Summary

  • Fix Windows picker activation after OpenCodex starts with picker intent off. The management PUT previously returned HTTP 503 picker_proxy_unavailable because startup discarded the controller.
  • Retain a dormant controller and bind the picker relay under its enable lock after mode, integration and preference checks. Startup stays relay-, timer- and credential-free when intent is off. Concurrent enables share one relay, failed binds can retry, live state publishes the new port, and shutdown closes it.
  • Add management regressions for preference-off, Desktop-integration-off and gateway startup; update the lifecycle contract and English user guide.

Verification

  • No tests or typecheck ran locally on the Mac, per coordinator instruction. Full-suite coverage is left to hosted CI and integration validation; remote focused checks cover this bounded lifecycle repair.
  • Remote red on lidge, 7c4c4e266b7408bb508fe0487ddbfab5426ca925: OCX_LANE_SLOTS=3 ~/bin/ocx-lane-ci2.sh <sha> f4-picker-red-1016 tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-windows.test.ts — typecheck passed, all three new cases reproduced HTTP 503 (9 pass / 3 fail).
  • Remote green on lidge, 575e6a6e2dcb7be9fd09a5833262c835af73b617: lane f4-picker-serial-1016, typecheck and bun run test --parallel=1 passed, 82 tests / 7 files: claude-picker-windows, claude-picker-relay-intent, claude-desktop-picker-routes, claude-picker-runtime, claude-picker-startup, claude-picker-recovery, claude-desktop-picker (all under tests/claude-integration/, suffix .test.ts). Summary: ~/ocx-lane/logs/f4-picker-serial-1016.summary.
  • The initial parallel remote run had 63 pass / 2 fail: existing profile setup failed before startup in runtime/relay-intent tests; all seven files pass serially. This parallel-run limitation remains recorded.
  • Structure documentation was compacted to respect its 600-line budget in 2fafae911d1637229b3a019e744180200a4b966d. Remote checks passed on that head on lidge: bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, and cd docs-site && bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build (577 pages; 81,420 internal links checked).
  • Native Windows remote lane f4-picker-win-1016 on 575e6a6e2dcb7be9fd09a5833262c835af73b617: typecheck passed, 18 tests / 2 files passed (claude-picker-windows and claude-picker-relay-intent). It acquired the existing user lock after 190 seconds. Synthetic trust and real ephemeral CONNECT fixtures; interactive OS trust was not certified.
  • Merged current origin/dev (050bb444a0, including fix(gui): restore keep-native-v1 qualifier placement #7237 keep-native-v1 repair) without conflicts and pushed merge 40ab486f5bf1883015a139855bf1c2be8e36ded7. Corrected the remaining contradictory Windows lifecycle sentence from review in final head e71c0cf7f6630c3585aa561329b3da83d7f34bb1; remote bun run structure:check passed on that exact head. Runtime/test code is unchanged from the remote green SHA; only documentation corrections and the upstream GUI fix followed. Hosted PR CI on this head is pending and is the final authority before any merge. This task does not merge.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. Existing trust/profile checks and browser/CLI tunnel split are preserved; lazy binding follows eligibility checks and remains loopback-only.

📝 Walkthrough

The Windows picker controller can remain dormant when picker intent is off at startup. A later enable request can bind the relay and start the picker without restarting OpenCodex. Runtime state reports the proxy port only while the proxy is live.

Changes: Windows picker enablement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Enable-time proxy contract
src/claude/desktop-picker.ts
The controller accepts an optional ensureProxy callback. When no proxy is live, enable invokes the callback if available and returns proxy_unavailable if binding fails or leaves the proxy unbound.
Runtime proxy lifecycle
src/claude/intercept/runtime.ts
The runtime uses a guarded, retryable proxy-binding helper. It closes a proxy that finishes binding after shutdown, records and rethrows bind failures, and exposes the proxy port and active picker only while the proxy is live.
Enablement coverage and documentation
tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-windows.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/claude-code.md, structure/clients/claude-desktop.md
Integration tests cover dormant startup, enablement, concurrent and repeated requests, bind failure and retry, and shutdown. The documentation describes the deferred Windows relay lifecycle.

that controller when one exists. With no controller (intercept disabled, client role, or a failed
picker-proxy bind), its offline operations remove leftover picker artifacts without creating a
terminator, and refuse enable with `proxy_unavailable`.
Windows with picker intent off retains a dormant controller without binding the relay or starting refresh. Enable checks mode, integration and preference, then binds and starts under the lock. Concurrent enables share one relay; failed lazy binds can retry. State and handle publish the bound port, and shutdown closes it.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The new controller-lifecycle text contradicts the unchanged text at Lines 278-279.

Line 338 states that Windows with picker intent off "retains a dormant controller". Lines 278-279 still state that Windows without picker intent or an applied profile "constructs neither picker runtime/controller nor relay".

The code now matches Line 338. In src/claude/intercept/runtime.ts, Line 249 constructs the runtime whenever pickerBlocked is false, and the controller is always created after it. Change Lines 278-279 to say that Windows builds the runtime and the controller but defers relay binding and refresh until enable.

The rule in structure/AGENTS.md requires present-tense contracts that hold right now. Two contradictory statements in one doc break that rule.
