This repository provides an automated build chain to create a modern, Unraid-compatible Docker container for Beyond Compare 5.
It wraps the official Beyond Compare Linux package inside LinuxServer's highly optimized baseimage-kasmvnc (Ubuntu Noble), providing a fast, sharp, and feature-rich web GUI accessible directly from your browser.
- The repository hosts no proprietary code or copyrighted image assets.
- GitHub Actions dynamically configures the official Scooter Software APT repository during the build to ensure the absolute latest v5 release is always installed.
- The automated pipeline builds the container, fetches the official Beyond Compare logo for the WebUI, and pushes it to your personal Docker Hub account.
- You apply your own valid license key through the WebUI, which is saved safely to your local Unraid array.
To compile this image and push it to your own Docker Hub account, follow these steps:
- Create a free account on Docker Hub.
- Create a new Public Repository named
beyondcompare. - Go to Account Settings > Personal Access Tokens and generate a new token with "Read & Write" permissions. Copy this token.
- Fork or clone this repository to your own GitHub account.
- In your GitHub repository, go to Settings > Secrets and variables > Actions.
- Create the following two New repository secrets:
DOCKERHUB_USERNAME: Your exact Docker Hub username.DOCKERHUB_TOKEN: The Access Token you copied from Docker Hub.
- Go to the Actions tab in your GitHub repository.
- Select the Docker Image CI workflow on the left.
- Click Run workflow.
GitHub will now spin up a virtual environment, pull the latest KasmVNC base image, fetch the newest Beyond Compare 5 package via APT, compile the Docker container, and push the finished latest tag to your Docker Hub account.
Note: This pipeline is also scheduled to run automatically every Sunday at 02:00 UTC. This ensures your container is always up to date with the latest OS security patches, KasmVNC updates, and Beyond Compare releases without requiring any manual intervention.
To make this container behave like a native Unraid application (with an icon, predefined ports, and variable descriptions), you need to use the provided XML template.
- Download the
beyond-compare.xmlfile from this repository. - Place the XML file on your Unraid flash drive in the following directory:
/boot/config/plugins/dockerMan/templates-user/ - In the Unraid WebGUI, go to the Docker tab and click Add Container.
- Select
BeyondComparefrom the Template dropdown at the top. - Important: Change the Repository field to point to your newly built image:
your-dockerhub-username/beyondcompare:latest - Click Apply.
/config: Maps to yourappdatashare. This stores your Beyond Compare license key and session settings permanently./storage: Maps to your Unraid array (e.g.,/mnt/user/). This grants the container access to the files you want to compare.
Once the container is running:
- Open the WebUI via the Unraid Docker tab (default port
3000). - Inside Beyond Compare, click Help > Enter Key...
- Paste your valid Beyond Compare 5 license key.
Because /config is mapped to your Unraid array, your registration will persist across container reboots and image updates.

Beyond Compare (Proprietary): This image distributes the stock, un-activated evaluation version of Beyond Compare 5. During the build process, the official Beyond Compare icon is downloaded directly from Scooter Software's servers to brand the WebUI. In compliance with the Beyond Compare 5 EULA, no license keys or copyrighted assets are included or distributed within this repository. Users are solely responsible for inputting their own valid license key via the WebUI for long-term use. This repository is independent and not officially affiliated with Scooter Software.
