fix(fetch): inherit the URL fragment across redirects - #309
Prerender already returns the fragment: Puppeteer v24 (#13425) appends urlFragment to request.url() and response.url(). This PR adds tests so it stays that way, and fixes what was still different in fetch mode.
src/index.js: a beforeRedirect hook makes a Location with no fragment inherit the one from the request (RFC 9110 §10.2.2). User gotOpts.hooks still run, after it.
src/html.js: the fallback <title> no longer includes the fragment.
Measurable outcome
url, redirects and the canonical link now match in fetch and prerender mode:

How it was tested
test/url.js runs the fragment cases in both modes against a local server, and test/html/add-head.js covers the title.
Local files run: url, redirects, index, mode, html/*, office, pdf, shadow-dom. Result: 121 passed, 1 skipped (the skip is already in test/mode.js). Lint and tsc pass. The full suite was not run locally.
Reverting src/ fails 3 of the new tests. Reverting just the empty-fragment check and the non-array hook handling fails the 2 tests covering them.
A separate review tried to break the fix against real Chrome (cross-host, relative and multi-hop redirects, encoded fragments, retries, cache, PDF and office responses). Its findings are fixed here, apart from the known limitation below.
Known limitation
A malformed percent sequence in a fragment (/one#100%) still fails in fetch mode, because got runs decodeURI on the whole URL. It fails the same way without this PR, and prerender handles it.
Consumers need Puppeteer >= 24 for the prerender behavior. puppeteer is only a dev dependency here, so html-get can't enforce that.
Medium Risk
Changes final url, redirect metadata, and canonical href behavior for fetch requests, which downstream metadata consumers rely on, though behavior is spec-driven and heavily tested.
Overview
Aligns fetch mode with prerender for URL fragments on redirects and fixes fallback page titles that incorrectly included #... segments.
Fetch now registers a beforeRedirect hook that copies the request fragment onto the redirect target when Location has none (per RFC 9110), while still honoring an explicit destination fragment—including an empty #. Custom gotOpts.hooks.beforeRedirect handlers run afterward and see the updated URL; falsy hook values no longer break the chain.
The generated <title> fallback strips the fragment before deriving the basename, so hashes are not treated as filenames.
New integration tests cover fragment preservation, multi-hop redirects, canonical links, and hook ordering in both fetch and prerender modes.

Bug Fixes
Page titles generated from URLs now ignore fragments, retaining the expected page name or hostname.
Redirected URLs inherit a fragment from the redirect destination when the original URL has none. An existing original fragment is preserved, while a destination fragment—including an empty one—takes precedence.
Existing redirect hooks continue to run, and other request hooks continue to handle retries and errors during redirects.
Prerender keeps the fragment since Puppeteer v24, which appends
urlFragment to request.url() and response.url().
Fetch mode dropped it when a redirect Location had no fragment, so
/one#hello -> /target returned /target while a browser lands on
/target#hello. RFC 9110 section 10.2.2 requires inheriting it, and an
empty fragment in Location counts as present, hence the href check.
The fallback title no longer includes the fragment.

Redirect processing preserves URL fragments when redirect targets omit them. Fallback HTML titles use URLs without fragments. An explicit pdfMeta.title still takes precedence.
Changes: URL Fragment Handling

Summary
Redirect fragment inheritance src/index.js, test/url.js
fetch adds a fragment-inheritance hook before existing beforeRedirect hooks. Tests cover fragment handling in fetch and prerender modes, and Got hook behavior during redirects and retries.
Fallback title derivation src/html.js, test/html/add-head.js
Fallback titles derive from the URL without its fragment. An explicit pdfMeta.title takes precedence. Tests cover URLs with paths and root URLs.

Explanation
Issue #209 requires the url field to keep a URL fragment that remains in the browser address bar after load. This includes redirects, shortlinks, and HTTPS redirects. The reviewed head meets this for both modes.
Prerender: the PR states that Puppeteer v24 (puppeteer/puppeteer#13425) already appends urlFragment to request.url() and response.url(). The PR adds tests in test/url.js for this behavior. No prerender source change is needed.
Fetch: src/index.js adds inheritRequestFragment as the first beforeRedirect hook. When the redirect Location has no #, the helper copies the fragment from response.url onto the redirect target. When Location contains # (including an empty fragment), the helper leaves it unchanged. This matches RFC 9110 §10.2.2 and the PR's expected outputs for /one#hello to /two to /target, and for /own#hello to /target#own.
The PR reports new fetch and prerender tests in test/url.js covering these cases, plus canonical-link and redirects values. I did not open test/url.js during this review. The test coverage claim rests on the PR description and the change summary.
Known gap, not required by #209: a malformed percent sequence in a fragment (for example /one#100%) still fails in fetch mode because Got applies decodeURI. The issue does not mention this case. The PR reports that this failure exists without the PR.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed diff contains four changed areas. Each one connects to #209.
src/index.js: the inheritRequestFragment helper and the hooks.beforeRedirect wiring implement fragment inheritance across redirects. The code keeps existing opts.hooks entries with ...opts.hooks. It runs user beforeRedirect hooks after the helper. It uses opts.hooks?.beforeRedirect || [] and concat, so falsy and non-array hook values do not break the chain.
src/html.js: path.basename(url.split('#')[0]) changes the fallback <title>. Once fragments reach url in both modes, the title would otherwise use a hash segment as a filename. The change is a direct consequence of preserving the fragment.
test/html/add-head.js: covers the title change.
test/url.js: covers the fragment, redirect, canonical-link, and hook-order behavior that #209 requires.
The PR adds no unrelated feature, dependency, or refactor. The source diff is small: about 10 lines in src/index.js and 1 line in src/html.js.

Assert a successful response in the fragment test.
The keep the fragment test still passes when the fetch request fails. On a fetch error in fetch mode, the fallback returns the input URL with empty html. The canonical link is then built from that same URL, so both assertions pass without a server response.
The redirect tests catch this fallback because they assert the final url. This test is the only one that covers a fetch-mode fragment without a redirect. Asserting the status code closes that gap. A successful fetch returns the server status, which is 200 for this fixture. The fallback returns undefined on a network error.

Replacing beforeRedirect still copies the other got hooks. Lock init,
beforeRequest, beforeRetry, afterResponse, and beforeError so dropping
one fails, and note why an empty fragment must not be inherited.

Update the beforeRequest hook and assertion in the redirect test to record each
request URL and verify that the redirected /flaky request receives the hook,
rather than only asserting that the hook ran for the initial request.
