What changes

Before: the server asked GitHub at start and every 12 hours, so a new release could take up to half a day to appear in the settings, and with it the update button.

After: the version card in the settings has a Check for updates button. It asks GitHub right away; if a newer release is out, the version notice and the update button appear as usual, otherwise it says that Lorewarden is up to date or that GitHub could not be reached. The button shows only when the server checks for releases at all (not for builds from source or with LOREWARDEN_UPDATE_CHECK=off), and only while no newer release is known.

How: watchForUpdates now returns a watcher with check() besides stop(). The server offers it as POST /api/updates/check behind the usual game master access and answers repeated presses within a minute from the last result, since GitHub allows few unauthenticated requests. UpdateInfo.canCheck tells the app whether to show the button. docs/self-hosting.md mentions the button.

Checked in the browser against the real GitHub API, light and dark, desktop and 390 px.

Checklist

  • pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck and pnpm test pass
  • New user-facing text has English and German strings
  • No protected content, personal data or API keys

The server asks GitHub at start and every 12 hours, so a new release
could take half a day to show up. The button checks right away, at
most once a minute, and says when Lorewarden is up to date or GitHub
cannot be reached.
