Summary

This promotes the frozen dev candidate 494c50d02f9773b7da9c47fb345e7a8540a87b90 to main as stable 2.86.0. The promotion head 38301b7f3a merges in main ancestry with the ours strategy and has exactly the candidate tree (cc3929dd9a). At the candidate, the version is already 2.86.0 in package.json, desktop tauri.conf.json, and Cargo.toml. The dev pre-move is #7109 (dev → 2.87.0), merged before this promotion.

2.85.0 was promoted to main (#7094) but never published. The owner chose to ship it together with the Windows CI root-cause fix as 2.86.0, so this release carries everything from 2.85.0 plus #7107.

Highlights since 2.84.0:

Verification

Main-review disposition. Promotion from dev to main and npm releases are maintainer-controlled (MAINTAINERS.md). The project owner authorized this release as 2.86.0, so the promotion merges with owner authority (--admin). The PR targets main deliberately, so an enforce-target wrong_base failure is expected (as in #7094).

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • The CLI now detects unavailable auxiliary listener ports before startup proceeds, helping avoid partial startup when a port is already in use.
    • Response-state changes are more reliably saved during shutdown, including when updates overlap with a save in progress.
    • Windows tray health checks no longer wait synchronously during regular updates, helping keep the interface responsive.
    • Windows configuration security checks and desktop authentication operations have improved handling.
  • Release

    • Updated the app version to 2.86.0.

* fix(test-teardown): settle un-awaited background work before removing a tree

The pre-route pool quota prime runs without being awaited and holds the
native-main claim database open across ACL hardening and a WHAM read.
Teardown retried removal with Bun.sleepSync, which blocks the event loop
the prime needs to reach its finally, so on Windows every retry failed
EBUSY until the 15 s budget ran out (#7088 and #7091 stubbed the prime
per test).

Track fire-and-forget work in src/lib/background-work, register the pool
prime and its lazy-import callers, settle it in a global afterEach, and
add removeTreeAfterBackgroundWork (settle, reap icacls, then retry with
waits that yield). The compaction fixture uses it, and the per-test prime
stubs from #7088 and #7091 are reverted so the real prime runs again.

* fix(responses): serialize snapshot follow-up scheduling with shutdown

* fix(config): track the config-dir ACL harden as background work

icacls holds the config directory open while it runs; a config write or
removal that lands on it before the child exits fails with a sharing
violation on Windows. Registering the flight lets the per-case drain
settle it, and the V2 refusal test now prints the CLI errors when the
handler refuses before the native toggle.

* fix(cli): reject occupied auxiliary ports before private startup work

* fix(tray): retain timed-out probes until asynchronous reaping

Remove WaitForExit from startup-health timeout ticks and retain process ownership until exit and both readers settle. Run lifecycle fixtures with the production Bun engine instead of a nested PowerShell cold start, which failed readiness before maintenance in Windows run 38503986851.

* fix(config): preserve Windows ACL memo across repeated reads

* test: bound child exit and pipe waits in slow-spawn cases

* fix(ci): share one transpiler cache per shard; widen the DPAPI PowerShell bound

Run 2 and 3 of the Windows proof failed on first-spawn timeouts (writeJournal
child 40s, launcher attest 15s) and a 10s DPAPI PowerShell call. Each CI batch
is its own bun test process, and with BUN_RUNTIME_TRANSPILER_CACHE_PATH unset
the preload gives every batch an empty private cache, so the first child each
batch spawns re-transpiles its whole module graph. The batch runner now creates
one private cache per shard and exports it. The DPAPI helper's PowerShell
bound moves from 10s to 20s: it is async and off the request path, and a cold
PowerShell loading System.Security exceeded 10s on a loaded runner.

* test(desktop-egress): give each proxy variable one spelling on Windows

Windows environment names are case-insensitive, so the child env that set
ALL_PROXY to the fixture proxy and all_proxy to "" defined one variable
twice. Env-block ordering decided the winner; adding the shard transpiler
cache variable flipped it, and the -all cases reached the real chatgpt.com
(403). Clear every spelling and set only the intended route.

* fix(test-teardown): never remove or exit under live tracked work; address review findings

- removeTreeAfterBackgroundWork keeps the tree and names pending work instead of
  deleting under a live writer.
- Final sandbox cleanup bounds background-work settlement (15 s) and leaves the
root for stale recovery with the labels when work never settles.
- spawnTestChild rejects when the child never started (ENOENT) instead of
  resolving an empty result.
- Auxiliary preflight rejects loopback and hub management configured on one port.
- Tray shutdown keeps a probe tracked until it has actually exited and waits for
  its pipe readers before disposal.
- The free-socket preflight test binds inside try so a lost race still stops the
  first server.

Review in Change Stack →

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update desktop version metadata, add CLI listener preflight, coordinate background work and response snapshot persistence, and revise test child-process and Windows tray probe lifecycle handling. They also adjust Windows config hardening and expand related test coverage and documentation.

Changes: Auxiliary listener preflight

Layer / File(s) Summary
Probe listener ports before startup
src/cli/auxiliary-listener-preflight.ts, src/cli/index.ts, structure/runtime.md, tests/cli/cli-start-auxiliary-bind.test.ts
The CLI checks enabled auxiliary listener ports on loopback before proxy-port selection. Tests cover collisions, occupied ports, and the absence of spend-ledger and admin-token artifacts after a failed bind.

Background work and configuration cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track background tasks
src/lib/background-work.ts, src/codex/auth-api/pool-mode-gate.ts, src/codex/auth-context.ts, src/server/index.ts, src/config/paths.ts
A registry tracks labeled promises and can wait for tracked work. Codex quota priming and optional config ACL hardening register their tasks.
Apply platform-specific config hardening
src/config/load-degrade.ts, src/config/paths.ts, structure/config.md, tests/windows/windows-config-read-acl-memo.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
Windows config hardening skips chmod before ACL operations; POSIX paths retain best-effort private modes. Tests cover repeated ACL observations, metadata changes, and POSIX permissions.
Wait for background work before tree removal
scripts/test-temp.ts, tests/helpers/remove-tree.ts, tests/helpers/compaction-routing-fixtures.ts, tests/preload.ts, tests/lib/remove-tree-helper.test.ts, tests/responses/responses-compaction-routing.test.ts
Tree cleanup can wait for background work and Windows ACL reaps before removal. Test teardown waits for tracked work and reports pending task labels.

Response snapshot persistence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Coordinate snapshot writes and shutdown flushes
src/responses/state.ts, structure/codex-home.md, tests/responses/responses-state-flush-race.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
The persistence gate now covers writes and follow-up scheduling. Regression tests check concurrent flushes, mutations during writes, and whether pending passes persist the updated snapshot.

Test child-process lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add shared bounded child execution
tests/helpers/spawn-test-child.ts, tests/helpers/cold-spawn-warmup.ts
spawnTestChild captures output and reports timeout, exit, reap, and pipe-closure status. Module graph warm-up delegates child execution to this helper.
Use lifecycle results in child-process tests
tests/ci-workflows/cold-spawn-warmup.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-route-policy-write.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-status-json.test.ts, tests/codex-integration/catalog-auto-refresh-scheduler.test.ts, tests/lib/optional-desktop-upstream.test.ts, structure/ops/test-sandbox-cleanup.md
Child-process tests check completion and pipe status. Fixture roots are retained when child completion is unconfirmed. Proxy variables are filtered case-insensitively in the desktop HTTP test.
Isolate the Bun transpiler cache
scripts/ci/run-bun-test-batches.sh
The batch runner creates and removes a temporary Bun transpiler cache when no cache path is set.

Windows tray startup-health probe

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track and stop startup-health probes
src/tray/windows-tray.ps1, tests/helpers/windows-tray-probe-child.ts, tests/helpers/windows-tray-probe-lifecycle-driver.ps1, tests/windows/windows-tray.test.ts, structure/runtime.md
Probe termination no longer blocks regular tray ticks. The probe remains tracked until process exit and redirected-reader completion; shutdown uses bounded waits.

Release version metadata

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update desktop version values
package.json, desktop/src-tauri/Cargo.toml, desktop/src-tauri/tauri.conf.json
The package and Tauri application versions change from 2.85.0 to 2.86.0.

Windows DPAPI timeout

Layer / File(s) Summary
Increase the Windows PowerShell timeout
src/codex/desktop-compatibility/windows-key-protection.ts, tests/clients/desktop-compatibility-authority.test.ts
The PowerShell timeout increases from 10 to 20 seconds, and the related test timeout increases from 35 to 65 seconds.

CLI and test assertions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update test assertions and layout
tests/cli/cli-v2-runtime.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
The CLI refusal assertion includes the error count. The test layout maps the new response-state and Windows ACL tests.

On Windows, a startup-health probe that is slow to terminate can keep running after the tray exits. A hand-edited configuration whose management port equals the public port is still accepted and fails late during startup. The test-only child runner can misreport a cleanly exited child as timed out. The orphaned-probe issue should be resolved or explicitly accepted before this release is published.

P2 Badge Reap the startup probe before the tray exits

On Windows, when the killed startup-health probe takes more than 500 ms to report exit, this branch only logs and retains the reference, but its caller is the tray's finally block, so there are no later timer ticks to finish reaping it. This regresses the previous three-second shutdown wait and can leave ocx __startup-health orphaned after the tray exits; use a bounded process-tree/job teardown or otherwise wait for termination before returning. It also contradicts the newly documented structure/runtime.md contract that shutdown's bounded wait ends in disposal.

Reject management-port collisions before public-port selection.

loadConfig() accepts a persisted configuration where hub.managementIngress.port equals the public port. The load-time schema checks the management port range, but not its relationship to config.port.

The new preflight checks that the management port is free, then public-port selection can choose that same port. Startup can then fail when both listeners bind it. Reject this collision before selection and exclude the management port from all public-port fallback choices.

Keep the startup-health probe owned during tray shutdown.

Stop-StartupHealthProbe -Shutdown calls Kill() and waits only 500 ms. Kill() is asynchronous, so the wait can return while the process is still running. The branch at src/tray/windows-tray.ps1:246-248 keeps only a script reference and schedules no further cleanup.

The helper runs from the tray’s final finally block after Application.Run() returns. The tray then disposes its resources and exits, so no later timer tick can reap the process. A probe can therefore outlive the tray.

Keep a bounded owner active until the probe exits, or use a termination mechanism whose ownership survives tray shutdown.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

close overwrites exitCode/signal after a reap-grace finish is impossible, but close can also arrive before exit and still finish correctly. Confirm one edge: a pipe error after a clean exit sets timedOut.

At Line 93 and Line 94, stop is the handler for stdout and stderr error events. stop sets timedOut = true and sends SIGKILL. Suppose a pipe emits error after exit has already fired, for example when a descendant's broken pipe raises EPIPE or ECONNRESET. In that case the result reports timedOut: true for a child that exited cleanly. Callers at tests/cli/cli-route-policy-write.test.ts Line 267 and tests/codex-integration/catalog-auto-refresh-scheduler.test.ts Line 748 then treat the child as incomplete and keep the fixture root. Their assertions also fail with a misleading timeout diagnosis. If the child has already been reaped, a pipe error should only start the reap grace. It should not mark the run as timed out.

Proposed fix
-    child.stdout?.on("error", stop);
-    child.stderr?.on("error", stop);
+    const onPipeError = () => { if (reaped) beginReapGrace(); else stop(); };
+    child.stdout?.on("error", onPipeError);
+    child.stderr?.on("error", onPipeError);

Review comment at @tests/helpers/spawn-test-child.ts around lines 106 - 119:
Update the stdout and stderr error handlers in the child-spawning helper so pipe
errors after the child has been reaped start the reap grace without marking the
run timed out; preserve the existing stop behavior for errors before reaping.
