Intermittent checks failures on unrelated PRs come from three test setup races and a product race in the Access panel.

  • Overview retry: the one-shot CDP failure sometimes never reaches the page; the CI failure has all 25 rows loaded and no failure button. Inject the Show more failure at browser fetch, and explicitly gate the real reconcile until Try again is queued.
  • Download reload/resume: the browser helper applies Boolean to an unresolved Promise, so asynchronous OPFS predicates succeed immediately. Global throttling also slows the app shell and service-worker cache fill, and navigation/completion checks can observe the outgoing document or an unfinished index write. Await predicates, throttle only the media request, wait for a real worker flush acknowledgement and the new document, and await persisted completion before hashing/asserting the index.
  • Keyframe-index lease: a one-second sleep races a 300 ms lease and discarded worker errors, while the assertion watches an unnecessary duplicate job. Hold the scan's actual index read until its lease advances, using the normal production lease, then assert completion on its first attempt and no worker errors. This directly proves renewal without requiring CI to schedule a timer within 300 ms.
  • Access picker: the rule form is interactive before its initial rules read finishes. When the response replaces two loading rows with the empty state between mouse-down and mouse-up, the option moves upward by 60 px. Mouse-up misses “Shows”, leaving the combobox open until the select-item/combobox-item close assertion times out. Keep the add-rule fields in their existing loading skeleton until the first read settles, in both subject and object modes. Ordinary reloads keep the form available, and a failed read still exposes the form and retry. The Group browser test now holds the real response, asserts the picker is unavailable while it is pending, then verifies selection enables Add rule and completes the rule-writing journey. No timeout increases or retries.

The Access failure appears in run 39566978962 and run 39568154047. The controlled local reproduction records pointer-down on “Shows” at y=461, then pointer-up at the same coordinate after the option has moved from top=445 to top=385. Focus stays on the page body.

CPU stress uses two SHA-256 load processes and test processes pinned to the same two cores. Round 1 results below list passing runs:

Test Before After
Overview retry 20/20 20/20
Download reload/resume 12/20 20/20
Keyframe-index lease 20/20 20/20

The overview and lease flakes did not reproduce in the 20-run local baseline. The download baseline reproduced the 180-second timeout and premature OPFS/index assertions.

For Access, the unforced Group journey passed 40/40 locally. A temporary CDP probe made the race reproducible by holding the initial rulesForSubject response and releasing it between real mouse press/release events if the form was already interactive. A two-second fallback releases the response when the fixed form waits for it. Each mode ran 40 times against the same built app before and after the product fix; builds did not overlap the loops. Results list passing runs:

Access first-selection probe Before After
Without added CPU load 1/40 40/40
With CPU load 7/40 40/40

All 72 controlled baseline failures matched CI's exact open-menu timeout. The permanent held-response regression was also observed failing against the old build before passing against the fix.

Validation: bun run lint passes (nine existing CSS warnings); bun run check passes with zero errors or warnings; all three Access browser tests pass. The full bun run test passes: 2,032 tests, with three S3 skips, using four server workers against an isolated test Postgres.

Closes #238

Made with GPT-6.1-Sol using Codex in T3 Code; Claude Opus 5.5 implemented the Access panel product change.

Wait for async browser predicates, flushed download bytes, the reloaded document and the persisted completion index. Keep media throttling away from the app shell. Inject the overview failure at fetch and hold the real index read until its lease renews; no duplicate job gets to take a victory lap.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update asynchronous browser predicate waiting and replace timing-based checks in download, overview retry, access-panel loading, and index lease tests with explicit synchronization.

Changes: Test synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Browser wait and download synchronization
apps/server/src/api/browser-testing.ts, apps/server/src/api/downloads-browser.test.ts
Page.waitFor now awaits asynchronous predicates. The download test uses media-specific throttling, flush acknowledgement, reload completion, and download index completion checks.
Retry and access-panel synchronization
apps/server/src/api/overview-browser.test.ts, apps/server/src/api/access-browser.test.ts, apps/web/src/lib/components/admin/AccessPanel.svelte
The overview test controls fetch failure and reconciliation release from the page. The access-panel test verifies loading before resuming rules data, then checks the enabled add-rule state. The form reports loading level 3 when rule data is unavailable without an error.
Index lease synchronization
apps/server/src/libraries/jobs.test.ts
The test blocks the index read, verifies lease renewal, resumes processing, and checks successful first-attempt completion with cleared pending state and no errors.

Explanation

The changes satisfy the coding requirements in [#238]. The overview test controls the injected failure and retry request. The download test awaits asynchronous predicates, media throttling, document readiness, worker flush acknowledgement, and persisted completion. The keyframe-index test blocks the actual read, checks lease renewal, and verifies first-attempt completion and worker errors. The PR reports repeated CPU-stressed results for all three tests.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes to apps/server/src/api/access-browser.test.ts and apps/web/src/lib/components/admin/AccessPanel.svelte address the Access panel and Group journey. Issue [#238] is limited to the overview retry, download reload/resume, and keyframe-index lease checks. The linked issue specifies no additional scope. These Access changes are unrelated to that scope.

Resolution

Remove the Access panel product change and its browser-test changes from this pull request, or link them to a separate active issue with coding requirements.

Reviewed changes: Reviewed all four files, including the synchronization changes against the download store, OPFS worker, overview request queue, and job lease implementation.

  • Browser predicates: Page.waitFor now awaits asynchronous results before testing truthiness.
  • Download recovery: Media-only throttling and explicit flush, navigation, and index-persistence waits replace timing assumptions while preserving range-request and byte-integrity assertions.
  • Overview retry: Fetch-level failure injection and a gated reconcile preserve the queued retry scenario.
  • Index lease: The test observes renewal on the scan-enqueued job and checks first-attempt completion without worker errors.

Validation passed: bun run check, Biome checks for the four changed files, 26 download unit tests, and direct Chrome smoke checks for synchronous/asynchronous predicates, rejection retries, timeout behavior, and CDP rule support. The three database-backed integration tests were not rerun locally because DATABASE_URL is unset and FFmpeg/FFprobe are unavailable on PATH.

The initial rules response replaces two skeleton rows with one empty row.
If it lands between pointerdown and pointerup, the picker moves 60 px and
never receives the selection. No more moving targets: keep the form in its
existing loading state until the first read settles.

Hold that response in the Group browser journey to prove the picker stays
unavailable during loading, then verify selection enables Add rule.
Controlled loops reproduced 39/40 idle and 33/40 stressed failures before
the fix; all 40 attempts in each mode pass afterwards.

✅ No new issues found.

Reviewed changes: Reviewed the Access picker fix and regression coverage added since the previous review at fea20f0.

  • Gated initial editing: Kept the Add a rule fields in their loading skeleton until the initial rules read settles in both subject and object modes, while preserving availability during ordinary reloads and after a failed read.
  • Added deterministic coverage: Held the Group page's real rules response, asserted the picker was unavailable while pending, then verified selection enabled Add rule and the rule-writing journey completed.

Validation passed: bun run check, Biome checks for both incremental files, the web production build, and all three Access browser tests against an isolated Postgres (21 assertions). The unchanged overview, download, and index-lease integration tests were not rerun in this review.

Assert that the restored file is incomplete before waiting for Resume.

downloadFlushed can acknowledge the final flush. The file can therefore be complete while index.json still says downloading. Resume then sends bytes=${restoredSize}-, and store.ts accepts the exact-end 416 response as completion. The Range-header assertion passes without a post-reload transfer. If the index write wins first, the Resume download wait can time out.

Read the restored size before waiting for the control, and require it to be smaller than the source file.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use one reconciliation gate and one release handle.

Every metadataGapItems request after the injected failure enters the wrapper. The reconciliation request and the retry request therefore create separate unresolved promises. The retry overwrites window.releaseGapReconcile, so the release at line 607 can unblock only the retry. The reconciliation request can remain blocked, and the wait for 25 items can hang.

Create the gate once and reuse its stable release handle:
