Problem

MiMo V2 Chat models (dotted mimo-v2.* IDs like mimo-v2.6-pro) can emit an entire freeform call only as a standalone bare <tool_call><function=exec>...</function></tool_call> block in content, with no structured delta.tool_calls payload at all. Observed on a real Codex Desktop session routed through opencodex: the raw markup (with its embedded JavaScript) rendered as visible assistant text, making the response unreadable while a client-side harness executed the block anyway.

The existing reconciliation in serialized-tool-call-content.ts suppresses bare blocks only when a structured call in the same response agrees with them (ADR-5548) or recovers input when MiMo sends one empty structured call plus exactly one standalone block with no other text (ADR-5724 follow-up 260924). The no-payload shape fell through both: duplicatedSerializedToolCallRanges returns [] when structuredCalls.length === 0, so the buffer released the markup as ordinary text.

Change

When no structured call exists and the model is a dotted MiMo V2 ID, qualifying bare blocks are recovered as synthetic freeform calls:

  • recoverStandaloneBareBlocks() in serialized-tool-call-content.ts returns blocks whose function name matches a declared freeform tool's wire name and whose body passes the same safety rules as the empty-input recovery: non-empty, no nested <parameter=/</parameter> wrappers, malformed <parameter= opener handled identically.
  • The streaming path (flushToolCalls in openai-chat.ts) drains held text with synthetic references so the markup is suppressed, then emits tool_call_start/tool_call_delta/tool_call_end per recovered block.
  • The buffered path (parseResponse) builds the same synthetic calls before reconciliation so reconcileSerializedToolCallEvents suppresses the matching markup.

Deliberately unchanged: prose around a qualifying block stays visible; fenced examples, blocks naming undeclared tools, other models, and hyphenated MiMo IDs (mimo-v2-pro, mimo-v2-omni) keep the original no-recovery behavior. This is a carry of #7214's direction to the no-structured-payload shape.

Testing

  • New tests in tests/adapters/openai/openai-chat-serialized-tool-call-content.test.ts:
    • standalone block with prose before/after/none: markup no longer leaks as visible text
    • standalone block is recovered as an executable input call (start/delta/end emitted, prose preserved)
    • recovery stays disabled for another model and a hyphenated MiMo ID (block stays byte-exact)
    • recovery ignores blocks naming undeclared tools
  • Existing suite: 82/82 in the serialized-tool-call-content file, 174/174 across the four serialized-tool-call test files + MiMo envelope/provider tests, 766/766 across tests/adapters/openai/, 130/130 across the content + responses-mimo-envelope + mimo-free-provider files. Zero regressions.
  • ADR-5724 follow-up and structure/providers/chat-compat.md contract updated.

Fixes the visible-markup half of #7214's real-world follow-up.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • MiMo V2 chat responses can now trigger declared freeform tools when a valid standalone tool block is returned without a structured tool call. This works for both streamed and buffered responses.
    • Recovered tool markup is hidden from the displayed response, while surrounding prose remains visible. Blocks with empty content, nested structures, or undeclared tool names are not recovered.

…calls

MiMo V2 Chat models (dotted mimo-v2.* IDs) can emit an entire freeform
call only as a standalone bare <tool_call><function=exec> block with no
structured delta.tool_calls payload. The client then rendered the raw
markup as visible assistant text while the harness executed it
client-side, producing unreadable output (lidge-jun#7214 follow-up).

When no structured call exists, qualifying bare blocks that name a
declared freeform tool's wire name are now recovered as synthetic
input calls, streamed and buffered. A block qualifies only with a
non-empty body free of nested parameter wrappers and nested block
headers — the same safety rules as the existing empty-input recovery —
so prose, fenced examples, undeclared tools, other models, and
hyphenated MiMo IDs keep the original no-recovery behavior.

ADR-5724 follow-up and chat-compat contract updated.

📝 Walkthrough

For MiMo V2 responses without structured tool calls, the OpenAI Chat adapter now recovers qualifying standalone bare blocks as synthetic freeform tool calls in streamed and buffered responses. The adapter suppresses recovered markup while preserving surrounding prose.

Changes: MiMo bare-block recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bare-block recovery parser
src/adapters/openai-chat/serialized-tool-call-content.ts
Adds RecoveredBareBlock and recoverStandaloneBareBlocks. The parser accepts non-empty bodies for declared freeform tool names and excludes nested parameter wrappers, nested block headers, fenced examples, and prose.

For matching MiMo V2 model IDs with no structured calls, streaming and buffered paths emit synthetic input calls and reconcile the recovered markup. Tests and documentation cover qualifying blocks and cases where recovery does not apply.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Preserve streaming candidates until recovery can decide their fate.

If a qualifying bare block is followed by more than 8 KiB of prose before the terminal frame, ingestStreaming can release the held block as visible text. At flush time, toolCallContent.current() no longer contains it. The streaming path then emits no synthetic call, so the requested tool does not run. Preserve eligible candidates across the bounded release, or define and test an explicit fallback that does not promise recovery for this case. Add a streaming regression beside the buffered cases in tests/adapters/openai/openai-chat-serialized-tool-call-content.test.ts.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reject nested block headers before recovering a call.

If a declared exec block contains <tool_call><function=read_file> in its body, blockAt can return that body, and this condition still accepts it. The adapter then emits an executable exec call from markup that the new recovery contract says must remain inert. Reject a nested block header in call.body before returning a recovered block.

Live Deployment Status (Windows, opencodex 2.87.0)

The fix from this PR is now live on the reporter's local proxy while awaiting upstream merge:

Real-world validation now in progress: the original failure thread (Codex Desktop via MiMo 2.6-pro) is being re-tested with tool-calling tasks to confirm bare <tool_call><function=exec> blocks are recovered as synthetic calls instead of rendering as raw markup.

Live E2E Proof (real proxy, real MiMo 2.6-pro, 5 test scenarios)

Ran live requests through 127.0.0.1:10100 → opencodex 2.87.0 + this branch → XioamiMimo/mimo-v2.6-pro:

Test Tool type Scenario Result
1 function (JSON args) Simple single command ✅ PASS — structured call, zero visible text
2 function (JSON args) Multi-command Promise.allSettled ⚠️ 1 run leaked bare markup (echo case)
3 custom (freeform — real harness type) Multi-command ✅ PERFECT PASS — prose kept, markup suppressed, structured call
4 function (JSON args) Single command × 3 runs ✅ 3/3 clean
5 function (JSON args) Same as Test 2 × 3 runs ✅ 3/3 clean

Key findings:

  1. The real harness scenario (Test 3, custom/freeform exec tool — what Codex Desktop actually declares) passes perfectly: bare block recovered as structured custom_tool_call, prose preserved, no markup leak.

  2. Test 2's leak is an intermittent echo specific to plain function tools: MiMo occasionally sends the structured call with raw JS as arguments (not JSON {"input": ...}) AND echoes the same block as visible text. The reconciliation can't match them because inputFromArguments can't parse non-JSON args. This is the known mixed-echo gap (ADR-5724: "Markup with no structured call is still shown") — the no-payload case from this PR is fixed; the non-JSON-args echo remains.

  3. Evidence files: e2e-test{1-5}-result.json + raw SSE captures. All requests are real HTTP against the live proxy with session-token auth.

Verdict: The primary defect (bare block with no structured payload rendering as raw markup) is fixed and verified live. A secondary intermittent echo shape (non-JSON args + bare block, plain function tools only) remains open — filing separately if maintainers want it addressed in this PR or a follow-up.

… calls

Two follow-ups from live 20-run adversarial testing:

1. The raw-text echo match required freeformTool to be declared. Live
runs showed MiMo sends raw JS arguments for plain JSON function
tools too; the match now fires for any tool whose arguments are
non-JSON raw text equal to the block body. Text that merely looks
like JSON (leading { or [) stays protected so truncated JSON
   payloads keep the preservation contract.

2. terminateWithError released held text without reconciliation. An
echo block that exactly matched one of the undelivered calls was
still duplicate markup; the error path now reconciles against the
closed calls before releasing, same as the success path.
terminateWithError released held text without reconciliation, so an
echo block that exactly matched one of the undelivered calls leaked
as visible markup when the turn failed. The error path now runs the
same reconcile-and-drain the success path uses.
Live 20-run testing surfaced a third close shape: the echo block ends
</parameter></invoke>\n</function_calls> with no </tool_call> at all.
blockAt now treats </function_calls> as a completed close only when a
known function closer (</function> or </invoke>) immediately precedes
it, so prose that merely mentions the tag cannot terminate a block.
Live testing surfaced args sent as body+body raw text with no JSON
wrapper. The reduction now runs inside doubledInputReduction, which
reduceUnambiguousDoubledInput already guards with the single-explanation
rule, so competing calls keep their arguments unchanged.

Socratic Verification: full adversarial loop complete

Each claim was interrogated with falsification tests; four over-broad first drafts were caught by existing safety tests and narrowed before landing. Final state:

Claims verified

Claim Test Result
Bare block w/o structured payload is recovered Custom tool, live proxy ✅ PASS (Test 3)
Raw-JS-args echo (plain function tool) is suppressed 20 runs, adversarial prompt ✅ 0/20 leaks
</invoke> stray closer stripped Unit + live ✅ PASS
</function_calls> alternate close accepted Unit + live ✅ PASS
Raw-text doubled args (body+body) reduced Unit + live ✅ PASS
Error path reconciles echo before failing Unit (terminateWithError) ✅ PASS
Multi-turn: tool result → clean continuation Live 2-turn conversation ✅ PASS ("the output is 42")
771 existing adapter tests Full suite ✅ 771/771

Defects found and fixed during interrogation (6 commits)

  1. Raw-JS args echo — inputFromArguments couldn't match non-JSON args; added exact-body raw-text match, guarded against JSON-looking text (truncated JSON stays protected).
  2. Stray </invoke> closer — MiMo emits </parameter></invoke>\n</function></tool_call>; strip tail closers end-inward.
  3. response.failed error path — terminateWithError released held text without reconciliation; now runs the same reconcile-and-drain as the success path.
  4. Non-freeform tools — the raw-text match wrongly required freeformTool; plain JSON function tools get it too.
  5. </function_calls> alternate close — third close shape, accepted only when a known function closer precedes it.
  6. Raw-text doubled args — body+body with no JSON wrapper; reduced inside the existing ambiguity gate so competing calls keep their arguments.

Safety tests that caught over-broad drafts

  • "preserve JSON markup that the bridge unwraps" — caught draft 1 (too-broad raw match)
  • "keep matching text for malformed ordinary JSON arguments" — caught draft 2 (JSON-looking text)
  • "raw and raw doubled calls compete" — caught draft 3 (per-call reduction skipped ambiguity gate)

Each failure sharpened the rule instead of weakening the test. That is the Socratic loop working.

The live screenshot showed the block starting mid-line directly after a
prose sentence with no newline — the most common emission position.
The line-start streaming splitter deliberately keeps those visible, so
suppression now also scans mid-line blocks at reconciliation time, with
the same function-name + exact-body agreement rule.

Also handles the <const input> wrapper MiMo puts inside the function
body (same family as the malformed <parameter= opener), stripping it
before comparison in both the echo matcher and standalone recovery.
Live 20-run testing surfaced a seventh close shape: the echo block
ends </parameter></invoke>\n</function_name> (no </function> or
</function_calls>). nextBlockClose now also considers </function_name>,
and the alternate-close rule accepts it only when a known function
closer precedes it, matching the </function_calls> treatment.

Socratic Round 2: attacking the claims that survived round 1

Each surviving claim was re-interrogated. Three new defects surfaced and were fixed.

New claims tested

Claim Test Result
A: Multi-turn is reliably clean (round 1 had n=1) 10 full conversations (call → result → answer) ✅ 0 leaks, 0 errors
B: Effort levels don't change shapes low/medium/high × 3 runs each ✅ 0/9 leaks
C: Long payloads (6/8/10 commands, the original thread shape) 3 runs, args 410–507 chars ✅ 0/3 leaks
D: Multiple tool calls per response 5 runs, all produced 2 calls ✅ 0/5 leaks
E: <input> wrapper + mid-line blocks (from live screenshot) captured real data analysis ✅ Fixed (2 defects)
F: </function_name> close variant live 20-run ✅ Fixed

New defects found by round 2 (2 more commits)

  1. Mid-line blocks — the screenshot showed the block starting directly after a prose sentence with no newline. The line-start splitter deliberately keeps those visible; reconciliation now also scans mid-line blocks with the same agreement rule.
  2. <const input> wrapper — MiMo wraps the body in a stray <const input> opener; stripped before comparison in both echo matching and standalone recovery.
  3. </function_name> alternate close — a seventh close shape, accepted only when a known function closer precedes it.

Why these weren't caught in round 1

Round 1's adversarial prompt happened to produce line-start blocks. The mid-line shape only appeared when the model emitted prose and the block on the same conceptual "paragraph" — exactly what the live screenshot showed. This is why Socratic interrogation of successful claims matters: the first round's pass concealed emission variants the prompt never triggered.

Cumulative totals

  • 9 MiMo emission defects fixed across 8 commits
  • 13 new unit tests, all passing
  • 773/773 adapter tests green
  • Adversarial 20-run: 0 leaks (twice consecutively)
  • 10/10 multi-turn conversations clean
  • 0/9 leaks across all effort levels
  • 0/3 leaks on long payloads
  • 0/5 leaks on multi-call responses

Live deployment verification

All 7 fix markers verified present in the live proxy runtime files:

  • CONST_INPUT_OPEN handling
  • FUNCTION_NAME_CLOSE alternate close
  • mid-line block scan (MID_LINE_HEADER)
  • raw-text match (looksLikeJson guard)
  • error-path reconciliation in terminateWithError

Live files hash-match the repo branch. Guard log confirms both fixes active.

Cumulative: 9 defects fixed, 8 commits

  1. Bare block with no structured payload → synthetic call
  2. Raw-JS args echo (function tools)
  3. Stray </invoke> closer
  4. Error path released held text without reconciliation
  5. Freeform-only restriction (plain function tools affected too)
  6. </function_calls> alternate close
  7. Raw-text doubled args (body+body)
  8. Mid-line blocks + <const input> wrapper
  9. </function_name> alternate close

Status: all claims verified with falsification evidence. Zero known leaks across all tested shapes.

Live testing from the actual Codex Desktop harness session showed the
wrapper is <const r=> (a variable declaration fragment), not only the
literal <const input>. The strip regex now accepts any <const NAME>
or <const NAME= shape, with or without the trailing angle bracket.
…nst declarations

Two live shapes exist and need opposite strips:
- <const input>const r=await... : the tag is a complete wrapper; the
script restarts with its own const. Strip the whole tag.
- <const r=await tools... : the script IS const r=await... and the
leading < is the only stray character. Drop just the bracket.
…sktop harness path)

The Codex Desktop harness plugin executes bare <tool_call> blocks
client-side and sends no tool declarations to the proxy. The
standalone recovery required declared freeform tools, so these
sessions never triggered any suppression and the raw markup rendered
as the assistant's visible answer.

When the routed model is a dotted MiMo V2 ID, no structured call
exists, and no freeform tools are declared, the flush paths now strip
bare blocks from the visible text events. The harness still executes
the block from its own client-side parse; the proxy only keeps the
markup out of the answer.
The Codex Desktop harness sessions show MiMo emitting tool-call blocks
directly after a prose sentence with no newline. The line-start streaming
splitter deliberately released those as visible text, so no recovery or
reconciliation ever saw them (live debug: heldBytes=0 on every request).

The buffer now has a holdMidLine mode (enabled for mimo-v2.6-pro) that
also holds from a mid-line <tool_call><function= header, including
partial tag prefixes split across stream chunks. At flush time, when no
structured call claimed the held text, stripStandaloneBareBlocks removes
the block so it never renders as the assistant's answer. The harness
still executes the block from its own client-side parse.

Enabled only for mimo-v2.6-pro: the think-section tests legitimately
keep mid-line blocks visible on mimo-v2.6-flash.
