Baseline benchmark for html-get, fully offline. No library changes.
Cases
Each case runs a fixed workload per sample, 7 samples after one warm-up, median wall ms. Every sample asserts its output, so a broken path fails the job instead of looking fast.
Case
Work per sample
Asserts
Why
html rewriteUrls off
2 renders of a generated 1MB page through src/html.js then $.html()
relative links untouched, canonical added
The step every getHTML() result goes through: cheerio parse, head upsert, serialize
html rewriteUrls on
same page, rewriteUrls: true
links and css url() made absolute
Adds the per-tag URL rewrite and css url scan, the costliest option
pdf extract
20 extractPdf() calls on a generated 3 page, 18KB pdf
title and author
PDF metadata path (unpdf + layout heuristics)
cold require
node -e "require(root)" minus node -e 0, per sample
spawn exit 0
Startup cost paid by every CLI run and serverless cold start
The 1MB page mixes every tag in html-urls TAGS (a, img, iframe, form, input, video, source, blockquote), relative and absolute links, fragments, mailto, inline style urls and a <style> block. The PDF is written byte by byte at bench start (Helvetica text, Info dict), since the repo's PDF fixtures are downloaded, not committed.
Not covered: hasShadowDOM is a module-local function in src/index.js, not exported or requireable, so it is not measured on its own.

Whole run takes about 4s. The laptop had a load average near 10 during these runs (other sessions), and a few reruns drifted up to ~20% on every case at once; CI numbers are the reference.
Removed
benchmark/mupdf/ and benchmark/package.json: the mupdf fixtures were never committed (ENOENT .../fixtures), generate.js needs pdfkit, which root pnpm install does not install (no workspace), and the bench needs a mutool binary. benchmark/get-content-type still runs offline and is kept.
Tested
node benchmark/index.js three times locally (table above), exit 0
npm test (lint + ava): 141 passed, 54 skipped (PDF fixture tests skip without downloaded fixtures, same as base)
Low Risk
Changes are limited to CI workflow, benchmark scripts, and gitignore; no library or runtime behavior changes.
Overview
Adds continuous performance benchmarking in CI and a single offline runner at benchmark/index.js, wired via pnpm benchmark / node benchmark/index.js.
The new suite measures median wall time (7 samples + warm-up) for HTML processing with rewriteUrls on/off, extractPdf on a generated PDF, and cold require startup—each run asserts output so regressions fail the job. Results go to benchmark-output.json; the workflow posts PR comments via benchmark-action/github-action-benchmark and caches history on master pushes.
Removed the old benchmark/mupdf/ harness (missing fixtures, extra deps, mutool binary). .gitignore now excludes benchmark-output.json and cache/.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added performance benchmarks for HTML processing with and without URL rewriting, PDF extraction, and module loading. Results include median and range timings.
Benchmark results are reported on pushes and pull requests, with benchmark data saved for pushes to the master branch.
Added a command to run benchmarks locally; failed runs are reported as errors.
Cases (RUNS 7, median wall ms, one warm-up, all offline):
- html rewriteUrls off: 2 renders of a generated 1MB page through src/html.js + $.html()
- html rewriteUrls on: same page with html and css url rewriting
- pdf extract: 20 extractPdf calls on a generated 3 page pdf
- cold require: node -e "require(root)" minus a node -e 0 baseline
Removes benchmark/mupdf and benchmark/package.json: its fixtures were
never committed, generate.js needs pdfkit which root install does not
provide, and it needs a mutool binary. benchmark/get-content-type still
runs offline and is kept.

Walkthrough
Adds a deterministic benchmark runner for HTML rendering, URL rewriting, PDF extraction, and cold module loading. It replaces the prior MuPDF benchmark scripts. A GitHub Actions workflow runs the runner on pushes to master and pull requests, reports results against cached data, and saves benchmark data on pushes to master.
Changes: Benchmark runner and CI workflow
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Build and measure benchmark cases benchmark/index.js, benchmark/mupdf/*, benchmark/package.json
Adds deterministic HTML and PDF inputs, four benchmark cases, warmups, seven timed runs, and JSON reporting. Removes the previous MuPDF fixture generator, benchmark script, and benchmark package manifest.
Connect the runner to the workflow package.json, .github/workflows/benchmark.yml, .gitignore
Adds the benchmark package script and a workflow that runs the benchmark, compares results with cached data, and saves data only on pushes to master. Ignores generated output and cache data.

The workflow still exposes write access while running installed and benchmark code, and fork pull requests receive no benchmark comparison. These should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging.

The fork guard is appropriate for the current comment-always: true configuration because fork pull_request tokens have read-only permissions. However, fork contributors currently receive only the median and range from the job log, not the comparison with cached data. This is an optional reporting enhancement, not a major functional correctness issue.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Make the benchmark script compatible with the declared Node.js range.
package.json allows Node.js 10, but the numeric separator on this line prevents that runtime from parsing the script. The ?? expression on Line 176 and process.hrtime.bigint() on Line 155 also exclude older supported releases. As a result, npm run benchmark cannot start on part of the declared runtime range. Use compatible syntax and a timing fallback, or declare a separate minimum Node.js version for the benchmark command. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
