked delays; client/local updates are immediate again. The removal of the unreleased update_hold field and constant is documented, with no wire-format change. The one-second mitigation still assumes the withdrawal wave settles within its window.

Verification: static review of all eight changed files, surrounding cursor/driver behavior, and retained mesh tests. No local tests or runtime reproduction run; this environment lacks the Rust/Nix/just toolchain. Android passed for this exact SHA; Check/Test, Platform, and WASM were still running.

On hold (maintainer, 2026-09-30): the hold-down breaks seamless failover. A cluster peer whose only path ran through the relay gets ANNOUNCE_END, its front ends on best: None (model/front.rs), and its subscribers drop for about 1.1 s even though the relay keeps serving the broadcast. Waiting for per-origin sequence numbers on cluster links in the wip lite version instead.

Tried and rejected: holding the replacement without retracting (keep the old advertisement through the hold, END only once nothing stands). It brings hunting back on the live graph (for example [Updated, Retracted, Announced, Retracted, Announced, Retracted]), because stale advertisements keep each other's replacements alive past their holds, and the worst failover gap stays at 1.131 s. The immediate END is what carries the withdrawal across the mesh, so the announce side can't avoid it without the wire change.
