fix(link): recover Home-initiated links after outages and make Retry reconnect - #6900
WOULDU-pres wants to merge 6 commits into
Conversation
The Home ran its link tunnels without a retry policy, so a failed link stayed failed until a proxy restart. A retry that came back up was also promoted only by a catalog request from the Child, so an idle Child's healthy reconnect was killed at the five-minute outage limit: one network blip took the link down for good. - run the Home supervisor with HOME_TUNNEL_RETRY_POLICY, the same cadence as the Child's own tunnel (timeout/forward 60 s, auth 5 min, host key never) - promote a retry whose ssh child outlives a 15 s grace, longer than ssh's ConnectTimeout, as five seconds already promotes a first attempt - keep a retry running while the state reads failed, and let a retry that started just before the outage limit finish its grace - spawn on reload only for a fresh link or a due attempt - report an exit even when its stderr cannot be read - document the Home policy in structure/remote-link.md and the Remote Link guide (all locales) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

A retry whose grace ended on the tick that reached FAILED_AFTER_MS, or one still running when a tick arrived late after a sleep, was first reduced to failed and then killed instead of promoted. Check promotion before the tick so a child that has outlived its grace is kept. Addresses the Codex review on lidge-jun#6900. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The exit handler drops the child before it awaits stderr. A tick in that window could fail the link on the outage clock with a one-minute retryAt, and the host-key exit that followed was then ignored, so a changed host key was retried. Skip the tick while an exit is still being classified. Addresses the second Codex review on lidge-jun#6900. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
In the failed state the dashboard's Retry only re-read /api/link/status,
so a link the supervisor had given up on stayed failed until a proxy
restart. Retry now restarts the tunnel of each failed or reconnecting
Home-initiated link, without restarting OpenCodex.
- LinkSupervisor.reconnect(linkId): wait for a running reload, stop the
link's child, forget its backoff or failed state and spawn a fresh attempt
- POST /api/link/{id}/reconnect for a dashboard session or the loopback
admin token; a Child-initiated link is refused (409
link_not_home_initiated) because the Child owns that tunnel
- ocx link reconnect --link-id <id> [--json]
- an exit that finishes after a reconnect started a fresh child no longer
overwrites the new attempt's state
- docs: Remote Link guide (all locales), structure docs, generated ocx
skill surface

ConnectTimeout covers the TCP connect, the SSH handshake and key exchange; authentication and the remote forward request come after it. Say so in the supervisor comment and structure/remote-link.md, and record that liveness promotion is the same heuristic the first attempt uses. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…nnect on the listener
- every spawn bumps a per-link generation; an exit still classifying its
stderr, or a stop still waiting for its child, applies only while its
generation is current, so a reconnect's new child keeps its own state
- the draining marker records its generation and is cleared by a newer spawn
- overlapping reconnects for one link share one restart
- POST /api/link/{id}/reconnect requires the link listener to be listening
(503 listener_unavailable), as apply does, before it starts a forward
- structure/remote-link.md lists ocx link reconnect in the CLI inventory

Serialize reconnect with link removal
When a reconnect overlaps DELETE /api/link/{id}, the delete can finish its initial stopLink and spend up to 30 seconds disconnecting the remote while this call starts a replacement from the captured record. The delete then revokes/removes the link and may close the listener without stopping that replacement; if it exits, the supervisor's still-stale internal store can also retry it, leaving a hidden SSH process or retry loop after a successful disconnect. The reconnects map only coalesces reconnects, so serialize reconnect against the full removal transaction or otherwise reserve the link against new spawns until removal finishes.

Keep Retry disabled until the refresh finishes
If the reconnect POST succeeds but the following status GET is slow, clearing busy here renders the old failed/reconnecting state with Retry enabled while refreshStatus() is still pending. A user clicking it again sends a new reconnect after the first request's coalescing promise has completed, immediately terminating the freshly spawned SSH child and extending the outage; keep the busy state through the refresh.

…il refresh
- the public stopLink (removal, compensation) now holds the link: neither
the tick nor reconnect starts it again until the next reload, so a
reconnect overlapping DELETE /api/link/{id} cannot leave a tunnel running
after the link is gone; a failed remote disconnect still restarts the
tunnel through its reload, which ends the hold
- the dashboard keeps Retry disabled until the status read after the
reconnect lands, so a second click cannot kill the tunnel just started

Summary
Closes #6899.
A Home-initiated Remote Link now recovers by itself after sleep or a network drop, and the dashboard's Retry now restarts it. Before this change the link stayed
faileduntilocx restart, and Retry only re-read the status. The automatic part is the Home half of the reconnect work that #5973 did for the Child, which decision K19 indevlog/_fin/260925_remote_home_child_link/003_decisions.mddeferred.Automatic recovery (
src/link/supervisor.ts,src/link/tunnel-state.ts)HOME_TUNNEL_RETRY_POLICY, which has the same values asCLIENT_TUNNEL_RETRY_POLICY. Timeout and forward failures retry after 60 s. Auth failures retry after 5 min, so the Child's sshd sees at most 12 attempts an hour. A changed host key is never retried. Theforwardcase matters because, right after a drop, the Child's sshd often still holds the port of the session that just died.GET /v1/catalogcould promote a retry, and an idle Child never sends one. A healthy reconnected tunnel therefore stayedreconnectinguntil the tick atFAILED_AFTER_MSkilled it, so even a one-second blip took the link down five minutes later. Now a retry (reconnecting, or failed withinFlight) whose ssh child stays up for 15 s is promoted toconnected, the same way five seconds already promotes a first attempt. 15 s is longer than the 10 s that ssh'sConnectTimeoutallows for the TCP connect, handshake and key exchange. Like the first attempt's rule, this is a liveness heuristic, and the supervisor comment andstructure/remote-link.mdsay so.Retry and
ocx link reconnectLinkSupervisor.reconnect(linkId)waits for a running reload, stops that link's ssh child, forgets its backoff or failed state and spawns a fresh attempt. Overlapping reconnects for one link share one restart. Every spawn bumps a per-link generation, so an exit still classifying its stderr, or a stop still waiting for its child, never overwrites a newer child's state.POST /api/link/{id}/reconnectaccepts the same principals asDELETE /api/link/{id}: a dashboard session, or the admin token on trusted loopback. Tailscale identity sessions are refused. Like apply, it requires the link listener to be listening before it starts a forward.
