Summary

  • Keep an ACP session/prompt open across Gemini 429 / RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED instead of failing the parent agent loop immediately.
  • Backoff uses provider retryDelay / retry-in / Retry-After when present, otherwise 2s…60s exponential, capped by the remaining per-turn timeout (or --quota-retry-max-wait-seconds).
  • After a failed attempt that already has an agy conversation ID, retry with a continue cue rather than replaying the user prompt. Still return ACP -32003 after 5 attempts, with no virtual-context fallback.

Test plan

  • go test ./...
  • Merge, tag v0.1.9, refresh the local wrapper pin used by Python LIP
  • Confirm a mid-session 429 streams a waiting notice, then continues instead of breaking the Cursor/LIP turn

Made with Cursor

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added automatic retries for provider quota and rate-limit errors during responses.
    • Added configurable retry attempts and maximum wait times through environment variables and CLI options.
    • Added progress notices, continuation handling, cancellation support, and timeout-aware retry behavior.
    • Added support for parsing provider-suggested retry delays.
  • Documentation

    • Documented retry behavior, configuration options, backoff limits, and fallback handling.

Keep the ACP prompt open across Gemini quota errors: wait using retry-after or exponential backoff, resume the same agy conversation, and only return -32003 after the attempt budget is exhausted.

Review Change Stack

Walkthrough

The change adds native provider-limit retries for ACP turns. It parses retry delays, applies bounded backoff, supports configuration through environment variables and CLI flags, preserves conversation state, and documents and tests the retry flow.

Changes

Quota retry flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retry policy and configuration
internal/agy/retry.go, internal/agy/retry_test.go, internal/config/config.go, internal/config/config_test.go, .release-files
Retry-delay parsing and provider-limit backoff are added. Retry attempts and maximum wait values are configurable through environment variables and CLI flags. Tests cover parsing, limits, budgets, and non-quota errors.
ACP retry orchestration
internal/acp/agent.go, internal/agy/runner.go
AgyAgent retries quota failures within a shared deadline. It sends retry notices, supports cancellation, preserves conversation snapshots and IDs, continues existing conversations, and avoids fallback for provider-limit failures.
Retry validation and documentation
internal/acp/agent_test.go, README.md
ACP tests cover existing and first-turn retries, backoff, continuation prompts, and streamed conversation IDs. README documents retry behavior and configuration options.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0b2ee

Retry handling can continue past the per-turn deadline and disregard explicit retry-wait settings, causing requests to outlive their intended limits or apply the wrong backoff cap. The PR is not merge-ready until these bounded timeout and configuration issues are fixed or explicitly accepted.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Recalculate and enforce the turn deadline after each failed attempt.

remaining is captured before Line 245. If that call runs for nearly the full turn timeout and returns a provider-limit error, Line 256 still calculates the wait from the old budget. Line 271 then sleeps on the unbounded parent context and can start another attempt after turnDeadline.

Create a child context with turnDeadline, use it for execution and sleeping, and recalculate remaining after each failed call before selecting a retry wait.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Keep maxWait as the final upper bound.

If maxWait is one second, Line 125 sets wait to one second. Lines 134-138 then increase it to two seconds. This violates AGY_QUOTA_RETRY_MAX_WAIT_SECONDS. Do not reapply the two-second minimum after a positive configured cap.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Allow an explicit CLI zero to override the environment value.

0 means “remaining turn timeout”, but these lines treat it as unset. If AGY_QUOTA_RETRY_MAX_WAIT_SECONDS=60 and the user passes --quota-retry-max-wait-seconds 0, the effective cap remains 60 seconds. Track whether the flag was supplied, then apply its value including zero. Add a test for an environment cap overridden by CLI zero.
