Resolves #9214.

Extracts containsActiveItems and isItemActive into
@docusaurus/theme-common/internal, applies active highlighting to
DropdownNavbarItemDesktop when the dropdown or one of its child
items matches the current pathname, and adds unit tests to verify
the expected behavior.

Pre-flight checklist

  • I have read the Contributing Guidelines on pull requests.
  • I have written unit tests to verify the new behavior.
  • If this is a new API or substantial change, the PR has an accompanying issue and the maintainers have approved my working plan.

Motivation

When navigating to a page linked within a desktop navbar dropdown,
the parent dropdown does not appear active, even when one of its
child items matches the current pathname.

This results in inconsistent visual feedback and makes it harder
for users to identify the active section of the website.

This change brings the desktop dropdown's active-state behavior
in line with the existing mobile navigation behavior.

Solution

  • Extracts containsActiveItems and isItemActive into the shared
    @docusaurus/theme-common/internal utilities.
  • Updates DropdownNavbarItemDesktop to detect active child items
and apply the appropriate active styling.
  • Preserves custom active-state overrides and custom active class names.
  • Reuses the shared utilities in the mobile dropdown implementation
    to avoid duplicated logic.

Test Plan

  • Tests active highlighting when a child item's route matches the
    current pathname.
  • Tests route matching with trailing slashes.
  • Tests activeBasePath and activeBaseRegex behavior.
  • Tests nested dropdown items.
  • Tests inactive states when no child item matches.
  • Tests custom isActive callbacks and activeClassName values.

📝 Walkthrough

Navbar dropdowns now determine active state from the current route, active child items, or a custom callback. Shared utilities provide route matching for desktop and mobile dropdowns. Tests cover route matching, nested items, callbacks, and location data.

Changes: Dropdown Active-State Detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared navbar activity matching
packages/docusaurus-theme-common/src/utils/navbarUtils.tsx, packages/docusaurus-theme-common/src/internal.ts, packages/docusaurus-theme-common/src/utils/__tests__/navbarUtils.test.ts
Added utilities to match items by route, active base path, regular expression, custom callback, or nested items. Exported the utilities and added tests for matching and item splitting.
Dropdown active-state integration
packages/docusaurus-theme-classic/src/theme/NavbarItem/DropdownNavbarItem/Desktop/index.tsx, packages/docusaurus-theme-classic/src/theme/NavbarItem/DropdownNavbarItem/Mobile/index.tsx, packages/docusaurus-theme-classic/src/theme/NavbarItem/__tests__/DropdownNavbarItem.test.tsx, vitest.config.ts
Desktop and mobile dropdowns use shared activity detection and router location data. Desktop links apply the computed active state. Tests cover route matching, custom callbacks, active classes, and query parameters. The Vitest theme alias now resolves to repository source files.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Low

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1991d

Nested callbacks retain route and query information, and explicit parent overrides behave as intended. No identified issue blocks merging after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1991d

The shared matching logic changes navigation highlighting and dropdown expansion. The inspected paths do not turn route information into executable code, change navigation destinations, or grant additional authority. No material security risk was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The observed propagation is across desktop and mobile navbar rendering in sites using these components. The inspected outputs affect presentation and local interaction state, not tenant identity, credentials, data-store access, or service privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Route data is the matching input. Regex patterns come from activeBaseRegex props, and custom behavior comes from function-valued isActive props; the helper does not compile route text as code. Regex evaluation against pathnames predates this PR, although the shared helper adds callers and recursive traversal.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing state lifecycle remains component-local: desktop closes on outside interaction and removes its listeners on cleanup; mobile initializes collapse state from activity, expands on a transition to active, and permits manual toggling. The comparison does not introduce a persistent or privileged multi-step transition in these components.

Explanation

Issue #9214 requires a desktop dropdown to appear active when its own route or a child route matches. DropdownNavbarItemDesktop now uses isItemActive and containsActiveItems, then applies the configured active class. The reported tests cover child routes, nested items, path variants, custom matchers, and inactive states.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #9214. The shared utility extraction, mobile reuse, desktop active-state logic, related tests, and Vitest alias update support the navbar behavior or its test execution. No unrelated product behavior is identified.
