Summary

  • Fix startup crash-loops on hosts with IPv6 disabled on loopback. Cross-home owner discovery now checks each concrete loopback address with a synchronous ephemeral bind and excludes only an address whose bind reports a known address/family-unavailable error.
  • Preserve startup refusal for timeouts on available or unknown families, unknown bind failures, and unregistered live listeners. Registered live owners on either family still require identity and attestation checks and make the new process a sibling.
  • Keep route-level ENETUNREACH indeterminate after review; a dedicated regression verifies that it cannot hide a live IPv6 owner. Only EADDRNOTAVAIL, EAFNOSUPPORT, and EPROTONOSUPPORT from the bind check permit exclusion.
  • Add focused regression coverage, register the new test in both layout maps, and update startup documentation and the runtime contract.

Closes #7258

Verification

  • bun install — passed.
  • bun run typecheck — passed.
  • Bun 1.4.3: bun test --isolate tests/cli/cross-home-loopback-family.test.ts tests/cli/sibling-home-client-sync.test.ts tests/server/proxy-liveness.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts — 204 pass, 0 fail, 1,021 assertions.
  • Regression sensitivity: removing the unavailable-family exclusion makes the reported IPv4-refusal/IPv6-timeout startup case fail with the original ownership error; restored code passes. Restoring the ENETUNREACH exclusion also makes the live IPv6-owner regression fail, confirming that the binder-error branch is exercised.
  • bun run structure:check and bun run privacy:scan — passed.
  • cd docs-site && bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build — passed; 577 pages and 81,420 internal links checked.
  • OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun run test:changed --parallel=2 — 53 pass, 0 fail, 154 assertions across 2 files; exit 0. The initial queued invocation was stopped while waiting, then deliberately run with two workers to avoid serializing all release lanes.
  • The initial direct focused invocation used Bun 1.4.0 and failed the existing runner-version assertion (193 pass, 1 fail); rerunning with the required Bun 1.4.3 produced the passing result above.
  • Full local suite is deferred because concurrent release worktrees share constrained test capacity. Hosted CI completed successfully on 618eddbbbd677ebf0eec4011a00d2783002790e6: Cross-platform CI run 38992241027, including all four Ubuntu test shards and the aggregate CI job. The log confirms the new unavailable-family, available-family timeout, and live-owner regression cases executed and passed. Catalog async contracts run 38992241045 and React Doctor run 38992241024 also passed. macOS/Windows jobs were skipped by the PR workflow policy. A real IPv6-disabled Linux deployment has not been exercised locally; deterministic unavailable-family and timeout tests cover the reported decision path.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. Maintainer review of the owner-discovery boundary remains required before integration.

📝 Walkthrough

Cross-home owner discovery now checks whether each loopback address can be bound locally before probing it. It skips unavailable address families and continues owner checks for available or unknown families. Tests and documentation cover the resulting startup decisions.

Changes: Loopback-aware cross-home discovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect loopback-family availability
src/cli/loopback-family.ts, tests/cli/cross-home-loopback-family.test.ts
Adds a bind-based check for ::1 and 127.0.0.1. It returns unavailable only for specified address or protocol errors, returns unknown for other errors or non-loopback hostnames, and closes a listener after a successful bind. Tests cover these outcomes.
Apply availability to owner discovery and startup
src/cli/cross-home-owner.ts, tests/cli/cross-home-loopback-family.test.ts, structure/runtime.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/getting-started/quickstart.md, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
Discovery checks each hostname’s family availability once and skips unavailable addresses. Tests cover timeout, refusal, and live-owner outcomes. The runtime documentation and quickstart describe the startup behavior. Both test-layout mappings assign the new test to the cli shard.

On Linux with IPv6 disabled on loopback, startup skips the unavailable ::1 address instead of blocking on its probe. Only a test-coverage improvement remains, so no material merge blocker is established.

Explanation

Issue #7258 requires startup to continue when a loopback family is unavailable, while preserving refusal for ambiguous owner evidence and unverified live owners. src/cli/loopback-family.ts adds loopbackFamilyAvailability, which performs a synchronous ephemeral bind and returns unavailable only for EADDRNOTAVAIL, EAFNOSUPPORT, and EPROTONOSUPPORT. The implementation returns unknown for ENETUNREACH, timeouts, permission failures, and resource failures. The PR summary states that src/cli/cross-home-owner.ts skips only unavailable addresses before probing and retains existing identity and attestation checks. tests/cli/cross-home-loopback-family.test.ts covers the reported IPv4-refusal plus unavailable-IPv6 path, timeout refusal for available or unknown IPv6, unregistered live listeners, ENETUNREACH, and attested owners on both families. The test is registered in both layout maps. The documentation and runtime contract describe the same startup behavior. This satisfies the coding requirements for #7258.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed production files directly implement Issue #7258. src/cli/loopback-family.ts provides the address-availability check, and src/cli/cross-home-owner.ts integrates it into cross-home startup discovery. tests/cli/cross-home-loopback-family.test.ts supplies focused regression coverage. The two test-layout changes are required registration for that test. docs-site/src/content/docs/getting-started/quickstart.md and structure/runtime.md document the changed startup contract. No unrelated production behavior or unrelated cleanup is shown. No files are listed in ignored_files.

Maintainer integration into dev (MAINTAINERS.md maintainer-integration exception) for the 2.88.0 train; this is the release blocker for #7258.

Exact head 618eddbbbd677ebf0eec4011a00d2783002790e6: PR CI completed successfully (gates, test 1/4-4/4, aggregate ci), no unresolved review threads. Reviewed the diff: an ephemeral bind of the concrete loopback address classifies only EADDRNOTAVAIL/EAFNOSUPPORT/EPROTONOSUPPORT as family-unavailable; available or unknown families keep the existing indeterminate refusal, and live owners on either family still block or attach as siblings. Confirmed locally that Bun 1.4.0 surfaces code: "EADDRNOTAVAIL" on Bun.listen for an unassigned address, so the classification is reachable in practice. Changes on dev since the base (#7227, #7259, #7253) touch no shared files.
